The Mechanicals are back and in the same woods as everyone else! Bottom and Quince talk about how great the spot is for a rehearsal space. Then the mechanicals discuss the play and how there are parts that won’t work for such a happy occasion. For example, Pyramus shouldn’t kill himself. That will make people sad. Bottom tells Quince he should add a prologue that Bottom can recite reassuring the audience that the swords aren’t real and that Bottom is an actor playing Pyramus and so no real harm will come to him. Quince agrees and says he will write the prologue in a common rhyme scheme. Bottom tells him to add a couple syllables to the lines. Snug and Starveling then say they are worried that the lion will scare people. Bottom agrees. Snug says maybe they should add a prologue regarding the lion being fake too. Bottom comes up with the idea that half Snug’s face should show in his lion costume and he should have lines where he reassures the ladies he is not really a lion. 1-46
Quince then says he has other things to worry about, like the fact that Pyramus and Thisby are supposed to meet under the moon but the play will be inside. They then check a calendar and realize the moon shines the night of the play, so they can just open a window otherwise someone will have to come on stage holding a lantern saying he represents the moon. Then they talk about how they will get the wall in the building and decide to dress someone like a wall and hold his hand in a way that it represents the chink the lovers talk through. 47-76
Puck enters (they don’t see him) and says he will watch what they are doing and perhaps interfere. He mentions that they are close to where Titania is sleeping. They start to rehearse and the actors mess up and say the words wrong or say stage directions in addition to their lines. Bottom exits and when he reenters the stage, he has a donkey’s head. The guys all get scared and run off. Puck plans to cause confusion and get them all lost in the woods. For some reason, Snout and Quince reenter to talk to Bottom and tell him he has a donkey’s head and leave again. 76-119
Bottom thinks they are playing a trick on him and is determined to not be frightened, so he starts singing loudly. This wakes Titania (she has the love potion on her eyes), and she sees Bottom.
She thinks his singing is beautiful and asks him to continue. He does and she says how wonderful he is. He says he doesn’t think he is that great but love and reason don’t always agree, and he knows that sometimes he can make fun. 120-146
She continues to compliment him and he says if he were smart, he’d know how to get out of the woods. She says she doesn’t want him to leave and her attendants will see to his needs and help make him look more handsome. She then calls the fairies by name, and tells them to bring him treats. Bottom asks them to introduce themselves. He makes various comments about their names. Titania then tells them to prepare Bottom for some bedroom time and asks them to make sure they cause him to be silent before bringing him to her bed.146-205
