Read the article published in Salon.com that is posted above “Secrets of the Muslim Bathroom”. What cultural norms does the author talk about that are seen as potentially strange or embarrassing to him in front of his fellow Americans? What are your thoughts on using water to clean after using the bathroom. Do you think you could adjust to using only water if there were no toilet tissue? Look at the story from a culturally relative stand point: why would it be so hard for the author to adjust to using just toilet tissue if he has only used water? When talking about relationships, why do you think the guys in the article think it would be difficult to marry a woman who does not have the same practice? What are some other practices that we see in other cultures that we find strange?

This week’s discussion assignment was exciting since these types of tests can be a valuable resource for students and professionals

This week’s discussion assignment was exciting since these types of tests can be a valuable resource for students and professionals. Taking these tests can provide insight and enhance self-reflection after reviewing the results. The emotional intelligence and mindfulness questionnaire provided insight into my awareness, understanding, and use of feelings and emotions in various circumstances. Although my overall sten score was deemed “competent,” I must admit I was slightly disappointed in my overall scores. Before taking this test, I assumed I would have some areas in the strong category. The “development” tips listed in the five domains are one way to improve my emotional intelligence and will be helpful at work and personally. One suggestion was to avoid doing things on autopilot and apply focus and awareness when performing tasks in the work environment. This is imperative when working as a professional in the forensic psychology field because paying attention to detail is a vital component of forensics. Another area that may benefit from my improvements is building support for decisions by listening to others’ views and feelings before planning. This is an essential aspect of forensic work because forensics requires teamwork to complete the job.
The CliftonStrengths test was slightly more challenging because there were questions that I needed clarification on. The insights I gained with this questionnaire were that I am considered an achiever, have balance, love learning, possess empathy, and am focus-driven. These results do not surprise me because I thrive on consistency and consider myself a planner. Understanding the results of these reports can improve self-awareness, which is essential for people to identify and connect emotions, thoughts, behaviors, beliefs, and values. As a graduate student in forensic psychology, having these insights is imperative to understand and prepare for a career in this field. Forensics can be emotionally draining, leading to burnout and chronic stress. Understanding my emotions and strengths allows me to develop empathy and compassion for others while keeping myself grounded. Having this insight can also help me better understand my limitations and triggers, helping me set boundaries while maintaining professionalism in the forensic environment.

The Clifton Strengths and Emotional Intelligence and Mindfulness assessments offered numerous insights about me

The Clifton Strengths and Emotional Intelligence and Mindfulness assessments offered numerous insights about me

The Clifton Strengths and Emotional Intelligence and Mindfulness assessments offered numerous insights about me. Both assessments identify my strengths and weaknesses. Learning and practicing both will increase my self-awareness and allow me to feel good about myself as I better accomplish my life goals of earning a master’s degree, moving forward in my career, and better myself. I will gain insight into the people surrounding me, allowing me to make better decisions, problem solve, provide a cohesive unit with my co-workers, and learn about myself.
I hope to gain knowledge of my emotional intelligence to communicate better, become open to feedback, consider others, their ideas and feelings, build teamwork, and make better decisions overall. I now have a new challenge to improve my self-awareness and emotional intelligence through the feedback of others who are a part of my life, whether friends, loved ones, or co-workers.
After researching emotional intelligence, I found an article that explains self-awareness and emotional intelligence: “Self-awareness helps us manage our emotions everywhere we go. Our emotional intelligence relies on our self-awareness to be aware of how we feel and clearly express our emotions. It also shows us how to practice “self-acceptance and acknowledge our emotions rather than push them away. (Perry,2022)

Week 2 Discussion: ETHICAL GUIDELINES FOR FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSIONALS
Hi Dr. Pruden and Classmates,
Part 1:
Description of at least one of the APA ethical guidelines.
One challenging APA ethical guideline from the “Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Ethics” is Principle E: Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity. This principle states that psychologists should respect the rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality, and self-determination, and should strive to eliminate biases, prejudices, and discriminatory practices.
This guideline can be challenging to comply with in forensic psychology when dealing with sensitive information, such as in court-ordered evaluations or assessments. Maintaining confidentiality while providing accurate and relevant information to the court can be complex, especially when there is a tension between protecting the client’s privacy and fulfilling legal obligations.
One solution to ensure compliance with this guideline is to establish clear boundaries and procedures for handling confidential information. Psychologists should obtain informed consent from clients regarding the limits of confidentiality and the potential disclosure of information. Additionally, psychologists should stay informed about relevant laws and regulations to navigate these complexities effectively (APA, 2017).

