Assignment Overview
Debates surrounding drug policy, use and recovery often center on the question of ow drugs should be regulated outside of the need for rehabilitation. This class introduced a few programs attempting to integrate the two (Oregon and prison reform) but both fell short.
Criminalizing, Decriminalization and Legalization have been discussed at length. This was also addressed in an earlier discussion, but now you know NEITHER work in isolation. This paper goes one step further in that you need to tell us WHY prison alone does not work and WHY a complete drug use free for all does not work. Then we will explore models of recovery to think of solutions.
Outcomes and Objectives
Student Learning Outcomes[Copy and paste your SLO(s) here]
Objectives[Include the relevant objective(s) here for this Unit/ Module/ Chapter/ Assignment/ Content, etc.]
Instructions
In a well-structured essay of 4 paragraphs (intro, criminalization, legalization, summary), explore the pros and cons of each strategy and use what you know about addictiveness to support your argument.
Guidelines
ONE Introduction paragraph: Provide a basic overview of the prevalence of drug use and harm in the US. Provide at least one fact on the costs; economic, personal &/or community to show us how big the problem is.
ONE paragraph on legalization and
ONE paragraph on criminalization
Each paragraph tells one pro and one con of each and why you think the con exists. Your “why” should be based on what we learned in the class based on addiction theory, social issues and/or what has happened with other programs.
YOU MUST Work in at least one concept of addiction theory (biology, psychology, or social) and/or outcomes to explain the pros and cons with each solution. Here are some questions to help you link how addiction works and how these issues complicate the regulation and rehabilitation of the problem.
Biological: How does the high jacking of dopamine make incarceration alone not work and how would the high jacking of dopamine could leave dangerous addicts who lack decision making on the streets.
Psychology: How does trauma and stress relate to criminalization of drug use and how would criminalization hurt mindset and how could criminalization help stress and trauma.
Social: How does knowing that marginalized people are more at risk for use and prosecution impact criminalization? How does the fact that addiction is generational (ie you are more likely to be an addict if you live with one) impact criminalizing and legalizing?
Outcomes: What sources tell us that the two choices work or don’t work? Use material and things you learned from the module about programs that did or did not work.
Need review? LINK to Addiction Theory Module.
ONE summary solution suggestion paragraph with: Provide a short summary of the complex relationship of addiction and regulation (2-3 sentences max). Pick one strategy from above (legalization or criminalization) and provide a solution or parameter to make it a more effective solution.
*Do not just say, “rehabilitation instead” as you (should have) learned that in Oregon, people didn’t go and that 85% of prisoners don’t get it. Will it be mandatory? Where will it occur? Will there be rules on amounts of drugs allowed? Will there be rules for repeat offenders? Does it address the biological, social and psychological reasons?Make sure your solution addresses the reason you picked as to why an option is a con. (ie if you pick biology, make sure your solution helps that, if you picked social structure, make sure your solution does that)
Then offer a simple idea on how this would be funded and what is the needed manpower.
*Do not just say, “taxes”. Tax on what? Import taxes? Training dollars? Budget shifts? Education grants for certain professionals? Just one idea is ok! This is hard, I just want to see you think outside the box.
Summary solution example:
Both criminalizing and legalizing drugs have their pros and cons. I think that a more nuanced regulation of (criminalizing or legalizing) is the better solution with the addition of (idea here that addresses one part of addiction theory ie biological, psychological or social reasons) This would help because (explain).
I think that some of the funding for this could come from (idea) . For manpower, the program would need ( idea).
Grading & Feedback
Here is the generic grading rubric that is true for all discussions Grading Rubric for Discussions.docxDownload Grading Rubric for Discussions.docxHere is a specific rubric:
5 point- Introduction sentence
10 points- ONE paragraph overview and prevalence of drug misuse/addiction.
