Deciding whether or not to go to University was a very difficult decision for me. I was so indecisive about every thought that went through my brain. I would think about all the positives and negatives of whether I went to university or not and if it was the right choice for me. My family and friends also helped me to think about what would be best for me for my future career as I was confused about what I wanted to work as in the future. My family and friends all helped by giving their advice and said in the end it is up to me to make the decision and that they would support me through any hardship I come across. This boosted my motivation to go to university, as I knew that I would always have people in my life to help me even if I struggled with the work. “We are ultimately the one who decides to hang on to a feeling or thought or to do something about it” (Vailes, 2017). This has made me have a more open and positive mindset in believing in myself to do what I feel is best for my future. I decided that I wanted to become a primary school teacher and to do that I must go to university. I also wanted to try something new and go to university to have the experience of exploring the wide range of opportunities that are available as well as socializing and making new friends within my course to also benefit me to improve and help develop my growth as an individual.

The idea of actually going to university on the first day was nerve-wracking for me. I was feeling so many emotions all at once. I was happy and excited thinking about walking into my first lecture and being ready to learn and experience life at university. I was also anxious and scared about if I would make any friends as none of my close friends were going to the same university as me and being alone in a new environment scared me. After being assigned into groups for the Social Worlds module, it has helped me to come out of my comfort zone. The group I have been assigned to is really friendly, kind, and helpful. It turns out I knew one of the students that was in my group as we went to the same secondary together. This also made me feel more comfortable as I had someone I knew that I could talk to properly. One quote from the literature readings states; “To be in full bloom, a flower needs to be open with all its petals wide.” (Vailes 2017, P.86). This gives me more of an understanding that the more you get to know people, the more open you can become with yourself and feel more comfortable with others around you. This can help me to fulfill my academic potential as working in groups can help me to work more efficiently and effectively as I will also be able to get all of my points across and bring more ideas to the table. Furthermore, this can also help to fulfill my achievements in my future career as a primary school teacher as I will be able to help children work together in groups and help to bring out the uniqueness of each child’s mind.

Another experience that I have had and learned from in this module at university is my journey in traveling to university. On the first day of university, I had this fixed mindset set as quoted from Dweck (2012, p.24) which states that “mindsets are just beliefs” I was going to ensure that I came in early for my first-ever seminar and hopefully continue to be punctual for all the other seminars and lectures throughout my years I university. I walked into the Stratford Campus on the first day and asked where my first morning seminar was and I was told that it was on the other campus. This irritated me as I tried to be on time and I wasn’t. I had to then walk to the USS campus, which was 10 minutes away. I managed to find it and I also found the room that my seminar was in. As I walked in I apologized sincerely and explained why I had come late due to going to the wrong campus. The teacher was nice and considerate about it and made me feel so welcome to join the class as I didn’t miss out on any learning, which was good. This experience and module have given me an understanding of how having a fixed mindset belief can help me to improve my academic studies at university I can always keep my mindset and develop it when it comes to doing the assignment as I can ensure that I am on track and submit everything before all my deadlines but making sure to always get my work done and not get distracted. This mindset can also help me with my future career as a primary school teacher as I have learned to improve my time management skills and be punctual at all times. However, I feel as though when I work too hard my energy is drained I don’t relax enough. One quote states, “When we meditate we become aware of many things that elude us when we are racing about our daily lives” (Cottrell, 2018). This highlights how meditating and ensuring that I get enough sleep can help me to relax so I can then be wide awake and in a good mood throughout the day ready for studying at university. I would also help children to learn better as I would be more enthusiastic and passionate when my health and well-being are good.
