Introduction: Core Army Values of Integrity and Respect

The third and sixth core army values are two of the most important values to soldiers in the army. Respect is the third core army value of the seven. Respect is a two lane street. Junior soldiers respect their leaders by trusting them to solve problems and not abuse their power, and non commissioned officers trust the junior soldiers to communicate their issues in a quick and efficient manner. When this line of communication and control breaks down, trust breaks down across the entire group involved. With a lack of respect, there is a lack of trust, and with a lack of trust, there is micromanagement, a decrease in overall morale, and a lack of confidence in and among soldiers. Respecting the people that we work with every day promotes trust, increased morale, and cohesion within the working environment.

Integrity: The Validity of One’s Word

Integrity is the sixth core army value. Integrity is the validity of one’s word. Integrity can be eroded through actions, behaviors, and words. With a lack of integrity, that leads to a lack of trust through a failure to follow through with instructions, a failure to be honest, or a failure to maintain a pattern of behavior. This lack of trust can also lead to micromanagement, a decrease in morale, and lackluster work completion.

Consequences of Micromanagement and Lack of Respect and Integrity

These consequences of a lack of respect and integrity can lead to severe outcomes. Micromanagement can lead to longer work days, increased stress, alcoholism, depression, and even heart attacks. When everything a worker is doing is micromanaged, they don’t want to act with initiative to complete tasks for fear of doing it wrong in the eyes of the micromanaging supervisor. This leads to longer work days because the tasks have to get done before we can go home. Being micromanaged increases stress and stress related illnesses. The fear of doing something wrong or not to their liking and the fear of reprisal because of that can exponentially compound. Leading to rapid deterioration of autonomy in workers to avoid the stress involved in making their own decisions. This can lead to past events coming up and creating larger stressors and severely impacting the worker.The most common way to unstress in the military is alcohol. According to research by Trice and Sonnenstuhl done in 1990, this can be attributed to a couple of factors. Social availability at work paradigm contributes to more alcohol consumption for stress related to work when coworkers drink alcohol. Work stressors such as dangerous physical work environments, interpersonal conflict in the workplace, and even low pay increase the risk of alcoholism in workers.Alcoholism, stress illnesses, and long work days can easily exacerbate significant problems like depression and suicidal ideations. This poses a significant problem in the military due to the stress involved, culture of alcohol use, and dangerous situations we work in. This is a factor in most of the 22 suicides every day among military members. Harvard Medical School instructor Jonathan D. Quick co-authored a book titled Preventive Stress Management in Organizations. In it, he says that, “the leadership qualities of ‘bad’ bosses over time exert a heavy toll on employees’ health.” In the Whitehall studies conducted by Sir Michael Marmot, ‘the higher an employee’s rank and autonomy is, the lower their morality is to cardiovascular diseases.’ So basically, the more micromanagement that goes on, the higher the risk for heart attacks are of those being micromanaged.

A lack of respect and integrity between leaders and soldiers can also erode the cohesiveness of a unit. This can lead to increased distrust in leadership, decreased morale, an increase in disrespect between parties involved, a carefree attitude towards consequences, and an increase in the potential for accidents. A distrust in the competence of leadership is extremely damaging to the work environment. Once a soldier distrusts a leaders capabilities, they will avoid going to that leader for anything. They won’t ask for guidance, to talk, or with their problems. This is especially true when the leader throws it back in their face, bringing up a situation later that they knew nothing about and calling names. This destroys any trust in the professionality of their leadership abilities that might have remained. The soldier will avoid confrontation by just straight up avoiding the leader. This can result in a ‘hide to survive’ attitude or ‘look busy to survive’ techniques. This can be characterized by volunteering for tasks a significant distance away, completing busy work just to work, and extended smoke or bathroom breaks. This can create a lot of stress on the soldier, and not good complete the mission stress. This excessive amounts of bad stress will lower morale. Whether for five minutes, or if continued, for five months, lowered morale affects everybody. An unhappy worker just working near happy workers can spread the negative attitude. An unhappy worker works slower because they don’t have the mental capacity to focus on working quicker. So one person’s bad day can turn into everyone’s bad day that just keeps going slowly. When a soldier feels like a leader is unfit to solve problems and get things done, they sometimes bring that up. It usually happens at high stress moments and almost always is immediately denounced as disrespect and threatened with negative actions if they do not fix it. This can make it seem like the soldier does not get to express their side, and that the leader is using their power to silence any opposing views. Thus, the soldier feels like they need to bring it up with others around so their voice is heard in a fair light. This means getting more people involved, which to the leader seems like more disrespect. This will continue until a significant change occurs. When a soldier feels unheard, ignored, and like the leadership is failing, they stop caring about imposed consequences from the leaders. Especially when the soldier should have as much say in a situation as the leader, the soldier will not care about the consequences of not doing it the way the leader wants. This could be written off as forgetfulness, being told to do something else from someone else, or even just an accident. The decreased mental capacity for focusing on work, lack of worrying about consequences, and sometimes other factors like being in a rush so everyone can go home, leads to a severe increase in potential for accidents. Especially in aviation, accidents can be deadly. Accidentally leaving an old chip detector attached after installing a new one, falling asleep while flying, and even just getting incorrect hardware can all end up with deadly consequences.

