The goal of this assignment is to respond to a piece similar to something we have encountered so far in class through a close reading of that piece. IT MUST BE A DIFFERENT PIECE THAN ONE FROM CLASS AND DIFFERENT FROM THE PRACTICE PAPER. Each student must write one essay; please do not use Chat GPT or similar tools, the goal here is to help you think and express yourself logically and clearly. I will not (and, indeed, cannot) check to see if you are using these tools, but we are on the honor system here.
The paper should be written for an academic audience, with proper citations and style, and turned in through Canvas. Papers should be NO LONGER THAN 5 PAGES (no minimum length). Each paper should include the following:
Part I
A description of the historical CONTEXT of the piece chosen (when and by whom it was made, what was going in the place and time, etc.
A brief analysis of the work according to its TEXT (according to genre: paintings should be analyzed in terms of style and theme, brushstrokes, etc.; architecture in terms of building style, layout, etc.; music in terms of lyrics and sound).
A brief analysis of its SUBTEXT (so you must state what you think the goal or meaning of the piece, what its meaning might be, what this piece might tell us about the culture that created it, and etc., making sure to cite various aspects of the piece (a particular part of the painting or some piece of the story, etc) which supports your interpretation. THIS SHOULD COMBINE YOUR ANALYSIS OF THE TEXT AND CONTEXT.
Your own personal response to the work. This first part of the response should take a stand with regard to the work. Do you like it? Is it effective? Why or why not?
Part II
The second part of the response should compare the work to another. This other work can be from any period or place other than the previously chosen piece. Briefly (in a page or so) examine your chosen artwork according to the previous 4 steps (Part I). Then, draw a comparison between the two works. The comparison should demonstrate how a similar theme, style, or argument occurred in a different time and place, and how that makes it different from the previously chosen piece.

Assignment Overview
The HUM2020 Cultural Awareness Essay is designed to evaluate your understanding of Florida Gateway College’s Cultural Awareness General Learning Outcome: Students will explain how aspects of culture relate to the human experience.
As we have discussed throughout this course:
All art disciplines express the human experience, with each doing so in its own unique way. Of the art disciplines that we have studied in this course, painting, literature, and music are the most fundamental.
The arts are unique among the humanities in their ability to reveal values, which are an important aspect of the human experience. In this course, we have considered how numerous works of art reveal values.
There are three primary types of art criticism: descriptive, interpretive, and evaluative. Our emphasis in this course has been on the proper use of these types of criticism through an examination of artistic form.
Prompt
Use descriptive criticism and interpretive criticism to analyze three provided works of art—a painting, a poem, and a piece of music—in order to determine using evaluative criticism which work you believe best expresses values
Instructions
After choosing ONE painting, ONE poem, and ONE piece of music from the works provided above, write a 1250- to 1500-word essay, structured in five distinct paragraphs, as follows:
PARAGRAPH ONE—DESCRIPTIVE CRITICISM [250-300 words]: State the purpose of your essay (just one sentence) and describe your three chosen works of art (one painting, one poem, and one piece). Your description of each work must include its identifying information (artist, title, and year) and a succinct discussion of its subject matter and form. PARAGRAPH TWO—INTERPRETIVE CRITICISM [250-300 words]: Explain how your chosen painting expresses one or more specific values based on its content. Your interpretation must consider how the work’s subject matter is transformed into content through its form, with a detailed analysis focused on at least two relevant aspects of form. Remember that interpretive criticism should not include any evaluation. What is this painting’s possible content?
How is this painting’s content revealed through its form?

Remember that interpretive criticism should not include any evaluation. What is this poem’s possible content?
How is this poem’s content revealed through its form?

Sarah Rosenthal concludes her essay as follows:
The Biden Administration should end this practice of concealment by providing the public with a truthful assessment of the President’s health status given the staggering consequences of this election and the potential peril facing the country.
The election has certainly changed since this piece was written, yet do you believe that the public deserves truthful assessments of their leader’s health? Where is the line between privacy and our leader’s responsibility to the nation?

Overview
In this exercise, you will choose a wellness-related topic or event and examine it using the four interdisciplinary general education lenses. You may see how the interconnectedness of wellness impacts society by looking at the problem/event through various lenses. The scientific and practical sciences, social science, history, and humanities comprise general education’s four interdisciplinary lenses.
The study of history focuses on the past and how it relates to the present. It includes memories, content, and temporally positioned occurrences.
The study of humanities examines metaphor, experience, and meaning in the context of cultural creative expression.
The social sciences use statistics and demographic data to analyze social structures and human relationships, while the natural and applied sciences use the scientific method to study the material world.
We frequently hop between many frames to make sense of an event. When we go to a musical performance, for example, we could switch from an artistic perspective (how was the musical score created?) to a technical one (how is the lighting done?) to a financial one (how much do the actors make?). Similarly, using the interdisciplinary general education lenses can extend our viewpoint by allowing us to study things consciously and see things from other angles.
Guidelines
You will write a brief paper for this assignment on any topic related to wellness that you choose below.
Mental Health care
Mental Health in the workplace
Workplace stressors during and after the pandemic
Once you have decided on a topic, conduct preliminary research to ensure you can cover the project’s requirements. You must apply each lens to your issue in your paper by utilizing its terminology and viewpoints. You can use the items below the rubric criteria to help you better understand the requirements and direct your writing, but you do not have to answer some of them.
You must pay particular attention to rubric criteria:Every paragraph needs a bold lens header.
1. Summarize what you already know about the wellness topic you are studying.
A. You may talk about your experiences with the subject, what you studied in school, or your presumptions about it. What am I aware of or believe I am aware of?
2. View your subject through the prism of history.

Complete this activity after you have explored the Museum Kampa, in Prague, site through the Google Art Project.
Describe the work, including the following information:When was the work created?
What medium is the work in (e.g., sculpture, painting)?
What material was used (e.g., clay, bronze, oil, acrylic)?
How large is the work? As a whole? The individual pieces?
Is the work realistic? Abstract?
After describing what is there, consider what is NOT there. Describe how the artist may be using empty space as part of the composition.
Relate Figures to two other sculptures of human figures you have learned from different historic periods. In comparing and contrasting the three, consider the following:The materials used (e.g., wood, stone, clay).
Formal composition (e.g., symmetry, repetition, line).
Style (e.g., abstract, idealized, realistic).
Knowing what you do about art in the postmodern era, how does Abakanowicz evoke the history of art of the human figure? How does the reference to older works of art relate to developments in art in the post–World War II era?
Recall your initial reaction to the Abakanowicz work. What were your first impressions?
Does the work fit into your notion of what society was like at the time it was created?
How have your impressions changed after you looked at and considered the work closely?
Does consideration of the work within a broader context of the history of art change your initial impressions? Explain.
