Academic fields of study are not static entities. The knowledge base within a field evolves through research, professional application, and the discourse in which participants in the field engage. The relationship among these three practices may be seen as bidirectional and cyclical in effect. Research and application affect discourse, and discursive communication affects how research and application is conceptualized, designed, and practiced.
This week, you begin a course-long project called an Environmental Scan. The Environmental Scan is an 8-week survey of evaluation topics and discourse in the professional community of evaluation. For this Assignment, you will observe professional websites, social media, magazines, online conferences, blogs, and other literature dedicated to evaluation topics (note that these do not have to be empirical research) and record your notes and reflections on what you read as blog posts in a running document. Your task is to describe what you find as well as identify and discuss themes and trends in the content. You should also track and discuss themes and trends in the comments and feedback left by commentators (e.g., blog comments or social media responses).
The purpose of this scan is to track topics and activity over time to observe and synthesize knowledge being discussed or generated by evaluation professionals. Completion of this assignment should mimic the process for completing a needs assessment in a program evaluation.
As noted in the Environmental Scan Guidelines, your observation of the environment (i.e., professional websites, social media, blogs) should be that of observer. While enrolled in this course, you do not need to be a contributor to the professional communities that you are observing for this assignment.

Graded Assessment #7: Diagnostic Case Study
Paper
The Diagnostic Paper focuses on the application of a specific diagnostic category
found in the DSM 5-TR (e.g., Schizophrenia, Borderline Personality Disorder, Conduct Disorder, etc.) to a case study.  Students will select a case study from their own practice, find a case study in the literature, or create a case study of a client who appears to have the selected mental health diagnosis (the case study is not part of the 5-8-page count but must be provided at the beginning of the paper).
The 8-10-page paper must be well-written, in APA style, and without spelling or grammatical errors (please submit your paper to Grammarly to ensure it is well-written!).  The paper must include no less than 5 peer-reviewed journal articles addressing the selected diagnosis and supporting your diagnosis of the client in the case study.  The paper can either be done in a group or individually. In order to demonstrate mastery of the course materials, the Final Diagnostic Paper must include the following:
The Selected Diagnosis
Discuss (do not list!!) the major features of the diagnostic criteria found in the DSM-5-TR that apply to your selected case
Assessment
Include in this section the empirically-based assessment tools commonly used to make this particular diagnosis in order to rule out any differential diagnoses
Discuss the usefulness and appropriateness of these assessment tools when applied to children or adults from diverse populations
Discuss how the client would be assessed from a Medical Model
Discuss how the client would be assessed from a person-in-environment perspective
Values and Ethics
Discuss any issues related to values and ethics that might be encountered when working with a client who has been given this diagnosis and how a clinical social worker might address them.

Your paper should include proper grammar, APA formatting, style, citations, and references, as well as an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
Define epistemology and explain its importance to one’s worldview and definition of social justice terms such as antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Describe your overall understanding of the differences that you see in the epistemological assumptions of a historic Judeo-Christian worldview and that of modern social justice theories and ideas in these areas and how they affect the terminology and visions of justice represented. How are these differences related to their understanding of truth, what it is, and where it comes from?
Based on the readings and course material provided, identify and describe 2-3 themes you see in the Judeo-Christian view of the world and the vision they represent regarding issues of justice.
Based on the readings and course material provided, identify and describe 2-3 themes you see in the Critical Social Theories and Justice view and understanding of the world and the vision they represent for issues of justice.
Based on the worldview areas of Problem, Evil, and Solution indicated on the comparison chart, provide a summary of at least two differences you see between the worldviews in their definitions, understandings, and approaches. Discuss how your approach to a specific issue would be impacted if you believed one of these visions of truth and the world versus the other.
Explain your thoughts and the insights you gained overall from the reading and information provided in the resources for this week. Identify one or two ways the material can help you think more critically and effectively about issues of social justice, including ideas such as antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion, as you engage with these ideas in social work.

In post-conflict settings, transitional justice, rule of law, and human rights are inextricably intertwined. Any attempt to separate them can lead to disastrous consequences. Do you agree with the above statement? Please support your position with a reasoned analysis incorporating course content, readings, and real-world examples and current events. You may want to reflect on the situations in Rwanda, South Africa, Libya, and/or Iraq in your analysis.

The duty to warn/protect is often viewed as an easily resolved scenario in which a social worker is able to see clear danger and moves to avoid such danger through breaking confidentiality and bringing in additional help. While these instances occur, it is far more often that the line between clear danger and potential risk is blurry and tough to determine. In the dilemma in this module, you need to work to determine if the scenario rises to the level of duty to warn/protect. In practice, it is critical that you are able to survey the scenario, extract the pertinent information, make educated and appropriate inferences, and react appropriately.
In this scenario, you are a school social worker that has been working with Maria, a 14-year-old student that you have been seeing weekly for 5 months. Maria’s parents are navigating a divorce, and Maria has been struggling with depressive episodes, as well as impulse control issues. Maria often speaks to you about her anger and how quickly she snaps on classmates that make her angry. She hates this response and often feel powerless in her responses. “It’s like the anger takes over, and I don’t even know where it comes from…like I can’t control it….and I hate that. I promise I’m not a mean person,” she relates to you in a session. Today, the principal of the school stops in your office and says that he is concerned about Maria’s tendency to fight and respond with anger. He shares that he has a responsibility to keep students safe, and he needs to know more of Maria’s story in an attempt to make the school a safe place. “Can you just give me her file and your notes so that I can go over them? I just need to know what’s going on,” he says.
Your initial thread must demonstrate that you have taken time to identify the dilemma and weigh the options and potential impact.
Include the following in your post:
Whether you believe that this scenario requires action or not.
If so, what steps must be taken? Additionally, how will you demonstrate client care throughout this process?
If you determine that this instance does not require you to warn/protect, you must discuss why you believe this. Additionally, you need to include what steps you would take to mitigate risk, and how you would move forward with the client.
Finally, discuss how you might leverage supervision and consultation in this scenario.
Your post must be professional, thoughtful, and demonstrate your ability to view all sides of complex scenarios. For this assignment find and use current Social Work data to support your work.