The dangers and consequences of a lack of respect and integrity are severe and numerous. Ranging from having a bad day to accidentally bringing a helicopter down to purposefully ending a life to get away from the issues, the entire army needs to maintain respect and integrity to avoid collapse.

Rebuilding Respect and Integrity in the Army

Luckily, all is not lost when there is a failure of respect or integrity. Respect can be re-earned by soldiers by doing the right thing, doing what they’re told to, and taking care of issues at the lowest level. Respect can be re-earned by leaders by talking to soldiers without throwing around their authority, by leading by example, and by recognizing when it’s time to be a leader and when it’s time to give some autonomy to the soldiers. Autonomy of soldiers should belong to them when they aren’t at work. When it is time to work, leaders should be at the front, teaching, talking, and guiding. Soldiers should be engaged, excited, and listening. Everyone should want to come to work to better themselves, not worried that they will be chewed out for misstepping or trying to get their point across. Integrity is a little bit harder to repair when it’s been lost. A person’s integrity is a lot like a glass vase. When it is broken, it takes a lot of effort to be put back together. Even once it is back together, the cracks from where it was broken are still visible. Eventually with a lot of polishing and work, the vase can look almost new, but the cracks are still underneath. Integrity can only be broken and fixed by the person who’s it is. It can only be fixed by saying the truth, doing the right thing, and treating others how they want to be treated.

On the positive side, a unit that has respect and integrity in, for, and amongst the leaders and soldiers, can complete tasks given to them quickly, efficiently, with little oversight. Higher up leaders can trust that when they give an overarching objective, the lower leaders can task out the necessary steps to make sure it can be accomplished. There is little left to the imagination as to what needs to be completed because leaders respect their soldiers enough to make the process known to all as to what is going on. Problems are brought up and solved quickly before they become larger problems, tasks are completed in an efficient and timely manner, and the objective is completed as expected by the upper echelons of leadership. Soldiers trust that when they bring up an issue, whether personal, professional, or otherwise, that their leaders will help them solve it or point them in the direction of a solution. Leaders trust that their soldiers will come to them with problems, ideas, and potentially dangerous conditions. Soldiers trust their leaders to listen when concerns are brought up. Soldiers are more capable, useful, and imaginative when their leadership gives them the chance to try something. General (Retired) George S Patton once said, ‘Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity’. When a damper indicator is frozen and you need to pull it out to service it, sure you could pull it in the hangar wait for it to warm up, and fix it. Maybe the soldier has an idea for using some 550 cord to make a pulley system to pull it out so the damper can be fixed and go fly. The only thing stopping a potentially good solution from being very effective is micromanagement and the belief that the more experienced leaders hold the best solutions one hundred percent of the time. The most successful armies in history were not micromanaged. They were told what needed done, and they got it done. This kind of unit is well-disciplined. To do what needs to be done, and to do what can be done later, now. Acting now on limited information is better than acting in a week on all of the information. The soldiers have self-discipline to complete the task and find another task. The leaders have the self-discipline to let the soldiers do what needs to be done.

