In the story of “The Scarlet Ibis”, James hurts presents the Doodle’s disability to express that pride can cause people to be cruel even to those they love.

Therefore, the narrator was embarrassed by his brother because of the disabilities that he has. To be more specific, the narrator states that, “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk” (hurts 172). As Doodle started to get older and got general understandings, he was still the same physically and on the other side, the narrator was embarrassed by his brother because he couldn’t walk like a normal kid at that age. The Narrator has to help him with most of the stuff that Doodle needs to do and had to carry him around which made the narrator be more embarrassed. Meanwhile, The Narrator was making plans to kill doodle as it states “ So I began to make plans to kill him, by smothering him with a pillow”(hurts 169). Although Doodle was the narrator’s brother, he still made plans to kill him with a pillow just because of the pride that the narrator had which made it so unbelievable. if the narrator would have seen him from just heart and believed that he is his brother and that he needs to take care of him even though he had disabilities. The Narrator’s pride was so important for himself that it made his feelings to be less important than his pride for his loved ones.

In Conclusion, the importance of pride can cruel the people who you love the most just as in the end the narrator did the same thing that he made Doodle walk and help him every day to walk just because of his pride. The narrator’s pride was so much important for himself that he didn’t think about his own brother. The Narrator wanted a brother but when Doodle was born, everyone in the family thought that he would not live. As doodle’s family expected that doodle would not live so long and so his dad started making caffein. Doodles Aunt Nicey was positive about Doodle that he would live just because she believed “he was born in caul and coals was made from Jesus’s nightgown” Page169. At that point pride that aunt Nicey had didn’t affect her love for and doodle’s disabilities. The narrator wanted Doodle to be normal in which he helped him with walking, running and feeding. As Doodle started walking, the narrator started to feel comfortable because now he would not be embarrassed by his brother’s disabilities but he still thought that Doodle is not trying as hard as possible. To sum it all up, Doodle’s disability represents the storm and it tells how Doodle was so close to death and how he got out and he is still alive.

Summarizing, the importance of pride can cruel the people who you love the most just as in the end the narrator did the same thing that he made Doodle walk and help him every day to walk just because of his pride.

The Main Ideas Of The Book The Scarlet Ibis

Brother opens the story about how he always wished he had a younger sibling so he could run and play and do everything he enjoyed doing with someone else. Then, when his mother gave birth to a crippled boy, the Brother’s wish seemed like it was not going to become a reality. Three months passed and his parents decided to give him the name William Armstrong, but his parents informed the Brother that he might not be “all there” Everyone doubted William except for his Brother. This made the time that William grinned at the Brother through the posts on the bed that much more special because it made his wish closer to becoming a reality. Brother had always wanted a brother that he could play with. To prove that Brother is not culpable there are some witnesses such as the swamp, the peacock, and the paris green.

The swamp is a good witness because this is where Doodle and brother spend most of their time. The swamp represents happiness or paradise for boys. When Doodle was first brought there by his brother he started crying. “His little eyes were round with wonder as he gazed about him, and his little hands began to stroke the grass, Then he began to cry”( Hurst, 346). After that day him and Doodle often went down to the swamp, and makes laces and crowns out of flowers. Brother would have not taken him here, and spent this much time with him if he did not care about him. The swamp was where Doodle was thought how to walk, even though he did it for himself it helped his brother greatly. Brother and Doodle even started to think about their future, “We decided that when we were grown, we’d live in Old Woman Swamp and pick dog’s-tongue for a living, Beside the stream, he planned, we’d build us a house of whispering leaves and the swamp birds would be our chickens.”(Hurst, 349). The boys wanted to live together picking dog’s-tongue for a living this can describe the innocence and imagination of the boys because this would never work out in real life. “Mama and Daddy could come live with us if they wanted to, Doodle even came up with the idea to marry Mama and I could marry Daddy”(Hurst, 349).

This describes the also describes the innocence and youthfulness of the boys and they did not know what they were doing, and that this would not work out. “ Sometimes we descended into the greenness of old woman swamp and climbed the rope vines or boxed scientifically beneath the pine where he had learned to walk”(Hurst, 349). Earlier Brother stated that he wanted someone to “box with” and he and his brother started doing just that.

