Ana H.
Respiratory function is crucial for sustaining life, as it facilitates the supply of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide in the body. While smoking and pathological conditions are well-known factors that can impact respiratory function, there are other factors that can also directly affect this essential bodily process. In this discussion, we will explore three additional factors that can influence respiratory function and support these factors with evidence-based findings.
One key factor that can affect respiratory function is air pollution. Exposure to air pollutants such as particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide has been linked to respiratory problems, including decreased lung function and increased risk of respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Studies have shown that long-term exposure to air pollution can lead to respiratory inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired lung development (Bowatte et al., 2021).
Another factor that can impact respiratory function is physical activity levels. Regular physical activity has been associated with improved lung function and respiratory efficiency. Engaging in aerobic exercises can strengthen respiratory muscles, increase lung capacity, and enhance oxygen uptake efficiency. Research has demonstrated that individuals who maintain an active lifestyle have better respiratory function and reduced risk of respiratory illnesses (Shephard et al., 2020).
Lastly, diet and nutrition play a critical role in respiratory health. Nutrient-rich foods that are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can support lung function and respiratory health. Conversely, a poor diet high in processed foods, saturated fats, and sugar can contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired lung function. Studies have indicated that a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help maintain optimal respiratory function and reduce the risk of respiratory diseases (Butler et al., 2023).
In conclusion, respiratory function is influenced by numerous factors beyond smoking and pathological conditions. Air pollution, physical activity levels, and diet/nutrition are important determinants of respiratory health, with evidence supporting their impact on lung function and overall well-being. By addressing these factors and promoting healthy lifestyle choices, individuals can optimize their respiratory function and support their overall health and quality of life.

Adverse Childhood Experiences: What is an Ounce of Prevention Worth?
Systematic discrimination, segregation, and racism are the direct effects of redlining laws the exacerbate poverty and increase risk behavior, namely substance abuse, gang violence, and early sexual activities among underserved members of my community (Abi Deivanayagam, 2023). Studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and World Bank support the establishment that intensive redlining laws create breeding grounds for poverty, illiteracy, and inequality through systematic discrimination and segregation in employment, education, housing access, and healthcare among minority racial and ethnic groups.
Risk-Related Behaviors among Adolescents in the Community
Substance Abuse
The number of young people engaging in substance abuse, alcoholism, marijuana, tobacco, and other banned drugs is high in my community because of a litany of factors, including, but not limited to poverty, unemployment, and peer-pressure among others. Based on the findings by National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), young people from low-income and underserved community face higher risks of engaging in drug abuse as means of coping with the economic and social challenges that they experience in their households and communities (Abi Deivanayagam, 2023). Risks associated with substance abuse among young people in community include, lower academic outcomes, mental health issues, diseases, and death because of overdose and others (Burrell et al., 2020). In the long-run, adolescents who abuse drugs struggle in their adulthood with poverty and chronic medical conditions associated with drugs, such as lung cancer from smoking, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases among other.
Gang Involvement
Gangs are common in my community, and they are responsible for the high rates of incarcerations of young people, gun violence, and crime. Involvement in gang activities exposes young people in the community to a litany of risks and challenges (Schell et al., 2020). One of the major risks involved with gangs is engagement in criminal activities, rape, robbery, murder, and other capital offences (Burrell et al., 2020). In my community and throughout the country, the majority of juvenile offenders and adults in prisons are from the underserved minority ethnic and racial groups.
Early Sexual Activity
As much both young men and women suffer from systematic inequalities resulting from redlining policies, systematic segregation, and racism (Sullivan et al., 2023). The main unique challenge that girls face, unlike boys is that they become objects of sex for survival (Burrell et al., 2020). The rate of teenage pregnancies is higher among members of marginalized communities than it is the case for the members of the majority ethnic and racial communities (Abi Deivanayagam, 2023). Early exposure to sexual activities is one of the leading causes of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/Aids and others that are prevalent in my community, especially among girls from ethnic minority groups.
