When most people think of success, they think it is portrayed as pure talent, ability, and happiness. But that is not always the case, as struggles and uncontrollable circumstances come in as a large factor. Essentially as we’ve progressed in the novel Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell, we’ve come across many stories and studies that is used to analyze who an individual is. Along with the key components it takes to get them to where they are today, and the great ideas and triumph they have achieved. These Outliers are represented as intelligent and hard working individuals who do not fit into our normal understanding of accomplishment in society. Gladwell’s main arguments were that practice has meaning, cultural legacy can influence opportunities, and that the time and a place where one was born matters. I have decided to use an example of one of the most famous physicists of the century. This scientists’ hard work and commitment was shown to truly express his brilliant mind through creative discoveries and inventions. Albert Einstein is an outlier. He has struggled and failed before reaching his full potential, even as being one of the most intelligent men in the world. Eventually this led him to his creation of the theory of relativity to the advancement of modern scientific physics.

Albert Einstein was not always successful, he came across obstacles and hardships that would hold absolutely anyone else from achieving phenomenally. To begin with a little history, Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany, but grew up and obtained his early education in Munich. As a young child, he was not able to speak until he was four years old, and not fluently until he was nine. While he struggled with language, he also performed very poorly academically in school due to his slow learning process. Most of his teachers believed that he was mentally handicaped and would never accomplish much. Gladwell claims, “It is not the brightest who succeed…nor is success simply the sum of the decisions and efforts we make on our own behalf. It is, rather, a gift. Outliers are those who have been given opportunities—and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them” (Gladwell 267). This represents that this did not stop Einstein from pursuing a higher education, as well as his fascination with the laws of nature even after his scholarly difficulties. Progressing further into his youth, Einstein had a journal in which he described his encounters with the two ‘wonders’. These wonders were a compass and a geometry book that have strongly influenced his further way of life. The first wonder, a compass was discovered when he was five years old. This was also around the time he started to excel in math and sciences, as hard work truly pays off. Einstein rebelled against the authoritarian attitude of some of his teachers and dropped out of school at sixteen. He later took an entrance exam for the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, and while his performances in physics and math were excellent, his marks in other areas were subpar, and he did not pass the exam. Though, he developed a passion for classical music and playing the violin, which would stay with him into his later years. Most significantly, Einstein’s youth was marked by deep inquisitiveness and inquiry.

As for Albert Einstein’s friends and family, Einstein’s parents were Jewish and middle-class. His father, Hermann Einstein, was both an engineer and a featherbed salesman, and later ran an electrochemical factory with moderate success. His mother, Pauline Koch, ran the family household. Even though he came from a Jewish background, he did not partake in Jewish practices. Einstein was raised a Catholic and became deeply religious at age twelve, even composing several songs in praise of God. But, this began to change after he read science books that contradicted his religious beliefs. Yet another important influence on Einstein was a young medical student, Max Talmud. Talmud became an informal tutor, introducing Einstein to higher mathematics and philosophy. This was around the time Einstein also wrote his first scientific paper. Einstein’s education was disrupted by his father’s repeated failures at business. Gladwell exclaims that, “Cultural legacies are powerful forces. They have deep roots and long lives. They persist, generation after generation, virtually intact, even as the economic and social and demographic conditions that spawned them have vanished, and they play such a role in directing attitudes and behavior that we cannot make sense of our world without them” (Gladwell 175). This serves as an explanation that in a way, Einstein’s background and family practices stuck with him till the very end. After graduating in 1900, he continued to search for a job for two consistent years until the father of his university classmate, Marcel Grossmann, helped him get employed as an assistant examiner at the Federal Office for Intellectual Property in Bern, Switzerland. At the patent office, Einstein was responsible for evaluating patent submissions for a variety of inventions. His friends and family were an overall influence on him which gave him opportunities to try new things and pursue what he believes in primarily based off intelligence and support.

