Case Study:
Musab Ahmed, a hardworking family man, invested the money he inherited from his late father in property. With the grace of Allah and the fruitful opportunities of growth in his country, his construction company ‘Consortia’ quickly blossomed to become one of the biggest names in property development. He used his good fortune to bankroll his increased real estate investments in the country. Being a visionary, he established his construction company with the goal of one day passing it down to his children and continuing the family legacy. Musab had a total of four children. Anwar, his eldest son, was from his deceased first wife, while his two other sons, Khurshed and Arshad, and his only daughter Shifa were mothered by his second and current wife.
Anwar, being the eldest, joined the family business shortly after obtaining his university degree. He quickly learned the ins and outs of the business and took his place as the father’s right hand.
Khurshed and Arshad who both acquired university degrees abroad, to the father’s surprise, did not show as much enthusiasm in the family business as their brother Anwar. The environmentally conscious Arshad decided to pursue a master’s degree in environment application. While his elder brother Khurshed had no interest in the family business at all and followed his passion for literature in a career in academia.
Meanwhile, Shifa, the only daughter of Musab, was the most eager child from his second wife to join the family business. Despite her qualification and willingness to work, Musab decided she was best suited to head the marketing department, without a seat on the Board, and no power to make executive decisions regarding the family business. Her mother Aisha kept reassuring Shifa to be patient and that her time would come. Aisha believed that her daughter should be given the same opportunities as her sons. After eight years of Anwar running the family business with his father, Arshad returned from abroad ready and excited to apply his newly acquired, environmentally conscious ideas to the family business.
Anwar and his father rarely ever disagreed. He believed the way the business has been run since its establishment produced excellent results so far and did not require changing. While Anwar’s views were in line with his father’s, Arshad would regularly suggest more innovative ideas and methods in running the business. His father appreciated Arshad’s initiative. However, Anwar, who was more skeptical, believed Arshad was too inexperienced to be pitching such drastic changes.
This frustrated Arshad and he began to feel resentful towards Anwar. Arshad believed Anwar influenced his father’s perception of Arshad’s ideas to be inapplicable and unrealistic. Furthermore, Arshad was convinced that their father favoured Anwar, being his eldest son from his first wife, and that they were not giving his ideas the consideration they deserved.The father caught his sons arguing from time to time but didn’t take it too seriously. After all, they were family and all it took were a few words from him and they would immediately stop for his sake.
A few years later, Musab fell ill. Due to his worsening condition, his doctors and children urged him to step aside from the management of the family business and retire. Musab, however, found it difficult to let go due to the differences between his sons. He was very much aware of Anwar’s experience and market expertise, but he also appreciated Arshad’s drive and innovative ideas. The father believed that Anwar and Arshad could build a strong team if only they learned to work together. However, despite his best efforts, it was futile due to their differences.
The brothers developed the habit of not openly voicing their concerns or feelings at work. As the years went by and the father’s condition deteriorated further, Anwar and Arshad did their best to suppress their negative feelings in order not to upset their father during this sensitive time. Often, they went out of their way to avoid further confrontations in their father’s presence. Consequently, they brought their grievances home with them. Anwar would often complain to his wife of Arshad’s inexperience and immature attitude. While Arshad would tell his sister Shifa about Anwar’s patronizing and stubborn nature. Their unresolved feelings lead to heightened tension during family gatherings, but both chose to avoid confrontation, and neither would acknowledge the situation.
In the meantime, Shifa’s frustration mounted.This was as a result of her father’s previous decision to outcast her from the executive board grew larger. Not only did she feel that her dad believed her inputs were not as valuable as that of her brothers, but she also agreed with Arshad’s opinion of Musab favouring Anwar due to hierarchy. Aware of her position, she would also regularly advise Arshad on key matters regarding the business that Arshad would then voice during executive meetings for his father’s approval. Needing Arshad as a spokesperson of her business ideas, Shifa continuously tried to defuse the situation and calm down frustrated Arshad from leaving the business.
Tensions heightened as Arshad continued to feel his ideas of reform were being overlooked and under-appreciated in the family business. Eventually, with his father’s blessing, he was permitted to pursue them independently. Arshad began to invest in a side business involving renewable energy materials in construction with the family business. The new venture was set up with Arshad as a majority shareholder of 51% of the total shares, while his father owned the remaining 49% of the business.

Gender has long been discussed and studied in leadership because it affects leadership style and effectiveness. Leadership skills are not gendered, but societal traditions, expectations, and biases may influence men’s and women’s leadership approaches, which is a major factor in gender norms and preconceptions. Women leaders face a challenge when expected to be both agentic (aggressive, competitive) and communal (nurturing, assisting). This careful balance must be maintained to avoid unwanted views or retaliation from affected parties. Due to increased scrutiny and pressure, women may choose a democratic, participative, and transformational leadership style to meet societal expectations because of the spotlight on them.
Research also shows that men and women in decision-making roles communicate differently. Women are more inclusive, collaborative, and relationship-focused than men, who are more directive and task-oriented (Mashele & Alagidede, 2022). These differences may affect how leaders are regarded and their capacity to motivate and involve others. Balance between work and personal life is another important aspect of a leader’s strategy, especially for women. Female executives may find it harder to balance work and life. This may inspire them to prioritize team members’ needs, including adaptation, understanding, and support, resulting in a more empathic and insightful leadership style. Additionally, mentorship and influential networks can improve leadership abilities and effectiveness. Women in leadership roles may need more mentorship and influential networks, which may limit their career advancement and expose them to more leadership tactics and approaches.
