Peculiarities Of Personality Formation

Each individual human has a unique thing about them that makes them who they are. Although individuals have different physical characteristics that may set them apart from the rest of the population, it can be argued that there is a more important factor that makes individuals unique from others: personality.

Personality is an individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting. Everyone has a distinct personality that sets them apart from everyone else. Our personality develops due to our efforts to deal with conflicts between our biological impulses and social restraints. The mind is seen as an iceberg, most of it is mostly hidden and lives in the unconscious mind. According to Freud, he believed that personality formed during the first few years of life that are divided into psychosexual stages. These stages include, oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital.

In order to evaluate someone’s personality projective tests are used to understand the form of the unconscious mind. The most common projective test that is used is the Rorschach inkblot test. This test seeks to identify someone’s inner feeling by analyzing their interpretations of the blots. According to The Rorschach Inkblot Test: An interpretive guide for clinicians, Choca asserts that the test was used to discover what a practitioner what to know about a person, he also downplays the blots as communication of perceptions. Another test that is used is the thematic apperception test (TAT). This test was developed by Henry Murray in 1943 and is used for people to express their inner feelings about interests through stories they make up about ambiguous scenes. The TAT test is used to measure deeper layers of someone’s personality. (Dhar & Mishra, 2014) TAT is a projective test that is used to estimate a person’s patterns of attitudes, deliberation, observational capacity, and emotional responses to uncertain test materials. During the test the patient is shown a set of picture cards and is asked to create a story based on them, emotional responses should be described to determine personality traits. The Meyers-Briggs Type indicator is another test that is bases on Jung’s sequence of four cognitive functions, they determine that personality can be measured on four continuums. Those include extroversion/introversion, sensation/intuition, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. Everyone has all these characteristics to a greater or lesser degree. Jung and Myers believed that each person has certain inborn characteristics. (Hubbell, 1991). Although projective tests are used critics argue that they lack reliability and validity.

Through modern research in evaluating the psychoanalytic perspective, research has shown that personality develops throughout life and is not completed during childhood. Freud also discussed how peer influence has a major impact on an individual just as much if not more than parental influence. This theory rests on the repression of painful experiences into the unconscious mind. Painful experiences play a hug role in early childhood, and the majority of children are unable to repress those painful experiences into their unconscious mind. With the unconscious mind, there may be other reasons for dreams besides wish fulfillment.

Maslow proposed that we as individuals are motivated by the hierarchy of needs. It begins with physiological needs, as we try to reach the state of self-actualization which helps fulfill our potential. Self-actualization refers to the need for personal growth and development that is present and exists throughout someone’s life (Tripathi & Moakumla, 2018). Individuals search for higher needs when their lower level needs are fulfilled. The highest level of needs can only be reached by individuals that are mentally strong and practice self-actualization in a healthy manner. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory that is made to try to understand the motivational instinct in humans. Humans are driven and stimulated to achieve certain needs and some needs are more important as others. Once one level is achieved the next level activates and it stimulates the human instincts to reach those next needs. Carl rogers also believed in these needs and self-actualization tendencies. He came up with unconditional positive regard which is an attitude of acceptance of others despite their failing. When assessing personality, Rogers asked people to describe themselves as they would like to be seen and as they actually are, this helps explain self-concept, which refers to all the thoughts and feelings about ourselves. These thoughts and feelings include many things. A few of these things are beliefs about the individual and how others respond to those beliefs and actions.

A person’s personality is composed of a unique constellation of durable dispositions and consistent way of behaving, or traits, which constitutes that person’s personality. Each personality is made up of multiple traits. Each personality has five major factors that all relate to each other in some way: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. One of these factors is openness. Openness simply means one’s attitude and responses to a huge variety of stimuli. These could include how a person responds to someone else’s beliefs and ideas. The second factor that determines a personality is conscientiousness. Conscientiousness refers to a person’s ability to plan. Different people have different ways of accomplishing tasks or going about day to day life. A person might be a very thorough planner and stick to his schedule accordingly whereas on the other end of the spectrum another individual might be completely spontaneous and adventurous. Neither one of these is right or wrong, which makes people across the world have a wide variety of personalities that can all be brought back to the same basic principles. The next factor is extraversion. This is one of the more common factors. While taking personality determining tests such as the Myers-Briggs assessments, the number one distinguishing factor of one’s personality is whether or not the individual is extraverted or introverted. Extraverted individuals thrive off of social settings. These individuals tend to find their energy in settings where many people are present, and many stimuli are being presented. One the opposite side of this, introverted people thrive in settings where they can find quietness and have time to themselves. However, introverted people do not always like to be by themselves contrary to popular belief. Highly social settings just tend to drain them more than add energy to their lives. The next factor that determines a personality is agreeableness. Agreeableness is a person’s ability to show kindness and selflessness to others. For example, some people have very giving and kind personalities that make them easy to get along with. On the other hand, other people with different personalities might come off as rude and selfish. The last factor that determines personalities is neuroticism. This refers to a person’s inclination to be anxious or nervous. There isn’t much to this specific factor besides making each individual more inclined to worry and be anxious about more things than those with different personalities. Although these all determine a person’s personality, none of these are positive or negative traits. Just because two people are different, their personality traits make them who they are.

In conclusion, each and every person that is alive today has a personality unique to the individual. Although two people are alike, they are not identical when it comes to personality. Through research and studies, personality is said to develop in the early stages of life when an individual begins to mature (psychosexual stages). However, personality does not stop developing in childhood years; personality development continues into adulthood. There are many tests that are used to determine personality such as the Rorschach inkblot test and the Myers-Briggs tests as well. Personality is also determined by many different factors that are all related to each other in one way or the other. An individual’s personality is what makes him/her unique; the more we understand personality, the more we are able to understand the human race in general.

Self-Awareness And Self-Development

INTRODUCTION

This assignment discusses and explains how self-awareness and self-development are important and how they will help me to fulfil my role as a successful manager in the future. It also explains the qualities of a good manager that u want to build in yourself by way of continuous self-development and two critical incidents one from residential week and other from my work and also discusses my major strengths and weaknesses and also discloses areas of personal development as a (future) manager.

SELF-AWARENESS

Self-awareness is knowing and being aware of our self and our identity, including our strengths, weaknesses, our views & thoughts, feeling, likings & disliking, emotions. Self-awareness is nothing but mindfulness of all our traits.

According to Daniel Goleman, 1946 it is highly significant to understand that self-awareness isn’t just concerning of what we perceive or see about ourselves further more how we watch and screen our own inner self or our identity. (Goleman, Daneil Goleman, 2012)

Psychologist Daniel Goleman, 1995 has proposed an increasingly well-known meaning of self-awareness in his popular book ‘Emotional Intelligence’, as ‘knowing one’s inward states, inclination, resources and instincts”. His statement puts further accentuation to watch our inner self, own thoughts and feelings as they occur. (Goleman, 1995)

Moreover, self-awareness in other words is mindfulness, of knowing and learning regarding our own selves. It mainly characterised into two types, the first one is internal self-awareness which is our own values, passion, aspirations, strengths and weaknesses and its impact on others. And the second category is external self-awareness, means understanding how other people view us.

