Tourism Impacts on Dubai: Positive & Negative

Introduction

Dubai is the second largest and the most populous emirates of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). Other emirates that make up the U.A.E. are Abu Dhabi, the capital, Ajman, Ras Al-Khaimah, Sharjah, Fujairah and Umm- Al Qaiwain. The United Arab Emirates is located in the Arabian Gulf, southwest Asia. Dubai is located on the banks of the Dubai Creek, covering a total area of approximately 4,200 km2. Currently, the population of Dubai stands at 1.37 million people. Oil, international trade, and tourism are the main economic stays of Dubai contributing approximately 7% of the GDP of the United Arab Emirates.

Main body

Dubai has an arid, subtropical climate with occasional rainfall during falls and winter, with sunny and clear blue skies the most part of the year. Temperature ranges from a low of 10 degrees centigrade to a high of 41 degrees centigrade.

The government of Dubai led by the current ruler His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is committed to turn Dubai in to a tourist hub. There is a much political support in this effort. This has been demonstrated by development of infrastructure like roads network, modern harbor and airports, which has been facilitating the realization of this goal. More commercial and residential houses have been built to accommodate more tourists.

Accessibility of Dubai is easy with direct flights from major cities in Asia, Africa and Europe. Currently, Dubai international airport is ranked among the world top 10 airports with a handling capacity of 16 million passengers per year. With addition of the third terminal, the airport is set to handle 70 million passengers per year.

Tourism in an area or a country has many impacts, both negative and positive on people lives, environment and economy. In Dubai, tourism have its fair share of negative and positive impacts; it is important however to look at various tourist attractions which are found in Dubai, for easy understanding of the resulting impacts.

One of the major tourist attractions in Dubai is the Dubai shopping Festival which is held one per year for a whole month. The festival was started in 1996 and has since been attracting people from allover the world. During the festival, people enjoy reduced shopping prices and prizes, great sporting events and fantastic fireworks. Dubai Summer Surprise is yet another event held between June and August that attract many tourists from across the globe. During the events, tourists enjoy cultural surprises, a taste of local cuisines and food festival held at the shopping malls.

As a center for international fair and major technological events, Dubai World Trade Centre has become another major tourist attraction. The centre hosts the annual Gulf Information Technology Exhibition and other major events that attracts tourist from all over the world. Dubai Air Show is another spectacular show held after every two years. During the show, major carrier and airplane makers exhibit their latest products in the event that attracts major players from across the globe. The Middle East Motor show is also another annual event showcasing the latest technology and future designs of vehicles from all over the world. Dubai Museum, built in 1799, heritage village, diving village are other important spots within Dubai that attract a lot of tourists.

Desert safari and adventures using camels and/or off road trucks is another attraction that brings in tourist from allover the world. To add to the thrill, tourist participates in diving and snookering, motor cross, skydiving and mountaineering. The palm Island is an ongoing project on the coast of Dubai, which will see development of residential, commercial and retails buildings aimed at uplifting Dubai as a premier tourist destination.

Over the past few years, the economy of Dubai has been growing at a steady rate, fueled in part by tourist dollars. This is one positive impact of tourism development in Dubai. Given the linkages between different sectors of economy, the remarkable economic growth of Dubai has also contributed to the growth of tourism. Of all the other emirates in U.A.E, Dubai has received the lion share of promotion as a tourist destination. Most festivals, exhibitions, conferences and trade shows are held in Dubai. Sport tourism has also had a good share in the tourism market with the Dubai International Arabian horse Championship, Dubai world cup, Dubai Tennis Championships and Dubai International Jazz festival.

When in Dubai, tourist contributes to the economy through shopping in the numerous malls that cater for all customers needs. The recent opening of Mall of Emirates has redefined how shopping is done; with over 250 shops, ski centre and cinemas halls. It is important to note here that Dubai is a free port city where goods business is done tax free. The government and the people of Dubai benefit indirectly from the service industry which includes hotels, transportation etc.

Tourist facilities like resorts and hotels are other sources of revenues offering comfort and hospitality. Burj Al Arab all suite hotel stands at 321 feet’s and is recognized as one of the best hotel in the world. The hotel is a major attraction to high end business men visiting Dubai. The government of Dubai has major stakes in most of the real estate, hotels and tourist resorts which act as a source of government revenues.

Tourism is a one source of foreign currency for Dubai, stimulating and accelerating growth of the emirates. Increased foreign currency reserve in the Dubai economy has contributed to stabilizing of United Arab Emirates economy.

25 years ago, Dubai was a desert with just a few sheep, horses and camels. Today, Dubai is a world trade centre thanks to the oil reserves, tourism and trade. Dubai has some of the best network of roads and airports. With the growth of tourism, there have increased employment opportunities for local people and foreigners from allover the world. Hotels, taxis, nightclubs, airport services, real estate management are some of the sector that have been opened up largely by the tourism industries and are providing stable employments to many people.

Construction of infrastructures cost the government of Dubai a lot of money. Money is sourced from other sectors of economy like oil to construct roads and airports Return from such investment may take long to recover and get real benefit.

With all the attractions and the valuable economics contribution that tourist has on Dubai, the fast and uncontrolled growth has numerous negative effects. With the rapid growth comes environmental degradation and loss of cultural and traditional identity. Tourist put a lot of stress on the ecosystem.

With increased number of people visiting Dubai, traffic on the road has increased. The number of people on the streets of Dubai searching for leisure and entertainment on a daily basis is rising at a steady rate. The opening up of Dubai to real estate developers and buyers has also led to increase in the number of people visiting Dubai. Main highways in Dubai are now more congested than before leading to loss of work hours on the road.

With increase in number of tourist visiting Dubai, the demand for local commodities has risen leading to increase in prices of basic commodities. This has lead to increase in the cost of living for the local people. As the demand for building material increases with increased construction of more tourist facilities, the price for the cost of building materials increases. The Local people spending power is limited as they are now competing with foreign investors. Most of the indigenous inhabitant of Dubai have been forced by circumstances to migrate to other places as the cost of land nears tourist dominated area like Dubai coast, have risen and the land market is now dominated by foreigners leading to erosion of economic opportunities for the local people.

Another negative impact of tourism development in Dubai is pollution and distraction to the wildlife. The construction of the Palm Island on the coast of Dubai has negative effects to the marine life. During the construction heavy equipment are used in dredging the sand and blasting of rocks. This has resulted to death of many important sea animals like whales, dolphins and sharks, with a huge number migrating to less disturbed areas. The extensive block paving to create along the coast has destroyed natural habitats for turtles which relies on the shoreline for nesting.

