Assignment 1:
Welcome to the discussion on Analyzing Media Strategies in Political Campaigns This platform serves as a space for conversations and critical evaluations of media strategies and materials used in political campaigns. Utilizing a range of media formats—campaign advertisements, social media posts, press releases, and broadcasts—you are encouraged to critically evaluate how these media strategies influence public perception and voter behavior. Please adhere to the following guidelines when participating:
Initial Post (Worth 15 points each):
Each student is required to create two initial posts in separate threads.
For each initial post, present one piece of campaign media. The options are as follows:Persuasive Piece: A media article, advertisement, or segment that aims to shape public opinion in favor of a particular candidate or policy.
Informative Piece: A media article, advertisement, or segment that aims to provide factual information regarding a candidate’s position, past voting record, or policy proposal.
Electoral materials from campaigns may also be analyzed in terms of their media strategy and messaging.
Acceptable formats for these pieces include campaign advertisements, social media posts, press releases, or news broadcasts related to a campaign. You can mix and match or post pieces of similar types. Topics should focus on political campaigns and elections.
Accompany each campaign media link with a critique that discusses its strengths and/or weaknesses. This should include not only techniques like priming, framing, or cultivating, but also more explicit elements like the music, visuals, and word choice used to influence the audience. Discuss how these elements contribute to the campaign’s overall media strategy and effectiveness in reaching and persuading voters.
Your post should be well-reasoned, offering thoughtful insights into the techniques employed by the campaign piece, its accuracy, and its attempt (or lack thereof) to provide nuanced information.
Responses to Peers (Worth 5 points each):
Each student is required to respond substantively to at least four peers across their initial posts.
Responses should go beyond simple agreement (“I agree”) and engage in meaningful discussion.
Point out areas of agreement, disagreement, or overlooked considerations within your peers’ critiques.
Aim to foster constructive dialogue by providing well-justified viewpoints and enhancing the overall conversation.
Response 1: George W. Bush 2000 Presidential Campaign Ad – YouTube
This ad from George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign is an example of an informative piece. The piece includes images of George W. Bush meeting with local people, insinuating that he is an “every man.” It includes footage of him speaking to large audiences, alluding to his ability to lead people and capture their attention. The ad informs the viewer of Bush’s successes while serving as the Governor of Texas, mentioning his introduction of state tax cuts and reduced government spending. Advertising his perceived triumphs as Governor frames Bush as an accomplished and qualified candidate for president. The ad also highlights the changes he initiated in the Texas public school system while displaying images of George W. Bush and his wife, Laura. Government spending, taxes, and public education have always been important issues to the nation, therefore it was wise for the campaign to highlight them. Including the footage of Bush and his wife with school children, as well as another image of Bush with a group of joyful children, enhances his image and contributes to framing him as a loving family man who will prioritize the nations children.
Response 2: Bush/Cheney 2000 Campaign Ad – YouTube
This ad for Bush/Cheney from the 2000 presidential campaign is an example of a persuasive piece. In this ad, the Bush/Cheney campaign utilizes the opinion of a local Texan Phyllis Hunter to advertise the advances made in child literacy while Bush served as the Texas Governor. Ms. Hunter was likely chosen for this ad in an attempt to influence women and people of color because race and women’s rights are often critical topics in political campaigning. The choice to center the ad around Ms. Hunter primes the audience to believe that Bush supports women and people of color. Choosing to have Ms. Hunter refer to the candidate as “George” helps frame the ad (and the candidate) as easy going and folksy; it insinuates that Bush is a man of the people and someone you could be friends with. Focusing on early childhood education and literacy appeals to a substantial proportion of the population and would be persuasive for anyone who has young children in their lives. The creators of this ad were wise to focus on education, literacy, and creating opportunities for children because they are non-partisan, indisputable issues.
Response 3:The Speech that Made Obama President – YouTube
President Obama’s campaign was very persuasive to all people, primarily people of color. He came in with a mission and the mission was to get white people to believe in him as a black man while tagging along black people. His campaigns were persuasive in the hopes they gave to black people as black men and the trust he wanted white people to have in him as a man of color. He persuaded the intentions of white Americans that, as a black man, he could do well above and beyond the notions they had towards a black man. His campaigns persuaded everyone around the nation that colors should not matter when choosing a president, and what should matter is the intention behind the leadership intentions, a black candidate brings to the table. His persuasion and winning of the 2008 campaign gave black politicians and voters hope as an American. Also, he used social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to reach the current generation of voters to see the importance of voting, by engaging them on social media platforms without disregarding their opinions.
Response 4:Election Turnout Record: Biden Crosses 80 Million Votes : NPR
This article aims directly at the past voting records of President Biden, starting from when he was a senator, the vice president, and now the president. The record in this article indicated the progress and the declined stages of president Biden voting records, as a vice president, but most importantly, as a running mate of president trump in 2021. The paper, as shown, indicated how many votes were collected on behalf of President Biden and how many people voted for him compared to Trump in 2021. This information, I believe, was provided based on fact and the accuracy of voter count during the election.
