Rough outline:
hook talks about how there are sustainability measures taking place for school buildings to improve the design. But other aspects remain the same, such as the fact that there are misleading labels – recycling bins and trash bins are labeled, but in reality, there is no separation and they end up mixed in the same dump.
Because of this, people think that there is no point in recycling at all, so they do not even try. In reality, there is value in recycling.
If the environment is so important, why aren’t there active measures for students to participate in sustainability? Why is it so hard for students to be properly educated about how to improve their environmental impact? For example, what can and cannot be placed in a recycling bin, what materials actually help the environment when they are recycled.
This is also due to other companies and businesses that do green washing: they want people to think they are more environmentally sustainable than they really are.
But we need to uncover all of these wrong assumptions and make everyone be transparent.
We should have a different attitude towards environmentalism – just like how much emphasis is placed on getting a job and making money because it impacts our future, there should be emphasis on how much we are doing to help the environment because it impacts our future.
Overall outline:
I. Introduction
A. Hook: Sustainability measures in school buildings and the issue of misleading labels
B. Thesis statement: While there are some actions taken towards sustainability, there are also misleading practices and a lack of proactive measures that hinder true progress towards a sustainable future.
C. Overview of the essay’s purpose and structure
II. Misleading Sustainability Practices
A. The issue of misleading recycling labels and the mixing of waste
B. Negative effects of misleading practices on public perception and motivation for recycling – makes people wonder what “sustainable practices” are actually sustainable?
C. Importance of educating individuals about proper recycling practices – what can and cannot be recycled, what materials actually help the environment when they are recycled (for ex: recycling paper uses much more energy than creating new paper and mulching older paper. In contrast, aluminum is good to recycle because recycling an aluminum can uses less energy than producing new aluminum to make a new can).
III. Lack of Active Measures for Student Participation in Sustainability
A. Questioning the absence of proactive sustainability encouragement in all areas
B. Impact of proper environmental education on student engagement and behaviors
C. The need for schools to prioritize sustainability initiatives and empower students to make a difference
IV. Greenwashing by Companies and Businesses
A. Definition and explanation of greenwashing
B. Examples of greenwashing practices and their impacts
C. The significance of exposing and addressing greenwashing to ensure genuine progress
V. Adopting a Different Attitude towards Environmentalism
A. Comparison with the emphasis on personal financial success – just like we invest in ourselves to prepare for jobs and making money, we are investing in our future by making actions towards improving the environment
B. Importance of recognizing the long-term impact of environmental actions and choices
C. Encouraging a shift in societal values towards valuing environmental stewardship
VI. Conclusion
A. Recap of the main points discussed in the essay
B. Call to action for individuals, educational institutions, and businesses to take proactive measures towards sustainability
C. Reiteration of the need for clear education and transparency in sustainability efforts
Hook/actual writing:
While I was in high school, I witnessed the transformation of my school’s buildings over the course of several years, remodeled with the incorporation of sustainability measures. One of the buildings in particular, where many of my classes were, went through construction and now includes glass walls, a two-story living green wall, photovoltaic and solar thermal arrays, and displacement ventilation. The building received recognition with many awards, including the Green California Schools Facilities Leadership Award for the integration of sustainable and open building design principles. With all of these steps toward sustainability taking place, you see more people being mindful about where they place their trash. But then you see a janitor cleaning out the trash bins. The lid of the bins have two openings: one for recycling and one for trash. There are seemingly different compartments for each category. But you are dismayed when you realize that all of the efforts were a waste of time as you watch a janitor lift the lid, revealing one big compartment for both the recycling and the trash to fall into.
It turns out that as other aspects of the school are improving, it turns attention away from other problems that are still occurring.
