Introduction

The chosen article journal paper for review was written and published by Bi X and Wang S. This article’s title is Parent-adolescent communication quality and life satisfaction: The mediating roles of autonomy and future orientation. The journal title is Psychology Research and Behavior Management. Its volume is 14, and the article was published on 21st July 2021. Page numbers range from 1091 to 1099, where all the written information in this review was obtained.

Statement of the Problem

The goal of this study was to investigate whether or not adolescent Chinese people’s sense of autonomy and future orientation mediate the connection between high-quality family communication and life happiness. The authors stress the impact of effective communication between parents and teenagers on how happy adolescents are. Family communication is crucial to the functioning of the family unit and significantly impacts how children grow. Family interaction is particularly important throughout the adolescent years because parents and children must adjust to the rapid psychological growth of teenagers and renegotiate their roles as authority figures (Bi & Wang, 2021). Life satisfaction is one of several adolescent developmental outcomes that may be influenced by the level of communication between parents and their children.

A happy family environment and smooth family functioning may result from open communication between parents and teenagers, which may enhance teenagers’ happiness. Teenagers who talk freely with their parents report higher levels of life happiness, whereas those who have communication barriers with their parents report lower life satisfaction (Bi & Wang, 2021). On the other hand, communication issues within the family, such as the reluctance to discuss personal sentiments and the avoidance of certain subjects, may result in miscommunications and confrontations between parents and teenagers, which may lower the teenagers’ happiness.

The Author’s Purpose

This study’s initial objective was to explore the relationship between teenagers’ happiness and the quality of parent-adolescent communication in Chinese culture. The second goal of this research was to look at how autonomy as well as future orientation mediated the relationship between life satisfaction and the effectiveness of communication among teenagers and their parents (Bi & Wang, 2021). Within the framework of the mediation paradigm, the authors aimed to investigate the independent and sequential mediating effects of autonomy and future orientation.

Approach And Hypothesis

A longitudinal strategy was employed in this study to evaluate the relationships existing between the quality of communication in a family, life satisfaction, and internal processes among Chinese teens. A one-year longitudinal design was used to collect data for the present study. The minimal size of the study sample was calculated using the open-source statistical language R with power = 0.80 parameters (Bi & Wang, 2021). The outcome revealed that 127 people would constitute the bare minimal sample size (Bi & Wang, 2021). Two hypotheses were derived from self-determination theory, evolutionary life history theory, and real-life data. Better contact with parents, such as greater openness and fewer communication issues, makes Chinese teenagers happy (Bi & Wang, 2021). Second, the connection between the effectiveness of parent-adolescent communication and life satisfaction would be mediated separately and successively by teenagers’ autonomy and future orientation.

Major Conclusion

This research is the first to investigate the interceding role of autonomy together with future orientation in the connection between the quality of communication in a family and life happiness. It also provides support for ideas of individual agency and evolutionary life-history analysis. According to the findings, teenagers’ happiness is positively correlated with high-quality family communication in the current Chinese culture. Additionally, the link between the effectiveness of family communication and teenagers’ life satisfaction might be separately and successively mediated by adolescents’ autonomy and future orientation (Bi & Wang, 2021). The findings of the correlation study demonstrated a favorable association between life happiness, autonomy, and family communication.

Through the mediating effects of autonomy and proactive personality, the frameworks utilized demonstrated how family communication quality predicted teenagers’ life satisfaction. Additionally, the connection between the effectiveness of family communication and life satisfaction was mediated both separately and sequentially by autonomy and future orientation. Adolescents need proper communication within their families since this is the time in life when a teenager can get spoilt and live a miserable life. For this reason, parents or guardians should always make communication and understand key progressive factors in a family.

Recommendations

Teenagers need the flexibility to explore their interests, beliefs, and aspirations, as well as the ability to create a future direction. When adolescents have enough freedom, they may plan for the future, set goals for themselves, and assess potential options in light of their interests and beliefs rather than in response to peer pressure or parental expectations. In other words, adolescents’ growing sense of autonomy may serve as a psychological asset in choosing a life path. Open communication and a happy home atmosphere are the responsibility of parents. Parents should also foster their children’s growing sense of independence and focus on the future to boost their children’s happiness. As a result, psychologists should make it a priority to improve teenagers’ quality of life by, among other things, providing therapy to families with communication problems, helping parents satisfy adolescents’ desires for autonomy, and developing programs that inspire optimism about the future. For the family to have a better communication strategy, the members should have well-defined discipline where the young ones accept corrections from their seniors.
