News and Highlights

Harmful effects of sneakers on our environment

Sneakers are made up of harmful chemicals which are usually disposed of in landfills by the methods of incineration and dumping with which our environment is affected so badly. Sneakers are made up of three parts: the leather upper, the elastic midsole, and an abrasion-resistant sole. The bright white color of the sneakers is because of titanium oxide and dyes on the white logo are made of heavy metal, laces shoes are made up of nonrecycled polyester. Isocyanates are used to make the foamy midsole of the shoes which is the reason for various health hazards like irritation to the eyes, mucous membranes, asthma or bronchitis, and also bad lung functioning. Where the production of sneakers is harmful the same page improper disposal of sneakers is even more harmful as sneakers are non-biodegradable so their parts are left in the landfills even after destroying them and the harmful chemicals from this are destroying our surroundings. (Chelsey Schwab, 2008)

Why women’s shoes are so painful

Unluckily when it comes to my shoes, the only thing we can think of “ will these shoes cause my shoes to dribble blood all over my open-plan office’? Every time women’s shoes are always so painful compared to men’s shoes because women’s shoes are designed to make women’s feet as slim as possible. Wearing such shoes does not mean professionalism. The reason for this rising problem is online shopping. Because if you buy any pair of shoes and you don’t know how it’s going to fit your foot. Instead of this if you are buying shoes from a shop you can go to the shop and change it. (khazan,n.d)

Unwrinkle leather shoes with iron

All of us used to wear leather shoes. with time our shoes got wrinkled when we usually bend our feet regularly. These wrinkles on shoes look pretty ugly. We can remove these wrinkles with the help of a steam iron. Normally we iron our clothes only to rid of wrinkles but now we can do this with our shoes also. You just have to get your shoes and warp it will the wet cotton cloth and then put a steam iron on them for some time. When you will do it all the wrinkles from your leather shoes will be gone. (Klosowski, T,2014)

A simple guide on dress shoes

If you are a man you should know the importance of a good pair of shoes. no matter if you are wearing a really expensive and good-looking suit, it will not matter if you are not wearing a good pair of shoes with this. With shoes, we should only think of quality.

There are a few basic things to look for to check the quality:

The shoes should be made of pure leather and have leather soles also.

Well-made shoes are always stitched not glued.

Stitching should be near and clean.

So next time whenever you are wearing shoes always check if these are looking good for your day, it is suitable for work or a party wherever you are going. Always check if it needs shinning or not.

Remember your shoes can make or destroy your look so be very particular about your shoes the next time. (Reeves, 2014)

Issues

There are always issues sins every industry no matter what it produces and creates has a negative impact somewhere and to someone, the following issue has been looked up in this commodity.

Environmental:

With regards to every stage of making a shoe, there are many environmental harms and concerns for the first stage when the shoes are being manufactured in the factories a lot of fuel and energy are used up to them.

And these manufacturing are usually done in third nations and for this, even more, fuel for transportation and shipping of the product is used up which directly harms the water bodies.

Now for the manufacturing activities, there are a lot of chemicals and adhesives used in making these such as Chlorinated phenols, tribromphenol, chlorinated paraffin, dimethyl fumarate, etc. that are used to preserve the leather and the material of the shoes which can easily get leaked in the environment such as air, rivers.

The last and most dangerous part is the disposal of the shoes that don’t decompose fast because of the chemicals that are used in the manufacturing process. Also, the chemicals and adhesives get dissolved into the soil, and water bodies get in touch with contaminating it and making it worse for the poor animals. (‘Environmental Impact’)

Economical:

As we stated before in the environmental issue about the manufacturing being done in the third nations these suppliers and factories pay the workers 45-65 % fewer wages then than the ‘living wage’ the workers don’t get any incentives and benefits of working there and they cannot afford and have a good standard of life. The families and the children are getting suffered and they face illiteracy and the inability to merge into this high-tech world now. (Tiwari RR, 2005)

Social:

The world’s most producing countries are China and India Vietnam, and Bangladesh. This industry needs labor more than machines are the reason for the outsourcing of these labor-intensive countries.

And these countries are still developing and poor in economics. And this leads to child labor and exploitation. In Bhairab, Bangladesh. Over 3,200 children work for long hours in small shoe factories, under poor working conditions and ventilation in the rooms. The children have also reported that the employers make them sleep in the factories and not let them go home which leads to the birth of forced labor in that situation and to make it worse the employers have also sexually abused them. (popi, n.d.)

