Question Set 5
Imagine a “Sword in the Stone” has been placed under the Washington Square Arch, with an invitation to one who is worthy to pull it and take ownership (or something to that effect).
Ignoring the magical part, you set out to develop a measure of strength that could be used to evaluate the strength of incoming NYU students, so that they might attempt to pull the sword (bear with me here).
You begin with a dumbbell that has not been validated as a measure of strength and so we assume Sensitivity (Se) and Specificity (Sp) are both 0.50. You will assess strength among NYU students but have no basis to estimate the distribution of dumbbell lifting strength so we assume prevalence is 0.50.
Instructions: Adjust the R web-app according to the instructions below. [https://nyupsychometrics.shinyapps.io/RShinyApp]
a) You want to identify individuals who are exceptionally strong, but you’re at NYU and you estimate the prevalence of exceptional strength is only about 10% within the NYU student research pool.
1) Do you care more about the specificity or the sensitivity of the dumbbell, and why?
2) Adjust prevalence in the R-app to match the % of strong students. How is predictive power affected?
b) Your dumbbell is very heavy and it ends up very few students can lift it at all.
1) Do you think this is a useful outcome measure for research on strength? Why?
2) What adjustment(s) would you need for this to be more useful as an outcome?

First you started with identifying a research topic and developing a research qu

First you started with identifying a research topic and developing a research question. Then you searched for 5 peer-reviewed research articles to help answer your research question.
Now, you will demonstrate your understanding of research methods and the ability to distinguish different study features. All of your five empirical sources should help you answer your research question even if they use different study designs, measurements, and sampling.
The rough draft is worth 25 points. You will earn points based on meeting the criteria indicated in the grading rubric below.
GRADING RUBRIC
POINTS
STUDY DESIGN (200-300 words)
Name each of the study designs used in your sources.
Define the study design used in each of your sources.
Describe any similarities in the study designs.
Describe any differences in the study designs.
Discuss how the differences in the study designs would influence the study findings.
5 points
MEASUREMENT (200-300 words)
Name and describe the exposure in each of your sources.
Describe how the exposure was measured in each of your sources.
Name and describe the outcome was measured in each of your sources.
Describe how the outcome was measured in each of your five sources.
Discuss how the differences in the definitions and measurements of both the exposure and the outcome would influence the study findings.
5 points
SAMPLING (200-300 words)
Name and define the sampling strategy used in each of your sources.
Describe similarities in the target population of each study.
Describe differences in the target population of each study.
Discuss how the differences in the sampling strategies would influence the study findings.
Discuss how the differences in target populations would influence the study findings.

SYNTHESIS (500-600 words)
Start with a topic sentence that introduces your research question.
Provide some background information on your topic using your two reputable websites.
Provide a high-level overview of how the five sources answer your research question (or if you do not think you they do, then discuss why not).
Synthesize the evidence across your five sources in support of the conclusions. Address any evidence that contradicts each other and explain why you think that is.
Describe at least one strength and at least two limitations of the conclusions you can draw for your research question based on your five sources and explain why. Think about what information is still missing or what biases you are not sure have been addressed yet.
Wrap up your synthesis so that it ends with a clear takeaway based on prior sections.

Read the Commentary (9/29/16): “An Intriguing Link Between Police Shootings and Black Voter Registration”. This is an example of an ecological study. For your post, identify: what question is the study being discussed examining? What is the outcome and define how it is measured? What exposures are being examined (there are a few)? What did the study demonstrate? What are your reactions to this study? Please post one original post and one reaction to your peer for full credit.
here is classmate post: ”This ecological study examines how Black Americans are impacted by police shootings in the United States by state, and why some states have higher rates than others. The study found that there is an “over-representation” ratio for fatal police shootings of Black Americans. This was measured by comparing the percentage of Black Americans killed by the police to the overall Black population in an area. In just a few examples throughout the country, there was a disproportionately high number of Black Americans killed by the police compared to the general Black population. The exposures examined are: eligible Black Americans registered to vote, the black-to-white incarceration ratio, median household income, income inequality according to the Gini index, and rates of those college-educated. Data was collected for each indicator regarding the specific area being studied. The study demonstrated that higher voter registration rates among Black Americans go hand in hand with a lowered over-representation ratio in the area. Voter registration ranked #1 as a determinant of fatal police shootings of Black Americans in this study. Though voting came first, income inequality and higher education are also shown to be important factors as well. The findings of this study are quite surprising for me, as I did not think voter registration impacts much when it comes to police violence and fatalities for Black Americans. I think this information could be useful in advocating for more funding to increase voter registration for those eligible in communities with a large Black population. This could also be a call to those looking to change the high incidents of police violence locally and register to vote. A lot more research should be done on this topic, as well as a lot more advocacy could be put into fighting efforts of voter suppression by the government because voting effects a lot more than just who ends up in office.”
