My Motivation for a Scholarship to Study Nursing in Croatia

My passion to pursue a career in nursing was largely contributed to my volunteer experience at Kenol and Exotic Private Hospital, where I worked as a health educator and health care assistant. In this position I had sole responsibility for taking care of some patients’ daily needs, such as cleaning, feeding, exercise and educating them on how to live, improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Through this hands-on experience, I learned the importance of service to humanity and developed a positive attitude towards improving the lives of people. In the hospital where I worked, I witnessed the way nurses carry out their duties with love, care and respect towards patients, this further motivate me to seek a career working with patients, therefore becoming a nurse is the logical choice to meet this ambition.

Also, with the basic knowledge of biology from my previous biology class, I got attracted to human reproduction, anatomy, and how drugs interact with human body. Over the years my huge concern has been how people with chronic disease can survive, but I later learned that nurses play instrumental in ensuring they become stable.

I researched and found out that Croatia is one of the best study destinations in Europe with world-class education as well as a multicultural country. Getting this scholarship opportunity to study and graduate as nurse in Croatia will not only equip me with knowledge, but will help me explore and solve complex societal problems both at home and abroad, also provide me with skills needed for the modern challenges and problem-solving strategies.

My dedication to study nursing is immeasurable. I have encountered many of the emotional and physical challenges involved in nursing career. I intend to further my master’s degree in nursing after my BSC in nursing to gain more knowledge in maternal, adult, intensive care and child care nurse. I am confident that I will achieve my goal of becoming a successful nurse, who will offer help to people in pain as nurses play a vital role in caring for patients, and I believe this scholarship will help me achieve this goal of mine. I am committed to give back to my community from my international experience, thereby bringing a positive impact to people. Furthermore, I want to establish a non-profit organization where I can provide internship to nursing and other medical students among my community and allow them to travel to isolated communities in the world to provide free medical services to people. Also, I will take part in enlightening them on nutrition education, disease control and preventive measure. I will work together in a team with other qualified health professionals to bring out the best possible outcome to people, especially patients.

My Aspiration to Study Nursing in Australia

From a very small, I always wanted take care of others especially my grandparents, I will always do small treatments for them, for instance, I will apply balm in their forehead if they experience a headache. When I grew up my treatments also grew. Now I am the one who injects my grandfather insulin as he is a diabetic patient. And I also believe that doing the job which makes me happy and satisfied is the way to lead a successful life rather than choosing a job with high salary. That passion in me, lead me this far to choose nursing as my career option. I can assure that I will be a good nurse in treating and taking care of patients.

I have completed my high school from Seraphic Convent Girls High School in the year 2018 with a result of above 95%. In the year 2020, I have completed my higher secondary education with 95.5% at St. Antony’s HSS in Puthenpeedika. And currently I am pursuing BSC Mathematics at St. Thomas College in Thrissur.

I always wanted to study abroad, but unfortunately, I did not get an opportunity to go or study aboard. Sunday Adelaja once said, “Everything has its own time”, so now is the time for me to try my luck and try to get an opportunity to study abroad on a scholarship program. Also, in Australia I can get a bachelor’s degree in Nursing in just three years and I’ll get a job right after I finish the course. Compared to India, nurses are more respected in Australia than in India.

I have come to know that Australia can offer a better standard of education than in India. According to Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. So, I believe that such a weapon needs to be of better quality and also from one of the best universities in the world, that is why I opted Queensland University of Technology, which is the 176th ranked university in the world.

Australia is one of best countries that offers students high quality education with very well updated teaching methods and with a very latest technology. While studying at Australia, it not only offers a better education, but also provides chances to meet and understand different cultures as students from all over the world would be there. One of the main attractions is students can also work while they study. Most of the countries encourage such methods, but in India it is not encouraged that much.

All the human beings have only one life, so everyone will wish for a high quality of life, and for me Australia is the best place. Also, Australia is the second best country in providing a high quality life for people. I have never been to Australia, so I have a limited knowledge and lots of dreams about Australia. And I also hope and believe that all those in my mind will come true someday.

Why I choose Western Sydney University to do my undergraduate program is because after a lot of research I come to know that it is best university that meets all my priorities. For instance, I want to study in a world-class university with a good ranking and globally recognized for their research strengths and innovation in teaching. All these are more than enough for student to opt Western Sydney University for their education. Also, after checking Studyportals and reading all the positive reviews from students, I fixed Western Sydney University as the best place for me to do my bachelor’s program. I really hope to get the opportunity to study at your institution and realize all my goals.