So to reiterate, respect and integrity, the third and sixth army core values respectively, are two of the most important core army values to live. Without them, a unit can enter a spiral of collapse. With respect and integrity though, a unit becomes one of the strongest, fastest, most well prepared unit around. Able to complete anything given to them through the trust given to everyone within the unit. Trust between leaders and soldiers, is one of the most basic relationships in the army. When that relationship fails, it can ruin the entire unit. Too many bosses have been toxic to the work environment that most people I have encountered do not want to stay in. They want to finish their contract and get out. Every single one cites the leadership as the reason they want to get out. People do not quit because the job is hard. They quit because their boss makes the job infinitely more difficult to complete. Working together to complete the mission under a competent leader can be the difference between someone who views it as a job or as a lifestyle. When it thrives, people come to work excited to do their job, to better themselves, to learn, and to be a part of the team we have created. In universities, students learn how to express original ideas and cite the correct sources for every corresponding piece of information. They also learn to work independently and report the results accurately and honestly. These skills are helpful even beyond their academic career as they help to build their personality and moral character. The dishonest practices in academic assignments not only would affect the valuable learning experiences of the students but could also lead to failure in the assignment and or expulsion from the university (Razek 2014). Thus, I learned that academic integrity involves the creation and expression of original ideas in the academic assignments, acknowledgment of the information sources, completion of the assignments independently and acknowledgment of any collaboration to pay respect to the other authors, honest representation of one’s own work. Hence, universities have guidelines regarding academic integrity and the students must follow those. Under the guidelines, proper citation of other authors’ work is the main criterion for academic integrity (Reeves 2015).

In the professional world, companies have their guidelines on ethical practices and the employees must abide by the rules. The guidelines and policies usually address points like bribes, biases, favoritism among employees, internal politics for harming employees, not keeping promises, and cheating (Gundersen and Townsend 2014). The guidelines strictly prohibit the practices of the above-mentioned issues in the workplace to maintain a fair work environment, which would keep the employees motivated. Violation of these rules would lead to strict penalties, such as suspension or even termination from the job.

Comparison between present and past knowledge on academic and professional integrity

Previously, I had a vague idea about academic and professional integrity. I knew that integrity means the adoption of fair and ethical practices in academic and professional lives. It reflects the culture of the individual demonstrating the moral values and principles. However, now I know how important it is to practice integrity in both fields. Possessing all these values makes me a better individual and a great contribution to society. Honestly, I practice these values in my daily life. As a student, I do all my assignments with all my effort without copying others’ work even if I am not good at it. I exerted effort and spent too much time, accomplishing my task. I am clear with all my priorities like I do first all my homework and responsibilities than being enticed in social media. The Crisis of Integrity in America

“Cheating is as American as a rotten apple pie. According to the Josephson Institute of Ethics biennial studies of the behavior of American youth, two-thirds of students admit cheating on at least one test in the past year. Yet nearly everyone, 93 percent, claims to be satisfied with their personal ethics and character. In another study last year, the institute found that half of teenagers 17 and under believe lying and cheating are necessary to succeed. High school students who cheated at least twice on exams are three times more likely as adults to lie to customers in business transactions”. (Jackson, 2010) America clearly has a crisis with integrity.

Integrity can be defined in many ways; but it comes down to being honest with yourself and others, no matter the consequences. Integrity is important to me because it shows who a person is at the core. Integrity is important in the criminal justice system because it is the crux of the judicial system. My mom began talking to me about “integrity” from the time I was a young boy.

Personal and Biblical Perspectives on Integrity

The definition of integrity that I have known, grown-up with, and believe to be true, is that integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking. It means being honest, sincere, authentic and having good character, no matter the cost. Completing a job the right way, when no one is watching, is integrity. Keeping your word and following through with promises, when no one will check-up, is integrity. Being able to admit wrongdoings, accept criticism and make improvements without pride, is integrity. Whether a human being sees what you have or have not done, God is always watching and knows whether you are acting with integrity.

