Selection of Literature on Homeschooling

Blumenfeld, S. L. Why Homeschooling is good for America. Vital Speeches of the Day. pp. 763-766.

Samuel L. Blumenfeld has spent the last 30 years writing about American education. In 1986 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by Bob Jones University. The article describes that homeschooling allows such principles of education as perfection, preservation of her reputation and moral stability. This highly attentive attitude parenst show towards child demonstrate that they place perfection before education and before certain moral, spiritual issues. Thus, the author sustains all parents should always keep track of their kids mental status and should detect the moments when they feel bad, the equilibrium between silence and a sincere task, the balance between paying enough attention to the child and neglecting some minor faults acquires essential meaning at times. Blumenfeld believes it is necessary to let the child understand that parents care about him or her, but at the same time not to impose their will and let him or her develop and grow their own way. This is probably the key to success in a family. This source will help to construct the paper and cite theoretical material on the topic.

Colfax, D., Colfax, M. (1988). Homeschooling for Excellence. Grand Central Publishing; 1st edition.

For over fifteen years, David and Micki Colfax have been educating their children at home, their efforts made possible to have three of their sons enrolled in Harvard University. The book describes that homeschooling is multidimensional notion. In practice it means that there are different ways of understanding education. That is the main reason of the numerous approaches that are used while defining the notion of education. Also, the term is rather general what implies on the possible differences in understanding this notion. Homeschooling education is a chance for personal development that is based of skillful cultivation of human talents. This idea is one of the few authors who connect education with the personal characteristics of a person. The main achievement is the explanation of the very essence of the term homeschooling. Education is connected to the idea of human freedom. Homeschooling mean the freedom of expression. The current culture is fighting for the fulfilment of the educational standards. These usually deal with the concrete embodiment of abstract values including such important ones as freedom and growth. This source will help to explain the main advantages and benefits of homeschooling and give examples referred to modern society.

Cooper, B. C., Sureau, J. (2007). The Politics of Homeschooling-New Developments, New Challenges. Educational Policy 21 (1). 110-131.

Bruce Cooper is a professor at Fordham University. He has numerous publications on education and public administration at schools. John Sureau is n assistant professor at Fordham University. The authors suppose that homeschooling will help many families to educate their children and reduce the level of dropouts. The case study states that the future at least the foreseeable one, shows clearly that violence and the tools of violence are not going to go away. One does not have to look, once again, beyond the daily news to see that: nuclear weapons are being made more and more powerful and are being acquired by more nations; personal weapons are as common as automobiles and as easily bought or stolen. The research article will be used as an illustrative material for further research.

Foley, E. L. (2008). Homeschooling: A Familys Journey. Library Journey, 133 (13), 95.

Erica L. Foley is columnist writer for Library Journey. The article evaluates recent changes in homeschooling and its potential for different social classes. The author underlines that society and all the other environmental pressures are not the only factors that must be considered, especially in cases like murder, or in any of the other so-called senseless slayings that parents hear and read so much about. For this reason, homeschooling is safe and more effective children. The school environment, remember, is but the match that ignites the powder in the firecracker. Homeschooling may be just the right mix of ingredients, from brain chemicals to chromosomes to individual peculiarities like low self-esteem and poor sense of identity, even envy, all of which can set some people off. This source will help explain significance and role of family in life of a student.

Isenberg, E. (2007). What Have We Learned About Homeschooling? PJE. 82 (2/3), 387-409.

The author is PH. D. in education who spent many years working as a University professor. The research study discusses the importance of Homeschooling and its benefits. The author claims that there is nearly unanimous agreement that many youths are behaving violently because they are rebelling against tradition, and against a competitive school system that is conducted, The rules are, indeed, strict: stiff, black, military-cut uniforms for the boys; long black skirts for the girls; no smoking, no true expression of views, no wandering from the lesson plan of the teacher. There is often physical and mental abuse of the students: in one incident, a thirty-year-old junior high school teacher was accused of punching eighteen of his first-year pupils and pouring water over their heads because they failed to report a smoking incident. Homeschooling would help parents to protect their children and transfer their own values and beliefs to their children. This research will help to illustrate the topic and support its with statistical data and examples.