Stakeholders

Consumers

The consumer and users of the shoes are the stakeholders their choice and awareness of the industry can change the demand and supply of this commodity.

Government

The government of every country that has a link to the supply chain and consumption is connected to this.

Organizations

All the organizations that fight for the rights of labor laws and child rights are directly connected as their actions can cause harm to the manufacturer on a very big scale.

Unions

Unions and social groups in the country or are if the manufacturing can persuade the owner to agree with the points and wishes they need in the working.

Employees and workers

The employees in the corporate sector and the workers in the factories are big stakeholders because this whole industry is running.

Suppliers

Suppliers of the raw materials and the transportation links are also affected by any decisions taken by this industry.

Evidence of CSR

Nike the company we found has a good and innovative CSR by reusing old shoes and all the stuff that is being used, they grind it and use that in tennis ball grounds for the floor. They also address the environmental issues of manufacturing in their sustainability report and their report is being checked

  • Pwc assurance report
  • Global reporting initiative index (GRI) index (Nike, ‘Reports’)

Significant issue

The significant issue that we have analyzed is child labor and abuse done by factory owners and employers. This issue involves children who are the future of this world. And according to us, it is the responsibility of the government and the business companies whose contracts these manufacturers are holding to ensure that these practices are not being done under their concerned area and business.

Other stakeholders are

The consumers: These are the ones who should take moment and take the initiative to know what shoes they are wearing are produced by these innocent children under harsh circumstances.

Media: The media has already given good coverage to this problem but it can be improved the companies and government practices after their commitments to taking initiatives to reduce this.

Competitors: All other competitors in the industry are confronted by this issue.

Conclusion

The key learnings and experience, we gain from this report as a manager are that being managers and entrepreneurs of vast companies gives you more power and responsibility to asses and do what is good for the society, environment, and stakeholders in very well-distributed ratios.

Also how and why keeping an eye on the supply chain is important and to what extent our decisions and outsourcing can cause damage and contribution to societal damage.

Brands and Consumerism: Informative Essay on Converse Shoes

Sneaker shoes are a currency that makes people feel like they are expressing their individuality, but they are doing so in a way that is limited and within an accepted framework. Converse shoes are one of these brands that work within the culture industries that through its advertising, appeals to people to stand out, when in fact, they are accepting a standard identity. The advertising is aimed at young people but it also relies on nostalgia and history to make it look like the Converse shoes are unique. This appeals to many people and has led to the success of the brand.

Commodities are not just sold to be used, instead, they act as signs that communicate things about peoples’ identities and their social status. In a capitalist society, everything gets commodified and can be exchanged, and this is considered the starting point of communication (Fuchs, 2012, 697). The different brands of shoes are encoded with signs that make it appealing for people to buy them. There are certain brands that have an image. For example, Adidas is associated with sports, Nike with celebrity endorsements, and Converse is part of the skater and nostalgic scene. They used to be very famous in the 1980s and many rappers would wear them, but now they have mass appeal. The brand is part of the culture industries in that it is a commodity that is used to communicate to people, but it goes beyond that as well. It is an artifact of the culture industries. In the digital age, culture is also defined as a way of “consuming free time” (Markus, 2013, 154). Whereas before, there was a separation between low and high culture, with the high culture reflecting artifacts that showed people who appreciated it had free time, now that has changed. In the past, low culture was considered to be “folk culture,” and it was considered popular culture (Markus, 2013, 129). In today’s climate, the line between low and high culture has largely disappeared, and the culture industries produce all forms, without there being any difference between what used to be high and low culture (Markus, 2013, 129). The advertisements for shoes reflect that. They have photos of rich celebrities using them, and also of regular skateboarders. The more appeal that a product has, then the more profits the company will make in selling these products. The way that this is done is by using advertising to flatten the differences between classes and just present the product as being accessible to everybody who wants to buy into the image that is being sold.

The advertisements for Converse shoes are targeted at young people. However, there is also a connection to the past in the advertisements. On the website, there is an advertisement that states the shoes are older than the Queen of England. Converse was started in 1908 as rubber shoes, but it was not until 1915 that they became known for everyday, athletic shoes (Brands, 11/13/2018). It was not until the 1980s though that the brand became known for endorsements, and it was worn by athletes and rock stars, including Kurt Cobain (Brands, 11/13/2018). In the 2000s, Nike bought the shoes and they had a revival in popularity. Along with being an everyday shoe, the brand also became fashionable for people to wear. When people buy a pair of Converse they are doing two things at the same time, which is to assert their individuality but also to associate themselves with the images that come with the brand they are buying.

