OPEN Assignment # 3 -Summary/Central Idea, Language and Tone (Blank WORD Document ATTACHED) type your essay on it, save and submit through Blackboard
In a three (3) paragraph essay, first briefly SUMMARIZE the story’s content and state a CENTRAL IDEA (as discussed in Chapter 1 of Analyzing Short Stories pp. 1-10 and my supplementary Lecture in Syllabus Item # 4) at the end of the first paragraph.
Next , write a second paragraph on LANGUAGE after reading Chapter 6 in Analyzing Short Stories pp. 43-57 and my supplementary lecture contained in Syllabus Item # 9 in which you analyze three distinct aspects of language (with specific examples from the text of the chosen story). For example, you could write about Figurative Imagery, Contextual Symbolism, and Situational Irony. Which three you choose will depend on the story you’re analyzing.
Finally, write a third paragraph on TONE (after reading Chapter 7 in Analyzing Short Stories pp. 59-71 and my supplementary lecture contained in Syllabus Item # 9). You’ll first write about TONE in a general, holistic way – how the story made you feel while and after reading it – and then, more specifically, how three other distinct elements of language or the other elements, in a nuts-and-bolts, woofers-and-tweeters kind of way, are responsible for the tone. Remember, TONE like CHARACTER and SETTING can be static or dynamic. Be sure to say which it is in the story you analyze. This last paragraph will begin “The Tone of ‘ ‘ begins as ___________and then changes to______” or “The Tone of ‘ ‘ remains _______________throughout the story.”

Remember to link the discussions of LANGUAGE and TONE back to the CENTRAL IDEA at the conclusion of the second and third paragraphs, to help the essay cohere.