Levy, T. (2009). Homeschooling and Racism. Journal of Black Studies, 39 (6), 905-923.

Tal Levy is a political science professor at Marygrove College in Detroit. The author admits that the school violence that erupted on our nations campuses during the sixties had little to do with bad homes. College students, for the most part, do not return at night to ghetto homes, nor are they usually abused and unloved by their parents. The things that caused the student riots were issues in which the participants believed strongly. Homeschooling would help to escape racial discrimination and segregation by people of color. Families often set high goals, and that when some young people are unable or unwilling to meet those goals they become angry and aggressive. Society, too, can also set high goals that sometimes cause certain people to turn violent. When the students aims were thwarted -whether these were to assure equal rights for minorities their frustrations exploded into violence. This will be used as a case study to illustrate safety concerns and importance of children protection.

Lips , D, Feinberg, E. (2009). HOMESCHOOLING: The Sleeping Giant of American Education., USA Today Magazine, 22-24, (2772).

Dan Lips is an education analyst and Evan Feinberg is a former research assistant in the Domestic Policy Studies Department at The Heritage Foundation, Washington D.C. The article defines the opportunity of homeschooling and its strengths. Still, the authors concentrate on how statistics show the growing number of parents enrolling in home education. The authors highlight how the accelerated increase of homeschooling families has led to the proliferation of sources and networks that facilitate the process not available 25 years ago.The researchers describe advantages of value system and importance of cultural traditions transmitted from mother to child, historically, the method of teaching and how the rise of compulsory education laws eroded its prevalence.. This article offers outstanding insight about how homeschooling is becoming a good alternative for education to many families in America. This source will be used as an illustration of benefits and advantages f homeschooling and its practices application in modern education system.

McRevnolds K. (2007). Homeschooling. Encounter. 20 (2), 36-41.

The author of the article is a staff members of Center for Social and Emotional Education. She has Ph.D and is a member of CSEEs consultation staff and visiting faculty. The article describes the issue of homeschooling from parental respective. The author suggests that many parents feel that this is an unacceptable situation. Moreover, competition among junior high school students seeking to gain admittance to prestigious high schools is fierce, and there is even fiercer competition for entrance to elite universities. Homeschooling would help school administration to reduce burden on school system and improve knowledge level. A good example of that occurs when a very successful student, a person who has made the most of what society offered or asked of him, finishes school earlier than his peers. This source will help to describe advantages and benefits of homeschooling for parents and children.

Romanowski, M. H. (2006). Revisiting the Common Myths about Homeschooling. Clearing House 79 (3), 125-129.

The author is PhD, a professor of education in the College of Education. In this article, Romanowski discusses benefits and prejudices against home education and prospects for parents. The author states that different grade levels (elementary, middle school, and high school) require different learning goals. Each supervisor works with the principal to secure delivery of the special services. Also note that a supervisor may have more than one job; serving, for example, as an assistant principal of a building.. Eventually, the assistant superintendent for elementary education can take on the extra responsibility of administering the homeschooling programs for the district. Similar changes can occur in any district. It is important for parents to know who is in charge, both on paper and in reality. This article will help to support the issues of homeschooling and reject counterarguments.

Tough stance on student expulsion. (2009). American School Board Journal, 196 (8), 10.

Founded in 1891, editorially independent education magazine is published monthly by the National School Boards Association. In this publication, the article makes emphasis that in spite of some benefits and advantages of homeschooling researchers admit negative influences of such education including lack of communication and socialization. Still, the researchers agree that at home, the mother is charged with her childrens education, and child receives the most favorable educational opportunities, and later more high-level professional opportunities in the right direction. As well-meaning as she may be, the mother, according to some psychologists, creates faith because she not only drives her child toward achievement, but also often allows herself to be supported by him in return for studying. This source will show that high achievements are a usual case among students who study at home because of persona and psychological conform.

Homeschooling is a Viable Alternative to Public School

Introduction

  • Opening statement: Once seen as the exclusive province of deeply religious families, homeschooling has changed drastically in recent decades.
  • General information: In public discourse, homeschooling can be seen as inferior to mainstream education and criticized as unregulated and ineffective from the standpoint of socialization.
  • Context/rationale: Failing to reflect homeschooled childrens positive experiences and data from research, this viewpoint can be harmful and limit families decision-making power, so reviewing the benefits of home-based education is essential.
  • Thesis statement: Homeschooling can promote academic excellence, offer more flexibility to students with unique need profiles, and remove factors that distract students from learning, thus being a good alternative to traditional education.

