What is involved in closing projects? Why should all projects be formally closed?
Closing a project involves several crucial steps. Firstly, it requires a thorough assessment to verify that all deliverables align with the predetermined criteria outlined in the project plan. Administrative tasks like releasing resources, documenting lessons learned, and obtaining stakeholder acceptance are also part of the process (Asana, 2022). Additionally, contracts and financial accounts related to the project need formal closure.
Formally closing projects is essential for various reasons. It marks a clear endpoint, allowing stakeholders to acknowledge the project’s completion and success. It ensures the proper transition of resources and team members to other endeavors (Asana, 2022). Documentation and evaluation at closure aid in future references and learning from the project experiences (Malsam, 2022). Furthermore, assessing the project’s performance against initial objectives supports improvement in future project management processes.
What advice about project closing is most beneficial to you? What other advice would you add?
One precious piece of advice for project closure is to develop a comprehensive checklist or closure plan early in the project’s lifecycle (Malsam, 2022). This plan should outline specific activities and milestones for closure, preventing crucial oversights during the project’s final stages (Asana, 2022). Involving all stakeholders ensures diverse perspectives are considered, contributing to a comprehensive evaluation and documentation of outcomes (Malsam, 2022).
Additionally, conducting a post-implementation review is crucial. It assesses the project’s deliverables and the project management processes employed throughout its lifecycle (Malsam, 2022). Documenting lessons learned and best practices ensures their application to future projects, enhancing overall organizational efficiency in project management.

Project teams dedicate significant time to project planning and underestimate project closure. Kerzner (2022) indicates that project closure is an important project management phase requiring equal attention. In this bid, exploring the activities involved in closing projects is critical. As the final stage of the project life cycle, project closure is marked by several steps. The first step includes arranging a post-mortem. Post-mortems are close-out meetings where key project stakeholders are invited. Here, the project manager and team discuss lessons learned, changes during the project, project constraints, goals and outcomes, and a summary of the transition plan. The second step entails completing paperwork. This step enables project managers to organize all documents using project management software. Contracts with vendors are also closed at this stage. Thirdly, project teams are gathered, and resources are released. Afterward, all documents are archived for future reference, and the team celebrates success. There are several reasons why projects should be closed. First and foremost, project closure ensures that the project’s original objectives are met. Also, project closure ensures all contracts with vendors or partners are closed. Finally, project closure offers a final report that indicates the lessons learned to ensure project teams use the project to improve future projects. However, several concerns exist regarding project closure. These include planning for project closing, identifying lessons learned, and celebrating the team. Setiawati & Ariani (2020) dictate that recognizing exemplary performance improves employee job satisfaction. As a result, the most important piece of advice is thanking the team and other stakeholders for their collaboration. This action is essential to ensure all individuals who participated in the project feel valued. However, organizations should also plan for employee training to ensure projects run as expected.

Training is more important than selection when it comes to building a productive sales team. A strong sales performance is not always ensured by innate personality qualities or specific interpersonal abilities, even though they can serve as a solid basis for success. Conversely, good training can greatly develop and improve the abilities needed for successful selling. Certainly, some people just seem to be born salespeople because of their extroverted personality, persuasiveness, or interpersonal skills. But choosing sales staff only based on these intrinsic traits could be constrictive (Ross & Lemkin, 2019). If candidates are just chosen based on their natural abilities, they may miss out on excellent salesmen who, given the correct support and training, have the potential to become top achievers. Training is crucial to developing and perfecting the fundamental abilities needed for successful sales. Effective training programs can teach, hone, and improve a variety of abilities, including techniques, methodologies, product knowledge, communication strategies, negotiating skills, and a grasp of customer psychology (Ross & Lemkin, 2019). Even those without a natural aptitude for sales can pick up these abilities and succeed in the industry.
Furthermore, constant learning and adaptation are required due to the dynamic nature of markets and changing customer expectations. Continuous training makes a sales staff more capable of handling changes in the market, the introduction of new products, or adjustments in consumer preferences. Selection is crucial and can be a good place to start since it might reveal possible possibilities, but thorough and continuous training is what shapes people into successful salesmen. It equips people with the skills, information, and methods required to prosper in the cutthroat field of sales (Ross & Lemkin, 2019). Consequently, while an individual’s success in sales may be influenced by certain innate traits, the training that is given is the most important component in creating a productive sales force. Selection only shows promise; the work of continuous training and development is what turns that potential into a highly productive sales force.