Increased sporting activities like anchoring, sport fishing, scuba diving, yachting and snookering in the sea have resulted in the destruction of the coral reef, mangroves, hinterland forest and lagoons. These activities have many negative effects to the ecosystem like pollution and death of important sea organism.

Noise, littering, sewage release, solid waste, oil and chemicals and noxious gas emissions are some of the pollutions associated with tourism in Dubai. Increased rise in tourist mobility by air, road and rail has direct effect on air and noise pollution. Air transportation accounts for over 50 percent of total air pollution. The continued increase in the number of international tourist visiting Dubai is not making the situation any better. Carbon dioxide emission from tourist transport facilities like tour van, buses and off-road vehicles contribute to local air pollution. This pollution contributes significantly to global warming and photochemical pollution. Noise from cars, off road tourist vehicles, airplanes, and buses are a source of human stress and wildlife distress leading to alteration of natural patterns like mating and feeding.

Waste disposal is a serious problem in Dubai especially in areas with high concentration of tourist. Littering has lead to degradation of physical appearance of scenic beauty and shoreline. Extinction of marine wildlife has been attributed largely due to waste disposal in water bodies. Tourist visiting Dubai generates a lot of waste which they don’t have the capacity to carry along or dispose off properly. In such cases, the waste is left behind in those sites where tourist visit leading to environmental degradation.

Construction of airports, roads, accommodation facilities, restaurants, water supplies and other recreational facilities in Dubai have leads to soil erosion. Currently, over 50% of Dubai labor force is engaged in real estate development to cater for residential and accommodation need of visitors. This has resulted to increase in sand mining which put undue pressure on the land.

Various influences from tourism can bring about change or loss of values and cultural identity especially when local cultures and festival are re-structured to conform to the expectations of tourists. In Dubai, the demands for entertainment and arts have lead to commodification of important cultures leading to loss of a community values and identity.

Due to integration of different people with diverse ethnic, religion, prosperity level, lifestyles and values instances of culture clash are common in Dubai. The level of adjustment by both the visitors and the locals in Dubai is usually resulting to cultural clash. Integration of people at different level of earning is also another source of cultural clash in Dubai. Those who works in tourist hotels tend to compare themselves with the visitors resulting to cultural clash.

The level of crime in Dubai has been very low and manageable requiring just a few unarmed police on the street just to maintain law and order. With increased number of tourist and business men visiting Dubai, security concern has increased. The government is now under obligation to provide security to the big number of people visiting Dubai on a daily basis. This has led to increased pressure on the security force.

Cases of prostitution were unheard of in Dubai and the other six emirates some few years ago. The situation is changing slowly for worse and the number of commercial sex worker targeting tourist is on the rise. Packaged sex tour is growing at a rapid rate and if the situation is not checked, prostitution is likely to bring society decay in Dubai.

Conclusion

Tourism in Dubai is one of the fastest growing sectors of economy. With fast growth come both positive and negative impacts on the economy, people’s lives and the environment. To ensure continued maximum benefits from tourist, authority in Dubai must develop sustainable management strategy that will reduce the negative impacts and increase the positive impacts. This includes the use of ecological resources in development of tourism and at the same time maintaining crucial environmental process that helps to conserve biodiversity. There is also need to respect and conserve the social and cultural authenticity and the heritage of the local communities and ensuring long-term practical economic process that provides income to all parties.

London as a Place for a Tourist Vacation

Introduction

Saying that London is one of the most beautiful cities in the world is saying nothing about it. I have been going to this city since I was two years old and there were some years when I visited it four or five times a year; despite this, I will never stop getting amazed by it every time I get there. London is the best place for me and my Kuwaiti friends to spend a vacation in because this city is full of sights and nice places to visit with its shops and department stores offering goods for any taste; apart from this, a vacation in London can help non-English speakers, such as the Kuwaitis, perfect and sophisticate their English.

Main Body

To begin with, London offers its visitors a number of sights the beauty of which is sometimes impossible to describe. Its parks are absolutely amazing; they are so diversified that one visit to London will not suffice if a person wants to see at least a part of them. London has a number of parks which are absolutely amazing. I can state for sure that none of other cities in the world has so much green and open space. There is at least one park in every part of London; at this, it does not matter “if it’s just a small pool with surrounding trees or a park like the magnificent and slightly wild in appearance Richmond Park” (“London Parks”).

The most prominent, perhaps, is Hyde Park which all the visitors go to play tribute to Princess Diana. The park is 360 acres in size and one can rent a boat to paddle in the lake there. There are also St. James’ Park, Primrose Hill Park, Alexandra Park, Regents Park, Syon Park, and an incalculable number of other parks. Theme and adventure parks are also numerous. A visit to any of them will become the greatest fun day a person could ever have.

Madame Tussauds and the London Dungeon are the most famous adventure parks in London, though the others are no less great. It is impossible to leave London without visiting Westminster Abbey, seeing Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, watching the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and having dinner in Covent Garden (Porter’s English Restaurant would be the best choice) (Moore and Porter 243).

London’s ancient buildings strike the visitors with their mysteriousness and one cannot stop wondering what hides between those old walls and columns created by famous architects and visited by no less famous people. So, visiting London is the best way to spend a vacation because after leaving the hotel one gets into a real fairy-tale where the sights whizz by and the memories about them remain in the mind forever.

Moreover, London is known as a city of shopping this is why doing shopping there is one of the duties each of the visitors is expected to fulfill. Shopping becomes a special entertainment in case the weather is not suitable for sightseeing. I for one adore London weather, though most of the visitors find it rather gloomy. I adore London for its rains for they are a rare occurrence in Kuwait where the weather is sunny hot.

Shopping is the best way to have fun during rainy days in London. The main shopping areas “center around Oxford Street and Regent Street, while Knightsbridge is home to stores stocking even more upmarket goods” (“London Shopping”). Major international and British brands can be found at these shops, but the visitors who look for specialist items will find them in Covent Garden. New Bond Street is for those who search for exclusive shops, while Hatton Garden is the best place to buy jewelry and watches.

Those who are interested in music, especially in rare cuts, will feel like in a dream in Soho where a great number of independent music shops offer the music items of all the possible genres. Therefore, the rainy weather of London is perfect for those who cannot imagine their lives without shopping and who are interested in goods which cannot be found anywhere but in London.

Finally, London is a great place to visit for Kuwaitis in particular because they can meet their nationals there and perfect their English speaking skills. Most of the Kuwaitis speak English well enough, but being in the natural environment will make their English absolutely great. British English is nothing like American English; it is like a song where all the words acquire special meanings. London natives sound so beautiful that all the visitors, regardless of their native language, get British accent because it is impossible not to wish resembling this mysterious language. London is full of people of different nationalities; the Kuwaitis are also numerous there this is why my friends will find London even more attractive and friendly.

