Discussions Part 1: Briefly define trait theory and Allport, Cattel, and Eysenc
Discussions Part 1: Briefly define trait theory and Allport, Cattel, and Eysenck’s specific theories. Which are you most drawn to and why? After reading this chapter, do you think that every individual on this planet has a unique set of personality traits that make them who they are? Or do you think that it is possible to identify a set of traits that is universal and that can serve to “type” people (i.e. Narcissist, Extrovert, Idealist, etc.)? Why do you think this? Part 2: What do behaviorists believe about difficult personality types (i.e. personality disorder)? What do they think the causes are? How do they assess the “ABCs” in order to understand how a person’s personality was developed? How do they argue that personality disorders or mental illness can be treated? After answering, provide a concrete example, either of someone in your life or someone in pop culture, where the behaviorist theory of personality development applies. How would you endeavor to help them if you were a behavioral psychologist? Reference 1
Discussion PART 1: One of your readings this week (Chapter 18) ended with some very interesting critical thinking questions. I’ll post them below and you can choose TWO of these to answer. You do not need to answer all of them, just two. Argue that consciousness has been neglected. Who is truly a holistic personologist? Why is “uniqueness” so crucial to the conception of personality? Argue for the increased use of experimentation in future personality research. Where do you stand on Free Will? In the future, will there be a role for philosophy in the study of personality? What will be the value of case histories in the future study of personality? Whose present-day theories are most likely to carry over into the future? Reference 2
Discussion This week is a heavy week – we cover all of the personality disorders, of which there are many! Each fascinating in their own way. The chances that you know someone with some (or all!) of these traits is pretty high, so personality disorders are usually pretty interesting to study for that reason. Part 1: Upon reading about each of the disorders, choose the one that sticks out most to you. Take a stab at writing a very brief character sketch of someone with this disorder – including behaviors, reactions, symptoms, and their behavior’s effect on them and those around them. Maybe not tell us which one you are doing, so we can all take our best guess! Part 2: A lot of personality disorders share behaviors with other DSM-5 mental health disorders yet are not the same thing. For example, OCD is not the same thing as OCPD. Avoidant personality disorder is not the same thing as social phobia. Schizotypal or paranoid personality disorders are not the same as schizophrenia. Choose a personality disorder that shares qualities with another mental health condition and discuss the similarities and differences between both. If a clinician were trying to diagnosis between one or the other, what would be the key distinguishers? Reference 3 See less
