One day, my family and I decided to visit the zoo. For our family trip, we chose Melbourne Zoo, Australia’s oldest zoo.

Melbourne Zoo is located in Royal Park in Parkville. It has a variety of animals ranging from Australian animals to animals from Africa. They are involved with conservation programs in 6 countries, 8 grassroots community conservation campaigns, and more than 50 research projects. Some amazing thing Melbourne Zoo has achieved is successfully breeding the Baw Baw frog. They also raised enough funds to plant 4,000 trees to restore the honeyeater habitat.

Speaking from the experience during my trip to the zoo, they are very involved in their fighting extinction organizations. The experience was quite educational, for example, I learned that the palm oil business is contributing to the decline of orangutans, which is one of the SOS animals. Speaking of which, the unique animal I have chosen from Melbourne Zoo is the long-nosed fur seal, which I want to talk about in more detail.

Arctocephalus forsteri, which is also known as the long-nosed fur seal. As I learned, they are mainly found in South and Western Australia, as well as in New Zealand. They often inhabit rocky coastlines and offshore islands. Long-nosed fur seals’ diets vary depending on where they are and what the situation is. Their whiskers help them locate their food by picking up vibrations. Long-nosed fur seals feed mainly on fish, squid, shearwaters, and sometimes penguins. Their natural habitat has large jumbles of angular rocks and smooth rock platforms and sometimes includes vegetated areas with tussock and scrub which are usually used for breeding and nurturing of seal pups. Whereas the zoo’s alternate habitat contains built concrete walls with slopes and glass panels to allow people to see the seals. Some known predators include sharks, orcas, leopard seals, New Zealand sea lions, and humans. The few antipredator adaptations that long-nosed fur seals have acquired are the ability to swim, swiftly climb onto the shore, and their coat color that blends into rocks. During my visit to Melbourne Zoo, I learned that long-nosed fur seals were a source of clothing and food in the Polynesian culture. Also, when European sealers arrived in the 19th century, they nearly caused the extinction of long-nosed fur seals.

All in all, this family trip to Melbourne Zoo was a great time together that not only gave us a glimpse of the magical world of nature but also increased our knowledge of its inhabitants, especially long-nosed fur seals. This zoo is definitely worth everyone’s attention.