Though the population of London is extremely diverse, most of people speak namely English there. This is the best place to improve spoken English because nothing except the communication with a native speaker can make your language richer. The communicative skills get improved after spending several days in London and the excitement, which speaking to the natives (who are, by the way, unbelievably sociable and polite) brings, stays with the visitors for a long time.

What is even more important is that learning English in such a way is entertaining rather than difficult or boring like some of the classes may be. Natural environment allows imitating not only language, accent, and even slang of the native people, but even some of their gestures and facial expressions. This makes the process of learning entertaining and favors the acquisition of knowledge. Thus, a vacation in London is especially useful for the Kuwaitis because English speaking environment can help them make their English even better.

Conclusion

In conclusion, London is indeed the best place for a vacation, especially for people whose native language is not English, such as the Kuwaitis. Ordinary, theme, and amusement parks of London will bring joy to all the visitors; they strike with their beauty and variety offering a number of ways to have fun. Shopping in London will satisfy the needs of even the most exigent shoppers. London shops and department stores not only ensure the visitors with an access to a wide range of goods, but open their doors for the buyers who look for something exclusive and provocatively expensive.

Lastly, a visit to London is extremely useful for the non-English speakers who can improve their English speaking skills, perfect their English, and adopt the beautiful accent of the true English language. I really doubt that there is at least one person who will find a vacation in London boring because it is the best place to have fun and to learn simultaneously.

Travelling Alone or in a Group Essay

Which option is better: traveling by yourself or with friends? This essay answers the question! It focuses on the benefits and drawbacks of solo travel.

Introduction

Different people have different opinions regarding their travel arrangements. Whereas there are individuals who prefer to travel alone, on the other hand, others are more comfortable travelling in a group. Regardless of the option arrived at there are various advantages and disadvantages associated with either of the two options.

There is need therefore to explore whether it is better to travel alone or with a tour group. The essay shall endeavor to compare and contrast travelling alone with travelling in a group and uncover the benefits and drawbacks associated with both of these two forms of travelling.

Travelling Alone or in a Group: Pros & Cons

Traveling in a group allows one to meet new friends and exchange experiences. This helps to add fun to travelling because of the many new ideas that the individual members of the group comes with. In addition, diversity in terms of the experiences of the travelers enables one to appreciate their unique cultural heritage.

On the other hand, travelling in a group denies one the chance of being alone because you are always surrounded by other people. As such, one cannot avoid annoying travelers and you have to learn how to deal with them. In contrast, traveling alone gives one the freedom to explore new experiences without restrictions. As such, can do what pleases him/her without fear that others will criticize him/her.

Travelling in a group also limits one’s chances of meeting new people because it is far much easier to approach an individual as opposed to a group. Travelling alone enables one to become flexible in terms of for example how you spend your day, or what you eat. However, there is the danger of boredom and you have no one to share your experiences with.

Travelling in a group is also beneficial in that it allows you to lower your cost of travelling. This is because there is the possibility of sharing such facilities as the guest room, splitting food and drinks bills, and travelling costs as well. For example, it is much cheaper for a group of 5 travelers to split the traveling cost of hiring a cab, as opposed o a single traveler who would be expected to pay a similar amount for the same distance.

On the other hand, travelling in a group could result in an issue of conflict when it comes to the issue of offsetting bills. For example, some members of the group may decline to pay the stipulated amount of money because in their opinion, they have not incurred the costs that they are expected to foot. In addition, travelling in a group also denies one the flexibility of choosing for example where to stay or what to eat because you have to reach a compromise with the rest of the group.

Travelling in a group therefore puts one in danger of falling prey to a “herd” mentality whereby one ends up agreeing with the wishes of the majority as opposed to saying exactly what you want. On the other hand, travelling alone gives one the needed freedom to choose what he/she wants.

Moreover, traveling in a group allows one to enhance his/her communication and personal relations. Consequently, one gets to learn how best to get along with others, and this ensures that throughout the trip, you are never lost for company. In contrast, there are individuals who do not generally get along well with others and as such, they prefer to remain alone. They are therefore better off traveling alone to avoid straining their communication and personal relations.

Conclusion

Whether one is traveling alone or in a group, there are various advantages and disadvantages associated with each of the two travel arrangements. Regardless of the choice that an individual traveler makes, one should always ensure that they settle on the option that will result in the most fulfilling experience.

Essay on Saudi Arabia, Tourism, Attractions, and Development

Abstract

Saudi Arabia is full of rich natural and historical spectacles. It has attracted Muslim pilgrims for centuries from all over the world. Its diverse natural environment and affluent cultural heritage are major attractions for both domestic and international tourists. The paper describes tourism in Saudi Arabia and highlights tourist points in the country.

Tourism in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a land of abundant natural and historical spectacles. It has been a travel destination for Muslim pilgrims for centuries from all over the world. In Saudi Arabia, tourism was associated only with religious travelling until a few years ago. However, the trend has changed in recent years, and now leisure tourism has also become an important area of development for the Saudi government (About Saudi Arabia, 2015).

With the formation of the Supreme Commission for Tourism in April 2000, now known as the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquity (SCTA), greater emphasis is being laid on the development of tourism, preservation of the historical sites, and conservation of the traditional crafts in the country. Saudi Arabia has remained the centre of most religious pilgrimages for centuries. But now it has started focusing on the leisure tourism sector too. Domestic tourism has also been growing in the region in recent years (Vincent, 2008)

Saudi Arabia has multiple products to offer to tourists. The untouched serenity of the Red Sea Coast offers an ideal array of holiday destinations, including different cultural and natural attractions. In the North, it has the Nabataean city of Madain Saleh and in the south, the tranquil and unspoilt Farasan Islands. It has several important cultural heritage sites; however, only one of them is listed on the World Heritage list of UNESCO.

There is a lack of adequate infrastructure for leisure tourism in Saudi Arabia, despite its significance as a great tourist destination.

“The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) is well aware of the region’s potential for development, and in 2008 the government body signed a SR 2.08m ($555,360) contract with an international consultancy firm to explore possible options” (The Report: Saudi Arabia, 2009, p.210).

Places of tourist significance in Saudi Arabia

The major tourist attractions in Saudi Arabia are the capital city of Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Taif, Makkah, and Madinah and Asir, etc. There are many historical, religious, and leisure destinations that attract visitors to Saudi Arabia.

Historical Sites

Al Diriya: It is an evocative historical site situated on the outskirts of Riyadh. The town was the capital of the first Saudi dynasty and also the original home of the Saudi royal family (Places of interest in Saudi Arabia, 2015).