The sales field is a remarkable area in the business landscape. The field has received significant attention from the media and scholars in contemporary society. A common debate is the impact of training on developing an effective sales force. Opponents suggest that salespeople are born with interpersonal skills and personalities that boost their effectiveness in the sales field. However, I beg to differ with this claim. Amor (2019) indicates that salespeople require a mix of salesmanship and interpersonal and technical skills. Although recruitment agencies can evaluate an individual’s interpersonal skills before hiring them, judging one’s performance based on interpersonal skills is impractical. Instead, organizations should provide room for further development to nurture these abilities. Effective salespeople are achieved through sales training (Oh & Johnston, 2023). As a result, it is important to adopt sales training programs to increase the effectiveness of salespeople. These training programs ensure individuals improve their capacity, performance, and competence. Therefore, even individuals with poor interpersonal skills can transform into effective salespersons. This is because effective salespeople apply knowledge and skills acquired at their workplace (Oh & Johnston, 2023). These arguments indicate that it is unrealistic to determine one’s performance based on qualities attained at birth. Instead, organizations should pursue sales training to nurture effective salespeople.

In my recent purchase for a new laptop, the influence of the salesperson was critical in influencing my decision. When I walked into the store, the salesperson approached me with a genuine interest in learning about my needs. Their approach was not only courteous, but also strategic, as they began by inquiring about my usage needs and preferences. This initial interaction set a pleasant tone for the rest of the interaction. What I loved the most was their extensive understanding of the many laptop models available.
They went over numerous specifications, emphasizing the differences between processors, storage options, and display characteristics. This aided me in understanding the technical issues and making a better-informed decision. Furthermore, their ability to translate difficult technical jargon into simple terms was outstanding. The function of the salesperson expanded beyond product descriptions. They actively listened to my concerns about battery life and performance, providing feasible answers by recommending specific models that met my requirements.
Their openness about the limitations of specific models was refreshing, as it allowed me to effectively balance the advantages and downsides. Their assurances about after-sales service and warranty coverage provided another level of credibility to the entire process. The salesperson’s knowledge, sensitive attitude, and readiness to answer my concerns were critical in influencing my decision, making the purchasing experience consultative and personalized to my needs rather than transactional.

Salespeople have a significant impact on customers’ decision-making in the commerce sector. Hartmann et al. (2020) indicate that salespeople provide unique information that convinces customers to purchase a product. From a personal perspective, salespersons have affected my product choice several times. I once visited an electronic shop to purchase a laptop charger. As I looked around the shelves, I realized that the charger I wanted was out of stock. However, there were other chargers that I had not used. I stood stranded for about a minute as I thought of leaving the shop. Luckily, a salesperson approached me, and we interacted for about five minutes. During the five-minute talk, I expressed my concerns and stated that I had not used another brand since I purchased my laptop. Also, I indicated that I was worried the charger would stop working due to compatibility issues. I liked that the salesperson was attentive and keen on the details I provided. Effective salespeople use active listening to provide personalized experiences to customers (Itani et al., 2019). After expressing my concerns, the salesperson took me to a nearby room where we tested the charger with a laptop like mine. The salesperson proved that the charger was indeed compatible with my laptop. Also, he stated that the charger had a warranty. Therefore, I was assured I would be compensated if the charger did not work as described. I was satisfied with the information, and I quickly took the charger and walked to the payment desk to complete the purchase. I hope we can all agree that salespersons impact our purchase decisions.