Brands like Converse are artifacts in the culture industries that make people conform to the dominant ideas of the society they live in. Generally, people want to feel independent. They like to think that they are unique and that they do not fall for the gimmicks of advertising. However, that desire is something that is preyed on by advertisers to sell their products. In the end, as people buy products to establish their identity, they are actually conforming to standard roles that are accepted. Skaters will buy Converse because everyone in their community wears them. A skater might think he is distancing himself from mainstream society by buying them, but he is actually accepting the standardized identity of “the skater.” Whereas before there was a class consciousness that people formed with what they bought, now there is more of a group identity that people express through the things they consume.

Converse shoes are one of the many brands that have a strong appeal to people because of their history and the people associated with them. It is an artifact in the culture industries that are designed to turn everything into a commodity. When people buy these commodities they are expressing something about their identity, but unfortunately, it is an identity chosen from a finite set of available ones.

My Shoes Are a Reflection of Who I Am

I’m going to let you in on a secret. I have a shoe obsession. All of my friends seem to misunderstand the statement a pair of shoes can make. But for me, the shoes I wear are not merely just to protect, comfort, or even cover my feet, but they are a reflection of who I am.

Now, you may wonder, who am I? You should look down at my feet. I could be wearing my Nike Air Max 97’s which is my confidence, my leadership, my ‘I’m trying to look cooler than I really am’ shoes. My feet are comfortable in my laceless sneakers and can wiggle at will. Very similar to my feet in my laceless sneakers, I’m not a fan of being constrained. I have a surplus of energy that must not go to waste. I might even be wearing my moccasins. I’ll wear these on bitter winter nights when I’m next to the fireplace and spending time with my family. My moccasins are my gentle side. I wear them and I can listen to my friend’s problems and help them overcome their issues. But my favorite pair of shoes has to be my cream-white Nike blazers. They’re my uniqueness, my courage, my adventurous side. Not one person I know has them. However, when I feel like dialing it down and not drawing attention to my sneakers, or myself, I’ll wear my gym shoes. These sneakers allow me to blend in with others and therefore allow me to be independent. I’ll wear them on a run, tracking through the woods, late-night intense workouts, or even when I jump in the local reservoir. My hiking boots demonstrate my love for adventure and fishing. Beat up and formed to the shape of my foot, when wearing them I feel a deep connection to nature.

During college, I plan to add to my collection with another shelf full of outlandish sneakers. For each piece of my personality, I find or enhance through my college experiences, I will come across a pair of sneakers to reflect it. Maybe a pair of sandals for long trips to the beach with new friends or a professional pair of dress shoes for my business classes. As I begin to understand myself and my aspirations become clearer, my collection will expand.

When I am finished with college, I’ll be prepared. I’ll be ready for a change. I suspect I’ll only need one pair after college. The shoes will be unique and comfortable, I will be able to wear them at work and when I’m home. A mix of every shoe on my shelf, this single pair will represent each piece of my personality every step along the way. I won’t have a separate pair for each trait or quality. This one pair will be universal. They will portray my independence and maturity. I’ll keep a few of the shoes from my old collection. Maybe I’ll throw on the old blazers when I’m feeling crazy, when I remember that young surge of energy and recall the boy who once wore them, a young ignorant boy eager to learn with potential to grow.

I am entering college inexperienced, a bundle of excitement, independence, and motivation. My shelf full of shoes demonstrates my variety of interests, as well as my inability to choose one interest that will entertain me for life. I want to graduate college with a plan, having identified an interest to pursue that will add character and meaning to my life.

Informative Essay about Converse as an International Brand of Shoes

Introduction

Converse is an international brand of shoes that needs to be introduced. While this brand is not as popular as Adidas and Nike, it still has its own fanatic fan base. After successfully working for a shoe company, a 47-year-old quit his job and started his own business. Marquis Mill Converse resigned as a respected manager and opened another small company in Malden, Massachusettes. Started in 1908, the Converse Rubber Shoe Company is a retail business by making rubber shoes for all parties to garden, sightsee, go to the market, sweep the garbage or play ball. After seven years, it was in 1915 that Converse was tapping into the sports industry by producing tennis shoes.

