This audio file was created by a former student, Sheeyay Duncan (Pomo), who interviewed his grandmother (Mildred Duncan) for a project in an Ethnic Studies course. The interview included a discussion of the Bloody Island massacreLinks to an external site. in 1850, one of many that occurred throughout California around the time of the Gold Rush. Although this massacre occurred decades before Mildred Duncan was born, this audio reveals the significance of historical trauma as you can hear the pain in her voice when she speaking about this horrific event in the history of Pomo Indians.

Use the following questions to help you in framing a critical response based on the sources for this assignment:
What do we learn about California Indian history from the testimonial by Deborah Miranda? From Mildred Duncan? Where aspects of their testimonials included in history courses you have taken previously (high school, college, etc.)?
Are Governor Newsome’s apology and the establishment of the Truth and Healing Council positive steps forward? Why or why not?