Desire to Study Adult Nursing

My desire to study adult nursing started when I volunteered at Keech Hospice for my Duke of Edinburgh bronze award in year 11. At this end of life care home, which looked after my cousin in his last moments, I realised how extraordinary nurses really are as I witnessed it first-hand. Nurses that would do everything in their power to make a patient feel better emotionally and physically. That is what I hope to be able to do and provide extraordinary care every day. Maybe someday I can be an inspiration to others to strive for a higher level of care just as those I look up to were for me. During this time I loved engaging in conversation with the patients and developing relationships with these people that had so many lovely stories that I enjoyed listening to.

It was then that I realised I had a talent for providing support to those who needed it and giving an ear for those who just needed someone to listen. I also believe I am good at making people feel at ease when anxious as I have experienced a lot of concerned and somewhat angry customers in my previous job roles, such as front of house staff in a pub, when customers made clear their worries or distaste I would always make sure they were sorted straight away with some sort of solution that benefitted them. I also run my own lash extension business which sees me talking to a lot of customers about their day and a lot of the time their worries in life and better my interpersonal skills. With this experience I believe it has made realise that my bubbly personality and ability to listen and give advice is something needed in nursing when patients just need someone to talk to. Itruly enjoy working directly with people which is one of the reasons I have decided on this career path. I realise that nursing is a profession for life. Once you become a nurse you are a nurse for the rest of your life. It will influence the way you act and think, the way you see the world around you. I feel I am ready to embark on this profession and the way of life it entails.

My interest and previous A level in psychology I believe will help in my study of adult nursing as I loved to learn about the anatomy and physiology of the human body. By becoming a nurse I look forward to helping those not only physically but mentally and aid them into recovery. As just being kind to those who are in need can help their day be better even if it just be for the time you’re with them. I’ve seen this first hand as my parents are foster parents and have taken in children who aren’t as fortunate with a safe home environment. Just that little bit of respite through the week made their childhood a better one to remember as nurses involves bettering the welfare of the paitent. This also gave me the urge to become a nurse as I recognised that not everyone is as lucky as I am to have a stable home and I strongly believe I want to use this to help those who haven’t as I recognise nurses are there through all stages of life.

The scientific and academic side of nursing is as engaging to me as the caregiving duties of the profession, one of the aspects of studying nursing that appeals to me in particular is the balance between theoretical learning and its practical application. My experience with clinical skills may be low now but I look forward to tackling this. My mother is a phlebotomist and has given me some insight into the skills required. I am also an avid blood donator to the blood bank and have encouraged all my friends and family to also do so as such a little thing has saved lives.

I have recently finished reading ‘The Student Nurse Handbook’ by Bethan Siviter. From reading this book I have had a useful insight into what it is like to be a student nurse. I have learnt about medical terminology, nursing models, nursing theories and clinical placements. I also watch lots of Youtube videos on student nurses ‘day in their lives’ and have gained some valuable knowledge and how to distress and cope with the large responsibilities. Your own mental and physical state is very important as without this you can’t provide the best care that needs to be given. I understand that when I become a nurse this will be even more important as being a nurse can be stressful and emotionally challenging, I find it easiest to relax and unwind by playing team sports and listening to music. Since a young age I have taken part in Netball and Hockey as well as lacrosse and tennis in school teams. As I have grown up I have kept my passion and continue to play team Netball and Hockey for my county. This shows my ability to work within a team which is also vital in nursing, to communicate and address issues and gratification is important.

I wholeheartedly embrace the philosophy that underpins the NHS and I would feel honoured to be able to care for people through working within it. From what I have learnt about the NHS it is an organisation that welcomes individuals who are eager to progress to positions of greater responsibility and acquire extra skills by taking on extra duties, spurred on by their personal drive and commitment. The dire need for nurses in this country is one that is shocking and needed and I hope to help to be a solution to that and therefore improve the already amazing but calling out for help NHS. The nature of nursing also demands a person who loves to work with a diverse range of people, act professionally when working under pressure and continue to learn on the job as they do so. I feel that I would thrive in this environment and I would hope one day to become an adult nurse.