Homeschooling and Its Positive Influences on Performance and Skills

  • Topic sentence: Home-based education has been shown to be related to above-average skills and performance.
  • Point 1: The scores of homeschooled children aged from 6 to 12 on the Test of Problem-Solving (TOPS) exceed standard expectations based on the general population (Medlin and Butler 62).
  • Point 2: In young adults, those who have been homeschooled tend to have greater satisfaction with their autonomy compared to former public school students (Medlin and Butler 68).
  • Point 3: Based on large-scale comparative research in Canada and the U.S., homeschooled students score at the 65th to 80th percentile on standardized achievement tests, whereas public school students score at the 50th percentile (Bosswell 27).
  • Concluding sentence/implications: Based on these outcomes, homeschooling can promote better academic achievement, overall autonomy, and problem-solving skills.

Homeschooling as a Source of Flexible and Needs-Based Education

  • Topic sentence: Being flexible, home-based education enables special needs children and those requiring attendance-related accommodations to learn at their own pace and receive professional support if necessary.
  • Point 1: In the U.S., modern technology and homeschool assistance programs provide families with vast opportunities for homeschooling customization, including access to online courses taught by professional teachers. For instance, the Olympic Regional Learning Academy offers online grade-specific courses for homeschooled students (Hirsh 4).
  • Point 2: As opposed to inclusive public school education, homeschooling enables special needs students, including autistic children, to learn at a comfortable pace and prepare for post-secondary education more effectively (Peters 10). Home-based education, therefore, eliminates excessive pressure to keep up with faster-learning peers.
  • Point 3: Homeschooling offers the necessary flexibility and fluidity to military families and children that change places of residence frequently (Kile 41). Without educational opportunities aligned with certain families nomadic lifestyles, the stress of going to new schools could be a tremendous barrier to childrens holistic well-being.
  • Concluding sentence/implications: The flexibility of homeschooling offers the necessary accommodations to various student categories, making this form of education a good option for families.

Homeschooling Can Reduce Harmful Distractions from Learning

  • Topic sentence: Another reason why homeschooling is a viable alternative to public education refers to the absence of peer-induced distractions that could affect learning.
  • Point 1: Mainstream public schools are known to have a higher incidence of bullying compared to Steiner/Montessori schools, whereas homeschooling takes the childs psychological safety even further (Peters 1). This implies that being homeschooled is a viable choice for children at risk of being bullied.
  • Point 2: In neurodivergent children, going to a public school creates social anxiety that hinders academic progress, and homeschooling removes this barrier to successful knowledge acquisition (Peters 9). Social anxiety gives rise to excessive concerns and addressing it can enable the homeschooled child to devote all energy to studying.
  • Point 3: Based on preliminary research, homeschooling can provide non-conforming youth, including LGBTQ populations, with an opportunity to learn without being distracted by peer pressure or social rejection (Hirsh 4). This form of education can, therefore, create safer educational environments for those at risk of experiencing misunderstanding and violence.
  • Concluding sentence/implications: Thus, home-based instruction enables students to focus on the content rather than relationships, making it a suitable substitute for public education in certain cases.

Arguments against Homeschooling and Response to Them

  • Topic sentence: Those opposing homeschooling may argue that it does not promote socialization, which has implications for personal progress.
  • Explanation of the opposing sides position: The critics of home-based education suppose that it deprives children of exposure to situations that stimulate healthy socialization. It results in the absence of skills required for academic and personal success later in life. According to this viewpoint, only traditional learning environments support proficient thinking skills by exposing children to social contacts (Medlin and Butler 63).
  • Refutation: Firstly, the perception that home-based schooling means the absence of interaction with anyone apart from parents is flawed as homeschooled children can learn with siblings or actively communicate with peers after classes. Secondly, the suggestion that homeschooled individuals thinking skills are underdeveloped does not find reflection in current research. Quite the opposite, homeschooled students have been shown to outperform their peers from public schools in problem-solving (Boswell 27; Medlin and Butler 62).
  • Concluding sentence: Therefore, the position that home-based education does not promote skill sets required for success is not based on solid evidence.

