Ad Council’s PSA Fighting for Freedom sends a persuasive message that reminds me of the injustice and inequality of the world. I agree with the statement of the PSA; it encourages me to fight for the rights of every American. The most important part of the message, to me, is the fact that the freedoms mentioned in the PSA are not available to every American citizen, despite America being the land of freedom. The primary way used in this video to connect to the audience is by mentioning privileges that minorities lack in today’s America. For example, “the freedom to breathe” refers to the recent murder of George Floyd (Ad Council, 2020). The video uses pathos to invoke emotion in those sympathetic to the incident. Additionally, the video talks about the “freedom to live without fear, to drive through all 50 states, to sleep safely in our own beds” (Ad Council, 2020). By referring to these privileges that are usually absent in cases of LGBTQ representatives, women, and people of color, the message appeals to those who have similar experiences.
The Fighting for Freedom video is made for the citizens of America. According to the message, every American should fight for freedom. The PSA represents every group of modern society, mentioning their main differences: religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, race, and age (Ad Council, 2020). The representatives of every group are shown in the video as they are mentioned. This inclusion is the most important part of the ad, meaning that as long as some groups are deprived of freedom, every American must participate in the fight for it. However, due to the message “All lives can’t matter, until black lives matter” (Ad Council, 2020), the ad is misunderstood and considered aggressive by some people.