Mental Health Nursing Personal Statement

I first became passionate in pursuing a career in nursing when I was about fifteen years old. This was influenced by the fact that I spent a lot of time in the hospital either because I was admitted there, looking after my mother, or looking after a family member. The care that the nurses gave to people they barely knew was what inspired me. It left a vacuum in my heart that needed to be filled. The last time I stayed at the hospital was when my mother was admitted. She was there for three months after she was diagnosed of cancer of the lungs. During my stay at the hospital, I decided to support the nurses, that is, when it is time for them to do rounds, I followed them around with their trolley and passed unto them what they need to administer drips, or medication to patients. While doing that I practically learned how to give injection to someone and to take blood. Before my mother was discharged from the hospital, she was given sixty injections to be administered every morning at 5:00 am. They were times that the nurse didn’t turn up and I had to administer it myself. My mother then said to me: ‘It will be a good idea for you to do nursing as there is always someone who is ill in the family and you are was always the one pick to take them to the hospital’. I do enjoy caring for people in general and not just my family. It gives me a lot of satisfaction. My happiness in general relies on how I treat people and how they react towards it. To be honest I admire the nurses and in due course I will be a fully qualified mental health nurse.

When I finished my A levels, my plans were to go into nursing straightaway but there were no funds available until now that I can pursue my dreams. However, among the different areas of nursing my decision to pick mental health is influence by my own poor mental health. When I came to the UK, I claimed asylum and the process took up to four years before I was granted a resident permit. I was diagnosed of anxiety and depressive disorder. The best thing that could happen to me during that period was to commit suicide. I overcome my challenges and decided to go and volunteer with a local charity that support asylum seekers and refugees on a screening desk and with another charity that helps people with tinnitus as an administrator. During this period, I became optimistic and started to see life in a different way. Helping those people was what boost me up and because of this I picked mental health to give hope to other people in similar situation. I believe that the fact that I have experience it will give me a better understanding of my career. Like the great Roman leader Julius Caesar recorded the earliest known proverb ‘Experience is the best teacher’. Having experienced mental health problems and now choosing a career in this path to broaden my knowledge will give me the right skills and ability to relate to the patients excellently. If a patient should complaint about the thought of committing suicide, I can relate to how they are feeling as I have had this thought before. I am currently on a health science access course and so far, I have learned how the heart functions, and this is essential to mental health. The temporary state of depression, anxiety or more severe cases can influence the way the heart function which can increase the blood pressure or increased heart rate. I am also taking a part time job as a health care assistant. It’s a one to one care.

On a typical day at work I will assist the service user with personal care, asked them how they are feeling that day, what they would like to eat giving them the option to choose from a variety. I assist patients with mental health problem, dementia, Parkinson disease. There are difficult days and difficult clients. It takes a lot of courage, patience to support vulnerable patients of which I know I possess. I consider myself to be very determined, friendly and easy to get along with anyone. I take everything I do seriously and enthusiastically.

After my degree, I will apply for a job in the hospital and work as mental health nurse or join the army. I believe that I possess the determination to enrol on to this course.

Child Nursing Personal Statement

I want to study ‘Child Nursing’ because I have a very adaptable approach in speaking to children and adults. I am a caring, committed and motivated individual who has also a good understanding of equality and diversity. I am able to solve and respond to stressful and hectic situations confidently and calmly. Although the role of work can be difficult and demanding at times, I am ready to challenge my abilities and meet the requirements of the course. Therefore, I see myself studying ‘Children’s Nursing’ in the future, which will be an ideal career path for me to take as it interests me.

I am aware of my duties, which will include: supporting and counselling children, ethical decision making, expressing sympathy and empathy towards children and their families etc. The reward for providing each child with love, attention, and support would be greater than the risk since I would oversee saving many lives.

I have studied Human Science in Belgium which is equivalent to A levels and this will give me a clear understanding of the human body and the parts of the body, for example; how to dress a wound, etc. I studied Science in school, which covered many different subjects, such as: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Geography, ICT, Music, and Maths, which I all enjoyed very much. My entire syllabus was in Dutch, along with that I had English and French as my subjects. Therefore, I consider myself multilingual and the course that I studied was equivalent to GCSEs. I successfully acquired a work shadowing placement at ZNA Antwerp hospital, I experienced and witnessed the remarkable work of surgeons alongside nurses to operate on patients. My placement helped me realize the importance of nurses and how clinical procedures owe their success to their diligent work. I extremely consider myself privileged to gain the opportunity to spend the time with many qualified professionals. I have currently studied BTEC International ICT Level 3 and I gained my qualification in 2019. Studying Information Technology gave me a very broad knowledge about the IT world and how it can be utilized in many factors which also includes children’s nursing.

