Students acquire knowledge from schools. ‘Knowledge’ is mostly taught by a teacher, despite that some students gain knowledge by self-study. Most of us go to school when we were young, during the age when our habit and way of thinking is still developing. Therefore, a good teacher should not only have strong skills to explain things clearly to others but also need to listen to what students say. Most of the teachers I met don’t have any other impact on my life besides teaching class materials. However, there was one teacher who had both characteristics that I believe a good teacher should have. She was my physics teacher and the homeroom advisor when I was in middle school in China.

The reason that I believe that the skill to explain things overrides the academic skill is that strong academic skill belongs to the teacher only if he or she cannot explain their knowledge to students. As students, we need clear instructions and guidance from a teacher. Since we have no clue about new materials, we need a teacher to help us. A teacher who can’t explain things to students but have strong academic skills is not a good teacher, but a good researcher, because researchers don’t need to explain things to those who have no clue about what he is doing. My math teacher was the type who cannot explain things well. As a result, almost everyone failed his class, except those who are smart and studied in the weekend school. My physics teacher was not only a professional in physics but also good at explaining things in clear, logical, and easy sentences. Instead of simply reading the provided answer, she was able to develop several explanations for the corresponding students (those who are smart and those who are not good at studying). With her help, most of the students in my class got good grades in physics.

When we go to school, we always have lots of trouble. For example, we cannot understand the class material, we are having trouble getting good grades, we are having trouble with classmates, we are doing wrong things, etc. My physics was bad. Getting 80 or above was a dream for me. I also liked to fight whenever I have problems with classmates. My physics teacher had a huge impact on me by helping me with these issues. She helped with my physics as a physics teacher and helped with my relationship with classmates as a homeroom advisor. For most teachers in China, if you cannot get a good grade, they are more likely to say “go to weekend class” instead of asking where you don’t understand. If you fight and cause trouble, they are more likely to say wait for the punishment from school instead of asking why you cause trouble and solving the issue. My physics teacher was really good. She brought my grades up by spending extra time helping with my physics. She also talked to my classmates, explaining to them what type of person I am, and asking them to make friends with me so that I could stop fighting.

In conclusion, explaining things well and listening to students make a good teacher. This is proved by my personal experience. This is very important when our minds and brain are still developing.