Conclusion

  • Restatement of the papers thesis: Finally, the effects of homeschooling on performance, meeting individual needs, and concentration explain why it should be seen as a suitable alternative to public school education.
  • Summary of main points: Homeschooled children demonstrate optimal performance when it comes to solving problems and knowledge tests, and home-based educations flexible nature benefits special needs populations and military families. This form of learning can also eliminate the negative influences of peer groups and the resulting impacts on academic performance.
  • Concluding remarks: With these points in mind, spreading families awareness of homeschooling and its advantages is essential.

Homeschooling Safer Than Public School

Homeschooling is the process of educating children at home rather than inside a public school classroom. Homeschooled children are taught by their parents the same subjects that are taught in the standard public school environment. There are pros and cons to homeschooling, and it is important to remember that homeschooling is not for everyone and takes a lot of commitment. There are several motivating factors behind parents choosing to homeschool their children and the pros seem to outweigh the cons in many instances. When a child is homeschooled the parent can concentrate on the child’s interest one-one and can tailor education for the child’s learning level and style. Parents who home school often believe they are bettering their child since homeschoolers have better test scores, more flexibility, and the opportunity to participate in many diverse knowledge enriched activities.

Homeschooling is becoming more and more popular. Many used to view homeschooling as an isolating activity that took social skills away from a child but now many parents choose to homeschool to separate their children from bad influences and allow them to participate in fun activities of learning. Homeschooled kids in New York have the opportunity to learn American history from Broadway musicals through The New-York Historical Society, they can earn PE credits from Wayfinders which is a role-playing game where they cant run away from central park playing an epic and educational game of capture the flag. At Robofun homeschoolers can learn about robotics and can even build their own, many parents who choose to homeschool love how their child can learn knowledge through hands-on activities while also having fun.

One of the biggest reasons parents are choosing to homeschool is because Homeschoolers achieve higher test scores than students of public schools. Martin-Chang from the Home School Legal Defense Association states “That the homeschooled children were functioning at a higher level than traditionally schooled children in every grade and overall the curricular areas tested, which is reading, language arts, math, social studies, science, and information services” (Martin-Chang et al). Students who are homeschooled are more successful because they are receiving one on one instruction that can be tailored to their education needs. Israel Wayne Author of “Benefits of Homeschooling” states, “Home-educated students have repeatedly won the National Geographic Bee, the Scripps National Spelling Bee, The Inte. International Science &Engineering Fair, the GSN National Vocabulary Championship, the Nation Mock Trial Championship, National Nerite Scholarship awards, and many other honors, as well as soring top placement at leading universities” (Israel Wayne). On average, homeschool students score 2 points higher on the ACT than students that are in traditional public schools and homeschool students have better test scores in standardizing testing above the public school student, the research shows that homeschool students have excelled above public-school students in many academic competitions which earned them many awards and honors and have encouraged many parents to take on homeschooling.

Parents often choose to have their children homeschooled so they are not exposed to the negative environment many kids are exposed to every day in public schools. John Larabell author of “Homeschooling” states, “The sex, drugs, and violence prevalent in public schools are practically a non-issue for most homeschool families and homeschooled children often have a much closer relationship with their parents than their public-school counterparts” (Larabell). When a child is homeschooled parents don’t have to worry about school shootings, bullies, or if their child is being disrespectfully by a teacher. The Department of Justice Documents author of “United State Attorney’s Office and Royal Oak Public School Welcome the Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan to Hold a Forum on Ani-Bullying” states, “Bullying creates a climate of fear in school, playgrounds, and neighborhoods. Victims of bullying suffer from a wide range of psychological and school-related problems including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and even suicide” (The Department of Justice). Many parents are also concerned with their child’s emotions and mental stability which can be affected when in public schools by other students or situations they are exposed to. Depending on who you ask when a child is homeschooled, some feel the child is being raised sheltered but others will tell you the parents are just trying to protect their child from the scary world.