In conclusion, gender equality has improved, but many companies still discriminate against women. This complicates things for female executives. These stereotypes include underestimating women’s talents, preventing women from holding authority, and unfairly criticizing and inspecting women.
Regarding best practices for leading virtual teams with considerations for female leaders in KSA
Women leaders in Saudi Arabia (KSA) face cultural hurdles in addition to virtual team management. Due to this situation, many best practices must be implemented to ensure effective leadership. Establishing effective communication channels is vital. Regular virtual team meetings, collaboration technology, and open communication can boost engagement and teamwork in a virtual environment. Saudi Arabian women leaders must use technology to share documents and communicate internationally (Alhassan & Al Doghan, 2022). Promoting empowerment and inclusivity is also crucial. The capacity of Saudi female executives to understand cultural norms and create an environment where team members can speak freely is crucial. To attain this goal, actively seek input, encourage diverse opinions, and provide equal participation opportunities.
Virtual teams need to build trust and accountability due to less face-to-face interactions. Female leaders should be open, set clear objectives, and provide regular feedback to keep the team united and productive. There may be fewer misunderstandings or arguments due to communication or cultural difficulties. Prioritizing work-life integration is crucial, especially for female leaders and team members juggling work and family. Flexibility and assistance can help women balance these tasks, which are unique to them. This attentive and empathetic attitude could create a helpful and welcoming team environment.
Effective virtual team leaders must foster a culture of continual learning and adaptability. Saudi female executives must be abreast of new technology, best practices, and cultural issues. This will keep their leadership style relevant in a changing virtual world. Female leaders can manage remote teams and foster cooperation, productivity, and inclusivity across national and cultural barriers by applying these best practices and considering the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s cultural context.

Having done well as a staff accountant in the accounts payable section of a major industrial firm for several years since his graduation from college, Faisal felt that he had learned much about the “ins” and “outs” of survival in an intensely bureaucratic organization. It is thus not surprising that he was relaxed and unconcerned about his circumstances at the company as he entered the employee lounge to attend the late-afternoon welcoming reception for his new supervisor.
The new manager of accounts payable, Amina, had been transferred to Faisal’s division from a similar position in another subsidiary of the company because of her proven talent for organizing and improving the efficiency of operations there. A no-nonsense type of manager, Amina was experienced and determined to perform her new assignment with the same vigour that had brought her so much success throughout her career.
At the reception, Amina circulated through the room, introducing herself to her new subordinates and asking each of them if they had any suggestions that would help make the payables section a better place to work. When she approached Faisal, he told her about something that had been on his mind lately: that people seemed to him to gain promotions and be given opportunities to work overtime based on who liked them, and not on the quality of their work. In reply, Amina politely stated that she would do everything that she could to see that whatever it was he was referring to would have no place in the team she would lead.
Upon his arrival at work the next day, Faisal received a phone call from Amina’s secretary asking that he meet with his new boss later that morning. To present the impact of gender on leadership, we will address five main points: leadership capabilities, gender-preferred leadership styles, leadership behaviors, people’s perceptions, and social leadership. According to Wilkinson, D. (2021), a recent study by researchers from the University of Central Florida and York University analyzed literature to determine if gender affects leadership effectiveness. The study found that male and female leaders are equally effective in leading teams without significant differences. However, some studies suggest that female leaders tend to adopt a democratic leadership style in stressful situations, while male leaders lean towards an autocratic approach. Nonetheless, most research indicates no significant difference in leadership behavior based on gender. There exists a noticeable discrepancy between the emergence of male and female leaders. Despite possessing comparable leadership effectiveness, men are frequently perceived as having more significant leadership potential than women. This bias can be attributed to either subconscious prejudices or sexism. Women are less inclined to nominate themselves for leadership positions due to two main factors. Firstly, female leaders tend to be more cautious than their male counterparts, affecting their decision-making risk tolerance. Secondly, female leaders are also less likely to engage in self-promotion, as they worry about unfavorable feedback or criticism of their leadership style and choices. Furthermore, research indicates that female leaders have less accurate perceptions of how their leadership skills are evaluated by others, which can also contribute to their reduced likelihood of becoming leaders. Additionally, research has shown that women are generally regarded as superior leaders in situations requiring high interpersonal competence and social leadership, where women tend to score higher than men. In my opinion, Leaders should be evaluated based on their skills and suitability, not gender.
As many organizations continue to adopt remote work, it’s crucial to simplify, optimize, and streamline this new work environment. Managing virtual teams requires a different approach, but with a few helpful tips, this period can be stress-free. First and foremost, it’s essential to hire self-motivated and independent individuals and provide them with the support of their virtual team managers. Remote work isn’t suitable for everyone, so choose individuals who can work well in a remote environment. Next, use effective communication technologies to support your team’s success. With many communication options available, choose a style that works best for your team, supporting formal and informal communications. The third step clearly defines responsibilities, goals, duties, and processes. Ensuring everyone understands expectations and agrees. The fourth step involves monitoring results, with metrics to track progress for work-from-home jobs. Management must monitor the timeliness, caliber, and success of job output to keep everyone focused. Finally, it’s recommended that virtual teams meet in person occasionally to foster face-to-face time. One-on-one meetings with supervisors provide opportunities for learning, questions, and support.