Masmak Fortress: A major historical monument existing from 1865 in Riyadh that comprises of a gallery of photos from 1912 onwards along with weapon display and audio-visual demonstrations of the unpredictable history of the building (Places of interest in Saudi Arabia, 2015).

Mada’in Saleh: This historic site has its archaeological importance for being in existence from the pre-Islamic period. The ancient mud-brick town of Old Al Ula and stone-carved tombs of Madain Saleh are archaeologically significant (Places of interest in Saudi Arabia, 2015).

Jubba: Situated in the north of the country, this town is a world-famous archaeological site that offers a marvellous view of the 39 sq. km rock carvings present therefrom 5,500 BC (Places of interest in Saudi Arabia, 2015).

Najran: It is the historic centre of trade in Saudi Arabia. In particular, the ruins of a very old commercial center belonging to the period from 500 BC to the 10th century attract the visitors.

Hail: Hail has a historical significance for being the relaxing point for people going to Makkah and Madinah through the famous route of Darb Zubaydah (About Saudi Arabia, 2015).

Museums

The National Museum is situated in the capital city of Riyadh and is one of the top museums of the Middle East (Places of interest in Saudi Arabia, 2015).

Al Tayibat City Museum, situated in the historic city of Jeddah, has 300 rooms that exhibit the private collection of ancient coins and Islamic ceramic (Places of interest in Saudi Arabia, 2015). Besides these, the other significant museums to visit in Saudi Arabia are the Museum of Buraidah, Dammam Historical Museum, and The National Heritage and History museum in Riyadh.

Religious tourism

In Saudi Arabia, tourism is associated mainly with religious pilgrimages. Every year, millions of Muslim pilgrims come to the holy city of Makkah to perform Hajj. It is the birthplace of Prophet Mohammad,

“The Hajj is the largest voluntary mass movement and the largest concentration of people for any event in the world and is enough to make Saudi Arabia especially significant in the study of travel and tourism” (Harrison, 2001, p.155).

However, it is a question of debate whether Hajj can be considered as a form of tourism or not. In Europe, pilgrimage to the sacred locations such as Lourdes and Fatima is considered as a tourist activity, but Saudi authorities do not associate tourism with religious activities like the Hajj. They believe that the pleasure-seeking behavior of the Western tourists differs from the behaviour of the pilgrims (Harrison, 2001).

Madinah is the other religious place in Saudi Arabia that is visited quite frequently by the visitors. Its religious significance is attached with people’s love and respect for Prophet Muhammad who spent the last years of life here. Only Muslim visitors are allowed to visit Makkah and Madinah (About Saudi Arabia, 2015).

Leisure tourism

Normally, Saudis visit nearby places for recreational purposes; however, spending holidays by the seaside has become an increasing demand among the well-to-do Saudis in the recent years. Towns like Abha are most visited by Saudis due to their pleasant climate during summers. The Gulf coast is dense with hotels and villas while many recreation facilities are being at towns like Al Qunfadah on the Red Sea (Vincent, 2008).

The Red Sea coastline is 1800 kilometres long and offers world class scuba diving waters. Visitors get an opportunity to explore various sites in the region such as Kingdom’s second city Jeddah, the ancient Islamic city of Al Ula and the most fertile city of the country, Asir. Major attractions in Asir are the Asir National Park and the hanging village, Habalah (The Report: Saudi Arabia, 2009).

“The mountain resort city of Taif is located 5,600 ft above sea level in the southwest region of Saudi Arabia. Its pleasant climate, lush parks, sunny skies and exotic wildlife have lone drawn Saudi families to this resort town each summer” (About Saudi Arabia, 2015, para 2).

Tourism development in Saudi Arabia

The diverse natural environment and rich cultural heritage is a major attraction for domestic and international tourists both. Besides this, the country has a religious significance too, for being home to the renowned Holy Mosques that pull huge number of Muslims from around the world to the country every year. In spite of having abundant tourist products of relevance, suitability and value, these are not exploited to the fullest due to lack of responsible tourism planning (Scott & Jafari, 2010).

Tourism has an important role to play in the economy of a country. Besides influencing the economy directly, it has many indirect and induced impacts of significance for the countries (Turner, 2014).

Saudi Arabia includes expansion in the tourism facilities and services in the Kingdom under the supervision of the Tourism Higher Authority. The government plans to expand the tourism industry and employ and train more and more Saudis in this area. It is also interested in developing national tourism and has assured its full cooperation to various partners including public and private segments. The Kingdom is facilitating an environment congenial for tourist investments (Tourism, 2015).

The increased amount of free leisure time and huge disposable income has become a recent trend in Saudi Arabia leading to increased domestic and international tourism. Saudis spend more on the international tourism rather than the domestic tourism. This causes substantial drain to the economy. Therefore, Saudi government needs to focus more on increasing domestic tourism in the country. Saudis prefer to go abroad for holidays due to better recreational opportunities and facilities.

However, there has been an improvement in the tourism facilities within Saudi Arabia in past few years, but these are not sufficient to satisfy the wealthier tourists. The insufficiency of tourists’ facilities as per the demands is largely because of the diversification of tourism facilities between the government and the private companies (Al-Thagafy, 1991 as cited in Perdue et al, 2004).

Measures taken by the Saudi government

According to the records of the World Bank, approximately 14.3 m people came to Saudi Arabia in 2012.

“But almost all come as pilgrims to Mecca or on business. Expos, conferences and flashy exhibitions are even more common. But these visitors tend to stay only a few days, spend little and are concentrated in a few, already-wealthy parts of the country” (Can the Kingdom attract more visitors, 2014, para 3).

Tourism development in Saudi Arabia is mainly based upon the Islamic principles that consider travel and tourism essential for different policies such as economic, social, political or legal within the nation. Islam considers tourism as a part of life and hence, Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) approves its development within the framework of Islamic values in the country. Consumption of alcohol, gambling and prostitution are strictly prohibited.

Men and women both are expected to be dressed in non-revealing clothes. It is also taken into consideration that the outside tourists are treated with benevolence and thoughtfulness. Leisure tourism is a new emerging concept in Saudi Arabia. Tourism comes in the category of the largest industries ranking third after energy and manufacturing sectors and offers a new market area for expansion.

Abdulaziz (1997) revealed that the absence of a formal agency for tourism before 1999 led to the state of disorder and disorganisation in tourism. Lack of unity among the different segments of tourism, inappropriate leadership and dearth of strategic direction led to the chaotic planning and trivial development in the field of tourism in Saudi Arabia. With the establishment of the SATC planned and organized development within the framework of Islamic rules is expected. The National Tourism Plan is set for the developing and promoting tourism industry of the nation. The expenditure pattern of the Saudis on holiday trips indicates better prospects for the country’s tourism industry.

