  • Fairness: this is simply the ability of a person to make a decision or carry out judgements without discriminating or treating individuals impartially. I apply fairness in my life by for instance, treating cleaner and domestic staffs in places I visit without discriminating because of their jobs or conditions and also by not taking advantage of people. I have vowed to myself that I will treat everyone fairly, regardless.
  • Honesty: the act of being truthful, I apply honesty in my life very often because I try to be honest all the time to avoid deceiving people. I practice honesty by saying the truth and not lying to mislead or deceive people by any means and also by promising myself that I will never be dishonest.

Decision making is described as the procedure of selecting the best alternative course of action. There are a number of values that guide me when making decisions daily, these values are personal ethical guidelines that guide me in my personal and professional life and the help me make the best decision during tough times.   • Beneficence: this is one of the values I possess and simply put, beneficence means to do good to people. It guides and influences my decision making because I always try as much as possible to respect individuals and also promote the welfare of individuals.

My personal ethical character traits are: leadership, respect (because it is very important to respect to everyone by carefully listening to them and respecting their opinions even if you do not agree with them), justice (it is important to not have favourites and to treat everyone fairly with no bias treatment due to gender, background, religion, ethnicity, etc.) and encouraging initiative.

I was fortunate to be born into a family with a good foundation, with good values, standards and morals that guide me to do what is right not just for me, but for others as well. My morality as of today was established from the guidelines, behaviours, values and beliefs that have been taught to me as I was brought up. This is why I know the difference between wrong and right and why I also always choose to do right.

Furthermore, I am a practicing Muslim and my religion greatly influences how I behave, treat people, respect people and life itself. It also teaches me how to contribute to the society in which I belong. My religion from a young age taught me about dignity, respect, honesty, modesty, empathy, fairness, kindness, charity, self-discipline, integrity, etc. My Islamic values over the time have become guiding principles for me, the guide me to do right all the time. For instance, let’s say one of the athletes that I represent is taking steroids and that I’m aware of it. I then have to decide if I let them continue to use the performance enhancing drug or follow the rules and report the violations. The reason why this is such a big dilemma is because the player who is using the illegal steroids is likely to perform significantly better. This could result in an increased level of income which would also benefit the agent. The agent who doesn’t report the violations would be a person who is greedy, arrogant and selfish. On the other hand, the agent who does report the violations, would be doing the right thing and is a person who has integrity, honesty, accountability, and leadership. These are some of the virtues I would need to perfect in order to benefit from them.

My course of action simply would be to only work for a sports agency and only partner with athletes who core values align with mine. If their core values don’t align with mine, then I would remove myself from that situation. If there’s anything I’ve learned from these kind of unethical business decisions, it’s that eventually people get caught. Therefore, I will not put myself in that situation by working for an indecent agency and clients because I place a high value on integrity. Integrity is based off the ability to act honestly and precise based on the particular core and moral values within the company and in yourself.

Throughout the semester we had several guest speakers come and give us some real-life examples of unethical behavior that they’ve experienced. Many of these instances are things that could happen to me at my future job of employment. These speakers gave us advice on how to handle these particular situations. If I’m not careful and don’t follow a personal ethics plan, I could get roped into these same situations. I believe that through my integrity and perseverance to follow my personal ethics plan, I will chose to do what is morally and ethically right at all times.

Personal Views on Ethics

I do my very best to avoid situations that force me to choose between doing what is right and that which benefits me. Doing what is right usually requires a person to put others’ interests above themselves. Doing what is beneficial to a person is quite self-explanatory. When approaching any ethical issues, I contemplate with these two questions: should I do the right thing or that which benefits me. While it might sound selfish and easy to do the right thing all the time, the actual decision is hard to make in the grand scheme of things, especially when doing right puts a beloved one or oneself in trouble.

My decision, however, is not based on those two questions above, my verdict on ethical issues always comes up to the morality of the problem: was it right or wrong, good or bad. I make these moral decisions based on two things, namely the society I grew up in and my religious background. I was born and raised in Atieku, a small village in Ghana. Philosophically, collectivism best fits the lifestyle of the people of Ateiku. Members of families do what is best for their family and community as a whole, and there are rules and laws in place to enforce it. Ateiku is also a religiously Christian village. The village holds religious beliefs in the highest regard. Most of the laws of the village can are deduced from the Bible. These two factors, in addition to my conscience, have shaped the way I determine right from wrong or good from bad. For example, one of the reasons I believe technology companies are responsible for privacy issues because I think most companies and their chief executive officers (CEOs) put their quarterly earnings report above their customers.