I am working with an NGO based in London called Al-Khair Foundation. My role as a call centre operative is to take donations and attend the consultations/reports of the donors and I have also worked in the fast, which made me impressively energetic and do multi-tasks. I have been working in retail for nearly 4 years as an assistant/client advisor, this encouraged me to be independent and exercise my endurance leadership and teamwork. Hence, I can practise these skills in child nursing as I will be prepared to expect long shifts including weekends and holidays. Daily communication over the phone with the donors and working in the shop floor as assistant/cashier enhanced my speaking skills and improved my level of confidence which is very essential as I will be communicating with children and parents different age and background. In my spare time, I have contributed my time volunteering with UNICEF UK ‘the steering group’ in Croydon College. Working with UNICEF UK and very supportive and amazing team leaders inspired me to study child nursing as it involved various activities with children in need. It also provided me with excellent leadership and teamwork skills which I will be using in child nursing. I have acquired many skills when working with people of different ethnicities and cultures and, therefore, I have managed to obtain a certificate of equality and diversity in the community.

I believe that I am a suitable student to study children’s nursing and I am very much looking forward to the new academic year to start as I also believe that I will be a pleasant face to your university and by working hard I will successfully achieve my goals.

Passion to Be a Nurse

Nursing is a career that I would have never seen myself, until I realized along the way that it is where I belong. I have always been the kind of person who needs to help. I tend to go out of my way and in many instances put others’ before myself. This is just in my nature to do so. I never ask for a reward in return, I choose to help because everyone needs to know that they are not alone and that there are good people in this world that want to help.

For as long as I could recall, I was determined of following my dream of joining the army because I would be helping my country and the millions living in it by being a part of something that big. I was involved in a handful of sports because it taught me many skills that I knew I needed in the future. I learned to communicate with my teammates and to be confident in my skills, but knew there was always room for improvement. Every day was a challenge and I knew it was only going to make me better. I gave it my all every time and I grew stronger and closer to my dream with every step I took. Unfortunately, while I grew stronger and focused on where I wanted to be, my mother began getting weaker and eventually became too ill to do anything. This is when my career path was changed.

It was because of what happened to my mother and how helpless we felt that I decided I wanted to join the medical field. We had countless visits to our doctor, and emergency rooms that we became fairly known by the doctors, nurses, security, and other staff working. Although we always felt welcomed, this honestly aggravated me. I would ask myself: ‘Why is this happening to us?’. I would tell myself that all the personnel working in the hospital shouldn’t know our names because we should not be going through this. After some time, I learned to cope with it because I understood that things happen, and some things are out of my control, but I can do my best to support my mother. It was during this moment that I decided I wanted to join the medical field because it would help me not only understand what was going on with my mother, but also be able to help her in the long run. All the doctors who helped us out were amazing, but I can honestly say that all the nurses that helped us are the ones who truly gave us hope. When deciding I wanted to join the medical field, I decided to become a doctor, but as our relationship with the nurses grew stronger, I knew I needed to become a nurse. Doctors would come in and out, but the nurses would make us feel supported.

When beginning to attend Los Angeles Community College, I followed the articulation path that would enable me to complete the prerequisites required to transfer to a nursing program. During my courses and throughout life, I learned many valuable skills that would be transferable to nursing. I had the opportunity to volunteer at Kaiser Permanente and realized in my short time there that I truly had to work as hard as I could to be a part of that atmosphere. I could feel how truly passionate those nurses I saw were about their career and I saw myself in them. I suffered a broken ankle during the beginning of my volunteering that prohibited me from moving forward with my volunteering, but I learned a handful of skills from many nurses in various departments that I will use for when my time comes. I noted and acquired their critical thinking skills and attention to detail that are important factors when determining the level of care a patient requires. Being that I am a curious individual and am always seeking more knowledge, I asked questions during the appropriate times to gain as much knowledge as I could to become as great as I know I am capable of being.

I want to become a nurse and do what those nurses did for us for others. I genuinely want to make a difference in people’s lives and I know I have the characteristics and commitment to do so. I am ready and eager to pursue a career that asks for dedicated, compassionate, and trusting individuals to assist patients and their families through difficult times.