The Bible talks about “integrity” from the beginning. “Integrity” in Hebrew is used thirty times in the Bible (Orr, 1515). The translation of “integrity” into Hebrew is “tom” or “tummah”. The meaning of these translations is “simplicity”, “soundness”, “completeness”, “perfection” or “upright”. The Hebrew word for “integrity” is used several times throughout the Old Testament of the Bible (Orr, 1515). In Job 1:8, God is confirming the godliness and integrity of his faithful servant, Job: “And the

Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason’”. In Proverbs 11:3, we are reminded that those who display integrity will be guided on a straight path, but he who cannot distinguish right from wrong will be destroyed: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity”. In Proverbs 10:9, we are reminded that he who walks with nothing concealed will have nothing to fear, but he who walks in sin will be found out: “The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out”.

The Biblical definition of integrity is comparable to that of Webster’s Dictionary. Webster’s Dictionary has three different, yet similar, definitions for integrity: 1) firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: INCORRUPTIBILITY, 2) an unimpaired condition: SOUNDNESS, and 3) the quality or state of being undivided: COMPLETELENSS (Merriam-Webster, 2016).

Legal Definitions and the Importance of Integrity

The legal definition of “integrity” is less similar, but still exemplifies the same idea. According to The Law Dictionary, it is the “soundness of moral principle and character, as shown by one person dealing with others in the making and performance of contracts, and fidelity and honesty in the discharge of trusts” it is synonymous with “probity,” “honesty,” and “uprightness” (Garner, 2014).

Regardless of which definition I choose to embrace, integrity is something that I take very seriously and that is extremely important to me. Integrity is important to me because it is the way people show who they really are. There is congruity between how a person behaves (who they appear to be on the outside) and who they are on the inside. If one behaves in an honest, genuine and righteous manner, odds are, he is a man of integrity. It is very difficult to “fake” integrity. The person who seeks to be a man of integrity will naturally lean toward such behaviors and he who does not, will not likely care about such characteristics and will have difficulty exhibiting same.

Integrity in the Criminal Justice System: A Fundamental Necessity

Integrity is an important characteristic for those who work in the criminal justice system. It is the backbone of the judicial system. Without honesty, “integrity and accountability in the criminal justice system there will never be true reform” (Saady, 2018). By the end of 2018, over 2,000 people had been exonerated from criminal convictions since 1989. The majority of these people were put behind bars because of unlawful behavior of witnesses, law enforcement, the government or the courts (Saady). Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for law enforcement and court officials to behave in an illegal fashion to make sure a potentially innocent person ends up in jail. Even if they are caught, the justice system tends to be lenient with corrupt police officers. Most of the corrupt officers or corrupt officials, who are sentenced, are sentenced to less time than those who are falsely convicted. According to the Mullen Commission in 1994, “Perjury is perhaps the most widespread form of police wrongdoing facing today’s criminal justice system” (Saady, 2018). However, nearly twenty-five years later, we are seeing something that goes beyond the level of perjury. We are seeing police planting and tainting evidence, prosecutors “buying” informants in the prisons and judges selling kids down the system for monetary kickbacks.

Case Studies of Integrity Failures Within the Justice System

In February, 2018, two Baltimore Gun Trace Task Force law enforcement officers were convicted of robbery, racketeering and conspiracy. They reportedly stole cash, resold confiscated narcotics, put GPS trackers on the cars of their robbery targets and lied under oath. The two admitted to crimes of the like stretching over a ten year period. They testified that their supervisor told them to carry BB guns in case they needed to plant weapons. They conspired with a corrupt bondsman and occasionally posed as federal agents when performing arrests. The immoral and unethical behavior of the eight officers involved called into question nearly 125 cases; all of the cases were dropped. Debbie Katz Levi, head of special litigation for Baltimore’s Office of the Public Defender said, “Beyond the sheer credibility issues that should have been raised at the time, given how embedded their crimes were in their police work, all cases involving these officers are tainted” (Staff, 2018). The acting Police Commissioner, Darryl DeSousa created the Corruption Investigation Unit after this major bust of internal corruption. DeSousa said, “We recognize that this indictment and subsequent trial uncovered some of the most egregious and despicable acts ever perpetrated in law enforcement” (Staff, 2018). David Harris is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law who researches police behavior. He said, “[He’d] be willing to bet that lots of people – not just one or two – but a number of people knew that there was something stinking and rotten about this unit. And they just chose to look the other way” (Staff, 2018).