My ethical beliefs, I believe, aligns with the consequentialist ethical theory, specifically utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is a type of consequentialism theory that holds a group’s interest and happiness above all else, for the good of everyone. When I face ethical dilemmas, I evaluate any act done for personal interests because it is essential for my assessment of the issue. Even though my ethical values call me to put others’ interests above mine, I sometimes give deontologist the benefit of the doubt. I do this because my social and religious beliefs also call me to defend the weak and destitute without any limitations, which sometimes require mudding the waters.

Looking back today, there are a lot of decisions I will change based on my current ethical beliefs and framework. In middle school, for example, there was a girl in my class called Felicia. Felicia was a gorgeous girl. She had a great smile, one that lights up every room she entered. She turned me down the first time I asked her to be my girlfriend; however, I persisted. During our final exam of middle school, she was sitting adjacent to me, and I could tell she was struggling. After I finished my exam, I opted to help her with her exam with the idea that it will make her like me even though I knew cheating was against the rules. She opened up to me after the exam but told me the reason she cannot be my girlfriend: her father was the headmaster, equivalent to a U.S. high school principal, and did not like me. In this situation, I helped Felicia do an unethical and immoral thing: I helped her cheat on an exam. Looking back on this situation, I realized that I wasn’t thinking at all. I didn’t think of the adverse consequences cheating would have brought to her and the rest of the class. In my current ethical framework, I wouldn’t have helped her cheat because I would have put my interests above the rest of my colleagues in the classroom.

Personal Values and Ethics

We are living in a society where the ‘values’ are a fundamental part of it, to be able to have a decent quality life in your social, family and professional life. The values we have are very important, now days they demonstrate and distinguish the person you are and are becoming. The values we learn since we were little until now, have and will influence throughout your whole life to make us a better person.

All these values are very important because when we are citizens we have to act and be professional; having value makes us have ethics in our life and makes us have ethical behavior. Therefore, the values need to be exercised in any place and activity that we carry out either within our professional life or our social life because we are guided by our personal values. They make us better people day after day.

Consequently, it is estimated that values have a purpose, they are useful in a lot of good ways: as a guide for action (how we should behave), as a guide to assess or judge situations (points of cooperation), as a basis to give good reason for behaviors, personal changes, etc. The types of values that establish the principles that guide the behavior of human beings and their relationship with others in society within our professional life are very important.

Personal values, these are those that we consider necessary principles on which we build our lives and guide us to interact with other people. Citizen values, a set of values that allow human beings to work, be and develop their potential according to their own efforts. At the same time, it is personal attitudes which include their personal values they maintain throughout their life and practice them (Lifeder, 2019).

Professional values are nothing more than human values directed towards the profession. Their meanings are related to the requirements of the profession. They establish a professional personality and define you as the person you are looked up too.

Ethical performance in the community is essential. A case of ethics in the community or in society begins by first respecting the privacy, the property of the other individual. And these values as mention before are gain through the personal life of the human. By knowing and following what you think its right, defines your behavior ethical giving us a chance to take them in practice in our professional life. Work ethics could include values such as honesty when delivering your work. In my perspective, the main values that citizens and professionals should have would be those of honesty, respect, and discipline. Usually these values are the ones we take in practice the most throughout our day and are consider to be necessary to have peace and tranquility.

Narrative Essay on Personal Ethical Development

Ethics is an important part of the lives of people. Many people regard it as important and applicable to the development of their lives. Similarly, I consider myself an ethical and moral human being. I apply ethics, philosophy, and justice in every path of my life. I cannot consider my life complete without the application of my ethical standards. These are the most important thing I consider applicable. Without ethical standards, I will be incomplete and my life will be meaningless. I understand the importance of the life provided to us, this is the reason, I consider that we should be kind, respectful, and honest with people and the work assigned to us.

In this essay, I will apply my ethical standards to understand their use. The application of my ethical standards will help in understanding the things that I apply in different situations and circumstances.

