Sample: ‘Golden Girls’ at ‘227’
As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, many of her favorite shows became my favorite shows. I still watch reruns of dated sitcoms and have a love for old films. Two shows that were always playing in the background of my childhood were The Golden Girls and 227. Both sitcoms aired in 1985 on NBC. The first followed a group of four senior ladies living in Miami under one roof. The ladies were funny, refreshingly honest about life’s tragedies and triumphs, and shared a strong sisterly bond. Variety called it “a funny, fast-paced, well-written sitcom with all the earmarks of a potential hit” (Television Academy Foundation). 227 featured a middle-class Black family and their apartment community of friends and family in a rapidly changing Washington, D.C. Both shows featured bizarre and hilarious scenarios based in a loving home environment. However, as an adult I noticed, that as much as I could easily access the witty barbs between four mature single women in Miami, I was almost never able to find reruns or streaming access to the cast of the happy Black community emphasized in 227? Why was this? Was it the fact that 227 was a spin-off of The Jeffersons, and did not hold up well to its fresh new competitors? Or was Golden Girls easier to relate to? I decided to investigate these questions…