Besides domestic tourism, events and conference organised in the country and huge expatriate community in the Kingdom also facilitate tourism across the country (Scott & Jafari, 2010).

The government has planned three major projects for the development of the west coast. However, the success of these projects depends largely on the sustained improvement of products and services. Cultural tourism is developing in the region as the locals are enthusiastic and thrilled to promote their heritage by organising fairs and festivals (The Report: Saudi Arabia, 2009).

The infrastructure within the country in terms of ports and airports is good. The same applies to the roads also.

“The government is increasing its efforts to boost tourism revenues by means of touristic investments and a relaxation of visa requirements. A major breakthrough has been to allow Hajj pilgrims to visit the country at any time during the year, rather than restrict visitation to certain periods” (Knowles et al, 2004, p.306).

Seeing government’s promotional strategies, the international brands in hospitality business are also taking interest in the tourism market of Saudi Arabia. A senior consultant associated with TRI Hospitality Consulting, Rashid Aboobacker says that, “The high level of liquidity and the excellent return potential are also attracting strong private sector interest in tourism investment in the country now” (Sahoo, 2014, para 22).

Conclusion

Saudi Arabia has a religious significance for being home to the renowned Holy Mosques. Further, the diverse natural environment and rich cultural heritage is a major attraction for domestic and international tourists both. The government is committed to increase tourism facilities and services in the Kingdom and employ greater number of local youths in this field. It is also interested in developing national tourism and has assured its full cooperation to various public and private partners, thus, facilitating an environment congenial for tourist investments in the Kingdom.

Maasai Mara Trip and Preparations

If I was to go anywhere in the world, I would choose to go to the Maasai Mara. It is a Game Reserve in Africa located in the country of Kenya. This would definitely have to be my choice because of the love I have for nature, in particular wildlife. I would opt to go to the Maasai Mara because of its fame all over the world. Most of my friends who have been there telling me that it is not a place to miss once you make a trip to Africa.

They tell me that once you visit the Maasai Mara, you will always want to go back a second time and a third time. As I watched a film that featured the Maasai Mara, the aforementioned park found in Africa, I got interested in visiting the place at one time in my life. The migration of thousands of wildebeests across the river Mara, which is the seventh wonder of the world, is also another captivating moment in the game reserve.

My trip to the Maasai Mara would definitely require adequate preparation. Apart from getting a plane ticket, I would also be expected to find out the available lodges within or outside the game reserve. Once I have made the reservations, I would now be ready for the next step, which would be shopping for the trip. My shopping list will be long and adequate such that I am inconvenienced at any point on the trip.

Most countries in Africa, including Kenya, lie on the savanna grassland, thus having a hot and humid climate during most times of the year. This would therefore require me to shop for lightweight attires like pairs of shorts and sleeveless tops. A hat would be desirable because of the scorching sun in the day. A cold water bottle will also of great importance to quench my thirst as I travel through the reserve.

I am usually not a fan of experimenting with foods from different cultural groups and tend to only consume what I am conversant with. This makes me carry canned foods that I have been used to every time I go to foreign places and this trip would not be exceptional. I would also make sure that my digital camera is in good condition to carry it with me since I would definitely have to take photographs that I will show and brag to my friends. My iPod would not be left behind since I may have to listen to some music especially at night as I relax after spending the day moving round the park.

As I make my trip to the Maasai Mara I would expect to see a number of features and wildlife. I am told that the reserve is a home for the big five animals of the world that is the lion, elephant, black rhino, hippo and the wild beasts. Apart from these the park has large herds of giraffes, leopards, crocodiles in the river Mara and a big number of beautiful birds like storks and eagles. This is indeed an animal kingdom. I would expect to see the nice topography that is characteristic of the mara. This will start with a view of the Ngama hills, the Oloololo escarpment and then a view of Mount Kilimanjaro on the border of Kenya and Tanzania. I am sure I will have a fascinating trip.

Introduction of Why People Travel Essay

Travelling is an important part of the life. There are several reasons for it. The first cause concerns the necessity to change the environment. It motivates people, brings them new experiences and desire to keep moving and living. According to Stellin (2006), most people do not have time for journeys. Usually, everyone has a lot of plans for days off, which include visiting relatives, going to the weddings, birthdays, and parties.

All these activities include travelling as well, but they can become rather frustrating if one does not have enough time for oneself. The author differentiates trip from vacation, stating that the first deals with spending time with family while the latter means having a holiday in exotic places.

Reasons for Travel

Some people do not need to travel far because they can have a rest at home. A staycation is a term for this phenomenon. It may include the changing of the everyday schedule, often going for picnics, or doing exercises for pleasure (Stephenson, Dummet, & Hughes, 2012). In other words, a staycation is everything interesting one can conduct without leaving a house. Consequently, two ways of having a vacation can fulfil the necessity to change the everyday routine.

The second reason is the desire to know the way other societies live. It is an exciting method to have a good rest and become familiar with different cultures. A wish to experience new emotions in foreign countries motivates individuals to travel. They visit galleries, museums, observe the lifestyle and traditions, and participate in many activities (Dale, 2005). Generally speaking, they conduct such activities that are impossible in their society.

Travellers become a part of a dissimilar country for a particular period. New information enhances the broad-mindedness and erases cultural barriers. The absorption into the foreign culture is also a kind of escape from usual life and problems. Everything unpleasant seems so far away among new people.

The next reason for travelling deals with educational purposes. There is no doubt that when one visits the new place, he or she will perceive particular knowledge. Learning for fun is the best way to improve the general state of mind and be in a good mood. The obtaining of a skill of how to cook foreign food makes the human brain work more actively. As a result, the level of serotonin (the hormone of happiness) rises and makes one a happier person (Eleven Reasons Why Travel Makes You a Happier Person, 2015).

Travelling and education are good companions that make people joyful. The acquisition of the foreign language in the country where it is a native language is the paramount way of the effective studying. Those, who study languages, have no other choice rather than practice it and try to understand everyone around. A learner copies peculiar features of pronunciation and studies the most useful vocabulary. Thus, travelling is a convenient method to acquire necessary knowledge and skills.

The fourth reason for travelling refers to the physical and mental need to relax. This cause is typical for those who have been working hard during the whole year. Such tourists give preference to laying in the sun and swimming in the sea. Another variant is to devote all time to enjoying spa procedures and feeling the relaxation (Dale, 2005).

Frequent stresses usually accompany hard physical work. The best holiday for them is to leave all businesses behind, turn the phone off, and visit some exotic country with beautiful sandy beach. Busy people always have something to do and to think over. Such a change of environment is helpful for those who are sick and tired of constant work and problems.

