The purpose of this lab exercise is to introduce you to constructing a measurement instrument. For this exercise, you will construct and evaluate an attitude questionnaire. Follow the guidelines on survey writing in your textbook. Read through this lab and then start by first posting your survey topic information in Part 1 in the Discussion area for the week. See the instructions below and consult your textbook on how to write survey items.
Create your questionnaire using google forms or survey monkey. Note that survey monkey has a limit of 10 items for free surveys so you may want to use google forms or other platforms.
Include a consent form included in the survey (instructions below).
Include 1 item to assess the Independent Variable (see Discussion for the week).
Include 8-10 items assessing the Dependent Variable (see Discussion for the week and instructions below)
Please use the given Format of the Questionnaire .Instructions/Informed Consent:In addition to the questionnaire items, you will have to develop a set of instructions that generally explain how the questionnaire is set up and how to complete the specific types of items included in the questionnaire.Keep in mind that this is not a ‘real’ study and is only for classroom practice. However, you will still need to develop an appropriate informed consent form (see Figure 6-2 in the text for an example of an informed consent form, or use the attached form used at Keiser University and adapt it for this class:
IRB Online Consent 2022.docx
Online surveys typically contain the consent immediately before the survey (for example on how to do this see: https://help.surveymonkey.com/en/surveymonkey/create/consent-statements-privacy-notices/ ) The informed consent form must contain the following:
A statement that the survey is being conducted as a requirement for your Research Methods class.
A statement about the topic of your survey and the requirements for participation, including a statement indicating that participation is voluntary and that the participant is free to withdraw at any time.
A statement that all data will be held in confidence and that the data will be used only within the Research Methods class for educational purposes.
An acknowledgment that the participant understands the nature and purpose of the study, that he/she is at least 18 years old, and that the participant freely consents to participate.
Submit the link to your survey, including the informed consent form, as an invitation to this discussion area by EOD Thursday (Friday is acceptable if needed). Responses should indicate when you have completed the survey.NOTE. I want to stress to you that this is an exercise only so that you learn what is entailed in survey writing and understand that survey writing is complex and does not occur in one week – and the skills on how to do this are not learned in one week (typically you would take an entire course just on survey writing). It is important for you to understand this is an exercise and is unrelated to any future work you may do.
