Abstract

In this study it is intend to carry out static analysis on cricket bat for English willow bat at different points on blade of the bat by applying load obtained from the specific ball speeds. The author is trying to analyze the behavior of existing material in bat handle for load applied. Material in bat handle is changed and checked for its static performance. The bat was then modeled accordingly in Solid works and was imported to ANSYS Workbench for static analysis.

Introduction

Cricket bats were originally made out of a single piece of wood. Bats were made out of two pieces of timber, usually just another piece of willow spliced into the handle. In the 1850s, there was another evolution to the handle, with cane, usually Manaus Cane, being introduced in 1853. This subsequently improved the balance of the bat, but still did not adequately attenuate the shock. Three years later in 1856, handles took the form they have maintained until now. Canes were split and then laminated back together with rubber between the canes. The rubber helped dampen down the shock of the ball hitting the bat. This technique dealt with the slipping and the 1850’s technology has stood the rest of time.

Objective

The main objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of cricket bat handle. Design optimization for the same model is done by adding the suitable material in bat handle and checked for its deformation and stresses.

Methodology: The model of Cricket bat is done in SOLIDWORKS software. The model is imported to ANSYS software. Deformation of the existing material for static load is analyzed, thereafter material is changed for the bat handle and then load is applied

Static Structural Analysis

Every problem whenever allowed to be solved for finite element analysis, first step it would be subjected to is a case of static structural analysis. Further, the work will be subjected to various other types of analysis.

Conclusion

The deformation developed in bat with carbon insert is less than that of With normal insert. Hence it results longer life of bat. Using carbon fiber insert is best material to be used in bat handle.