Pros And Cons Of The Homeschooling Educational System

Have you ever wondered why private tutoring is considered more and more often for educating today’s youth? I often hear mother’s/father’s telling me they feel compelled to homeschool their children, but my question is, what compels parents to consider private tutoring their young adolescents? Are public educational systems really that bad? Do children strive better in a homeschooling center, or is it just another fallacy?

Well, here are some pros and cons of the homeschooling educational system. Let’s start with the upsides of homeschooling young adolescents. Most parents prefer a homeschooling center, due to the fact that homeschooling tutors provide a more comfortable environment for a student/child to learn. A homeschooling center also provides special attention according to your child’s level of knowledge. I firmly believe that the progress of every adolescent in a classroom depends on the teacher, tutor, or professor your child has. I believe every child/adolescent needs a teacher/ professor that is passionate about wanting to teach the young individual and attend to their weak points. No child is incapable of expanding their knowledge. It all depends on the student’s environment and the teacher’s/professor’s personality.

Having your child homeschooled can also have a profound impact on their school and personal life. If you have a child that is very shy and withdrawn, homeschooling may alter that specific personality trait, depending on the educator’s personality. I myself was homeschooled and in my personal opinion, preferred the homeschooling center. My homeschooling center focused more on each student individually.

Homeschooling can alter an adolescent’s personality for the better as well as the worse. Negative changes within an adolescent’s personality may occur, such as laziness due to the educator being too lenient. Children may become undisciplined and bring home bad grades. Most of these negative changes may partially be the educator’s fault, but not all of the blame should be pinned on the educator. It also depends on the adolescent’s home environment. There are a huge number of homeschooling centers across the world, yet only a few truly excellent teachers, tutors, and professors exist. Homeschooling is not meant for every child. It all depends on the child’s personality. I strongly believe homeschooling centers need to start employing teachers/tutors that are truly passionate about all types of children. The homeschooling centers need teachers/tutors that will encourage the youth instead of breaking down their self-esteem.

I conclusion, homeschooling may have a few negative impacts on the youth of today, there are more positive changes than negative changes that might occur in a child’s personality and school life. It all depends on your child’s personality and determination to want to learn. it is all about finding the right teacher/ tutor to teach your young adolescent. Keep in mind that children/teenagers and students do better when they feel like they can connect with their educator on a personal level. If your child/teenager connects with a teacher/tutor or professor on a personal level, they will always want to strive to do better in their school life. So, please dear parents, before making any rash decisions concerning your child’s school life, I ask you to please consider each and every aspect of your decision.

The Benefits Of Public School Over Homeschooling

Education plays a vital and serious role in our cutting-edge society. Lots of parents are urged to begin tutoring their children at a very young age. Since, there is still a question which way of learning is progressively useful to them, homeschooling or public schools? Homeschooling and public schools are quite diverse types of education, both filled with advantages and disadvantages. Observing these two types, doubtless, public schools are more popular within our society. While both homeschooling and public schools allow you to acquire a great amount of information and knowledge, only public schools allow you to gain knowledge filled with healthy relationships, social and academic achievements.

Warm and healthy relationships between students are keys to be extrovert individuals. Numerous pupils need the exhortation that can help compose the qualities from instructors. Homeschooling provides a working atmosphere without any external and internal destructions. A young pupil needs consideration and requires genuine correspondence among teachers and classmates. These kids experience considerable difficulties with reality from guidance, on what is required. This makes them upset and confused. However, public schools offer pupils the opportunity to create warm and healthy connections with others. Public schools are already privileged with their feature of creating face-to-face communication. Since friends are those with whom you can make great memorable occasions. They will be a fundamental presence towards one another. In this way, educators can guide from individual encounters. It helps and strengthens partnerships. Mainly, any type of distraction is a small amount of relationship; moreover, face-to-face communication sometimes being as a type of destruction is an obligatory one.

The social development of pupils grows during the years when they study at public schools, as they are constantly surrounded by numerous types of pupils with various perspectives, thoughts, and beliefs. However, homeschooled pupils are not ready for these types of social diversity, therefore, when they became part of these public training, they may be shocked and feel ignored. This feeling of ignorance can be a result of homeschooling since during this period they get extra attention from their parents. Moreover, this is one of the favorable points of public schools, since they are substantially more ahead. Taking these facts into account, homeschooling may help pupils to grow academically, however, it does not allow kids to grow and develop socially. These may cause them to have some social problems even during their adulthood. These pupils will not have the option to be as socially worthy as somebody who has confronted issues and weights of our society. Mainly, homeschooling does not enable young adults to be as ready as others for the interruptions and worries of our society. Homeschooling does not support kids to get ready and have prosperous lives. By considering all these points, one should choose both for gaining education, but only public schools may support one’s social growth.