The year of 1905 is called the “miracle year” of Albert Einstein. The reason for this was that he wrote four papers printed in a scientific journal called the “Annalen der Physik” that contributed significantly to the groundwork of modern physics and completely changed the view on space, time, mass, and energy (AstrumPeople). Those specific papers were on the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special theory of relativity, and mass-energy equivalence, and of course, the famous equation of E=mc^2. As Einstein went on to become a professor at the University in Zurich, he would later show to the world about his natural talent, work, and a chance to prove his peers, teachers, and other scientists wrong who ridiculed him. Most importantly, he won a Nobel Prize award in 1921 for his contribution toward the photoelectric effect. For instance, Gladwell asserted, “The sense of possibility so necessary for success comes not just from inside us or from our parents. It comes from our time: from the particular opportunities that our particular place in history presents us with” (Gladwell 137). Albert Einstein is truly a product of his time and made the best out of his opportunities by proving to everyone who had doubted him that he indeed had a brilliant mind.

In conclusion, despite all of Einstein’s rejections and setbacks from people, even the educational system, he continued to fight for what he believed in even if it meant sacrificing everything. He kept on with his studies, theories and experimentation. He worked hard his whole life, but nobody recognized his work until his theory of relativity was published. He was creative and a man with self-confidence that wasn’t afraid to prove to everyone around him what he was capable of. He became a genius not overnight, but by early self-discovery, critical reasoning, and by gaining knowledge. Einstein understood the fact that when you are different from others, people tend not to understand you, yet he was never afraid to stand alone and loved doing things his own way rather than following others. Einstein was a visionary, thinking ahead of his time and believed in impacting lives. Though his journey wasn’t an easy one, he never gave up and became a success by pursuing his dream to the very end and achieved it. This indeed makes him the ultimate Outlier.

The Main Ideas In The Book Outliers

INTRO DUCTION

Malcolm Gladwell, a well known journalist and non-fiction narrator. Writer of many books which includes OUTLIERS (The Story of Success), published by Little, Brown and Company in November, 2008.

SUMMARY

This is an exciting narration of different stories of successful people getting different achievements and factors that influences their life in good or bad manner. There are two basic parts in this book. One is OPPORTUNITY and second is LEGACY.

THE MATTHEWS EFFECT

From chapter one “THE MATTHEWS EFFECT” says that people who are well established and at the peak of their careers would gain more opportunities which cumulates in their success. The genius and rich one get tax discount (tax break) and help from others.

10,000 HOUR RULE

In second chapter he has given his famous statement of 10,000 hour rules. He says that those people who are God giftedly talent in any aspect, but this is the smaller part which play role in their success unless and until their hardworking enough to practice their talent this much time. So basically according to the author, practice plays a key role in getting success and Not only talent but extra ordinary opportunities also matters which is given to the ones who are born at the beginning of year from January to March.

THE TROUBLE WITH GENIOUSES

Everybody thinks that for leading the successful life greater IQ level matters allot instead of having average IQ scale with smart strategies and tactics, success will automatically comes into way. For example TERMAN conducted a study and having chosen kids on the basis of their IQ level greater than 140 and observe them until their adulthood. None can become a noble prize winner . so IQ doesn’t matter allot like Einstein having an IQ level of 150 versus Langan IQ level of 180 doesn’t make Langan more smarter and successful than Einstein.

THREE LESSONS OF JOE FLOM: (Jewish Lawyer)

LESSON ONE

In chapter number five, there was a period of between 1940’s to 1950’s in which Jewish were heavily discriminated and the successful law firm was not hiring any of the Jewish lawyer. So in these circumstances they had to start their own firm by their own and their only option is to take those cases that white shoe law firm’s decline and those are corporate takeovers. Fortunately in 1970’s regulations became relax and the corporate takeover increased their numbers and as the Jewish firm who were well reputed to deal with such cases comes into demand. So, what’s started as a disadvantage became their success.

LESSON TWO

In lesson two gives the importance to their specific time of birth like children born in between 1910 to 1940’s in this time a lot of chaos happened proxy war, great depression, flue epidemics. So, due to this less number of population increased, so university accept more people, competition decreased, hardship decreased due to smaller generation,. Therefore an opportunity comes in abundance for them. So birth time plays a key role in getting success.

LESSON THREE

The third lesson of Joe Flom says that cultural heritage and being a part of ‘humble origin’ gives an opportunity rather than being an obstacles in getting success. Like for instance Joe Flom belongs to the initial Jewish immigrants which had these traits also he emphasized when parents are already stabled in doing meaningful work, their children will get automatically many opportunities to excel in their career.