Ethics and Research

Research is the basic component of the life of every human being. In one way or another, we must analyze some aspects of our lives. I am in a UAE university, which asks us to do a lot of research for our homework and assignments. My job as a student is to research the work according to the rules and regulations. This research is used in my assignments based on honesty and providing respect to the researcher (Mertler, 2016). Honesty and respect play an important role in researching for our assignments. On the other hand, I provide respect to the author by giving him a reference in my work, which is quite important.

Ethics and Teaching-Learning

Teaching and learning are a complete process, this requires the honesty of the students and the teachers as well. If the teacher is respectful, kind, and honest towards their students, the students respond the same way. Similarly, my ethical standards say that it is important that we remain respectful and honest in our learning process. This is important because, it will benefit us in the future (Sleeter & Carmona, 2017). Our teachers will not earn anything from the process, this will help us in developing our future. My ethical standards ask of me to remain a constant listener, oblige by the rules of learning, and complete my work with honesty and timeliness. This incentive will help us in remaining honest, and respectful in all the parts of life, which is very important.

Ethics and Curriculum

The curriculum of the class is in the hands of the teachers. The students like me, also need to follow all the routines and curriculum of the class. The classroom material, which is a part of the classroom. The material used for studying needs to be aligned with the classroom subjects and the material provided by the university. Similarly, we as students need to understand that all the parts of the study material will be analyzed and used accurately (Cho, Jung, Kwak, Lee, & Yoo, 2017). My ethical standards allow me to use these materials provided by the teachers and used by us correctly. We need to understand that all the material provided by the teachers is part of our lesson plan, which plays an important part in our study. It is important that our teacher remains ethical, and we as students follow it too.

Ethics and Classroom Management

The use of the classroom is obligatory for both teachers and students. As a university student, I have an understanding of the importance of the classroom, which is an integral part of learning. On the other hand, the classroom requires a quorum, the respect of teachers. My ethical standards play an important role in my work completion (Sleeter & Carmona, 2017). As a teacher, I work hard to manage my students. I remain honest and respectful towards them. This is important for earning honesty and respect likewise. Similarly, as I student I respect my elders and teachers. I remain honest with them in my answers, I complete my work on time. On the other hand, I also work on my own work, and I help my class fellows as well.

Endorsing Ethical Standards in UAE

UAE is a loyal, respectful, and honest country, towards tourists and locals as well. The change and the development of our country were not possible without the use of honesty and respect towards each other. In our societies, we are taught to remain respectful and honest toward each other. My community and my family taught me the importance of respect, kindness, and honesty toward each other. Our country endorses the ethics and morality of the country person. On the other hand, our religion teaches us to develop honesty and respect for each other. This is important to move forward in our lives. Our country teaches that dishonest people fail in their lives. I try to apply all the ethical principles in my life, which are taught in my country, and my society.

Theories

Moral Realism

I can relate ethical theories to my ethical principles. Moral realism considers that moral truths are universal facts that are important to be applied in society. Moral realism is a factual antiquate that helps in making our lives meaningful. The development of moral realism means accepting some moral truth and statements that cannot be rejected in our lives. For example, moral realism considers that we should remain truthful and honest towards each other (Heineman, 2018). This is a fact, which helps in guiding our lives. Removing this statement from our lives, we will not be able to lead without doubting others. Our society also teaches us to remain honest and respectful toward each other. The application of moral realism teaches us to work by ethics and remain loyal to people. This development is important in gaining ethics and ethical approach in society.

Prescriptivism

I also consider that prescriptivism is another moral theory that is followed in our society, and my life. The theory states that morality and ethical standards are instructions or recommendations, which need to be followed in our lives. My society implies remaining kind, respectful, and honest towards people, which are recommendations to be followed in our lives (Salzman & Lawler, 2017). If we do not follow these recommendations, it means that we are doing bad things. I also think the same way. I think that my society is a good society, I need to follow all the instructions and recommendations, which make our lives moral and ethical. The development of moral recommendations makes our life moral and ethical; it helps in playing a life of morality and ethics.

Conclusion

This essay helps in delivering my ethical consideration and collaboration to society. With the passage of time, ethics and moral standard will develop in our lives. This essay helps in explaining the ethical aspects that will be used in classroom management, learning, research, and curriculum. The use of ethical standards is becoming obligatory in our lives. On the other hand, this essay helps in explaining moral realism, and prescriptivism. The use of all these helps in explaining my honesty and morality used in life.
