Here are the questions you may choose from. Pick only one to answer in your paper:
A “theme” is a central topic in a literary work. What is an important “theme” that Shakespeare develops over the course of the play, and why does he develop (what is Shakespeare trying to impress upon the reader) that “theme”? (ex. “elements of drama” – “protagonist” / “antagonist” / “characterization” / “anti-hero” / “setting”)
Is Hamlet of sound mind? Why or why not? Explain and support. (ex. “elements of drama” – “protagonist” / “antagonist” / “characterization”)
Does Hamlet really love Ophelia? Apply Shonagon’s theory of “love” to Shakespeare’s play. Is Hamlet a good or bad lover? Why or why not? Explain and support. (ex. “elements of drama” – protagonist / characterization / dialogue)
How is this text representative of “realism,” the concept of literature capturing life and people as they exist (without interpretation or exaggeration) and for what purpose? (ex. “elements of drama” – “imagery” / “dialogue” / “characterization,”)
How is this text representative of literary “naturalism,” the notion that humans are the products or victims of their environments and ultimately vulnerable to fate? (ex. “element of drama” – “setting”)?
How is this text representative of “satire” in exposing societal vice, folly, shortcoming or abuse? (ex. “element of drama” – “irony”)
How is this text representative of a “parable,” which is a work of realistic fiction that teaches the reader (or audience) a lesson? What is that lesson? (ex. “element of drama” – “tragic hero”)
In this assignment, you will show your ability to critically read, write, and think by organizing and structuring thought around a clear thesis that is plainly and solidly supported by textual evidence and your reasoning. You will also show that you have the ability to write an academic paper following the appropriate rules of grammar and mechanics. In discussing your interpretation, your paper should have an introductory paragraph (with a thesis statement) and a conclusion paragraph (that explains what we can learn from your argument/thesis). The body section should be at least 3 paragraphs. urthermore, utilize the “Elements of Drama” (character, protagonist, antagonist, setting, irony, soliloquy, etc.) as the basis for the claims in your interpretation / argument. Choose at least 1 “Element of Drama” to discuss and at most 3 “Elements of Drama” to discuss in showing how you are arriving at your interpretation of the play.
For this particular analysis, your text is The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare. Because Hamlet is a demanding text on many levels, your analysis will be limited to answering one question in your paper. In answering this question, you will demonstrate your ability to critically read, think, and show that in your writing. You will also demonstrate your ability to analyze, or interpret, a piece of literature and use examples from it to support your claims about it.