People often travel to meet somebody or to have a good time with friends. A vacation can be the best decision for a journey with husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Usually, an everyday routine slowly kills the relationships and makes individuals tired of each other. That is why some couples decide to travel to a foreign country and enjoy the time rather than quarrel about trivial things (Agarwal, 2015).

Conclusion: Benefits of Travelin

A vacation presupposes going sightseeing, doing shopping, trying the national cuisine, and exploring the new location. Other tourists travel to make acquaintances. Some individuals are communicative and need to make friends and meet interesting people. They can find new contacts everywhere: on the bus, in the street, or on the beach. One may conclude that people travel to forget their problems, receive new impressions and recover from the everyday routine and hard work.

Camping Essay: Advantages and Disadvantages

Have to write a paper about the disadvantages and the benefits of camping? Essay examples are a good place to start your research. Read one of them below.

Introduction

Camping is an outdoor activity that involves spending time in nature, exploring its different aspects, and doing a wide variety of activities. Individuals spend time in various natural settings and enjoy themselves by taking part in physical activities. The history of camping can be traced back to the early years of the 20th century (Daniel, 2015). It began with travelers and explorers. Camping has numerous variations that include adventure camping, backpacking, canoe camping, work camping, social camping, bicycle camping, survivalist camping, and dry camping (Daniel, 2015). These variations are distinguished by the type of activities involved. The activities are designed to suit the theme or purpose of camping. On the other hand, individuals can choose among many options available for shelter facilities such as tents, caravans, primitive structures, and open air. In contemporary society, camping takes place in natural settings such as public parks, forests, national parks, and campgrounds.

Why people love camping

Many people love camping because of the excitement, entertainment, and opportunities for growth it presents. Others love it because of the exhilaration derived from sleeping outdoors, watching the sky at night, making campfires, and enjoying the cool breeze that is associated with natural settings. Camping involves several activities that include hiking, hunting, fishing, canoeing, riding bicycles, fishing, and climbing. Camping appeals to many people because of the variety it provides with regard to the activities that they can do. In many cultures, camping is a cultural concept that brings people together and strengthens their relationships by taking part in certain activities that encourage bonding.

The freedom that people enjoy during camps is another reason for its popularity (Daniel, 2015). For example, many people unplug technology in order to enjoy quality time with their family members and friends. On the other hand, there are very few restrictions, and people are free to do what they want to have fun. In today’s society, technology has separated people from nature and led to the loss of human interaction on a personal level. Therefore, camping gives people an opportunity to get away from the technological distractions of the modern world and spend time in quiet environments that are rejuvenating.

Benefits of camping

Socialization is one of the most important benefits of camping (The Many Benefits of a Camping Trip, 2012). As mentioned earlier, technological advancements have changed human communication significantly because most of it is done virtually. Camping gives people an opportunity to socialize and interact one-on-one without technological distractions (Holmes, 2015). This socialization strengthens friendships and family ties. For example, children get adequate time to spend with their parents, have fun, and talk about different issues. Many working parents get little time to spend with their children because of the high demands of life in modern society. They have many responsibilities and little time. Camping is an effective way for families to spend time together and reconnect.

Camping has several health benefits that include physical exercise, absorption of Vitamin D from sunlight, relaxation, reduced blood pressure, and reduction of mental stress (Holmes, 2015). Camping activities take place in open places that receive ample sunlight. Spending time outdoors allows people to absorb Vitamin D from sunlight to supplement the one that is obtained from food. Vitamin D is an important component of healthy living that reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, lowers levels of blood pressure, and aids in eradicating depression.

Activities such as swimming, cycling, and climbing engage the muscles and relax the body (Tawrell, 2007). This enhances the quality of sleep, strengthens the immune system, and lowers mental stress. In addition, the fresh air and little noise create a healthy environment. Engaging in physical activity is recommended by medical practitioners because it enhances people’s health outcomes. For example, it improves blood and body fluids circulation, strengthens muscles, and aids in control (The Many Benefits of a Camping Trip, 2012). The peace, quiet, and serenity found in natural settings lowers stress and rejuvenate the body.

Camping is a financial advantage because it provides people with an opportunity to take vacations without spending a lot of money. Camping is a cheap and affordable alternative to traditional holidays because the cost of hotels is higher than the cost of campsites. On the other hand, individuals prepare their own meals and, as a result, save money. Activities such as swimming, reading, hiking, and cycling save people a lot of money because they do not involve the financial costs associated with vacations (The Many Benefits of a Camping Trip, 2012). People who go to national parks and public parks set up their tents anywhere and do not incur any charges. In commercial camping grounds, campers only pay a small fee that is less than the cost of staying in a hotel.

Disadvantages of camping

Camping has several benefits that have made it its favorite pastime activity among many people. However, it has some disadvantages too. One of the disadvantages is the issue of changes in weather patterns. In many natural settings, it gets very cold at night, and that can present health hazards that could predispose people to colds and flu. Surviving cold nights and hot days during winter and summer can be very challenging (Tawrell, 2007). On the other hand, summers are very hot, and prolonged periods of exposure to direct sunlight can have adverse health effects.

Mosquitoes and other insects can cause diseases if campers fail to use equipment to keep the insects away. Mosquito repellents and sprays can be used to keep insects away. Lack of amenities such as good food and electricity can be difficult for some people. Another disadvantage is the lack of security in certain areas. Camping takes place outdoors, where there are many threats to people’s security (Daniel, 2015). For instance, camping in national parks and forests is dangerous because of the risk f attacks by wild animals. Locations such as commercial camping sites provide adequate security for campers. However, it is not enough because security breaches can originate from campers with malicious intentions.

One of the activities that take place during camping is socialization. There is little time available for people to spend alone. This can be very challenging for people who like to spend time alone reading, writing, listening to music, or meditating. The social nature of camping activities eliminates the possibility of getting time to spend alone and do personal things (Daniel, 2015). Some people need adequate time to be alone in order to rewind and rejuvenate. Otherwise, too much socialization drains their energy, makes them irritable, and lowers their productivity and performance. Camping is not a very effective way of vacationing for people who like to spend time alone.

Preparations for camping are tedious and long because of the need to take time and pack everything that is needed. Forgetting certain things can have an adverse effect on the quality of camping experiences. People usually prepare their own food during camps and share certain facilities. There can be a problem with the food quality because campers usually prepare meals that do not take much time. Therefore, food variety is limited to a few types. This is contrary to the wide variety that is available in hotels and restaurants. Sharing facilities such as bathrooms can be difficult for people who are self-conscious about their physical appearance (Daniel, 2015). Camping is fun and a cost-effective way of taking a vacation. However, it is inappropriate for people who like to spend time alone or are conscious about their physical appearances.

