These are some examples of one of the bad experiences the Jews had to face during the holocaust. This is how Elie Wiesel felt in Night by Elie Wiesel himself. Wiesel is a Jew during the holocaust who is sent with his father to different concentration camps. He and his father face a lot of challenges to the point where he questions his life every day. Throughout Night, there is a great deal of dehumanization taking place in the form of starvation, brutality, and forced labor.
Wiesel often experienced starvation as a form of dehumanization. Elie begins to starve when Elie and everyone else in the concentration camps are not given anything to eat or drink. Elie says “We stayed at Gleiwitz for three days. Three days without food or drink.” Elie is surprised when one of the concentration camps he is sent to for a short amount of time, provides nothing to eat or drink, causing him to starve. After the difficult experience, Elie’s stomach starves once again.
Another form of dehumanization that Elie faces is brutality. Elie experiences quite a bit of brutality while being in the concentration camps. Then Elie says “Then I was aware of nothing but the strokes of the whip.” Since Elie witnessed something he wasn’t supposed to he was punished. Elie was laid on a box and was beaten with a whip on the back that almost killed him. Another example of the hard treatment was when his father was struck on the head for no reason. on page 37. Elie’s father simply walked up to the soldier to ask him an innocent question. Instead of an answer, he got a terrible hit to the head that nearly knocked him out. Due to these experiences, many Jews were wounded and left with scars.
Another form of dehumanization was forced labor. Elie was overworked so much it came to the point where he was too weak to work. So his friends and his father had to encourage him in any way to move on. For no reason one of the Nazi soldiers beat Elie until he was covered in blood. Then, Elie was sent back to work as if nothing had happened. Even though he was hurting they still forced Elie to work just as hard as he was before.
Those were the hardships that the Jews had to go through. The Jews struggled with many factors of suffering throughout the Holocaust, not only did they get beat they were forced labor, and starvation, but in many other ways as well. Such as losing their loved ones, getting separated from their loved ones, and going to a point where they mentally wish to die every day. Even though there was more was they were treated those were the ones that stuck out to me.