The Peacock stands for the expectations Doodle has from Brother. The Peacocks tail stands for the kites tail, and the kites tail was what brother thought of as a Doodles original name William Armstrong which he said was a “big tail on a small kite”(Hurst, 348). The tail was his expectations from Brother that he could not handle. Doodle could have easily prevented his death if he would have told Brother that he was being pushed to hard. You can not hold Brother culpable for Doodle’s death if it could have been easily prevented if he would have told Brother or his parents. He still looked up to brother and wanted to do whatever he could to make him happy, even if it was hurting himself which would hurt Brother later in life. Doodle did not tell anyone what was going on, therefore no one could ever find out that he was hurting. When the tail went over the sun was when his disabilities took over and he collapsed and died.

Paris green represents what Doodles Brother. Brother is the paris green he protects doodle from everything just like the paris green protects the coffin from insects. “I began to call him Doodle, and in time even Mama and Daddy thought it was a better name than William Armstrong”(Hurst, 345). Brother protected William by naming him Doodle because William is such a big name. This is evident again when he is teaching him to walk and later on in the story when he teaches him to swim, climb, run and box. Even when the doctor had said that he was not capable to walk Doodle and Brother proved them wrong. Brother also made him walk so he could go to school and he would not get bullied. Why would brother put this much time and effort into someone you were planning to kill him, or to blame him when Brother did so much to help.

Brother is innocent for many reasons. Brother takes him to the swamp a lot and thought him to walk, why would Brother do this just to kill Doodle. You can not blame Brother for Doodle’s death because Doodle can make his own decisions on what he wants to do. Brother can not be at fault Doodles death because he was never warned that he was pushing Doodle to hard so he could not stop trying to help Doodle. If Doodle would have told his parents or even he would have told Brother that he was getting pushed to hard he would have never died. You can not blame someone for a death if they did not know they were doing it or it could have been easily solved. Another reason you can not blame Brother for Doodle’s death is because they were both still children, so all they wanted to do was have fun and play around. Brother worked so hard to make Doodle into the brother he wanted him to be why would he want to ruin that by killing him. Brother even protected Doodle and cared for him so no one could hurt him or make fun of him, so why would Brother be to blame for his death if he was helping but did not know he was hurting him. You can not blame brother for Doodle’s death because there were several ways from preventing his death their mom or dad could have stopped them from going outside when there was a storm coming, Doodle could have told Brother he was getting pushed beyond his abilities, or Doodle could have said no to going out. Brother is not culpable for Doodle’s death because he was too young to know what he was doing, and could have been prevented in many ways.

The Deadly Aftermath Of Pride In The Book The Scarlet Ibis

According to recent sibling abuse statistics in a large survey, about 53 percent of children report abuse between them and their siblings at some point (“Sibling Abuse Statistics” 1).In the year 1916, the year that James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis” takes place, we can assume that that percentage was higher because back then, morals and viewpoints were different. In the short story, the narrator has a newly born brother, but he wasn’t quite what he had in mind. Having a brother that could barely move, much less walk ashamed Brother and prompted him to set on fixing this “embarrassment”, so that he could have a normal sibling to run and play with. Throughout the story, he continued to control Doodle and take advantage of him, pushing him until he eventually broke. Pride and shame battle with the narrator’s desire to help Doodle: what little love he had for his brother encourages him to help Doodle become stronger and more able bodied, but he eventually gives way to cruelty and arrogance, and ultimately it leads to the death of his younger brother, making Brother responsible for Doodle’s death.

Brother’s atrocious behavior, which leads him to do very unethical things, contributes to Doodle’s death later on. Even from the very beginning of Doodle’s birth, his mother warned Brother, “He might not…be “all there” (Hurst 1). Brother, who can’t accept anything less than perfect, sets on “fixing” this solution. “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who was possibly not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow” (Hurst 1). This unbelievable mindset of someone who should accept this responsibility of a disabled sibling, instead plans to get rid of him and cover his tracks by silently murdering his own brother. Any normal person would never have such thoughts, but Brother was clearly not normal. Later on one day, Brother took Doodle up to the barn loft and, being the cruel, cold hearted person he was, made Doodle touch his own rat poision-covered coffin just for his own enjoyment. “And before I’ll help you down from the loft, you’re going to have to touch it” (Hurst 2). Showing someone the coffin that was made for them and forcing them to touch the thing that is created to hold their own corpse isn’t exactly the most reassuring thing for someone that has disabilities and everyday is more of a struggle than a normal person. It foreshadows something bad about to happen in the near future, which is exactly what does happen. Brother basically revealed Doodle’s unfortunate fate to him way too soon, and Brother himself ensures that that fate is fulfilled. This wicked behavior is the same behavior that he reveals as he deserts Doodle in a raging storm, killing him.