15 points: ONE paragraph on pros and cons of legalizing with support from addiction theory.
ex: Criminalizing drug use is ineffective because..(use theory here) Criminalizing does help because… (theory here) (5 points for each side, 5 in-text citations references)
15 points- ONE paragraph on pros and cons of criminalizing with support from addiction theory.
ex Legalizing drug use is ineffective because..(use theory here) Legalizing does help because..(theory here)
(5 points for each side, 5 in-text citations references)
15 points summary paragraph with your idea to augment either criminalizing or legalizing.
*see my example above and just substitute in your ideas if you need help!
5 feasible proposal on funding and manpower.

Glynn Young, writer and reviewer, recommends the following steps:
Who: I like to know who the poet is, what (if anything) has been previously published, if they
have a website and how they describe themselves, and, if available, to see a photo. This is
information that helps shape a review, and it’s important for a reader to know. The “who, ” even
if brief, places a personality around the poems under consideration.
What: What kind of poetry is it? What form does it follow (or does it have a form)? What is the
subject of the poems in the collection?
When: Is this the poet’s first collection? A chapbook? Where does it fall in the poet’s writing
career? Does the collection make use of childhood or old-age themes and ideas? Is time an
important factor in the poems?
Where: Does the volume have a geography? Robert Frost has New England, Carl Sandburg had
Chicago, Walt Whitman had the Civil War hospitals of Washington and his home in New York,
and Emily Dickinson had Amherst, Massachusetts. Is geography or a sense of place a strong
element in the collection being reviewed?
Why: What is the poet trying to accomplish? What are the themes and ideas the poet is
attempting to communicate?
How: How does the poet use language? What are the key metaphors (and there are almost
always key metaphors)? What images are employed? What does all of this tell us about what’s
going on in these poems?

Creating A Fact Sheet
For the final assignment for the Community Health Project, you will be creating a fact sheet based on your research from Human Health and Physiology and Identifying Risk Factors and Solutions.
The idea behind creating a fact sheet is to inform the general public about an issue. Specifically, your target audience will be the residents of the community that you identified as being particularly vulnerable to poor health outcomes. You should assume that your audience will have a limited scientific background. You will be writing from the perspective of your medical specialty (but do not write in 1st person – see the example on this page), but your goal is to make the science that you researched understandable to a general audience while including the sources from your background research.
Assignment Requirements
While your final fact sheet will contain graphics, this assignment is just asking you to submit the text and your graph. As you are writing each section of your fact sheet, please use the third person (do not use I/we) and think about considering how the elements fit together to create a fact sheet with good flow — it should proceed logically. Address each of the prompts below:
An introductionIn a brief paragraph, identify the health condition that you are focusing on and explain how the solution could improve health outcomes for your focal community (This information should come from Identifying Risk Factors and Solutions.).
How does this solution address the risk factor that you identified? How would this reduce the prevalence of the health condition?
An overview of the health condition Summarize what residents in your focal community should know about the physiology of the health condition.
How does the risk factor increase someone’s chance of developing the health condition?
Focus on the risk factor that your solution targets.
Be specific and provide details about the physiological connection between the risk factor and the health condition.
What steps can residents take to reduce their risk of developing the health condition?
A bullet point list of key facts, including:The statistics for the risk factors related to the health condition, as relevant to your focal community. (Refer back to Identifying Risk Factors and Solutions if necessary.)
The % of adults in your focal community that exhibits the health condition.
A bar graphCreate a bar graph comparing the prevalence of the health condition in your focal community to three other communities. (Use the data provided in Human Health and Physiology.)
Be sure to properly label the x- and y-axes!
A community solution Restate the solution and how it relates to the health condition.
Briefly discuss the organization, program, or movement you selected as part of Identifying Risk Factors and Solutions. How does it relate to the solution and how could it improve health outcomes for residents? I would suggest going back and reviewing the Social Determinants of Health lesson to help you in writing this section.Los Angeles Play Streets Program
Mobile Recreation Program
City Plants
Los Angeles Neighborhood Land TrustLinks to an external site.
Gangsta Gardening and Hyperlocal Food Production
How could residents support this organization, program, or movement?
