We live in an extremely diverse world. There are millions of people who have their own unique cultures, mentalities, and beliefs. This diversity is an integral part of peoples lives as they interact with each other and benefit from this cooperation. Moreover, the modern globalized society provides numerous opportunities for improved communication and increased mutual understanding. However, despite these factors, there are still such problems as discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, mentality, sex, or gender, biased attitudes to some minorities, and widespread stereotypical thinking. These types of discrimination can negatively impact peoples lives and interfere with their basic rights. For this reason, there are numerous attempts to draw peoples attention to these issues and encourage their reconsideration.

For instance, the article by Iyer, Why 100 Women Just Marched 100 Miles, reveals one of the most important problems of modern U.S. society. All participants of the event had different backgrounds, faiths, and nationalities; however, they all wanted to attract societys attention to the unfair and discriminative immigration policies (Iyer). For instance, participants stated that undocumented domestic workers or caregivers had practically no legal protection (Iyer). Additionally, very often, people cannot reunite with their family members because of inefficient immigration policies, such as problems with visa applications (Iyer). Indeed, it is generally considered that there is a serious immigration crisis, meaning that there is a certain population group that suffers from discrimination and intolerant attitudes, which is unacceptable in modern humanistic society.

Sleighels article touches upon a similar issue. The author focuses on one problem the majority of transgender people face. The fact is that representative of this group experience a high risk of unemployment (Sleighel). There are different reasons for this. First of all, many individuals have a biased attitude towards this group of people and use discriminative patterns during recruitment (Sleighel). For this reason, the activist Michaela Mendelsohn suggested a specific job placement program to provide transgender applicants with the opportunity to find a job and earn money (Sleighel). This California Transgender Workplace Project (CTWP) has become an important tool to alter peoples mentalities and aid the struggle against discrimination and biased attitudes shown to minorities such as transgender people.

Comparing these two articles, while they touch upon different aspects, both papers reveal some problematic issues peculiar to modern society. The fact is that despite numerous attempts to cultivate a new, tolerant and humanistic community, there are still multiple social stigmas like discrimination and biased attitudes shown towards minorities. The authors delve into different manifestations of these problems. Both immigrants and transgender people remain vulnerable population groups as they suffer from the uncertainty of their social status and lack of protection from the government (Iyer; Sleighel). People from different countries might be deported and face difficulties while trying to reunite with their families. Similarly, transgender people face the problem of not being able to overcome barriers created by discriminative attitudes to their status.

Altogether, both these articles demonstrate the existence of a significant problem in modern society. The absence of clear and potent laws regulating the life of immigrants and providing them with appropriate rights, along with the disregard of the problem of transgender people, results in the emergence of problematic situations and the cultivation of discriminative patterns which should be unacceptable in the modern age. For this reason, it is critical to attract attention to these issues and utilize all resources to encourage the wider population to reconsider any such attitudes that they might hold.
