Instructions:
Students are expected to demonstrate a familiarity with the assigned material for the week by answering the analysis questions thoughtfully and thoroughly, while incorporating direct textual evidence into the response to support their points. Direct textual evidence is a requirement for this assignment. This means using direct quotes from the assigned reading for the week (with a page citation for each) to support any all and interpretive claims. These quotes should be explained and contextualized (that is, explain what the quote means and show how it supports the claims you are making). Please make sure to fully answer every part of the question completely and thoroughly. The minimum length is two complete paragraphs of at least 5 sentences each (so ten sentences total).
Question:
Explain what Barber means by “thin democracy” and how it differs from “strong democracy.” How would strong democracy address or solve the problems and issues that exist with thin democracy? Make sure to be specific in your response.

Purpose: 1. Become better informed about the politics of campaigns and elections. 2. To familiarize you with the candidates who seek the presidency and the issues they face. 3. To become better acquainted with research tools and resources available.
Assignment: 1500 word minimum research paper on a single candidate (winner or loser – not both) for a recent presidential election, 1980-2020 ( max 12 font, Arial or Times New Roman font, remember that references do not count toward your page count nor does non-standard bizarre extra spacing at the top, your name and the title will suffice). Submitting less than the minimum 1500 word length requirement is not college work and should be avoided (i.e. severe penalties will apply).  Please submit your document as a word document or simple text file (no apple pages files, PDF files, or google doc links please – both of those programs allow you to save/download papers as a word document).  Please submit word (.docx) files.
You must choose from these candidates:
1980 – Jimmy Carter (D), Ronald Reagan (R)
1984 – Ronald Reagan (R), Walter Mondale (D)
1988 – George H.W. Bush (R), Michael Dukakis (D)

Instructions: The paper must analyze the candidates’ views on key issues, how the campaign was waged (i.e. was there a vicious ad campaign?), what strategies/tactics did he employ, why one candidates would have received your vote, why this candidate was or should have been elected the president, where did the candidate stand in the polls during the campaign, was he a long-shot or the favorite to win? A minimum of ten sources are required. All internet sources must be from reputable sites. Newspaper sites, major news network sites, and dot orgs are the only acceptable sources for internet sources. Please do not use your friends blog, myspace page, facebook, twitter account or JoeShmoe’sPoliticsPage.com. You may use the candidate’s official site as one source (all recent former presidents have Presidential libraries with good web sites). Sources must be documented via a bibliography (works cited) with the name of the article, publication name, publication date, website address, and page number if applicable. You are required to document your sources via full MLA, or APA bibliographical citations (other citation standards can be used but must be cleared with me first). If you are not familiar with how to cite bibliographical citations in MLA or APA format, the writing center can assist you through the process.
Advice: Start early and do not procrastinate. This assignment is not hard but will take some time to complete. Take advantage of the writing center.  Students that take their paper drafts to them for help always receive higher grades on this assignment.
This research paper will consist of your analysis of the issues and candidates and it is therefore crucially important that you use your own words and not “borrow” words from others.  Usage of AI tools is not permitted on this assignment.  Once submitted your paper will be processed through a system to check for plagiarism and AI.  I take plagiarism very seriously and warn you not to attempt such a deception. This is supposed to be a fun assignment where you write about a candidate you like, please don’t be disrespectful to me and attempt to cheat on it.  The consequences of doing so are not fun and are potentially severe (see student code of conduct).

What constitutes an appropriate role for the judiciary? Some people argue that courts have become too powerful and that judges legislate from the bench. What does it mean for a court to be activist? What does it mean for a court to show judicial restraint? Although conservatives have long complained about the activism of liberal justices and judges, in recent years liberals have pointed out that conservative judges and justices are now more likely to overturn precedents and question the power of elected institutions of government. Conservatives counter by saying they are simply returning to an older precedent that had been ignored by liberals. If both liberals and conservatives engage in judicial activism, what is the role of the concept of “activism” (perhaps judicial activism is just a term used to describe a court decision you disagree with)?