While it could be argued that Brother enhanced Doodle’s life by teaching him how to walk and be normal, the narrator only did these things because it gave him control of Doodle and his actions. When Brother and Doodle surprised their family on Doodle’s 6th birthday, Doodle walked over to his seat at the table and the parents started rejoicing, because to them, they had never seen Doodle stand, much less walk. This triggered Brother to start crying. “They did not know that I did it for myself, that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother”(Hurst 3). Brother, knowing his brother was disabled, still acted very harsh towards him, even going as far as forcing Doodle to touch his own coffin, because it gave him a sense of power, and enjoyment to boss around a kid with disabilities. Doodle was only taught to walk because the narrator was embarrassed of his physically challenged brother. Any normal person would help their brother try to walk again for him to have a normal life, but for most, they would never do it for their own selfish reasons, like being able to boss around their helpless sibling, or because they were full of shame and embarrassment. Brother’s pride upon seeing that he helped Doodle walk continued to grow in a negative way and he took it to the extreme by unleashing his cruelty out on Doodle and deserting him despite Doodle’s frantic cries, causing the tragic death of this boy, who had just learned to be normal, all just to have his life cut short. This is why Brother is responsible for Doodle’s death.

Doodle wouldn’t have died if Brother had stayed with Doodle, protecting him and getting to safety together. Instead, his pride and selfishness get the best of him and he ran from Doodle, who having been too tired to swim and was following Brother very closely, looking for a sign of mercy. Despite the pleading cries of “don’t leave me!”, Brother ignores him even though he is fully aware of his brother’s heart condition, and flees from his vulnerable brother, who can’t keep up and his extremely weak heart stops beating. He ignored the fact that even though Doodle didn’t have the physical attributes that brother wanted in Doodle, he had a spiritual awareness about the beauty around him. Brother was so focused on Doodle not having the skills that he had that he completely disregarded Doodle’s skills, and tried to force Doodle to be exactly like him. After all the times he treated Doodle horribly and manipulated him, took advantage of him, it eventually broke him to the core. Brother caused his brother’s death, and should be held responsible.

Ed Sullivan Show, which was a famous variety show that was aired in The United States from 1948 to 1971.

The Wheelers’ life became more difficult because the automobile caused problems for them (The people in the town envied them, Herbert Wheelers got accused of defalcation that happened in the bank where he worked, the Wheelers had to live in poverty since they had to spend their money to take care of their car).

It is a surprise since it turns out that the automobile didn’t make the Wheelers’ life become happier, but instead it made the life of the Wheelers to be more difficult since the automobile caused problems for the Wheelers.

The second suspense of the story:

What will the Wheelers do regarding their automobile that had caused problems for them?

It is a suspense because it left the readers wonder about what the Wheelers would do to their automobile that had caused problems for them.

The Wheelers chose to sell their automobile.

It is a surprise because it turns out the Wheelers decided to sell their automobile after it cost them many things, from clothing, friends, food, fun, and almost life itself. It answers the suspense about what the Wheelers would do to their automobile that had caused problems for them.

4. Situational irony

Expectation: After Doodle’s brother had succeeded in teaching Doodle how to walk, Doodle’s brother decided to train Doodle in other physical training (Doodle’s brother taught Doodle to climb trees, to fight, to swim, and to run) so Doodle could keep up with the other boys when Doodle started school, it is expected that Doodle would be successful in the physical training)

Fulfillment: In the end, Doodle passed away due to the physical training that his brother had told him to do, because Doodle, who was physically weak, couldn’t withstand the physical training that his brother had instructed him to do.

It is a situational irony because it is expected that Doodle’s brother would be successful in training Doodle to be physically stronger, but in the end, it was the physical training that Doodle’s brother had told Doodle to do which killed Doodle.

Dramatic Irony

In the Scarlet Ibis, the readers know that Doodle would not be able to withstand the physical training that his brother told him to do. The reason for that is because Doodle’s physical condition was very weak and his brother trained him too hard.

However, in the story, Doodle’s brother thought that Doodle would be able to withstand the training program that the narrator had told him to do. As a result, Doodle passed away due to his body would not able to withstand the physical training that his brother had instructed him to do.