Part 2:
Description of your initial impressions.
My initial impressions of the ethics violations described in the California Board of Psychology publication are concerning and highlight the importance of ethical conduct in psychology practice. The violations, which include issues such as sexual misconduct, boundary violations, and breaches of confidentiality, demonstrate the serious consequences that can arise when ethical standards are not upheld. These violations not only harm the individuals directly involved but also erode public trust in the profession.
Ethical violations in psychology are particularly troubling due to the vulnerable nature of the client-practitioner relationship. Clients seek help and support from psychologists with the expectation that their well-being will be prioritized and that their personal information will be kept confidential. When these expectations are not met, it can have lasting negative effects on the individuals involved and can damage the reputation of the profession.
This highlights the importance of continuing education and training in ethical guidelines for psychologists. It is crucial for psychologists to stay informed about ethical standards and to regularly reflect on their own practice to ensure that they are meeting these standards. Additionally, maintaining open communication with clients and seeking supervision when faced with ethical dilemmas can help prevent violations and promote ethical conduct in psychology practice.
Explanation:
Learning about real-life ethics violations has had a profound impact on my views regarding my subspecialty of interest, victimology and victim services, as well as ethical guidelines in general. These violations underscore the critical importance of adhering to ethical standards and guidelines in all aspects of psychology practice, particularly in fields such as victimology where individuals may be particularly vulnerable.
Ethical violations by one psychologist can have far-reaching implications for the entire discipline. Such violations can erode public trust in psychology and create a negative perception of the profession as a whole. Clients and the public expect psychologists to act with integrity and to prioritize the well-being of those they serve. When these expectations are not met, it can undermine the credibility of the entire field.
As a future practitioner in victimology and victim services, I am committed to upholding the highest ethical standards in my practice. I recognize the importance of maintaining confidentiality, respecting the rights and dignity of clients, and avoiding conflicts of interest. By adhering to these principles, I can contribute to promoting trust in psychology and ensuring the well-being of those I serve.

There are many ethical guidelines outlined in a psychologist’s code of conduct, but the one that stuck out to me as being maybe one of the more difficult ones to adhere to would be conflict of interest. A conflict of interest is simple having a deep connection – whether that be financially, personally, etc., – to a situation that would impair your ability to view the situation as objectively as possible (APA, 2017). This could be difficult because I personally would find it very hard to step away from something if I had a personal connection to the situation. For example, if it were one of my siblings or my parents, it would be hard to view the situation objectively and I would more than likely need step back from it.
Learning how to view things objectively, especially in the field of forensic psychology, is extremely important. To help myself if I were to have a conflict of interest, the first thing I would have to learn to do is walk away. We can all agree that walking away from something that means a lot to you is one of the hardest things to do. If I can master this, though, it will be better for the situation and my career in the long run.

Part 2:
My first thought reading through the newsletter was shock and disgust. In the Winter ’24 edition, they spoke about someone who had not only sexually abused their client (A), but also allowed another client (B) of theirs to sit in on the session and even participate – all without the client’s consent (A). It is shocking that someone could even be this careless to begin with, but we all came into this profession for the same reason: we want to help people. We are unable to help people if we do not have their best interests at heart, and it saddens me that there are still people out there who will take advantage of someone when given the opportunity.
Knowing that there are people out there who are still like this and learning about these real-life situations will better help prepare me not only to steer clear of any of those violations, but also to understand the fears and anxiety that come along with trying to open up to a mental health professional. Unless you are in a situation like the one I mentioned previously, it is hard to fully grasp just how much of a traumatic experience this person went through. Using that and knowing how to talk people through their anxieties will also help any issues of perception that may have been caused by someone else’s violations.
