Wellness is a contemporary term with deep roots and rich history. Well-being has acquired credibility as a current idea since the 1940s. Elements of the well-being notion may be found in numerous nineteenth-century philosophical, religious, and professional organizations in the US and European Nations. Nilson and Thorell (2018) further assert that wellness principles may also be linked to classical societies such as Greece and Italy, whose cultural practices have indelibly impacted the present wellness trend.

There has also been a shift towards a more holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on not just physical health but also mental and emotional well-being. This includes recognizing that social, economic, and environmental factors can all impact an individual’s health and that addressing these factors is important for overall well-being. According to Rhoda (2018), in the 18th century, wellness was defined as the lack of sickness. Epidemics were transmitted largely due to a lack of sanitary environments. In the latter 19th and early 20th centuries, sanitary environments were understood better, and proper measures were taken, culminating in more controllable diseases. In the 20th century, immunizations were invented, and the health trend moved from treatment to control. Today aims to build a holistic society in which health education and preventative medicine supersede seeking medical attention after an ailment has occurred.

People are starting to recognize that exercise and happiness work together in illness prevention. Individuals might not often have authority over their well-being; however, they could make choices to boost their quality of life. Encouraging good healthcare has persisted as far as initiatives to enhance the community’s health have lasted. Health improvement is the process of encouraging individuals to take charge of and enhance their wellness. It focuses on various societal and environmental solutions rather than human acts. The nurse’s role in health advocacy is crucial since it encompasses engagement, care/service delivery, patient care, education, and investigation. In their report, Nilson and Thorell (2018) believe that by using evidence-based practice, physicians are pressing for change to tighten processes to increase patient care.