Antecedent Factors Manifested in Adulthood
Substance Abuse
The initiation into substance abuse at an early age makes an individual prone to addiction, psychological problems and poor health as they grow up (Burrell et al., 2020). Such people may fail to sustain employment statuses, and hence social relationships, which translates to more socio-economic fluctuations.
Gang Involvement
Youth in gangs are more likely to be involved in crimes as well as face violent situations and, therefore, are likely to face legal consequences, imprisonment, and traumas in young adulthood (Burrell et al., 2020). The escalation of violence and crime allows an individual to interact with criminal activity in present and future generations continuously.
Early Sexual Activity
Youth who indulge in sexual activities at a youthful age are likely to be pregnant, get STIs, become poor and sick when they grow up (Schell et al., 2020). Such problems can limit their capacity to help themselves and their households, thus experiencing poverty and diseases repeatedly (Burrell et al., 2020).
Sources of Information
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
U.S. Department of Justice
Conclusion
The prevention of risk related behaviors and the interventions applied with and for adolescents can positively affect the quality of life of teens in the long run. To address these risks, more resources should be channeled towards community programs addressing education, mental health, as well as positive modeling among the youthful persons.

Factors Affecting Respiratory Function
As one of the most vital and primary human activities, respiratory function is much more than just the process of breathing. Besides smoking and pathological conditions, there are several factors that determine the efficiency of respiratory tracts in our bodies. Age, environmental pollution, and physical activity levels play a significant role in how our lungs work and how efficiently the human body breaks down oxygen. It is crucial to comprehend these factors to fully appreciate the complexity of respiratory health and acknowledge the significance of proper lung functioning during individuals’ lifetime.
Age is an important determinant of respiratory function at all stages of human life. Lung capacity also decreases with age because of different changes that occur in the human body (Galletti & de Paiva, 2021). These include lung elasticity which has been shown to reduce with age resulting in reduced lung compliance and increased residual volume. According to Bai et al. (2023), FEV1 declines by about 20-30 mL annually in healthy adult people who are 25 years and above. Age further affects respiration efficiency, which may lead to increased vulnerability of older people to respiratory infections and diseases. Also, the capacity to breathe is reduced due to reduced respiratory muscle strength, particularly the diaphragm, as people age. The alveoli are tiny sacs in the lungs capable of exchanging gases; their walls become less elastic and may even rupture more frequently in older adults. All these changes acting in concert lead to decreased lung capacity and reduced efficiency in the clearance of secretions that predispose the aging population to respiratory complications.
Another major factor that has a direct impact on respiratory function is the pollution of the environment. Particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide are some common air pollutants that affect respiratory health in the short term and over a long period (Santos, 2021). A meta-analysis of observational studies reported in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine also showed that long-term exposure to air pollutants slows down the growth of lung function in children and speeds up the decline in lung function in adults. Also, acute exposure to air pollution has been found to cause worsening of asthma symptoms and respiratory infections. The study’s results also highlight the significance of air quality control in promoting respiratory well-being.
Physical activity levels are also critical determinants of respiratory health. It has been established that exercise training enhances lung volumes, respiratory muscle pumps, and respiratory system efficiency. According to Nieman and Sakaguchi (2022), endurance training can raise VO2 max by as much as 20% in inactive individuals. On the other hand, the lack of activity results in low lung capacity and weak respiratory muscles. According to the ALA, at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every five days is necessary for adequate lung health.
In conclusion, respiratory function is affected not only by smoking and pathological conditions but by a variety of factors. The respiratory health of people is determined by factors such as age, environmental pollution, and physical activities. Knowledge of these determinants and their effects on lung function is essential in designing approaches to enhance and sustain respiratory health across the lifespan. Alleviating these causes through public health measures, environmental legislation, and encouraging regular exercise can improve respiratory health and general well-being for people of all ages.