According to Baron and Byrne (1991) self-awareness is special type of mental presentation that consists of all knowledge we possess about ourselves. Thus information is organised and processed in depth. Thus its final outcome is readily available to remember. Self-awareness enhances lives in few different and helpful ways.

Self-Awareness is having a clear perception of our own personality which includes thoughts, convictions, motivation, feelings, strengths, and weaknesses. Self-Awareness enables us to converse and comprehend other individuals, how they see and judge us, our attitude and our reactions to them at the time. Self-awareness is a leading factor in making progress in life and is one of the key components of Emotional Intelligence.

Envisioning how others see you, assessing yourself and your activities as indicated by aggregate convictions and qualities and thinking about how others assess you. (Baumeister (2005)).

CONTINUOUS SELF-DEVELOPMENT

According to Ostun A, Self-development is nothing but self-advancement.it can be characterised as picking up data required in an individual’s working life, gaining new data and abilities open to new change, learning for learning and keeping this information for future purpose.

it is the enhancement of one’s learning, status, or character by one’s very own endeavours. It’s simply the journey or cycle to improve in any and each aspect of life (Clear, 2018).it is a continuous process, an upward winding. By assuming responsibility of our advancement, we can achieve our maximum capacity and push ahead to accomplish what we need. Self- development implies numerous things in various settings of our life, our objectives and our desire. It’s about creating explicit characteristics and skills, enhancing performance in career, propelling profession, accomplishing maximum capacity as an individual.

The process of self-development is a lifelong acquiring knowledge and learning process, it is deeply rooted process. Whenever we find it is necessary to adapt and improve new skills. Until we develop those skills self-development process runs again and again until the set of objectives are reached. (Armstrong, M., 2011, p. 126)

Self-development is the better version of us.it is the process to strive to better ourselves to grow our self-confident and finally to develop ourself.it is an extremely important process since it offers people, a chance to gain some viewpoint and feedback about our lives. All the time, when we settle on a choice, we keep on living the results of that choice, giving careful consideration to whether we might be cheerful or not. Self-improvement is a procedure whereby people assess their own lives, watch the self-improvement they have encountered, and choose whether they are fulfilled or not. (Stine, 2018)

HOW SELF-AWARENESS AND CONTINUOUS SELF-DEVELOPMENT WILL HELP YOU TO FULFIL YOUR ROLE AS A SUCCESSFUL LEADER OR MANAGER IN THE FUTURE

To be a successful manager must have all qualities listed:

  • a) Honesty, loyalty and commitment are important qualities that must be present in all managers.
  • b) He/she must have ability to direct and guide his subordinates.
  • c) He/she must good command over language means strong communication skills.
  • d) Manager should be goal and results oriented.
  • e) Delegation of authority and responsibility when needed
  • f) Motivating employees, decision making
  • g) Empathy towards his fellow beings
  • h) Taking up innovation and creativity
  • i) Optimistic and positive attitude
  • j) Good listener and best influencer
  • k) Work for “we” not” I” and manage by trust ,not by fear.

To be a successful manager, self-awareness and continuous development is very important. So as to lead in life or in company, a manager needs to know their strengths and weaknesses. This will enable them to act decisively, promptly and with confidence, it helps manager to how to take decision, when to take and what will be the upcoming results and act accordingly to that. Good management practice requires the manager to use all resources and skills in proper allocated manner to get the best advantage of the organisation when everyone is acknowledged in by way of giving and taking feedback, the organisation can be harmonious and run in most efficient manner.

I participated for a residential weekend as a part of my masters’ programme and during this weekend I engaged for a team activity named PYRAMID task. It was divided into two groups. The objective of this task was to build the pyramid from only bottom to top with the help of blocks. I was a little anxious of this task because I wasn’t able to understand exactly what to do, as in group there was no proper planning of actions and sequential order to follow by group members. We could only attempt the task but could not do it successfully. And as a team we were so poor we did not have proper communication or conversation to do task. The only instructor was allowed to speak giving only one instruction. as there was no efficient planning we do not have appropriate roles to play according to the task

According to The Belbin toolkit to be successful in team performance the role played by each member is important. The results showed that my best preferred role is that team worker, implementer and coordinator. Even though I’m little bit dependable person but when working in team helps me to gain cultural awareness and feedback received from the group members helped me to get knowledge of area I’m lagging, during the task I was little bit in hurry to finish the task that let confused us. I’m happy we could attempt the task because of team, i coordinated with the team members but if proper planning was done before the task we could have been successful in completion of task. But if working in future as a manager I’ll remember to first make blue print of action and then implementation because whole process comes to standstill if there is no proper planning . and I also consider that to be successful as a manager we should be composed cool and calm during task also.

From this critical incident I came to know my strength and weakness with the help of feedback given by friends and team members. Feedback provided helped me to improve my weakness areas. To be successful as a manager i should overcome with those weaknesses . firstly involving into group helped me to know the unknown persons, how to behave in groups ,how planning is necessary before doing any task , how team work leads to success, communication and conversation are so important and leading ladder towards mission completion, how proper planning leads to take correct decisions at correct time. I really learned the importance of planning and importance of effective implementation of plans.

It was the time when my teaching career began and it was the last moment that I got the seat to pursue my career in teaching in bachelors. It was actually a professional as well as learnings and teaching platform. It started with great difficulty as I got seat very late I missed so many sessions of important introductory classes and there started with presentation of model projects and completion of tasks and assignments. I could do assignments with the help of guide given to us but that it was an surprising day as a group we have to present dramas with all real characters on dais. Initially I could not understand the topic and its concept.

This was highly critical situation where I’m not able to understand what, how to do.as I was so tensed that my palm was sweating and hands were shivering when I think about task. That time I felt stressed and panicked and was struggling to get self-confidence. But we were in group the time was allotted and when we sat in group discussed the task I felt little bit relaxed and could really think on topic. Then I convinced myself and motivated myself that I have to it by any cause and convinced group that we will not only attempt the task but we will do the best out of us. Thus my self-esteem and self-motivation arouse which improved my focus.

However we finished the task later we as a group collected judgement and feedback from peers as well as from mentors. My work and efforts have been approved. The mentors really liked the concept of drama and I couldn’t believe that I could do that so good in group as we have collected feedback and my feedback on that role was so surprising everyone has appreciated the kind of role I played during task and could convey the message with motto. It was the day when I inculcated motivation within myself that “I can do it”. It is because of self-learning and continuous development that enhanced confidence which was hiding inside me. Thus this helped me in I confrontation of situation with the the help of proper planning and implementation of ideas and it has happened because of feedback collected it has in return gave courage to cope with the situations.

