COVID-19 has made its name unforgettable, posing threats to human mortality all over the world. With the rapidly spreading virus attacking millions of individuals of all ages, shapes, and sizes, responsible individuals retreat to the ‘comfort’ of their homes to isolate themselves from others in an attempt to stop the spread. After countless hours, days, weeks, and now months of quarantine, a new attacker takes its stand at the plate. With all the news, publicity, and stories going around about COVID-19, it is hard not to think about one’s health and well-being. Everywhere you look, anyone you talk to, COVID-19 makes itself widely known to the public, invading every conversation and news broadcasting. The worry and anxiety of contracting the virus as well as the fear of spreading it to loved ones filled everyone’s mind just as quickly as the spread of the virus. No one saw what else was lurking around the corner, attacking not only our physical health but our mental health. As millions of people go into hiding, ‘quarantine’ brings about another monster. New attackers such as fear, anxiety, stress, loneliness, isolation, hopelessness, confusion, trauma, depression, PTSD, irritability, violence, alcoholism, obesity, and more make their way to the frontline. This new enemy stealthily comes along, attacking feelings of belonging, identity roles, and lack of work, leading to poverty, distress, and emotional exhaustion. People are dealing with the loss of their usual routine, even this alone can be utterly vexatious, leading to a perpetual state of irritability. What makes this turn of events even worse is the uncertainty of it all. No one knows when life will go back to normal.
This pandemic, unfortunately, did not escape me either. When this whole coronavirus business started up, I really had no idea what to expect. At first, I thought I would get a much-needed vacation. But as the days went by, slowly but in the blink of an eye, my stress, anxiety, and feeling of impending doom prowled at the corner of every shadow. Before I knew it, I was swimming in stress, absolutely covered from my head to my toes in it. I always did well in school, but with my first ‘quarantined’ tests, my whole world came to a devastating halt. I had never gotten a grade so low and I instantly knew something must be wrong. The second test came and went and still, it seemed like my life really had turned upside down. It wasn’t until I started to research this topic did I really understood what was happening. I was stressed. The uncertainty, the isolation, the fear, and the anxiety had really built up. But I was fortunate; awareness of the problem together with the support of loved ones paid off and my mental well-being improved significantly.
As we can see, it’s not just physical health and the economy that is suffering, this pandemic is really taking a toll on our mental health, and my example is proof of that. The best way to go against this is to battle it ‘head first’. The first step is to be aware of the pandemic’s effects on our mental well-being, and then to find ways to counteract it.