Electoral process in Authoritarian Regimes: ‘The Dictator’s Dilemma’
Dear Students:
This is a qualitative research assignment ‘case study’, write an executive summary examining your critical thinking by comparing electoral process in Authoritarian regimes. Consider the ‘Dictator’s Dilemma for Governing’ and ‘Regime Change’ for nations that have been under Communism, Dictatorship or Theocratic rule with authoritarian rule. Describe how the ‘electoral process’ works and affects the governing regime rule.
Case Study: N. Korea vs Iran
Mission: See Module III Supplemental Links, Textbook and utilize online resources to complete this assignment/case study. Please evaluate and define the institutional principles of one Case Study: “N. Korea vs Iran” or “China vs Russia” as Regimes with electoral process. Through your own critical and comprehensive analysis you can make a comparison and detect the similarities and differences that these two nations have as Authoritarian regimes and reflecting on the ‘Dictator’s Dilemma’.
Guidelines to Consider for your Research:
Why has Putin preserved the trappings of democracy rather than creating a purely authoritarian regime? Can you use the theories of why dictators allow institutions to survive to explain Putin’s actions? What do recent trends suggest for the future stability and success of Putin’s regime?
Recent trends have suggested that the quasi-democratic elements of Iran’s governing institutions are relatively weak. Nonetheless, how might they help the top Iranian leadership overcome the dictator’s dilemma that all authoritarian regimes face? What does Iran’s history suggest about the relative importance of repression, co-optation, and legitimacy for the survival of authoritarian regimes? Can the theories that explain the durability of electoral authoritarian regimes be applied to Iran’s theocratic regime? How much do they help us explain Iran?
What does China’s succession system suggest about the relationship between personal power, succession, and regime survival in authoritarian regimes? The Chinese government has allowed participation and criticism at the local level in various ways but repressed it firmly at the national level. Can you use the idea of the dictator’s dilemma to explain this pattern of behavior? How can the theories of authoritarian rule outlined earlier in the chapter be used to explain the durability of China’s regime?
Considering the Dynastic Dictatorship of North Korea and Supreme Leadership, how does the electoral process within the regime functions and represents the people? What’s the Dictator’s Dilemma for N. Korea?

Once you have completed Unit 3, write a critical commentary on a hotly contested public policy issue currently being debated in the media or in society at large. Identify a book, movie, journal article, podcast, or video from a reputable source that addresses this issue, and review this piece. Your commentary on the piece must focus on one recent policy issue related to any one of the main themes discussed in Section 1: democracy, citizenship, employment, immigration, feminism, resource dependence, the climate crisis, etc.
Start by writing a brief summary (two pages maximum, or approximately 500 words) of the main issues or arguments from the piece you picked, and then relate these back to the key themes and concepts addressed in the assigned readings of the units in Section 1.
Your commentary must answer the following questions:
What major arguments are put forward in this book, movie, article, podcast, or video?
What made you pick this particular piece?
How does it relate to the assigned readings?
What are the strengths and limitations of the arguments put forward in the piece?
Is this public policy issue relevant to your own life?
What did you learn from this exercise?
Your essay need not take the form of a formal book review, but it must answer all parts of the assignment.
Provide definitions of the key concepts and theories relevant for your analysis from the readings in the course. Support your arguments with empirical and theoretical evidence. Illustrate major points with specific examples and/or figures obtained from scholarly sources. If you want to use additional sources that are not in the course reading list, confine your research to academic sources and reputable popular publications (of the sort included in the readings for this course). Note that Wikipedia will not be accepted as an academic source. Consult the AU Library’s Internet Searching guide  to learn what to look for when using online resources.
You must provide complete in-text citations and bibliographic references for all sources that you quote, summarize, or paraphrase in your commentary. Use a standard citation style (Chicago, MLA, APA, etc.) consistently and correctly.
Your assignment must be typed, double-spaced, 1,500–2,000 words in length, and carefully proof-read.