This self-analysis toolkit helped me analyses my personal development and made me aware about the knowledge, I found a huge improvement in my core abilities understanding and expressing the views properly , confrontation without fear, realised the feeling of self-confidence , facing the uncertain situation or copying with the situation with smile and courage. Moreover, my confidence geared up I learned that I can sufficiently manage the workplace and stop things from getting worsen. I became the greatest version of myself by focusing and bringing out my strength, efforts to make things done at correct time. Overcoming the weakness having of stage fear and phobia of facing people, copying with the stress. Furthermore, I felt accomplishing more than I used to and learned that I can now perform or do things that previously were difficult for me. Therefore, I will assess this critical incident has acknowledged me to know significantly further things about me which I wasn’t acquainted with. I will do my best now and become better than the previous version of me – and then apply this goal every single day. The initial experience indicate that proper planning , goal setting communicating with new people, self-motivation and feedback would be important design components in effort to develop responsible behaviour with work team (Koch,1979)

Self-confidence is the fundamental basis for anything you do or to become better. A manager is the one who makes decisions appropriately, accurately .Confidence is driving force which builds our character also leads to prosperity in life. Be positive, supportive and encouraging thoughts and actions into the workplace. Focus much on feedback properly. Pay attention to everything you take as a weakness, a fear and work on it and setback. Then, challenge them.to work with determination, hard work, and commitment. Handle situation with positive way or optimistic manner and will be ready to face all kind of situations may be certain or not and will be Confident in communicating. I must have a trust on ourselves and confident in my abilities. Furthermore, I will use my learning to motivate, encourage, and appreciate the task done and as a manager rewards them. Always routinely collect feedback because feedback again will be the source to get area of lacking and improvement needed.

Strengths that emerged from my self-analysis

A pattern I have noticed throughout my career of study and work is that I am sincere ,honest and also dedicated towards work .the result which I received from feedback toolkit is that my co-workers and colleagues also appreciated my work and appreciated the contribution I made towards activity by expressing liking and giving positive feedback.

Weaknesses that emerged from my self-analysis

As I don’t get easily understand the circumstances or situations, I always require the assistance and guidance from my friends and superiors at work or study. I did the task properly when one of my friend’s explained the task twice. It means that I lack in promptness in understanding the question.

Personal development as a (future) manager:

Three areas of personal development that I would like to work in future as a manager is

  • a) Self-regulation i.e. flexibility and adaptability in managing change,
  • b) Communication skills.

I as a manger should have self-regulations which understand the importance of change and how to fit according to change. I must try to become more flexible according to situations arrived. I should be adapt to be both introvert and extrovert kind nature. (Personal Development Skills for Leaders & Professionals, 2017).

Communication skills are so important to lead a conversation; manger should be clear with speech, voice, clear description of idea and should be specific of whatever he is delivering at his workplace (Sergeev, 2017). I had a huge improvement in my communication skills while working with teams now able to converse manage, explaining things right, being available or face storms coming across. Thus breaking down communication barriers which ultimately improve self-confidence.

CONCLUSION

This assignment concludes that self-awareness and continuous self-development are vital for a person to become a successful manager in future. Also states that self-awareness and continuous self-development is fundamental tool for managers and leaders as well. Moreover, I will in future overcome my weakness by developing the self-confidence which will be very useful in every aspect of life and I will use my learnings by motivating and, makes others around feel significant and encouraging them by giving good feedbacks. Overall, I will strive to be better person in every aspect by learning from my “weakness and mistakes”.

How Soccer Has Helped Me To Grow

Throughout my middle school and highschool I’ve never been one of the kids you would see as “popular”, the hardest part about it is that I don’t see myself as an introvert, the main problem ive had with making friends is that I don’t fit into a certain group of people, and when I do finally find a group im talked to and “accepted” but never invited to anything, Ive heard its a normal problem with teens my age, but it’s still a really rough patch to go throw, I often come home angry, rude, and sad for no reason since throughout the day I see kids hanging out in the lunch rooms with giant groups and feeling like I don’t fit in.

However, ive found a way to make a few new friends and that is by soccer. Soccer has helped me since in sports, no one cares about your wealth, popularity status or anything else but two things, your ability to work in a team environment, and skill. The sport has been a great way for me to release my frustration and chaos of my daily life, and the great thing is the only effect of releasing all of my built up stress is what makes me play better.

Every pre game warmup I would take every little thing that bothered me throughout the day and turning it into energy that would motivate me to play even stronger that game. The rougher the day the better I would play. I remember one game in specific against our rival Tigard, where I was having a really sucky day, my stepdad and I were arguing earlier in the morning, and I was getting teased most of the day at school. I didn’t let any of that affect me though, I went out on that field as a left back, and I was a “wall”, I didn’t let a player go through me and if they tried, I would stop them. I played so hard that game that by the end I was so mentally and physically drained but at the same time felt amazing. That bad day turned out to make me have one of the best games I’ve played in to this day.

Another reason why I love soccer is its helped me connect with some people that share interests with me at school. Not only are they really cool to hang out with, but there are genuinely nice people who before we ment were “floaters” just like me. Playing soccer has also helped me bond with my parents. My stepdad always shows up to my games if he doesn’t have a shift the day, and my mom is happy to see me socializing with other kids and being off my electronics. Soccer has also helped me find my limits, but at the same time to push myself to do better in not only sports but in school.

Throughout my life I’ve struggled with the effect of being an athlete with only one lung. When I first got it removed the doctors didn’t think i would make it and if I did, I probably wouldn’t be able to be athletic, but ive never let that hold me down and I use that knowledge to push me further, since I know I got lucky, and ended up as much worse and at the least never be able to play a sport. My coaches throughout my life have mentored me and helped me build a small family and showed me how to balance my academic work with my passion. For this I am grateful, and know how I am lucky that I have something in my life that not only has helped me build relationships and family, but also helping me realize what it really means to drive for a goal and passion you really love.

Yoga in the development of ‘Self’ can play a very important role. Through yogic asana, pranayama and meditation the body, mind, vital force and intellect are properly nurtured which results in healthy development. It enhances self esteem, self confidence and self respect.

Everybody feels that he or she should become a happy and successful person. Our happiness and success depends on the pattern of our attitude, thinking and behavior. Yoga assures us that our dream can be fulfilled provided we acquire certain healthy attitudes and habits of thinking and living.

Many great persons in the world fought against physical disabilities and adverse circumstances and became successful. Every one of us is gifted in some way or the other. Let us find out our own gift. It may not be academic intelligence; it may be social or other type of intelligence. We may not be good with books but we may be very good with machines, which is equally valuable. We may have a potential to become a singer, a painter or a stage-actor. Let us have a goal and take steps to move towards it. Yogic techniques make our body, mind and intellect strong. We become competent to take decisions. Let us train the body first: Yogasanas shake off our lethargy and idleness. They bring fresh vigor to our body. They free us from tensions and diseases, so that we can focus our attention totally on our goal.