Conclusion

Camping is a favorite pastime activity among many people because it is cost-effective and provides an opportunity to enjoy nature and reconnect with family and friends. It incorporates a wide range of activities, such as swimming, hiking, running, fishing, canoeing, and cycling. Its advantages include socializing, participation in physical activity, relaxation, reduction of mental stress, and absorption of Vitamin D. On the other hand, it is cost-effective and is an affordable alternative to traditional vacationing. Its disadvantages include a lack of security in certain areas, too much socializing, and a lack of privacy. The social nature of camping activities denies people the opportunity to spend time alone. This can be difficult, especially for introverts. Sharing facilities such as bathrooms are difficult for people who are conscious about their physical appearance due to lack of privacy. Camping is a good pastime activity that provides people with a cost-effective means of having fun and reconnecting with family and friends.

Traveling, Its Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

This essay about travelling abroad explores all the advantages and disadvantages of this activity.

Introduction

Traveling refers to movement from one geographical location to another, either for recreation or work. The majority of the people who love traveling do it when they are young because of the availability of adequate time and lack of pressing responsibilities such as work and family (Hasbrouck, 2011). Traveling is an important pastime activity that is fun, and that exposes people to other countries, cultures, and societies. Travelers learn a lot because traveling necessitates changes in lifestyle and ways of communication. Moreover, travelers learn new languages, interact with people from other races and ethnicities, and explore new geographical locations (Mitchell, 2006). Individuals who travel regularly possess adventurous spirits that yearn for new experiences to learn new things. Despite having numerous benefits, traveling has disadvantages too. It is costly, exposes individuals to the risk of contracting diseases, and causes excessive fatigue.

Advantages of Traveling

Traveling offers people an opportunity to visit interesting places, learn new things, and meet new people (5 Benefits of Travelling, 2013). It is one of the best ways to interact with people from other races, cultures, and ethnicities. Travelers explore the various beliefs and traditions that guide other people’s lives and learn how interconnected humanity is (Mitchell, 2006). For example, there are very many cultures in the world that have preserved their traditional beliefs, customs, and practices. Visiting countries such as Kenya, Mexico, China, and India is an occasion to experience such unique cultures. On the other hand, meeting new people who speak different languages and who live differently is exciting and educational. Travelers also visit interesting places that have great cultural and historical value (5 Benefits of Travelling, 2013). For example, the Eiffel Tower in France, Machu Picchu in Peru, and the Pyramids in Egypt possess great historical and cultural value. Learning about their histories can help travelers to comprehend the cultures, traditions, and customs of different tribes and societies, as well as their dynamics.

Another advantage of traveling is the chance to learn, relax, and widen one’s scope of knowledge (Mitchell, 2006). In certain cases, one of the requirements of traveling abroad is learning the language that is used in the country that one intends to visit. English is an international language. However, it is not spoken in all countries. Therefore, it would be necessary to learn new languages in order to enhance effective communication and interaction with people who speak indigenous languages (Thumb, n.d). There are numerous historical sites to visit around the world, and visiting them teaches furnishes knowledge about their historical significance to various countries and cultures (Marks, n.d). For instance, people who travel to Egypt learn a lot about the pyramids as well as when and why they were built. Exploring the cultures practiced by different communities increases appreciation for human diversity (Mercer, n.d).

Traveling allows people to improve their communication skills and create networks that can be beneficial in their lives (Mercer, n.d). Interacting with people who speak different languages and who have different cultures is challenging. However, it is important for the improvement of communication skills. Multicultural interaction is an important skill in contemporary society, especially due to globalization and technological advancements (Mitchell, 2006). Learning to interact with different cultures inculcates strong communication and social skills that are beneficial in personal and professional life (Marks, n.d). On the other hand, it helps to create networks that can be used in different areas of life. For example, travelers can create business, social, political, and religious networks that can help them to improve their lives, communities, and society at large. The international labor market is open for exploration to everyone around the world. Therefore, possessing strong networks and multicultural communication skills is beneficial and necessary.

Traveling exposes people to different living styles. As a result, it inculcates the value of compassion and changes people’s perspectives regarding life (Hasbrouck, 2011). For instance, travelers from developed countries who travel to developing countries get an opportunity to see the effects of poverty, ignorance, and diseases on communities. This makes them grateful for their lives. Also, it enhances the development of compassion and empathy toward the needy and the suffering. Traveling exposes people to new cultures, societies, people, and lifestyles (Mitchell, 2006). This exposure changes people’s perspectives, attitudes, and opinions. They develop new ways of looking at the world, and it also gives their lives meaning.

Disadvantages of Traveling

One of the major disadvantages of traveling is the costs involved. Traveling is expensive and involves the use of money that many people cannot afford (Thumb, n.d). For example, traveling to foreign countries by plane is costly, and people incur numerous expenses that can have severe financial consequences. Many people only travel locally because they cannot afford to travel internationally. Traveling includes other expenses such as food, entertainment, and accommodation (Thumb, n.d). Both local and international travel offer opportunities for exposure to new people, places, and cultures. However, the pricey nature of trips and vacations prevents many people from indulging and enjoying the many thrills they offer.

Another disadvantage of traveling is the risk of exposure to diseases and deadly illnesses. In the past few years, outbreaks of deadly diseases such as Ebola and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) have been reported in several countries. These diseases put the lives of travelers at risk because they can cause death within a very short time once contracted. In many countries, governments impose travel bans on regions that have been flagged for disease outbreaks. A disease outbreak can lead to the quarantine of affected individuals until the disease is contained. Quarantine causes inconveniences and delays that can interfere with the exhilaration of taking a trip.

Traveling requires a lot of time and planning, which can cause great stress and fatigue (Hasbrouck, 2011). Preparing for a trip is time-consuming because of the need to book accommodation, arrange for transport, and make all the necessary inquiries. On the other hand, trips usually involve pre-arranged plans that eliminate flexibility and the freedom to engage in other unrelated activities. Following strict schedules creates rigidity that eliminates the fun that is involved in traveling.

How to Choose a Trip

Choosing a trip is primarily based on the purpose of travel. People usually travel for reasons that include recreation, tourism, migration, work, religious pilgrimages, business, trade, and volunteer work, among others. Others travel to relax, discover new things, explore, and get acquainted with new cultures (Hasbrouck, 2011). If an individual is traveling to relax or for recreation, they may choose to visit historical sites and beaches. On the other hand, people who travel to learn and explore new places may choose to visit countries where communities that have preserved their traditions are found.

For adventure, they may choose to travel to countries with mountains and forests that can provide fun and enjoyable experiences. Those who travel for migration reasons choose countries that provide the opportunities they are looking for. The steps to choose a trip include the establishment of a purpose for traveling, research regarding countries and regions that can fulfill that purpose, and determination of all the requirements for traveling to that location, such as vaccination and learning a new language or skill. There are various types of trips available that serve the aforementioned purposes. The two most important aspects of taking a trip are determining the purpose of traveling and selecting the most appropriate travel option.