The Role of Leadership and Integrity in Governance

Looking the other way is not what FBI Director James Comey did with his handling of the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. Clinton’s use of the private email server for government emails was, at best, lacking integrity. The Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton blamed Comey for her loss of the 2016 election. James Comey has a book coming out, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership”. In the book, he recalls meeting with Obama in the Oval Office in November 2016. Obama says to him, ‘“I picked you to be FBI director because of your integrity and your ability”’… ‘“I want you to know that nothing has happened in the last year to change my view”’ (Choi, 2018).

Positively or negatively, the views and agendas of governing authorities severely impact the lives of citizens. When judges lack integrity, the criminal justice system greatly suffers. Louis Brandeis said, “Our government…teaches the whole people by its example. If the government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy.” In February, 2018, a Texas state district court judge was arrested for allegedly accepting $6,000 in cash bribes. Rodolfo “Rudy” Delgado is accused of accepting bribes from an attorney in exchange for favorable judicial decisions. The cases he interfered with involved federal funding, so the charges are even more serious. He allegedly accepted three separate bribes in exchange for releasing three different clients on bond with pending cases. Delgado has had two continuances and was recently denied a second attempt to change the venue of his trial. The new trial date has not yet been set.

While it is unusual for officials to break the law to keep people out of jail, it is more common for scandalous acts to occur while putting people in jail, prison or detention. That is what happened in a Pennsylvania, Luzerne County juvenile courtroom. ‘“The judge’s whim is all that mattered in that courtroom”’,according to Marsha Levick, the legal director of the Juvenile Law Center in Philadelphia. ‘“The law was basically irrelevant”’ (Urbina, 2009). Judge Mark A. Ciavarella Jr. and Judge Michael T. Conahan are known for the “Kids for Cash” scandal. It was the biggest legal scandal in state history. They were involved in a scheme which sent thousands of juveniles to two private detention centers in exchange for $2.6 million in kickbacks, with which they bought homes, cars and yachts for themselves. While the two judges were living it up in their second homes in Florida, the more than 2,500 juveniles who went before them were not so fortunate. Luzerne County became infamous for imposing heavy sentences for minor infractions and first time offenders. Ciavarella also had a habit of not telling juveniles about their right to have an attorney. The number of juveniles he sent to placement more than doubled between 2001 and 2002; this was around the time Ciavarella and Conahan developed their kickback plan. This trend continued through 2007 and was more than double the Pennsylvania state average (Urbina, 2009). State auditors began to notice the monthly billing for detention centers was the same month after month for the county. The amount typically fluctuates as the number of placements fluctuates. The judges also started to struggle to hide the large amounts of money they were getting from the facilities, and they were eventually found out. Between the two, they were charged with racketeering, fraud, money laundering, extortion, bribery and federal tax violations. Ciavarella was sentenced to 28 years in federal prison and Conahan was sentenced to 17.5. The Supreme Court ordered the records of hundreds of juveniles sentenced by Ciavarella be cleaned.

Money is often a motivator for corruption and judicial misconduct. “…America’s courts are failing to check themselves…Judicial legitimacy derives directly from judicial restraining and integrity. And when the courts fail to police themselves, the cries of judges lamenting the intervention of other branches rings hollow” (Sample, 2018). John Grisham’s 2008 best seller, “The Appeal”, was a dark tale of justice for sale. It was based on the true story of judicial dishonesty in West Virginia. It tells about a political underworld and undisclosed funds where litigants spend millions choosing the judges who would decide their cases. In 2018, West Virginia’s House of Delegates did something which had never been done; they voted to impeach all four Supreme Court Justices for inappropriate and lavish spending of taxpayer money. One of the judges spent $500,278.23 in taxpayer money renovating her office. The same judge sold a $1.3 million jet, through her husband, to an attorney trying a multimillion case before her. The deal was never disclosed and she did not recuse herself from the case. In a different scenario, West Virginia Chief-Justice was found by the US Supreme Court to have unconstitutionally deprived a litigant of due process. The judge overturned a $50 million guilty verdict against a coal industry executive. He was seen with the coal executive in the Riviera while he was presiding over the case. James Sample, a professor of law at Maurice A Deane School of Law at Hofstra University reminds us that, “…courts and judges, be they elected or appointed, do not always adhere to the highest standards of ethics and integrity” (Sample, 2018).