HARLAN, KENTUCKY

Chapter number 6 Malcolm Gladwell had told the importance of traditional cultures and its legacy in determining success. He mentioned about a place called Harlan a small town in Kentucky. There was a feud in between two families which results in bloodsheds mostly. And not only this it was noticed that the whole mountain region has this pattern of fights with in families that are living there because there for father was Scots-Irish Herdsman known to be barbarians. So, that people respect them and would be fearful and not steal their herd’s animals. So, traditional legacy must transfer to their descendants.

THE ETHNIC THEORY OF PLAN CRASHES

This chapter number 7, author mentioned the story about Korean air crashes. In 80’s and 90’s there were too many crashes in Korean airline did not result from any major problem but resulted from many minors one like tired pilots, bad weather, new staff, poor communication between the pilots but from 1991 they had acknowledged their problem and improved and immerged as the safest airline in the world up till now. So, in this culture legacy again played an important role.

Practice, Meaningful Work And Opportunities As The Ways To Success In The Book Outliers

I recently read the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. In the book, the author discusses how success is more about collaboration and hard work than intelligence. As a result, professional achievement and advancement are available to those who work hard and pursue each opportunity they find. This book has informed me of how I can make changes in my own life: discover my passions about and practice them feverously, be in an environment that encourages learning and creativity, and surround myself with supportive people. I believe there are several theories discussed in the book that are relevant to my potential MBA education.

One of the most important lessons throughout the book is the value of hard work. In order to be great at anything you have to put in the time and effort to improve. Gladwell’s theorizes that success is associated more with hard work than talent or intelligence. I strongly agree with this theory. The most successful people work a great deal harder than those who are less successful. Gladwell argues that the 10,000 hour rule is what separates the good from the truly great in any field. In order to master a skill, you need to invest 10,000 hours, that is three hours of work per day or 20 hours per week for ten years. He credits the success of prodigies like Bill Gates, Mozart and the Beatles to this rule. Gates, certainly had a knack for computing, but in the end his successes were a result of his 10,000 hours of hard work.

At first glance, the hour rule may seem unattainable for someone looking to start a new career or develop a new skill. It is important for people to realize they can reinvent themselves and that being good at something does not require an innate gift. The hour rule verifies that a person can change; he or she just has to put in the necessary time to master their skills. This is exactly the type of mentality and hard work I intend to bring to my studies if accepted into the MBA program. Being a student in the MBA program at USC would also give me an advantage in building experience hours, as I hope to become an expert in marketing and master the skills necessary to be a success.

Building upon the values of hard work and practice, Gladwell explains the importance of meaningful work. In short, meaningful work drives mastery. The quote “It’s not how much money we make that ultimately makes us happy between nine and five. It’s whether or not our work fulfills us,” really resonated with me. When a person feels that there is a purpose to his or her work, he or she are more likely to work harder, put in the hours and become a master of their practice. Gladwell’s discussion of this theory has inspired me to find meaningful work and I believe that an MBA education is a means to create more meaningful work in my life. From the book, it is clear that people who engage in meaningful work are not defeated by inevitable obstacles they encounter because there is a deep connection between effort and reward in his or her work. Moreover, he or she is able to push forward and remain committed, as they know their hard work will pay off in the end.

Equally important to hard work, Gladwell explains the significance of opportunities in his formula for success. It is one thing to be given amazing opportunities for success, it is another to make the most of those opportunities. In short, when an opportunity presents itself, seize it. I believe an individual’s ability to identify and grasp opportunities and then use his or her talents to capitalize on those opportunities is a valuable skill for a student in an academic setting. The book has encouraged me to find opportunities where I can dive into learning, put myself on the line, invest time in my passions, and achieve my goals.

It is refreshing and eye opening how Gladwell reveals the various elements that shape our success – practice, meaningful work, and opportunities. There are ups and downs in life that influence peoples’ lives for better or worse, providing more opportunities for some than others. Even though there may be not be an even playing field in regards to opportunities, Outliers, demonstrates that an individual who is ready and willing to put in the work has a genuine chance at experiencing success in life. I hope to live by this example and prove to be diligent, hardworking and optimistic in this next chapter of my education.

