As a child, my favorite time of year was the summer time, because it meant I could go and visit my family. Most of my family are from and still live in a small seaside town called Lowestoft, which is located in the south-east of England. Every visit back home is important to me in its own way, but my trip to England in the summer of 2016 made me realize just how special my family is. From playing board games till midnight, going shopping in the tiny lanes of Norwich, or stopping at a boat dock in the middle of nowhere; every moment from that trip was memorable to me.
On the Wednesday after we arrived home in May 2016, we made our annual trip to the city of Norwich, which is about thirty miles away from my Grandparents’ house. Not only does it have the closest mall to us, but there is also a castle located in the center of the city. Most years we just shop and walk around Norwich, but my dad thought it would be a good idea to revisit the castle this year. Although I hadn’t been since I was little, everything felt so familiar to me. The broken brick walls, the creepy cardboard cutouts that talked when we walked by, and creaking of the wooden stairs as we entered the foyer. Being able to spend some time with my loved ones at somewhere that is so memorable to me was truly very special. Unfortunately, my grandad is unable to walk around with us as much as he used to, so he opted to stay home that day. He does, however, love a good museum, so the next day that is exactly where we went. There was a flight museum about an hour away that my grandad said he’d always wanted to go to. It was an easy drive, with laughs and giggles over grandma’s cheesy jokes. “Does anyone know why there are gates around cemeteries”, she said as we went past the town cemetery, “because people are just dying to get in!”. Although, we all knew Grandma Ann had most likely found the joke somewhere on the Internet, we still couldn’t contain our chuckles. It was a relatively small museum with both an outside and inside exhibit. As we walked on the stone path leading to the larger planes, my grandad pointed out the ones he used to work on during the Second World War. He can talk for hours and hours about his past and although it used to bore me as a child, I now find it fascinating. We finished our day at the museum at around three in the afternoon. Everyone was tired, cold, and ready to cozy up at home.
On the rainy evenings, my aunt usually came over to play board games with us. Monopoly was our favorite, because it occupied our time until we went to bed. That was the main reason grandad never wanted to play that with us, because he liked to watch the television in the evening. If we ever wanted him to join us, we had to play cards, which he can be very competitive at. One night, my aunt could not make it over for game night, so my grandad asked if I would like to go to stamp club with him. He has collected stamps since he was a child and joined the local stamp club forty years ago. It was amazing to see all the different types of people and hear their stories about the history of their collections.
At the end of our trip, the sun finally came out. We had just enough days left to rent a motorboat, spend a day on the beach, and take a trip to the go-karting track. We rented the boat at the docks in Oulton Broad, which is a small lake in the west side of Lowestoft. Even though it takes a while to get around the water, since the rustic blue boats were so slow, it was one of my favorite memories. The flowers were the brightest I’ve ever seen them. Yellow, blue, and pink tulips were spread across the bank. After we drifted along the lake for over half an hour, we decided to dock at a pub. We ordered lunch and chatted about how beautiful it was outside. That weather held out until we went back home to Texas and I could not have been more thankful. We were able to play mini golf by the beach till it got too cold to even move and the ground was dry enough to drive as fast as we wanted on the karting track on our last day. It was almost too perfect of an end to our trip.
When it was time to go, I was more emotional than the year before. As I get older, I realize what little time I have with my family. I only get to see my loved once a year, I have only spent time with them seventeen times, and time is so valuable. That’s what made this trip so important to me, I learned that family is the most important thing in life. I appreciate every second I get with my them and I hope to never forget how special these memories are.