How do we train the body? Let us take care of our food. Let us avoid eating very less or eating unnecessarily. Select the food that agrees with us and brings harmony to our body. Digestion of food, its assimilation in the body and excretion of unwanted stuff, must be regular. Rest and proper sleep is also necessary to keep our body fit. Let us train our mind: Self-education is very important in Yoga. If we train our mind to become strong, it will be strong. If we let it be weak like a pampered child, it will become weak and brittle. It would collapse at the smallest shock. Let us avoid self-pity because it makes us weak. Let us avoid all kinds of negative thoughts like envy, jealousy and narrow-mindedness. Let us train our intellect: If we don’t give challenging work to our intellect, it gets rusted; it loses its capacity to do mighty things. In fact we do not use our brain to the fullest extent. If the brain does not get enough exercise, it gets tired easily. Seeing dreams and exerting all our energies to fulfill those makes our intellect strong. We can resolve ourselves in our respective sector that whatever we do, it will be of great quality. May it be taught or typed, plumbed or fitted. Yoga can train the body and mind for self-development to attain excellence and action skills.

Why are we working? Why are we working? Two explanations exist: one is noticeable. You’re working because you’re getting cash. The second one is unseen. You operate because you like working, because it improves your self-respect, because individuals value you, because you are proud to have accountability and to try your utmost to cope with the occasion.

Physical dimension is related to our body. It means that all organs and systems of our body should be properly developed and functions. It implies a healthy body without any disease. There is a series of asanas and pranayamas which help to improve the functioning of the body.

Yoga and Emotional Dimension of Personality

Yogic practices are effective for development of emotional dimension related to our feelings, attitudes and emotions. There are two kinds of emotions: positive and negative. For example love, kindness is positive emotions, while anger and fear (exam phobia) are Personality Development Similarly, our feelings and attitudes may be positive and negative. For emotional development, positive feelings, attitudes and emotions should be developed and negative ones should be controlled, as the negative attitudes and emotions work as a mental block for the development of personality. Yoga plays a critical role in development of positive emotions. It brings emotional stability. It helps to control negative emotions. Yogic practices such as yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara and meditation help in emotional management. For example, the principle of non-violence will protect us from negative emotions and develop positive feelings of love and kindness. Similarly, other principles of yama and niyama will help to develop positive emotions and attitudes in our personal and social life and therefore help in the management of emotions.

Intellectual development is related to the development of our mental abilities and processes such as critical thinking, memory, perception, decision making, imagination, creativity, etc. Development of this dimension is very important as it enables us to learn new things and acquire knowledge and skills. Yogic practices such as asana, pranayama, dharana, dhyana (meditation) help to develop concentration, memory and thereby help in intellectual development.

Yoga and Social Dimension of Personality

Primary socialization, probably the most important aspect of the personality development takes place during infancy, usually within the family. By responding to the approval and disapproval of parents and grandparents and imitating their examples, the child learns the language and many of the basic behavior patterns of her/his society. The process of socialisation is not limited to childhood, but continues throughout life and teaches the growing child and adolescent about the norms and rules of the society in which she/he lives. Some key elements of this process include respect for others, listening carefully to other persons, being interested in them, and voicing your thoughts and feelings politely, honestly and clearly so that you can be easily heard and understood. This dimension is related to the development of values. It is also concerned with self-actualization which is related to recognizing one’s potential and developing them to the maximum. Each day our children arrive at the doors of our classrooms with many challenges that serve as barriers to their success as learners. These children are poor; they are English-language learners and English-language speakers; they are White, Hispanic, African American, and Asian; they are urban, suburban and rural. However, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or the extent of their poverty or wealth, the reality is that many of them lack personal, social and emotional skills. As educators social-emotional competence is crucial for promoting a positive learning environment. Socially and emotionally competent educators set the tone for the classroom by developing strong, supportive and encouraging relationships with their children. Social-emotional competence provides the necessary skills for educators to effectively manage their classroom, and successfully implement social and emotional learning. Therefore, when we as educators lack the resources to effectively manage the social and emotional challenge within our classroom, children begin to show lower levels of on-task behavior and performance.

For this assignment, when completing the Self-Assessing Social and Emotional Instruction and Competencies tool, the social and emotional competency I scored the highest was in Instructional Interactions. Quality instructional interactions are crucial for children’s learning and development. Children benefit when we as educators engage in stimulating interactions that support their learning and are emotionally supportive. When we experience mastery over social and emotional challenges, teaching becomes more enjoyable. Self-awareness is important and that is something that has influenced my score within this area. Helping children with emotional and behavioral disabilities begins with understanding ourselves. We must develop effective strategies for regularly monitoring and managing our own stress in order to manage relationships with others. As an educator there are times, I need a safe place to express my feelings and frustration and recharge those emotional batteries. We must recognize emotions, emotional patterns, and tendencies and know how to generate and use emotions such as joy and enthusiasm to motivate learning in ourselves and others. We must be culturally sensitive, understand that others nay have different perspectives than we do. We must have a realistic understanding of our capabilities and recognize our emotional strengths and weakness. Therefore, as educators we must regulate our emotions in healthy ways in order to facilitate positive classroom outcomes.

All interactions we as educators have with children can influence how they learn, grow and feel about themselves. Social interactions are one of the most important factors for the development of everybody, from young children to the elderly. After completing the self assessing tool for teachers, I was shocked to see that I scored the lowest within this area. Social interactions are how we act and react to those around us. It is one of the most effective ways for us as educators to learn creative methods and to solve complex problems. Unable to be socially aware is a problem for me as an educator and I’m surprised that this is what influenced my score in this area. Social awareness is a crucial component of appropriate classroom behavior, which contributes to an environment conducive to learning. As educators we must recognize our emotions and children emotions in order to have insight into what’s causing them, to help us respond with a compassionate understanding and re-direct behavior appropriately. Therefore, as an educator these skills are imperative not only for my personal well-being but to improve children’s learning.

All interactions are important to children’s development, instructionally or socially. After completing the self-assessment tool, I have to say I was impressed with both the results I received. Scoring at a 79 within Instructional Interactions allowed me to see my strengths and what I needed to work on as an educator within my instructional teaching practices. According to Responsive Interactions and Instruction in Prekindergarten through 3rd Grade (2014), as educators we must use responsive interactions and comprehensive instructional strategies to create caring learning communities so that children come to school eager to learn. Therefore, we must use a variety of techniques that are responsive to young children’s learning styles, experiences, and culture, including encouragement, giving specific feedback, modeling, adding a challenge, offering clues, providing information, and giving directions (Tarrant, 2014). Educators who have social-emotional competency are high in both self-and-social awareness. Scoring at a 78 in Social Interactions I would have to disagree. As an educator I can recognize and manage my own emotions as well as understand how my emotional responses impact others. According to Social Responsibility of Educators (2013), it is our responsibility to provide a nurturing and welcoming learning environment for all children, and to take seriously the position of influence we are in. Not all children learn the same or at the same rate, but they all deserve the same opportunities to learn and succeed. We are considered important socializers of emotion, providing children experiences that promote or deter their development of emotional competence.