Conclusion: Upholding Integrity for a Just Society

There are several ways to define integrity, but they all come down to good character, being upright and moral. “Although the legal and ethical definitions of right are the antithesis of each other, most writers use them as synonyms. They confuse power with goodness, and mistake law for justice.” (Spreading, 1923, p. 158).Integrity is important to me because it shows who I am at my core. I read a quote by columnist Bill Vaughan that strangely, I agree with: “A real patriot is the fellow who gets a parking ticket and rejoices that the system works.” Integrity is important in the criminal justice system so that the system works as it was designed. “…without sustained attention to systemic and preemptive tenets of judicial ethics, books like “The Appeal” will reside on the non-fiction shelf. Such circumstances would be a loss not for the left; not for the right; but for all who believe in the ideals of America” (Sample, 2018).

John Proctor and His True Integrity

Once everyone has tried to hide up lies in order to not reveal the truth, knowing it would ruin him/her at some point but soon the truth comes out bringing big conflicts. In ‘The Crucible’ John Proctor’s lie, unfortunately, came out affecting him for life. One theme in ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller is an honesty to oneself, lies and making tough choices. In the play ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller there are a series of events that truly test the belief of a puritan. It will truly show those who are faithful. Throughout the play, we meet those who truly have integrity revealing their honesty and strong morals. John Proctor is one character that truly shows integrity. There’s a big conflict of lies upon lies, all accusing each other and what is being done that will ruin lives. Despite proctor’s affair with Abigail. John Proctor has the most integrity because he chose to ruin his reputation by confessing the truth, he chose to be honest to himself and do what’s right.

One reason John Proctor has the most integrity is although he had an affair with Abigail instead of continuing, he decided to break the affair with her. He made a mistake and fixed it by cutting her off of his life. His choice of ending their affair caused Abigail to begin accusing many just to try to get rid of Proctors’ wife and have him all to herself. John Proctor was willing to ruin his reputation just to save Elizabeth, “I have rung the doom of my good name” (p. 89). He did indeed confessed, there is no man who would confess knowing his reputation would be ruined but proctor is so concerned about his wife so he wants to do anything possible to save her. He chose to be honest and once again faithful to his wife. John Proctor learned from his mistakes changing for the better.

Adding on, John Proctor was not only honest to himself but as well to the people of Salem. John Proctor shows integrity because he only chooses to criticize himself and not betray the people from Salem. “I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another” (p. 113). John Proctor was given the chance to confess although it would have to be a lie in order to not be hanged. He chose not to confess because he knew the people from Salem that were put to be hanged would be viewed as liars. John Proctor chose to be an honest man to himself and for the others. He has shown integrity by choosing to die as an honest man.

John Proctor is no perfect man. Despite the fact that he had committed adultery with Abigail it questions his integrity, but he made many choices that changed up his character for the better, then becoming a man with integrity. John Proctor did have an affair, it was definitely wrong, but he most importantly ended the affair. In Act 1 John Proctor confronts Abigail making it clear he doesn’t want anything to do with her, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby” (p. 18). We are so imperfect, no one is perfect in this world. John Proctor made a mistake and made the choice, to be honest, no man would easily decide to confess the truth giving a result of ruining his reputation. John Proctor admits the time he spent with Abigail but made it clear it would never happen again. He fixed his mistake, although that won’t change the fact that he had an affair with Abigail but it would change his character, John Proctor is becoming a better man making the choices that are right. John Proctors’ death at the end of the play has taught us not only the importance of integrity but as well as the consequences that occur when not having much integrity. John Proctor died as a nobleman making him have integrity. John Proctors’ wife also believes he has integrity stating, Proctor is in conflict with himself throughout the whole play. He does not want anyone to know of his affair with Abigail. He wants to conserve his integrity he has which leads to various events in the trials that transform him into becoming an honorable man at the end. John Proctor keeps his integrity by not lying to himself or the people from Salem. Soon coming to conclusion, he finds forgiveness with himself.
