For Essay 3, make any argument you like about any of the topics or issues we have read and discussed in class, or that you find interesting and compelling. It is important that you consider your argument carefully, that being said, expect your argument to evolve as your research informs your understanding of your chosen issue. It is my hope that the issue you choose for this essay is engaging and something you enjoy learning more about.
You will need to find at least three (3) scholarly sources for this essay from our school library’s databases. You will need to use at least five (5) pieces of textual information (direct quote, summary, paraphrase) from your sources. You can find more sources and have more citations, but six sources are required with at least one in-text citation from each.
We will spend time developing the argument through a working thesis, organizing and developing body paragraphs with topic sentences, and explaining textual evidence. We will create concessions, incorporate well-reasoned explanation and insights, and finally produce introductions and conclusions to your essay to inform and speak to the significance of your argument. We will also develop an annotated bibliography that will help finalize our research and develop our writing.
Minimum four 1750 words; about six to seven (6-7) pages.
An introductory paragraph in which you set up your thesis by introducing the context of your argument. That is, why the thesis is important for the reader to know.
Topic sentences that clearly relate to back to your thesis and central argument.
Develop body paragraphs with clear points in your topic sentence that connect back to your thesis.
Include specific information from your chosen textual evidence that elaborates and supports the thesis.
At least three (3) scholarly peer reviewed piece of textual evidence (utilizing an academic database).
At least three (5) sources total (you will likely need more).
Join sentences using coordinators and subordinators to show logical relationships between your ideas.
Transition sentences that connect and make relevant your ideas and assertions.
An acknowledgement of counter argument(s) with a concession.
Proper MLA formatting (12 point font, 1 inch margins, double spaced) with a Works Cited page.

Thesis: Social media has both good and bad effects on society. It helps people connect, build communities, and access diverse perspectives. However, it also harms mental health, promotes unrealistic standards, worsens social divisions and even spreads misinformation or disinformation at times. Such was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic, for this reason we need to carefully evaluate its role in modern society.
