The (slightly revised) criteria is a self-chosen topic within the course framework – max. 8 normal pages + bibliography, frontpage etc.
I would suggest a structure like:
Introduction incl. RQ
Theoretical framework (you can use both course texts and other texts)
Case descriiption
Analysis
Conclusion
An example – Sheffield early took an identity as a sanctuary city. Possible RQs: What characterizes the policy framework of Sheffield? Who are the involved actors and stakeholders? How does Sheffield’s polices compare to national policies?
Possible literature – texts on sanctuary and solidarity cities (Harald Bauder, Vicky Squire, Jonathan Darling, Martin & Óscar etc.)
Best of luck

The first discussion paper of the semester will be on the assigned reading from James Fallows, “How the World Works”. This writing assignment will not require that you use any other outside sources; all questions may be sufficiently answered by referencing the article. In a three to five page paper, double spaced with 12 point font and 1 inch margins, answer all parts of each of the following questions; incomplete answers will not receive full credit.
According to Fallows, which 3 thinkers have most influenced the Western worldview and what were the contributions of each? Which thinker/contribution most frequently diverges from the non-Western worldview?
What is the primary difference between the economic theories of Adam Smith and Friedrich List as regards what is consumed vs. what is produced? According to List, why is this distinction important?
In the Anglo-American theory, what is the proper role and relationship of government to the market, society and individuals, and which is given priority? How does the relationship between free trade and political power differ between the Anglo and German schools? Explain in depth and provide examples.
In your opinion, does the United States still embrace Smith’s view or has it pivoted to List, and why do you believe it has adopted this position? Provide a thorough explanation for your reasoning and provide modern examples.

Text and notes should conform to The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. Simple citations should appear in-text using the author-date system described in chapter 15 of CMS and refer to a bibliography that appears at the end of the manuscriipt. Bibliographies should not include material beyond what is cited in the article. Longer notes should appear as footnotes and should also be double-spaced in 12-point font; any citations in such notes should use the same style as in-text citations. All identifying information should be removed from the manuscriipt. Manuscriipts that do not meet the submission standards will be returned to the author(s) for correction before being considered.
The topic for this research will revolve around questions such as the legitimacy of Vladimir Putin’s presidential regime. Tie in theoretically the concept of religion in Russia, the importance of religion, and how the religious backing behind Putin’s regime can greatly aid in the domestic legitimization of his regime. Potentially explore further with concepts such as is Putin’s legitimacy, threatened by international organizations and ngos because they can reduce his reputational level (reputational cascades) and incur a lot of audience costs by sanctioning him, or speaking out against him? But at that point what even is legitimacy? how influential does these outside organizations be and how can Russian orthodox church potentially help mitigate the effects caused by these outside organizations? Who is the leviathan of international politics? Of the international world order? Regardless, this research project should show a clear proficiency in political theory and be made with similar professionalism as if it would be submitted to an academic journal, meaning an introduction, thesis statement, literature review, discussion, counter arguments, conclusions, and references.