Strong leadership is a vital component of any thriving classroom. According to the self-rating score I received, the leadership skills I possess that support both social-emotional competencies is self-awareness. Knowing ones own social identity is the key in developing a classroom built on inclusive relationships. Self-awareness plays a critical role in how we as educators learn and grow. As an educator being aware of my emotional life in the classroom is a conscious act of professional willpower. We must be able to recognize our emotions in order to understand not only self but others and, in fact, the world around us.

Our job is to teach the children we have. Not the ones we would like to have. Not the ones we use to have. Those we have right now (Yoder, 2013). As educators we must become more self-aware of the importance of our word choice, the tone of our voice, and body language and how that can alter an atmosphere into a positive or negative one. Although most of us are not aware of it, but all educators possess a cultural identity. We must as educators be aware of our own culture and its effects on our teaching as well as being aware of our children’s culture and its effect on learning.

As educators we contribute to the social and emotional development of our children. Supportive teacher-student relationships play an important role in healthy classrooms. A well-designed social environment helps foster positive peer relationships and provide opportunities for children to achieve their social goals. We must teach children how to recognize emotions and to express them in ways that are socially appropriate. Children who don’t learn to use emotional language have a hard time understanding and labeling their own feelings. Therefore, as an educator I must ensure that my children have opportunities across their day to interact and create important relationships.

All our children come with unique experiences and backgrounds, just like we as educators all have different experience that prepare us to excel or flounder in the classroom. In every aspect of teaching, we make choices and take action. Our decisions are shaped by who we are. When we become self-aware as educators, we make conscious choices. I am responsible for establishing a successful learning environment, one that values and enable learning for both children and teacher. Responsive 21st century teaching requires us as educators to create environments and provide experiences that encourage exploration and inquiry, and nurture creativity and curiosity.

Personal Development Comes from Overcoming Fear, Failures, and Isolation

Have you overcome a fear, only to look back and wonder why you were so afraid? I recently went to Sky Zone and had to psych myself up for about 10 minutes just to do a backflip, but once I did–it was so natural. Stephen Crane published ‘The Red Badge of Courage’ in October 1895 about soldier Henry in the American Civil War in 1861. Ernest Hemingway printed his book ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ in September 1952 about Fishman Santiago in Cuba in 1951. Santiago had fears about catching a fish, while Henry had a dread of battles. Henry and Santiago, grappling with fear and failures, learn that isolation brings personal development.

Santiago’s failures are obvious as the reader sees his living conditions, pride, and physical condition. “The old man’s life on the island is isolated both socially and economically from the other fishermen and villagers. Foremost, he has no family. A photograph of his deceased wife serves as a reminder of this loss, but he keeps it under a clean shirt because the sight of the photograph makes him too lonely”. Santiago on the boat realizes that stress is causing him to lose physical vision and metaphorical vision. “For an hour the old man had been seeing black spots before his eyes and the sweat salted his eyes and salted the cut over his eye and on his forehead. He was not afraid of the black spots. They were normal at the tension that he was pulling on the line. Twice, though, he had felt faint and dizzy and that had worried him. ‘I could not fail myself and die on a fish like this’, he said. ‘Now that I have him coming so beautifully, God help me endure. I’ll say a hundred Our Fathers and a hundred Hail Marys. But I cannot say them now’” (Hemingway 108). The old man fears defeat because of pride, he fears ‘failing himself’, not the fish; nor is he concerned for the need to eat or make money from his catch. Santiago is out on the boat when he utters these words about his bodily failure. ”Ay,’ he said aloud. There is no translation for this word and perhaps it is just a noise such as a man might make, involuntarily, feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood” (Hemingway 108). The old man recognizes defeat when it comes, never deceiving himself and always facing reality.

Henry’s failures and fears lead to his isolation from other soldiers. ‘‘The Red Badge of Courage’ is the coming-of-age story of a young man who, against his mother’s wishes, joins the army in order to achieve the glory and adventure he has been told about through the stories about war that he hears while growing up in his hometown. Much to his shock and dismay, he discovers—as he witnesses, his comrades fall in battle—that war is dirty, dangerous, exhausting, and a source of despair. In the heat of battle, his courage is tested, and he fails”. Henry is more concerned with his isolation than he is with his reputation or his safety. “The youth would have liked to have discovered another who suspected himself. A sympathetic comparison of mental notes would have been a joy to him” (Crane 23). Henry seeks this ‘companion’ in order to justify his own cowardice and break the isolation which so torments him. Stephen Crane wrote about fears from his personal experience. “He felt alone in space when his injured comrade had disappeared. His failure to discover any mite of resemblance in their viewpoints made him more miserable than before. No one seemed to be wrestling with such a terrific personal problem. He was a mental outcast” (Crane 35-36). ‘Red Badge of Courage’ is essentially about a desire to be one of the formal soldiers and how Henry feels isolated from his comrades and envies them.

Santiago’s throughout the novel goes through isolation and solitude. “Isolation also haunts the old man’s dreams. When the old man finally allows himself to sleep during his second night at sea, he has three dreams. Between two dreams of companionship and pleasure is a dream of discomfort and cold. This harsh dream resembles the old man’s life on the island: a chilly, unpleasant night in a shack”. Solitude was just something Santiago always went through and was basically used to. “On the brown walls of the flattened, overlapping leaves of the sturdy fibered guano there was a picture in color of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and another of the Virgin of Cobre. These were relics of his wife. Once there had been a tinted photograph of his wife on the wall but he had taken it down because it made him too lonely to see it and it was on the shelf in the corner under his clean shirt” (Hemmingway 13-14). The old man has had solitude forced upon him, separated from his wife by death and the boy, by his parents. The reader understands, Santiago was already alone even before the trip out to sea and while out on the water. “Then he said aloud, ‘I wish I had the boy. To help me and to see this” (Hemingway 25). The old man later desires the boy’s presence because he wants someone to share the experience with.

Henry’s throughout his experience at war felt isolation and loneliness. “Henry Fleming, feels self-doubts that fill him with fear: Will he stand brave and fight in battle, or will he run? He hints at these fears in conversations with his comrades, hoping to find a companion with whom he can commiserate. However, the other soldiers scoff at the idea, and the youth feels alone”. Stephen Crane shows how Henry really felt during the beginning of the book and does it in a way that he was feeling with sad miserable words. “He had grown to regard himself merely as a part of a vast blue demonstration. His province was to look out, as far as he could, for his personal comfort. For recreation, he could twiddle his thumbs and speculate on the thoughts which must agitate the minds of the generals. Also, he was drilled and drilled and reviewed and drilled and drilled and reviewed” (Crane 13). Interestingly, Henry’s loss of personal identity only makes him feel more isolated. He might be part of a larger machine, but he is a nameless cog surrounded by equally mechanical counterparts. There is no connection, no comfort to be found in this grouping of men. Stephen Crane shows how Henry finds religious serenity in his isolation. “At length, he reached a place where the high, arching boughs made a chapel. He gently pushed the green doors aside and entered. Pine needles were a gentle brown carpet. There was a religious half-light. Near the threshold, he stopped, horror-stricken at the sight of a thing. He was being looked at by a dead man who was seated with his back against a column like a tree” (Crane 89-90). The almost religious serenity Henry finds in his isolation is marred by this intrusion of a dead body. It’s almost as if Crane is asking, ‘Where is God in all this, anyway?”.

