Cite the things that are similar between these two versions of “Salt Peanuts.”
3. Salt Peanuts (by Dizzy Gillespie)
4. Salt Peanuts (by Miles Davis)
Here, you can here two different “takes” on the same tune. The first is the original, recorded by Dizzy Gillespie in 1949. The second was recorded by the Miles Davis Quintetin 1959. As we have learned, Dizzy Gillespie was a prominent player in the style we call be-bop (and “Salt Peanuts” was one of his “signature” pieces) while Miles Davis is more known for his work about a decades afterward. (Miles’s recording of “Salt Peanuts” was with his First Great Quintet.)
In the time between these two recordings, Miles Davis was instrumental (terrible pun not intended) in two styles that were in reaction to be-bop (“Cool” and “Hard-Bop”). We can see from his playing on “Salt Peanuts” that he was a capable player in the older style as well. But, there are differences between these two versions of this classic be-bop tune.
Cite the things that are similar between these two versions of “Salt Peanuts.” Focus part of your attention on the trumpeters (but feel free to include other things as well)
What is different between them? (Examples: timbre, dynamics, use of “space,” melodic range, etc.)
What about the other players? What is different/the same with their interaction(s) with the soloists?