References cited
Remember to cite all information sources fully, including in-text citations and a properly formatted reference list at the end, for full credit. Please make sure that your sources are credible and that you properly cite all sources.
You can use any citation style you would like (MLA, APA, etc.). Here is PCC’s guide to APA style.
Required – Incorporating Feedback
What instructor feedback have you received on previous parts of the project, if any?
How have you addressed or incorporated this feedback? Be specific and explain how you can use this feedback to improve your final fact sheet.
Example Fact Sheet
Remember, for this assignment, you are just submitting the text and graph. No graphics are necessary! This example fact sheet is just to provide an example of how the information fits together.

Here is the pdf version of the example fact sheet
Actions
if you would like to see anything in more detail. You can also view the text as a Canvas page.Submission Guidelines
Submit this assignment as a pdf.
Grading
This assignment will be graded as complete/incomplete. The content itself will be graded as it appears in your final fact sheet. The rubric attached to this assignment is to help guide your peer review.
Peer Review
Upon completion of this assignment, you will be assigned two peer reviews to complete. This is an opportunity for you to see what others have been working on and for everyone to receive constructive feedback on their fact sheet before submitting the final version next week. Please review the assignment directions and the rubric first and then give written comments to your peers. Choose at least two of the prompts below to formulate your comments for each of your peers.
What are two things you think they communicated in their fact sheet really well?
What is one place they used a source or the data in their fact sheet that worked really well?
What is one place they might be able to strengthen their fact sheet by making better or different use of a source or the data?
Make one or two general suggestions for how they could strengthen their fact sheet. This could be to add material, reorganize a paragraph or sentence, clarify language, or make any other changes to increase clarity.

Hello, I need help with this assignment. I attached the assignment details and topic proposal.
Here are additional details:
Happy Spring Break! I am writing to provide some additional details about the 2nd writing assignment (outline and data description).
1. The assignment is due on March 13th, and the expected length is 2-3 pages.
2. Basically, this assignment builds upon your assignment 1 and adds new stuff. Specifically, you need:
A clear introduction (1-2 paragraphs) describing your trade issue. You should clearly state your research question (E.g., how does X affect Y?), and then explain why it is interesting/worth studying. Tell us how you plan to study the question, and relate your question with the theories you’ve learned in class. Think of this introduction as the intro paragraphs in your final draft–if you do well this time, you can just use the content for your first draft and final draft!
A draft of your data section: this time, the expectation is higher than in assignment 1. You need to:Tell us the data source(s) you are using, the years of data you plan to use, and the variables you will use.
What is your Y variable? What is your X variable? What control variables (on the right hand side of the regression model) do you plan to use?
Plot your data: You can do the plot however you want (Excel, R, Stata, etc.). For this assignment, we won’t put too much emphasis on the plot. We will, however, run 1 or 2 workshops (after the spring break) on using RStudio to do empirical analysis, and we will have a higher expectation about your plot in assignment 3.
You can plot the relationship between X and Y using your data. Alternatively, you can plot the Y variable (e.g., Mexico’s export value of automobiles to the US) across time. Plotting the data gives us a better understanding of your dataset.
Your regression model: clearly write out your regression equation: Y=b0+b1x1+b2x2+……+error term. Tell us what’s your y, x1, x2 variables. Also tell us how you plan to interpret the results: e.g., what does b1 represent? how are you going to interpret the coefficients?
For this assignment, you don’t need to actually run the regression and produce the results (yet)–although you are welcome to do so if you want. What we really care about is that you have a well-built regression model, and you clearly describe the variables and the coefficients.
You can refer to the lecture slides on January 18th (Intro to Writing Project) for more details. Page 16 to 22 of the slides have the relevant information.
Here is the feedback I got from the topic proposal:
In terms of data sources: you listed several data sources. It’ll be great if you can also tell us which years of data you’d like to use. Also, you mentioned you will use “Restrictions and obstacles on the importation and exportation of cement, such as tariffs and trade barriers” as one of your variables. You can tell us what trade barriers, or what tariffs are you planning to study–be more specific about it.
Requirements: 2-3 pages
