This is a group discussion board. In this discussion board, you will discuss with your group 1) how the article that you have located is related to the institution of law and diversity, equity, and inclusion (cultural pluralism), and 2) how the article supplies evidence for the ratings that your group will be recording for the institution of law on the Report Card Pilot, and 3) a preliminary rating for the institution. Week 4: Natural vs. Artificial Selection
For full credit: Your post should contain at least 5 sentences. You must thoroughly reply to the posts of at least two peers.
Natural selection is described as “the process by which forms of life having traits that better enable them to adapt to specific environmental pressures, as predators, changes in climate, or competition for food or mates, will tend to survive and reproduce in greater numbers than others of their kind, thus ensuring the perpetuation of those favorable traits in succeeding generations.” (dictionary.com)
Artificial selection, on the other hand is described as “the identification by humans of desirable traits in plants and animals, and the steps taken to enhance and perpetuate those traits in future generations. Artificial selection works the same way as natural selection, except that with natural selection it is nature, not human interference, that makes these decisions.” (nationalgeographic.com)
The underlined part of the definition above made me want to discuss these terms with you. Considering that climate change is a human-induced phenomenon, where do we draw the line on what is natural and what is artificial selection? Are the adaptations occurring due to climate change part of artificial selection, meaning that genes are adapting according to human-induced favorable traits? Or are they still part of natural selection as long as they are occurring in nature and not in a lab?
Podcast Summary II: Natural Selection
This is the second of a series of podcasts you will summarize for a graded assignment (others are also available for extra credit).
This podcastLinks to an external site. encompasses the topic of natural selection, which we cover this week. The summary should be between 300 and 500 words (1-1.5 pages, 1.5 spaced, Times New Roman) and should include the main points you hear in this podcast. Please include:
1) Three key points;
2) Something that is a novelty for you;
3) The short, take-home message;
3) Your personal take on this podcast.
Radiolab summary:
“Six years ago, a new infection began popping up in four different hospitals on three different continents, all around the same time. It wasn’t a bacteria or a virus. It was … a killer fungus. No one knew where it came from, or why. Today, the story of an ancient showdown between fungus and mammals that started when dinosaurs disappeared from the earth. Back then, the battle swung in our favor (spoiler alert!) and we’ve been hanging onto that win ever since. But one scientist suggests that the rise of this new infectious fungus indicates our edge is slipping, degree by increasing degree.”

Create a 3-page analysis of two opposing articles on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide to define the issue.

Create a 3-page analysis of two opposing articles on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide to define the issue.

Students will create a 3-page analysis of two opposing articles on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide to define the issue.
To effectively address an ethical problem, we have to fully understand it. After all, we don’t have much chance of making good choices if we don’t understand the issue. Did you know defining an issue means describing both sides before sharing your point of view about either side? Defining both sides can be tricky because it requires being objective even when you do not agree. Can you do it? Can you define both sides without sharing how you feel about physician assisted suicide and euthanasia? Physician assisted suicide and euthanasia are two highly emotionally charged subjects, which makes this exercise all the more difficult.