Santiago’s personal development on behalf of everything he went through in his past life. Secondary Quote: “We all have a different perspective on things in our life, and as we grow up and experience more it starts to shift and most likely turn into a change”. “This is the second day now that I do not know the result of the juegos, he thought. But I must have confidence and I must be worthy of the great DiMaggio who does all things perfectly even with the pain of the bone spur in his heel. What is a bone spur? he asked himself. Un espuela de hueso. We do not have them. Can it be as painful as the spur of a fighting cock in one’s heel? I do not think I could endure that or the loss of the eye and of both eyes and continue to fight as the fighting cocks do. Man is not much beside the great birds and beasts. Still, I would rather be that beast down there in the darkness of the sea” (Hemingway 68-69). The old man believes that beasts are superior to men in their ability to endure. This is the opposite of what he previously thought.

Henry’s Personal development (including how the ‘red badge’ changed his ‘courage’). “When the youth runs from battle, it is with animal-like imagery: ‘He ran like a rabbit’ and ‘he was like a proverbial chicken’. The youth’s later determination to stand against the enemy is described in catlike images: ‘He was not going to be badgered of his life, like a kitten chased by boys, he said. It was not well to drive men into final corners; at those moments they could all develop teeth and claws’. His lieutenant uses similar images to describe him after the battle: ‘By heavens, if I had ten thousand wild cats like you I could tear th’ stomach outa this war in less’n a week!’”. Setting of the quote: “The procession of weary soldiers became a bedraggled train, despondent and muttering, marching with churning effort in a trough of liquid brown mud under a low, wretched sky. Yet the youth smiled, for he saw that the world was a world for him, though many discovered it to be made of oaths and walking sticks” (Crane 254). While the indifference of the universe horrified Henry earlier, he here seems to take solace in its presence. He no longer feels alone or insignificant. Sometimes it takes one to fail multiple times to finally recognize your shortcoming and appreciate your value. “For a time this pursuing recollection of the tattered man took all elation from the youth’s veins. He saw his vivid error, and he was afraid that it would stand before him all his life. He took no share in the chatter of his comrades, nor did he look at them or know them, save when he felt sudden suspicion that they were seeing his thoughts and scrutinizing each detail of the scene with the tattered soldier. Yet gradually he mustered force to put the sin at a distance. And at last his eyes seemed to open to some new ways. He found that he could look back upon the brass and bombast of his earlier gospels and see them truly. He was gleeful when he discovered that he now despised them” (Crane 253). This quote is important to the novel’s conclusion. Henry is finally able to both recognize his shortcomings and appreciate his value. His past failures neither destroy him nor does he pretend they never happened. There’s a reason ‘acceptance’ is always the final step.

In conclusion, failures and isolations bring personal development in one’s life. Stephen Crane’s Henry and Santiago by Ernest Hemingway, show the author’s perspective of fear and failures, and isolation brings personal development.

INTRODUCTION

Training and development are considered to be an important activity that enhances the skills and knowledge of the employees with which they can perform their task efficiently and effectively. To identify the need for training and development program the managers analyze the capability and competence of the employee against the task that they have to perform that specific skills are taught to them while with development program personality and management skill of employees are enhanced. This report is based on Roundup Cafe which is located in Canada. It has been temporarily closed due to covid-19 but now the cafe is about to reopen by taking into consideration various guidelines from the office of Provisional Health Officer of British Columbia. To support this the report includes need analysis, various training that is to be designed and delivered to the staff of the cafe along with measures and methods for evaluating the training provided to them.

NEED ANALYSIS

Organizational Analysis

Roundup Cafe is in Canada which has been offering authentic 50’s dinner to the customer. They are renowned for their specialization in homemade Canadian and Ukrainian cuisine. Also, they offer a wide variety of breakfast items are offered by the cafe. It has been operating for over 58 years and is familiar among most of the people who prefer home-cooked meals as well as freshly baked pies every day. The staff of the cafe is friendly and supportive due to which they ensure quick service to the customers and ensure better relations with them with healthy interactions. This makes the environment of the cafe appreciable and appealing to the visitors. The cafe has casual attire which makes it simple and attractive to the customers. Various resources that are possessed by the cafe include furniture, equipment used in the kitchen, cutlery for serving the food, payment, billing, and order management equipment, etc. that facilitates them in their day to day operations.

Due to covid-19, the requirement of safety guidelines for the cafe has been increased which they have to comply with. Some of the guidelines for cafes include wearing cloth face coverings, regular disinfecting practices for high touch surfaces, good ventilation, social distancing among the sitting arrangements. Along with this system need to be adopted for menus and for placing orders as well as the use of disposable utensils rather than common utensils or dispensers. Online payment systems need to be emphasized for limiting contact with each other. British Columbia has provided various guidelines, notices, and orders which roundup Cafe has to be complied with such as cafes and restaurants are to be closed by 11 p.m., all the banquet facilities are closed, no more than six patrons seated are allowed, etc. While reopening the cafe sufficient training in the context of various guidelines and standards that are to be provided along with training for the use of various products need to be provided that is to be used for ensuring safety within the Cafe.

TASK ANALYSIS

In the cafe different types of jobs are to be undertaken and they all need to be provided training in the context of standards and guidelines to be complied with for ensuring safety and security such as cafe manager, support manager, chefs, waiters, cafe associate and cleaning staff.

The job title that has been selected for the training plan is of cafe manager because they have the major responsibility of managing the entire operations by ensuring compliance with guidelines and standards for safety. Also, their training is important because they are responsible for recruiting training and supervising other staff members as well as for formulating various strategies with which compliance of all the regulations and provisions can be facilitated.

Due to covid-19 safety regulation, the cafe manager has to perform various new tasks:

  • Requirement of implementation and monitoring of district sanitation measures has been increased
  • Frequency of training to the staff members for identifying and addressing issues related to covid-19
  • Requirement of open communication with the customer and guest need to be considered
  • Due to the reduction in the workforce the task of support manager needs to be performed by the cafe manager
  • Responsibility in the context of wages and hour issues increased due to the reduced number of staff members
  • Responsibility to consider shorter modifications about benefits eligibility policies and procedures increased.

Roundup Cafe has been operating on a small scale due to which they have one Cafe manager and for only one Cafe manager they need to organized training which will be responsible for the training of other staff members. The obstacle that can be faced by the owners by providing training to the cafe manager is related to of lack of specific methods for obtaining judgment about the performance of the cafe manager after training. For these various performance standards will be designed that can analyze the improvement and compliance of various guidelines and standards related to covid-19.

The training can be influenced by personal, mental, physical, intellectual, and individual factors. In the case of training of cafe manager, the factor that can influence includes their attitude, ability to learn, their emotional and social considerations, etc. This can be managed by making them understand the need for such training as well as their responsibility to be the supervisor of the cafe.

