Response Paper 1: In Chapter 1 of your textbook, World History, we learned about the Neolithic Revolution, defined as the transition from “a hunter-gatherer world to an agricultural one” that began approximately 11,700 years ago. Moreover, as your textbook authors note, the historian Lauren Ristvet argues that the crux of agriculture is the “domestication of plants” by humans. However, Mette Løvschal makes the case in their essay “Mutual Entrapment” that plants like heather, Calluna vulgaris, domesticated Neolithic humans as much as they domesticated plants like heather used for livestock fodder. In a two (2) page essay, I would like you to discuss the following questions in sequence:
How would you describe or introduce both the concept of the Neolithic Revolution and the Natufian Adaptation to someone who had no knowledge of prehistory? What basic information do they need to know to understand these terms?
What role did climate conditions and climate change play in the Neolithic Revolution?
What does Løvschal mean when they argue that humans did not domesticate plants like heather but rather entered into a relationship of “mutual entrapment”?
What evidence does Løvschal introduce and discuss to state their case about heather?
Are you persuaded by the arguments made by Løvschal?
