Example of gaining the attention of peers to complete a communication task

Gaining attention of the audience especially the co-workers or peers in order to attain the desired outcome is one of the challenging tasks. Besides, ways of gaining attention differs depending on the audience (Denning, 2011). However, one of the methods I found working in most circumstances is the use of questions and keeping the answers of the questions relevant. In most cases, I relate the current themes and issues to a series of questions that tend to evoke the feelings of the immediate need to address the issues. In fact, the attention of the workers is immediately drawn because they tend to draw a large picture from the series of the questions being asked. With the provision of the factual and relevant answers, the co-workers tend to relate whatever is in their minds and the answers provide. As such, their attention is drawn to what is being communicated in order to complete the given task (Denning, 2011).

Even though the use of questions remains useful in most of the circumstances, other methods such as telling the true and relevant story, using striking metaphor, initiation unpredicted exercise as well as sharing the problems of the peers and co-workers have also been applied to draw the attention (Denning, 2011). However, in order to effectively communicate the desired goal, certain enablers such as truthful commitment to a clear and inspiring change idea that is illuminated by narrative intelligence, appropriate body language and acknowledgement of the position of the co-workers or peers must be present (Denning, 2011).

Why communication leadership needs to be a continuum of improvements throughout career

Communication is a critical component of enabling change within an organization. Initiating change depends on the manner in which leaders communicate with the intended audience (Barrett, 2013). Besides, drawing the workers, peers or the target audience towards the desired change depends on the communication techniques employed by the leader. As such, constant enhancement of the communication techniques becomes desirable. Besides, the continuous changes in the communication landscape make it necessary for leaders to continuously update their communication skills. Leaders should not just communicate change but also inspire the desired transformations within the organizations (Denning, 2011). In order to inspire change within the organization, leaders are required to constant update their communication techniques to communicate effectively.