It is a dramatic irony because there is a contradiction between what the readers know and what Doodle’s brother knows about Doodle’s physical condition. The readers know that Doodle was too weak and he would not be able to continue doing the physical training that his brother told him to do, while Doodle’s brother kept pushing Doodle to do the physical training. Therefore, Doodle died because his body couldn’t endure the physical training that his brother had instructed him to do.

5. In the story The Scarlet Ibis, the scarlet ibis bird (the bird that has scarlet feathers, which died in the yard Doodle’s family) is the symbolism of Doodle’s death. The reason is because when the scarlet ibis bird died, the neck of the scarlet ibis bird was broken, which is proven in this quotation: “Its long, graceful neck jerked twice into an S, then straightened out, and the bird was still.” (On the third page). When Doodle died, his neck was also broken like the scarlet ibis bird, which is proven in this quotation: “He say very awkwardly, with his head thrown far back, making his vermilion neck appear unusually long and slim.” (On the fourth page). When the scarlet ibis bird died, the position of the bird legs were curved, which is proven in the following quotations: “Its legs were crossed and its clawlike feet were delicately curved at rest.” (On the third page). The position of Doodle’s legs when he died was also similar to the scarlet ibis bird, because the legs of Doodle were also bent sharply like the position of the legs of the scarlet ibis bird when the scarlet ibis died, which is proven in this quotation: “His little legs, bent sharply at the knees, had never before seemed so fragile, so thin.” (On the fourth page). The story describes scarlet ibis as a bird that has scarlet as the color of its feathers, scarlet is the color of red which is brilliant. It is proven in this quotation: “On the topmost branch a bird the size of a chicken, with scarlet feathers and long legs, was precariously.” (On the third page). When Doodle died, the blood which was coming out from his mouth has the same color with the feathers of the scarlet ibis, which was a brilliant red (scarlet). It is proven in the following quotation: “He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red.” (On the fourth page). In conclusion, the scarlet ibis bird is the symbolism of Doodle’s death, since the positioned of the bird when the bird died and the positioned of Doodle when he died was similar, and the color of the bird’s feather and the color of Doodle’s was similar.

6. Social conflict between the Doodle’s brother and Doodle

Cause: The conflict happened because Doodle’s brother and Doodle had conflicting ideas about whether Doodle should learn how to walk or not.

Doodle’s brother

On one hand, the narrator wanted to teach Doodle how to walk because the narrator sure that Doodle could walk.

Proof:

‘I’m going to teach you to walk, Doodle,’ I said. (On the second page)

‘Oh, you can walk,’ I said, and I took him by the arms and stood him up. (On the second page)

On the other hand, Doodle didn’t want to learn to walk because everybody told him that he couldn’t walk.

‘I can’t walk, Brother,’ he said. ‘Who says so?’ I demanded. ‘Mama, the doctor–everybody.’ (On the second page)

Resolution: The conflict between the narrator and Doodle was resolved because Doodle began practicing to walk with the narrator.

The connection between the theme and the characteristics of Doodle’s brother: I got the theme from the portrayal of Doodle’s brother. In the story, Doodle’s brother is portrayed as a prideful, cruel, and arrogant person. Doodle’s brother thought himself to be good at many things and he also believed that he had the inability to be wrong. He had planned to kill Doodle by smothering Doodle because he didn’t want to have a brother who was an invalid person. He only taught Doodle to walk because he was ashamed to have a brother who was a cripple and he didn’t want his pride to be hurt. Doodle’s brother’s pride preventing the him to give up when he taught Doodle to walk. He continually teaching Doodle to walk, and after Doodle could walk, he kept training Doodle in other physical activities because he wanted Doodle to be a person that he could be proud of.he left Doodle alone when it was raining by running from Doodle as fast as possible, and as a result, Doodle died because his body couldn’t withstand the pressure from the training that his brother had told him to do. In the end, the characteristics of Doodle’s brother caused disaster for both himself and Doodle. Doodle’s brother lost his brother, Doodle, due to his own pride, arrogance, and cruelty, while Doodle lost his life because the cruelty, pride, and arrogance of his brother caused his brother to keep pushing him to do physical activities which his body could not endure. The portrayal of the narrator shown that sometimes doing cruel things and continually pushing others to do things for someone’s own pride and arrogance might lead to disaster for someone and others.