For developing an effective training plan the organization needs to identify various knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics that they need to develop within the trainees so that they can perform better for the particular position. With KSAO’s the skills and attributes that are required for the particular positions can be identified. For the position of Cafe manager various KSAO’s are to be considered which includes:

Knowledge: The cafe manager needs to acquire sufficient knowledge in the context of various regulatory bodies that have issued guidelines and protocols in the context of restaurants and cafes. Along with this various knowledge that they need to develop within the training are related to:

  • Developing a covid-19 safety plan for the employees within the so that the risk of transmission can be reduced
  • Understanding of various risk within the cafe that needs to be mitigated with hygiene practices
  • Selection of various protocol for the workplace which is classified into four levels by British Columbia
  • Knowledge and understanding of all the protocols for restaurants and cafes along with the guidance issued by provisional health officer.

Skills: During the training program cafe manager is expected to develop the skills in the context of effective communication, commercial awareness, teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance. With the help of these skills, the cafe manager can ensure that all the other staff members are communicated and encouraged in a better way to manage the situation by ensuring compliance with all the instructions provided to them.

Abilities: The abilities that are expected to be improved in the cafe manager include a focus on results, providing training, and sufficient guidance to the other staff members regarding various provisions and standards. Training & Development

I was born and raised here in Kingston and have full intent to leave here as soon as possible! I entered this program right after graduating from high school. I went to Regiopolis-Notre Damn Catholic High School for three miserable years before switching to Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute where I thrived. At each school I learned a lot about my learning preferences. The faculty: especially the administration staff made much of my high school experience far more tolerable. Each guidance counsellor and secretary made me feel welcomed and listened to. Anytime any of them come into Shoppers I always thank them from the bottom of my heart as high school was not the easiest time for me due to having to work constantly and mental health issues. I credit them alongside my mum for my interest in business administration. What makes me unique compared to others is my attention to detail, altruistic personality, my dedication, and drive.

I have always had to work harder than most people in order to succeed and survive (as dramatic as that sounds) though I do not recognize that as a downfall. I believe my workmanship only benefits me as I have learned a lot about the real world and who I am as a person. I have Bipolar II Disorder which I find is necessary to inform people of. Although this can cause implications with my personal life, I have never allowed it to get in the way of my success or professional relationships. I am an animal-loving, humanitarian workaholic and devote myself to helping others in need. I believe in karmic energy and manifestation which has always pushed me in the right direction. I am in a much better place and am thriving not only in my job environment, but my mentality and relationships with people around me. This program so far has increased my confidence and allowed me to develop and grow far beyond my expectations.

After completing this diploma program, I intend to carry on and complete the degree. I am a knowledge sponge which will allow me to reach my goals of becoming a successful business owner and activist. I love learning new things and challenging myself. Hopefully after completing this business program I will find an occupation that pays well enough to support myself and a pet. I have always had an affinity towards animals, especially rescues. I hope to have a brand that will allow me to support my community and global (issues)

Training and development are crucial to learn in a human resources program because it greatly improves organizational effectiveness which is the main objective of human resource occupations. Training assists employees with strengthening their skills and knowledge about a company. Training and development also aid in the retainment of good employees. Training programs promote employees to feel more confident and valuable to a company. With the help of development programs, employees can not only thrive in the offered position, but can evolve and encourage them to increase their knowledge of the job and move up to positions with management or leadership responsibilities. Training allows employees to enhance their understanding of their positions and required tasks. Training and development not only support employees but assists companies in determining key roles that advance a workplace. Proper training and development programs reduce employee turnover, increase productivity, increase customer satisfaction, and build a company’s reputation.

Personal Dynamics and Growth: Reflective Essay

What is your current understanding of your strengths and weaknesses?

I believe that we have some characteristics that we thrive in and others that we need some work in. We are our lived experiences, those that have made us who we are today. Our experiences are those which became life lessons or things to remember. These moments where we have made choices and the Spirit has been with us regardless of the outcome. The strengths become what we thrive in, what we love, and what we are good at. Our weaknesses are our work in progress, a way that I am reminded that I don’t know it all, that I don’t have everything put together, and that regardless of how many steps I need to take the Spirit will lead me in these areas of growth.

These experiences could be ones of joy or sorrow but experiences that allow us to understand ourselves with a deeper meaning to who we are and qualities that we can strive for. Some of the qualities that I have been given with my life experience and stories are empathy, adaptability, and organizational skills. Empathy has become the most common strength that people that I work with, roommates, classmates, and family have pointed out. I believe that God has allowed me to live through some circumstances that have given me the opportunity to want to understand the other person. I have lived through scarcity in a single-parent home, I have seen power and greed take over people that I loved, and I have been given the opportunity to experience life and ministry with people around the globe.

Some of the things that have made me the strongest could also lead to finding weaknesses and areas of growth. Some of my weakest qualities are my self-criticism, lack of confrontation, and public speaking. I tend to criticize what I do a lot, I push myself to the point that I question if what I’m doing is right or wrong. Growing up I saw a lot of confrontation in my family. I learned that talking about things usually works, and that as long as I can communicate I would be okay. I don’t like arguing and I avoid confrontation unless I have to. I always try to figure out a way that would not lead to confrontation whether that is by talking to the individual, trying to communicate an alternative, and expressing how I feel and how whatever happened made me feel. Lastly, public speaking is an area of growth. Although I can stand up and speak, and say what I need to say I still get nervous when I speak. This has been something that has improved during the last few years but it is still a work in progress. I know that these weaknesses are something that God is working on in me and preparing me to stand up and continue to find my voice. I have seen improvement in this and in other areas and I have seen how my strengths have attributed to this progress. I hope that as I continue to work and develop this urge and excitement for ministry that my growth areas become stronger and that my strengths continue to develop with new skills.

How are you growing emotionally? Share a specific story to illustrate a learning experience in personal growth from your life and/or ministry.

The last three years during seminary have allowed me to learn many things about myself and what I believe. My life and my ministry have removed many blindfolds that I had with what I believed and how I believed it. I had the time to process my faith, to analyze and see what were things that I believed and things that were taught to me to believe. Growing up I was the churches I went to had taught me that what the pastor said was the law, that the pastor knew the bible better than anyone else, and that I should listen to the bible based on what they said. That was quickly shattered in seminary. I had to figure it out, I had to find answers that I didn’t know and research what I believed. During my time in seminary that was exciting but also challenging to figure out how that would look when I graduated in a ministry setting.

For the past two months, I have been working in a new role as a Family Discipleship Minister at Epworth UMC in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This role thus far has provided the space for me to put into practice what I had to decipher in seminary. I am slowly seeing how I can now apply the lessons learned in seminary to the context and the community that I work with. The community is very similar to the one I grew up in – traditional, conservative, listening to what the pastor and only the pastor or leader say. Although the dynamics of the community are shifting and some look for answers the culture is very similar to how I grew up. I am learning how to communicate what I learned and share our stories to learn from one another. Even if this might be a little hard at the beginning I’ve seen how people’s perspectives are shifting and how we can all learn from one another in life and in ministry.