It started in 1921 when a basketball player came to see him and complained of foot pain. As a basketball player, Charles ‘Chuck’ Taylor suggested that the Converse logo be inserted on the inside of the shoe to protect the ankle. Converse found the proposal interesting and celebrated the proposal with the Converse C logo and a star placed on the inside of the shoe. In return, Chuck was given the opportunity to become a Converse sales agent and to be the ambassador to introduce Converse to his basketball friends.

Not enough for basketball, probably because of the quality of the All-Star pair, Converse was also awarded a contract for rubber-based equipment such as shoes for American soldiers training in World War II in 1941. After the war ended, Converse colonized the minds of American children and adolescents by publishing a yearbook (Converse Year Book) featuring children and teenagers wearing Converse All-Star shoes. As a result, in the 1950s to 1960s Converse became a craze for American schools and colleges, especially student-athletes. Up to 500 million pairs of All-Star shoes have been sold, accounting for 80% of the running shoe market. In addition, Converse has sponsored an American first professional black team, New York Renaissance. So far Converse has been named the official shoe of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

After Converse was relieved to embark on a dream of conquering the United States, brands from outside the United States such as Adidas, Puma, and Onitsuka Tigers emerged as well as local brands such as Nike that began to compete with Converse. Converse is getting more and more excited when basketball players are about to leave Converse and choose a new sporty and modern design. Converse was no longer able to become a major player in the industry. It’s even worse when the title ‘NBA Official Shoes’ has been stripped of Converse. Converse made every effort to keep up with current trends by improving its basketball footwear, but luckily it still didn’t stand in the way of this once-great company. After no longer being a major player in the basketball industry, Converse began to settle down and focus its sales on the majority of those who did not play basketball, but only used Converse shoes, especially for teenagers. Although Converse has a place in a handful of teens, its limited design collections have led to Converse’s decline in the local market.

Since the early 90s, the US economy has been in decline. Converse also cannot escape its effects. Debt is getting worse, as competition intensifies, and demand for Converse-made shoes is decreasing. Converse is deteriorating and unable to fight another company. At its peak, in 2001 Converse was declared bankrupt. Then, in April 2001, Acquisition of Shoes, led by Marsden Cason and Bill Simon, bought the brand from the bankruptcy and added industry partners Jack Boys, Jim Stroesser, Lisa Kempa, and David Maddocks to lead the recovery. In 2003, Converse again changed hands. Nike has purchased Converse brands and their various products such as shirts, pants, hats, keychains, and more. In January 2013, Converse announced plans for a new headquarters building and moved in April 2015.

Today the company’s portfolio includes products under the Converse, Cons, Chuck Taylor All-Star, Jack Purcell, One Star, and Star Chevron trademarks. Converse also frequently collaborates on special edition product releases with other brands such as John Varvatos. Converse shoes are distinguished by a number of features, including the company’s star insignia, the All-Star’s rubber sole, smooth rounded toe, and wrap-around strip. As of 2019, Converse sold products through 109 company-owned retail stores in the United States and 63 stores in international markets. Converse employees are counted among the 76,700 employees of Nike Inc. worldwide

Raw materials

The shoes are made from canvas, rubber, synthetic dye, metal eyelets, and adhesive that is specially made in the Converse manufacturing plants. The laces are made from polyester and plastic.

Manufacturing

Converse shoes are created using a double-wrap vulcanized shoe-making process. In this process, the canvas upper receives a pre-wrap, a thin layer of rubber, before the rubber outsole is attached. The pre-wrap and outsole are bonded and these parts of the shoe are heated in a vulcanizing oven at temperatures over 300°F. Once this is complete and the rubber has been cured, the rubber toe cap is trimmed and the outer wrap is applied. Finally, the foxing tape is applied, along with the all-star logo, to cover the seams of the outer wrap.

Life of use

Converse is known for appealing to a diverse population of customers. They are commonly used as an athletic shoes, for everyday fashion, and as a form of creative expression. Due to the nature of shoes, it is difficult to determine the exact lifespan of Converse. If worn every day, the shoes generally last for about one year. Also, the shoes generally hold together better in warmer climates than in colder climates. For example, I am a fan of converse shoes here is my photo with my converse shoes.

