Topic
Changing, evolving, developing, becoming: we all experience changes over time in the ways that we think and behave. Stories about how we evolved or changed for the better can be interesting to readers. For instance, overcoming an addiction, becoming confident about a subject or skill, or taking charge of one’s physical health are changes that happen over time and have a positive effect on one’s life.
Write a reflective essay in which you discuss the significance of a particular event in your life. Make sure that your essay meets these criteria:
A general audience would be able to relate to the topic. A general audience would find the topic interesting.
The essay includes both an account of the significant moment AND your reflective insights about that moment.
How to Proceed
Pages 96 (“Selecting a Topic”) and 97 (“Planning”) of your book explain how to choose a topic and what to do next.
Once you decide which topic you want to write about, develop a working thesis statement. Your thesis statement needs two parts: the topic and the controlling idea (your opinion about or attitude toward the topic). Make sure that your thesis is structured correctly. It cannot be in the form of a question. Also, do not “announce” your thesis by saying “This paper will be about…” or “I will write about…”
After you have written a thesis statement, then begin outlining your paper. Decide what points you will address in the body paragraphs of your paper. Make only one point per body paragraph.
Your paper should begin with an introductory paragraph that ends with your thesis statement.
The body paragraphs should develop your thesis statement.
Your essay should end with a concluding paragraph that brings closure to your paper. Do not mention any new information in your conclusion.
Formatting and Citing Correctly
Your paper must be typed in MLA format. It should be double spaced with 12-point font. In the top left of the first page should be your name, my name, course number, and date you are submitting the paper. At the top right of every page should be your last name and the page number.
This week’s module contains information about MLA formatting, so you should refer to those resources as needed.
