Boethius considers the role of reason, as well as fortune or luck, in human experience and how his understanding of those concepts does or does not align with his worldview.
As the video recounts, during his imprisonment, Boethius imagines he is visited by a character named Lady Philosophy, a figure influenced by Greek philosophy, particularly the Stoics; through an imagined dialogue with her, he also considers the influence of the Roman Goddess Fortuna. These figures pre-date Christianity, yet Boethius, like many Romans of his time, was profoundly influenced by Christianity and also wrote theological treatises.
Using the example of Boethius, as well as other philosophers we have studied so far, discuss how one’s worldview or religious tradition is related to one’s philosophy. To what degree is there a direct correspondence between a person’s religion and their philosophy? Is that dynamic also influenced by that person’s historical time period?
How can we make sense of the complexity and seeming contradictions within a person’s worldview that might lead them to lean on reason in one circumstance and faith in another or attribute their condition to fortune on the one hand while also crediting their own free will as their condition changes. For example, many consider prayer a great form of consolation, yet Boethius facing the end of his life turns to the philosophy of Stoicism.