Disposal

After they are worn out, shoes can either be recycled or thrown away. With Nike’s ReUSE-A-Shoe program, the shoes can be ground down and separated into rubber, foam, and fiber. These materials are used to create new ways to play and are used in track surfaces, gym floor tiles, and playground mats. This recycling program is a much better alternative than throwing the shoes away. When thrown into a landfill, the shoes decompose at a rate of 1 year for canvas, 50 – 80 years for rubber, 20 years for polyester, and 70 years for plastic. Find a Nike ReUSE – A – Shoe location near you.

Weakness of Converse

Lack of Differentiation

Though Converse has different names for different categories of shoes, they have a lot of products on one line with minute differences that is not easy to spot. This lack of differentiation often creates confusion in the mind of the customers. Almost all the shoes are in the same design making it difficult for customers to find the shoes they want. This same design also makes people less interested in these shoes. Although they have worked with many famous people to collaborate, they still maintain their original design. For example, when Nike bought Converse in 2003, Jack Purcell’s shoes were kept in production, and are still in production today. Jack Purcell shoes are very similar to the Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars, except Jack Purcell shoes have better support and curved curves, and have a ‘small feet’ smile on the front. Classic Purcell tennis shoes have not changed since their heyday in the 1950s and 1960s when they were first dubbed ‘Tips Blue’ and ‘Smilies’, but they have increased in price from 1965 to the present. many appeals to fashion from sports use.

Not a variety of product choices:

Since their products just intend to provide some basic color versions for the first time released such as Black, Red, Blue, Grey, Burgundy, and White, it will limit customer choices from choosing their favorite colors of their shoes. Thus, to address this problem, we need to make the customers focus more on the quality and not just focusing on the shoe color. Although there are many different colors for customers to choose from, they still maintain the same footprint and only change the pattern on the shoe. Many customers say that they are tired of the same Converse footwear and the same.

Low brand position

The brand name Converse is very well-known for almost everyone from young kids to adults; however, the Converse shoes position is placed at the mid-range shoes in customers’ mind since many people believe Converse is just a“casual wear shoes” or maybe “cheap shoes “ when compared to other brands such as Addidas, Vans or New Balance. Many people are still not interested in these shoes because of the lack of advertising to attract attention and many consider these shoes to be ‘old fashioned”. With the introduction of a new brand that makes the shoe design more attractive, Converse’s consumers are becoming fewer and fewer. Converse shoes are considered outdated due to the emergence of new types of shoes for young people to wear. This makes Converse less likely to occupy the hearts of consumers for purchase or sale because the factors that make these shoes are no longer attractive and popular.

Focusing on a particular segment of people

If you’re a rock enthusiast, you should know about these rockers’ official shoes. Not a few rock kids use Converse. While some rockstars prefer Dr. Martens or Adidas shoes as their shoes, they are still unable to resist the influence of Converse All-Star. While these shoes look simple, they are actually durable and flexible and most importantly these shoes are reasonably priced. Converse has always been associated with Grunge music groups like Nirvana. This is because, Kurt Cobain’s spirit always wore these cheap shoes until he died, and he still wore a pair of Converse All-Star shoes.

Recommendations and implementation plan

Product Development

Converse is said to be less of a concern nowadays because its footwear is hard and will hurt its users’ feet. The same, slightly thicker footwear makes it difficult for users to wear those shoes more often. Converse, therefore, needs to develop its product. For example, footwear that is often said to be thick and painful can be replaced with something comfortable and not too painful. Also, diversify the pattern or design on the shoe canvas fabric. For example, put more interesting and unique patterns to it. Converse is also often said to be obsolete and has not changed since with each of its new shoes, there has been no change in the shape of its footwear. Still no changes like Nike or Adidas shoes. If there is a change to the shoe site it is just one line or no line. So recently Converse has introduced their new shoes with something very unique and exciting. They have also released shoes that can change color. The classic white sneaker changes to bright shades of orange, blue, and purple when exposed to sunlight. Their shoes also have a new and more unique site than others.

Make promotions and introduce more product

Converse is known for its unique and attractive canvas shoes. Many teenagers wear it because it is so unique and different from ordinary canvas shoes. However, many are unaware that Converse has also released many products such as clothes, bags, hats, and more. Converse, therefore, needs to promote or re-introduce its new product. Promotions should also be done on their products so that customers will not focus only on footwear but also on other products. Not everyone knows that Converse also produces a variety of products because promotions are always done on shoes only. Therefore, promotion of other products should also be done so that the brand can compete with the current well-known brand. People would also be more interested if Converse had a range of new and exciting products for consumers around the world.