What personal challenges are you currently facing? How are you dealing with those challenges in your ministry?

Last December my mother-in-law was a victim of an assault in her store in West Virginia. She was shot in the face and was in ICU for three weeks and rehab for seven months. These past eight months I’ve had to adjust to recently being married, processing, supporting, and comforting my husband and family during difficult times, graduating from seminary, moving, and looking for a job. These personal challenges have allowed me to be thankful, and to remember that every day is a gift and that our lives are one of the most important blessings that we receive daily.

After being three weeks in ICU caring for my mother-in-law, seeing car accidents, injuries, and gunshot wombs it has made me worry and doubt about safety and security in everyday things. During my last semester at the seminary and in my new ministry setting I have received nothing but grace, love, and compassion from all that around us. People have made the weight on my shoulders feel like it was being shared and that I was not alone. Being able to trust that I will be okay, that my husband would be okay, and that our family would be okay is hard. But one thing I do know is that we have not been forsaken or forgotten. That God has granted us more time with my mother-in-law, that her health might never be the same but that she’s okay. Through our family and friends, my husband and I got counseling sessions to help us cope with trauma and high-level stress, and we were able to process our emotions and understand one another better. Talking it out allowed us to feel comfortable, accept our new reality and see that challenges will come but that with God’s help we would take them one day at a time.

What means do you use to maintain the Sabbath, spiritual disciplines, and care of mind-body-spirit?

Our lives today are lives that are planned with schedules and appointments and blocked times. Sometimes we even have to block a time for our sabbath, our spiritual disciplines, and our care for our mind-body-spirit. We are so caught up with our schedules that sometimes we tend to rush in whatever part of our duties we missed.

We have to remember to keep the Sabbath holy (Exodus 20:8). We are taught at a young age to keep the Sabbath, but we get so caught up in our ministry, families, life, etc. that we don’t follow it. I have learned that if I don’t take rest if I don’t stop and reflect and take in my mind, body, and soul reach a point where they make me rest. My body begins to shut down with headaches or I’m so distracted by what I’m doing that I tend to lose track of my tasks. I’ve learned the meaning and the significance that it has for my health and for my ministry. Sabbath has become one of my weekly disciplines.

A discipline makes us dig deeper, ask and wonder more. It challenges us and makes us think of things that otherwise we wouldn’t. God expects us to have discipline, to be busy and have a life but to also keep our spiritual discipline. A spiritual discipline is “God’s way of getting us into the ground; they put us where he can work within us and transform us.”

If I want to connect to all that I do, respect it, and do it to the best of my abilities I remind myself that I need time for prayer, worship, and journaling in order for me to synch with God. I need to re-energize with the Spirit in us for me to continue.

Lifespan Development and Personality Paper

It is the Early Childhood. The reason why I have chosen this particular lifespan is because of its complexity and theory-based practice as well as practical to help young children get the best start in life. There are many different specialty services that all help to nourish the needs of the early childhood lifespan and this is so important for development. We gain knowledge and understanding of the developmental process and we further enhance our peripheral views of the factors that affect early childhood lifespan development and how to intervene appropriately-this is what intrigued me to choose this lifespan. I will provide an in-depth overview of the Developmental lifespan and developmental milestones of early childhood and look at the factors that affect lifespan development of the early childhood lifespan. I shall then discuss the theories of the development of the early childhood lifespan and from there I will discuss why this is important to know as health and social care professionals. We will then look at the services available to the early childhood lifespan across 5 examples which will include the public private and voluntary sector and why these are relevant and provide a brief overview of each service and how they interact with early childhood. Finally, I shall summarise what we have covered and learned about early childhood.

Early Childhood Lifespan Development is the process of natural growth and education in children. These Lifespan Developments include Physical, Emotional, Social, and Intellectual developments. It is also the concept of children progressing from one exclusive stage to another. On the other hand, Early childhood lifespan milestones are major life events in a Child`s development, that is an ability or skill children develop at a certain age or are expected to perform at that age. Like lifespan development, it includes the Physical, Emotional, Social, and Intellectual aspects.

Finally, the factors that affect development of the early childhood are problems that intervene with normal early childhood development.

Lifespan Developments

Early childhood lifespan development is defined as the physical, Emotional, Social, and intellectual process of development between the ages of 0-8 Years of age. (FIND A BETTER DEFINITION)

Physical Developments in the Early Childhood

Enhanced Gross motor skills-these skills involve control of large muscle groups in the body to move around, for example, the muscles in the legs and back. These activities in early childhood demonstrate the development of gross motor skills, these include but are not limited to:

  • Walking.
  • Running.
  • Crawling.
  • Jumping.
  • Climbing.

Enhanced fine motor skills-these are skills that involve smaller muscle groups that require great coordination and manipulation. Some developmental examples of fine motor skills include but again not limited to:

  • Throwing a ball.
  • Catching a ball.
  • Squeezing a toy.
  • Picking up a pen.
  • Playing with Lego.

Balance and stabilization-young children in particular develop from 3 years upwards. Children can start to balance on 1 leg for about 5 seconds and learn to stabilize themselves. Some developmental examples of Balance and stabilization include:

  • Squatting.
  • Hanging.
  • Turning.
  • Twisting.
  • Stretching.

Emotional Developments in the Early Childhood

  • Increase of feelings and awareness of themselves-by at the age of 3-6 they start to develop strong emotions related to their environment such as being afraid of the dark and needing a light turned on.
  • Children around the age of 2 start to have strong feelings towards peers and other people-this can be jealous of other peers making them want to lash out.
  • Toddlers and 2-Year-olds start to become increasingly self-conscious-this can be starting to adopt feelings of shame, guilt, and pride.

Social Developments in the Early Childhood

  • Children between toddler and 2 years of age start to form relationships with their peers-an example of this would be in nursery during playtime where a child might copy another child`s action (for example picking the same color of a toy and one child throwing it in the air and the other child copies) and they laugh together through imitation of each other and shared ideas.
  • The self-control of their behavior and thoughts start to fine tune-they start to develop the ability to control bursts of tantrums by age 6 and start to develop a moral of what is right and wrong and the impact their actions and words have on peers.
  • By the ages 3-6, they start to adopt a theory of mind (ToM)(Brief explanation of the theory of mind resource)-this could be through imaginative role-play in nurseries as they explore and discover what is it like to be someone else or in their shoes.

Intellectual Developments in the Early Childhood

  • By age 2-3 Children have memorized around 40-600 words in their vocabulary.
  • Development of memory capacity-which allows them to retain more information and language (0-2 Years of age).
  • Development of the sensorimotor stage-within the first 2 years a child would fully develop reflexes and tries out new ways of play by manipulation of objects, and within this play explores trial and error learning curves-such as Lego bricks requiring certain manipulation to fit into one another.