The Factors Leading To Success In The Book Outliers

It is safe to say that success is everyone’s goal in life. Throughout the book Outliers written by Malcolm Gladwell, there were different factors stated that would lead to success. Many of those will be stated and discussed throughout this essay. Some of the factors that contribute to success are the 10,000 rule, properly coping with failure, the idea that head start leads to more, and especially access to resources. Each of these concepts allowed many people like The Beatles, Bill Joy, Bill Gates, and etc., to able to succeed as much as they did.

The first factor that is going to be discussed is the 10,000-hour rule. It is basically the belief that it takes 10,000 hours in order to become a master at a skill or hobby. There are many examples of well-known people that spent well over those hours and were able to flourish in their careers. The Beatles is the perfect model of this rule. Before they came to America, the group was playing multiple gigs throughout the United Kingdom. In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell stated, “All told, they performed for 270 nights in just over a year and a half. By the time they had their first burst of success, in 1964, in fact, they had performed live an estimated twelve hundred times” (50). Twelve hundred times. That is definitely impressive, especially since it was before they became popular, so just imagine how many hours throughout their entire career, way past 10,000 hours for sure. But there are limits as to how far this rule can be. Talent takes up a large part about what it takes to be a master at something. Not anybody can simply just put in 10,000 hours into a skill and expect to be as skillful as the person that was born with that talent. An article stated, “In the study, the authors rejected an important role for natural talent and argued that differences in ability, even among top musicians, were largely down to how much they practiced. Gladwell seized on the round number to explain the success of notables from Bill Gates to the Beatles”(Sample, 2019). In the book, Gladwell made it seem that anybody can be a master at anything. He fails to mention anything else. But the truth is that everyone is not meant to do anything in life, and in order to be successful, one must realize that. The following examples were all successful because of their practice and talent.

In life, when trying to succeed in life, everyone is going to make a mistake or go through a failure one way or another. That is normal. But it is significant to be able to cope with that failure properly and in a way where one would learn from it and prevent from it ever happening again. Many people think that making a mistake or having failure is the automatic pass to give up, so they try to avoid it and end up just playing it safe the entire time. When playing safe, nobody learns anything since they are not challenging themselves. An article stated, “We have parents calling in and saying, for their kids, ‘Can’t you just give them two more days on this paper?’ Overindulging kids, with the intention of giving them everything and being loving, but at the expense of their character — that’s huge in our population. I think that’s one of the biggest problems we have at Riverdale”(Tough, 2011). This quote focuses on how parents would always try to get their children to have the best grades without paying attention to what their child is doing wrong. They do not realize it at the moment, but they are really doing damage. The students are not able to learn from their academic mistakes, and it is not even their fault. Another thing people do not realize is that they learn best when they are making those mistakes and failures. The same article stated, “Randolph says that the character strengths that enabled him to achieve the success… they came out of those years of trial and error, of taking chances and living without a safety net” (Tough, 2011). A real-life example is from Dominic Randolph, the headmaster of Riverdale County School, the school where the parents from the previous example enroll their children in. Throughout the article, Randolph explains his whole journey of success and mentions his years at Harvard. Even though Harvard is known as one of the most prestigious universities in the world, he felt he did not feel like it was completing his capabilities. After two years he dropped out and went through a number of different jobs and occupations. Now looking back, he is glad he went through that and wishes parents would allow their children to go through their mistakes. Everyone’s goal to react to failure should be to take the bullet, work harder, and to continue to focus on the aim.