Conclusion

People travel for many reasons, including relaxation, recreation, work, business, adventure, migration, and exploration. Taking trips is beneficial because it offers an opportunity to learn, interact with new cultures, learn new languages, improve communication skills, gain new insights and perspectives regarding life and the world, and meet new and interesting people. In contemporary society, traveling has been made easier by globalization and technological advancements. Despite its benefits, traveling has disadvantages too. It is expensive, time-consuming, causes fatigue, and exposes people to risks of diseases. It is important for travelers to determine the purpose of their trips in order to enable them to choose the most appropriate travel plan or program. It is also important to make all the necessary inquiries and arrangements before traveling to avoid getting stuck in new places. For example, it could be necessary for a traveler to learn the basics of communication or language when traveling to certain areas of the world where indigenous languages are used. This is necessary for the enhancement of communication and interaction.

The Importance of Holidays for the British People

The Choice of Research Topic

Increased income result in increased living standards. As a result, tourism gains popularity among the citizens of the United Kingdom.

Statistics:

  • The amount of money British people spent on holidays grew by 6.3 % between 2012 and 2013.
  • The amount of time British residents spent abroad increased by 3.5 % (Travel Trends, 2013 par. 10).
  • In 2014-2015, 20 % of the citizens project larger investments into their own holidays (Caution remains in 2014 but Brits expect to spend more on holidays in 2015 par. 1).

The presented research reveals and discusses the value of holidays for the British people.

Methodology

  • Reason: to determine the importance of holidays for British people, to find out their most preferred destination.
  • Data collection method: questionnaire.

13 questions targeting:

  • Holiday experiences;
  • Favourite activities;
  • Holiday planning;
  • Reasons to choose destinations.

Participants:

  • 40-50 people;
  • Ages 21 to 50;
  • Sourced in the city centre of Newcastle.

Apart from the main points of the research, the paper will also discuss the demographics of the participants which includes their age and gender. Moreover, the willingness of the British people to have holidays and the frequency with which they go on vacations will be mentioned. Furthermore, the research will present answers to the three main questions that are “where do the British people prefer to spend their holidays?”, “ what are their travel experiences?”, and “how do they arrange their holidays”.

Demographics

In total, 50 people answered the questions of the survey. The comparison of the demographics of the participants demonstrates the diversity of the respondents, yet shows that the number of males and females taking part in the research is almost equal. Besides, the age group from 21 to 30 is dominant among both genders. The least represented groups of participants are those younger than 21 and those older than 51. If the former rarely travel independently, the latter represent a significant groups of travelers since many of them are pensioners and enjoy taking trips. Overall, the diverse representation of most of the age groups adds to the validity of the survey results and allows comparison of the holiday-related opinions of the people of Newcastle and the possible responses of the citizens of the United Kingdom in general.

Where do the British people spend their holidays?

Answering the question whether or not they go on holidays most of male and female respondents said “yes”. Only two people (one male and one female) stated that they do not travel. The bar chart reflecting the opinions concerning vacations at home shows that the male and female participants had opposite points of view (the majority of men preferred to stay home, while the majority of women wanted to travel). As for the most favourite holiday destinations of the British people, the two leaders are Spain (chosen by both genders), Italy (chosen by females), and France (chosen by males). However, the most preferable way of travelling for the representatives of both sexes covers several different places during one vacation (this option was selected by 10 women and 12 men). Spain as the most popular vacation destination of the British people in confirmed by The Telegraph (Paris par. 1).The majority of those holidaymakers (26%) who prefer to stay in the UK for their vacations choose London as their most preferred destination (Lazenby par. 8).

Good Experiences

23 men and 23 women answered the question about their positive experiences travelling abroad. The vast majority of respondents reported positive experiences, only one man said he had no positive experience, and one woman gave no answer. The respondents also marked the aspects that contributed to their positive experiences the most. In addition, among all the respondents 5 women and 4 men refused to comment on this subject. The line chart above compares male and female perspectives on the factors that determine their level of satisfaction with a vacation showing that visiting new places and encountering new cultures is the main interest of both genders. Yet, while women value good weather, men appreciate the opportunity to meet new people.

Bad Experiences

Answering the question “have you had bad travel experiences?”, 10 male and 8 female respondents gave a positive answer, while 15 participants of each gender said “no”. This tendency dignifies that the majority of British people enjoy their vacations abroad, yet some of them face unpleasant moments from time to time. The three main categories of bad experiences included delay, bad service and other. The bar chart above demonstrates that bad service was the factor most men felt dissatisfied with. At the same time, women marked “other” category in most cases. Traveling delay is the negative factor of equal importance for the participants of both genders.

How do British people arrange their travels?

The majority of respondents stated that they have one or two holidays a year, yet in rare cases the participants (2 men and 1 woman) reported having more than 3 vacations annually. When it comes to the planning and arrangements, the majority (17 men and 15 women) stated that they make their own travelling plans and book their arrangements, fewer individuals (8 men and 8 women) admitted that they were not responsible for their holiday plans.

Modes and Companions

The patterns concerning the most frequently chosen means of transportation show that both men and women prefer going abroad by plane, yet men also favour travelling by car. The chart that reflects the company of people the British men and women join for a trip demonstrates almost identical answers – people of both genders choose to go on holidays with their families more often. Interestingly, the category marked as “other” was the close second choice even though it has not been specified what kind of people it included.

How and where?

The most popular time for vacations is summer – July and August, and the most preferred place for a vacation is the seaside (Where do British people go on their holidays? par. 1-2).

Findings of the Research

The findings of the presented research show that:

  • The factors that impact the choices of destinations of the British people are weather and food
  • Trying new food, relaxing, and sightseeing -most attractive activities on vacations
  • Food and weather – the determinants of the perceived quality of the holidays

Summarizing the findings of the research one may notice that the participants emphasized the importance of the food, climatic conditions, and relaxation as the most important factors that influences their choice of countries to go to and the level of satisfaction by their vacations. These factors remain equally important for the participants of all ages and both sexes. As for the domestic tourism, the UK residents favour the same activities the pursue travelling abroad (sightseeing, relaxing, and walks) (Tourism Alliance 5).

Conclusion

Respondents are:

  • Willing to travel, invest into vacations.
  • Mainly spend their holidays abroad (Spain, Italy, France are popular destinations).
  • Have mostly positive travel experiences.
  • Negative determinants: delay, bad service.
  • Travel once or twice a year, in the family circle, by plane, make their vacation plans on their own.
