By comprehending the repercussions of their acts and thinking critically, students may increase their awareness of their rights and duties as citizens (Noula, 2022). This may lead to a better educated and engaged population that can participate in the political process. To enhance critical thinking among South African students, it is vital first to comprehend their educational background (Zimba et al., 2021). This includes learning about South Africa’s history of racial segregation and inequality, the present educational system and its consequences for student learning, and comprehending the numerous elements, such as socioeconomic position, gender, and ethnicity, that influence student learning.

This project seeks to determine how pupils in South Africa might be encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills to promote democratic citizenship. The research aims to understand the environment in which children learn, including the history of racial segregation and inequality in South Africa and the modern educational system and its effects on student learning. Subsequently, a deeper understanding of the concept or problem is formed to achieve the research objectives, and a more apparent developmental path for subsequent work becomes evident. This research’s results may influence educational reform in South Africa to develop students’ critical thinking and democratic citizenship.