When a child is born, one would think that they have an equal chance of being successful in life. But in the book, Outliers, readers learn that something as simple as someone’s birthday can affect their chance of being prosperous in the future. The chapter starts off with a given chart demonstrating all of the players of the 2007 Medicine Hat Tigers hockey team in Canada with their birthdays. At first, nothing looks out of place, teammates that are close in age, pretty normal. But the crazy part is that a large percentage of the players were born in January, February, and March. It was not only in hockey. Another chart was given that showed the birthdays of the players of the 2007 Czech National Junior soccer team. An explanation was given in the book. It stated, “It’s simply that in Canada the eligibility cutoff for all age-class hockey is January 1”(24). Gladwell continues to explain how children that were born at the beginning of the year have the advantage of just being a few months older than kids that were born at the end of the year. No one would think a few months have that type of effect but it does because people allow it to be. The book also stated, “And they put the older kids in the advanced stream, where they learn better skills; and the next year, because they are in the higher groups, they do even better; and the next year, the same thing happens, and they do even better again.” (29). Gladwell was explaining about students and their academics but it is the same pattern and concept. People often make the assumption that the older someone is, the more skillful that person is. Then that assumption is made into action when children that are older are chosen to be focused more on and eventually that child will become more skillful. Unfortunately, this factor to success is not something anyone can control and really only has to do with pure luck someone has regarding their birthday. But that is not a give up pass to anyone that wishes to be successful in that field.

The most significant factor that leads to success is access to resources. This factor allowed current millionaires and billionaires to be as successful as they are today and they all ended up being one of the most influential people of all time. Bill Joy is one of them. Today he is an American software developer, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the computer manufacturer Sun Microsystems and is worth 1.5 billion dollars. All of this happened for him because of all the practice he was able to get from his surroundings. The novel Outliers stated, “He programmed whenever he could. Joy got a job with a computer science professor so he could program over the summer. In 1975, he enrolled in graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley. There, he buried himself even deeper in the world of computer software”(36). Bill Joy was absolutely obsessed with the computer center at his college, University of Michigan. Joy was extremely lucky to have access to it during his teenage years, especially since it was the 1970s where computers and technology were just being introduced into the world. The novel also stated, “Just look at the stream of opportunities that came Bill Joy’s way… Bill Joy was brilliant. He wanted to learn. That was a big part of it. But before he could become an expert, someone had to give him the opportunity to learn how to be an expert” (46). Throughout Joy’s childhood, he was always called bright and curious and was always longing to learn something new every day. But in life that is not enough. People like him would need access to resources to challenge their wisdom and to be discovered. Fortunately, Joy got that access and was able to get that practice that eventually helped him be the man he is today.

Another person that ended up being a billionaire and an influential person is Bill Gates. He is an American business magnate, investor, author, philanthropist, humanitarian, and the founder of the Microsoft Corporation and is worth over one billion dollars today. While growing up, Gates lived in a wealthy family in Seattle. His parents always paid much attention to their genius son and provided him lots of opportunities. In the novel, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell stated, “As a child Bill was precocious and easily bored by his studies. So his parents took him out of public school and, at the beginning of seventh grade, sent him to Lakeside, a private school that catered to Seattle’s elite families” (50). Gladwell continues to explain how at Lakeside a computer club was made and that is when Gates got hooked. Gates was even younger than Joy when he first got exposed to computers and coding. He was an extremely lucky boy since at this time using computers was new to society and expensive to do and somehow was able to get money. When he did not have that money he would always find an alternative and often got in trouble throughout his teenage and college years. Gates did all this just to have the opportunities and access to resources. All of the hours of practice helped him become the coding genius he is today.

Overall, the factors that lead to success are the 10,000-hour rule, appropriately coping with failure, that having a head start leads to more opportunities, and especially access to resources. From this research, readers should learn that there is not just one journey for success that each person should follow. Each success story is unique, so do not try to copy someone else’s. All of this information is significant because it gives many examples of special story of the most influential people like the Beatles, Bill Joy, and Bill Gates. Hopefully, this research inspires someone to get up and work for their success story.

Outliers: Quotes Analysis

Warrant: Malcolm Gladwell groups his case studies into 2 groups of similar individuals like parallelism, people who’ve gained success through luck or opportunities. Malcolm Gladwell says that Oppenheimer knew how to navigate the world and make success for himself in a way that Chris Langen didn’t. Also says Chris Langan and Robert Oppenheimer have similar talents but radically different levels of success and recognition and how they gained success.

Strategy 2– Malcolm Gladwell uses questions to pique our interest to keep us thinking about the traits that most outliers/successful people have.

Warrant: This rhetorical question “Or are they” amends us to think about his statement if players are judged by performance or not. It starts to transition into the next paragraph about outliers and who they are.
