Discussion Post 4: Phage Therapy
students are to make 1) a primary post and 2) a secondary post as follows: PLEASE INCLUDE SOURCES
1. Primary Post:
For the primary post, state your decision if you are for or against the use of Phage Therapy to treat bacterial diseases. Be sure to consider and state in your argument what some short and long-term positive effects and negative consequences of your decision are. Also, highlight the ethical issues between stakeholder rights. Examples of stakeholders to consider are: the patient, the health care industry, pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, scientific researchers, general population, etc.
2. Secondary Post:
After submitting your primary post, browse through the other students post, then:
1. Respond to a person that you agreed with their decision and state why you agreed with them.
2. Respond to a person that either made a different decision or presented a different reasoning than you. State whether you agree or disagree with their reasoning and why.
Respond person 1: Phages have the ability to target and kill bacteria. They have been shown to kill multi drug resistant bacteria. the phages are not alvie or dead becuase it is a virus. It does not enter the bacteria completely, it only injects its DNA in the bacteria killing the bacteria. They multiply very easily until the bacteria dies and lyses releases phages throughout the body. If bacteria tried to build immunity to phases, they would lose their resistance to antibiotics. The probem with the overuse of antibiotics to kill a bacteria will cause further harm to the human system killing off good bacteria and allowing for spores to go into a stress state allowing them to flourish like C-diff. They are also resistant to most treatment. There is no regulation on the use of phages which could also propose a problem.
I feel that if the use of phages gets studied by the FDA more, it could be a very useful treatment if all attempts have been made and failed. This can decrease the use of antibiotic use decreasing the risk of further illnesses and even decrease antibiotic resistance. Although it is dangerous right now becuase there is lack of study and regulation to this treatment, i think there is good promise for it to be successful and helpful to those in need after FDA approval and study.
Respond person 2: Bacteriophages are viruses found in soil, sewage, and other water sources that bacteria live in. They function naturally in our environment to keep balance. Bacteriophage therapy, or phage therapy, is a concept that has been around for several decades and is readily used in other countries to treat bacterial illness. The virus binds to a bacteria and injects its genes into the bacterial cell, which multiplies eventually causing them to burst. Once the bacteria is lysed and dies, the bacteriophage stops multiplying and can lay dormant until more bacteria show up. Currently this application is not approved for use in the USA. Since antibiotic use removes good bacteria from our microbiome which can lead to adverse side effects and also result in antibiotic resistant bacteria that cannot be treated, I feel it is worth considering. However, since little is known about its effectiveness or about potential unwanted effects, I feel that more clinical trials and additional research is necessary. I work in pediatrics and see antibiotic abuse daily. Despite our efforts as healthcare professionals to advise parents that their child is suffering from an acute viral illness, the pressure to give them antibiotics unnecessarily is unfortunately common. There was a point in the beginning of last year and slightly this fall that we could not find any pharmacies that had antibiotics in stock due to its overuse. As antibiotics are prescribed more, there is growing concern for antibiotic resistance and unavailability. Bacteriophages could be the solution to this problem, if we were to gain adequate knowledge.