Hard work and concentration are obligatory parts of learning and having achievements. Lots of time goes for learning at home, however, there is still a question of whether the achievement is guaranteed or not. Regarding each subject, parents should plan a lesson outline. Moreover, if a child has difficulties acquiring that lesson, it may cause an argument between the parent and the kid. For most, when choosing a public school, the majority of parents feel satisfied since their kids are getting the correct nature of knowledge. Parents constantly prefer to know whether they are getting their cash worth. Besides, public schools provide a basic and structural atmosphere, so students may be very responsible for the rules and their deadlines. Listening to your classmates’ questions and your teacher’s answers can make you understand each point and each mistake. At school, pupils are obliged to listen to authorities, besides their parents. Here, they should follow and undergo their teachers’ rules and guidelines and work under strain. Because of the absence of pressure and some deadlines at home, homeschooled pupils have less practice in dealing with problems. Furthermore, because of the lack of interaction with their schoolmates, homeschooled students have less practice with teamwork, which doubtless disables them in their future careers. Parents sometimes make their children study at home without being professional teachers and mentors which can cause low academic progress.

During our school years, we strive to have high academic results and healthy, friendly connections with everyone, while public schools are somehow guaranteed these qualities, however, homeschooling does not. Education and knowledge have consistently been significant factors for many individuals in the present world. For some having the option to have advanced education, it is a must. There are two types of general education, both with good and bad sides. To conclude, people have different views one may consider these pluses and minuses of these two types of education. In conclusion, if the parents want their kid to be socially, mentally, and academically developed they may choose public schools.

Home Schooling And The Question Of Socialization

Homeschooling has been around for 25 years. It is has been exceptionally gaining popularity in the past few years as more students are choosing to become homeschooled. It is indeed extraordinary to be able to learn what is being taught in a classroom without having to step a foot inside. Homeschooling can be considered a type of self-study program that is done independently at the pace that suits the student; also, the student has the complete authority to choose the subjects they are interested in and pursue them. This idea of students getting an education from home rather than physically attending a school has been controversial for so long. Is homeschooling, in effect, truly better than regular schooling?

No matter how powerful a system is, it will always have some drawbacks that can negatively influence it. Regular schooling, as well as homeschooling both, have their benefits and disadvantages. In the case of home-schooling, students have a flexible schedule, this enables them to also focus on other things like practicing a sport or developing a talent. Regular schools, however, have a strict schedule, and most of the time, students do not have enough time to truly devote themselves to a certain hobby. Public schooling is offered for free in some countries and is supported by the government in many other countries, furthermore, the education they get is not cheap but rather is really strong which is a big plus point. Most schools provide their students with a variety of extracurricular activities and after school clubs and sports practices. This feature allows students to mingle more together and share things outside of the classroom, something that is not provided by homeschooling. On the other hand, the large classes at schools have a negative impact on the attention span of the students; they also get less assistance due to the ratio of students to teachers in a classroom. At home, students are more focused on and accommodated easier and more efficiently. Not all students are equal, so the system can be unfair to others and does not match the levels of all the students.

Many reasons can be the driving force behind students preferring to be taught at home rather than in a classroom. Do their choices have some long-term consequences? Parents are the ones who have the biggest authority in choosing the method, the system, and the location of their kid’s education. They have the final say in setting the whole future of their child. Religion is proclaimed to be one of the main reasons behind that decision. Some parents prefer to teach their children about their religions and beliefs by themselves to avoid any misleading information they may get from their classmates or teachers at school. They believe homeschooling them will preserve their nature and reduce all the negative influences they may encounter outside. They believe that socialization actually is rather destructive and harmful since it may teach them about things they should not know about at their age. On the other hand, homeschooling is pretty tough; one of the parents must be completely devoted to educating their child, most likely giving up on his/her job. This decreases the total income of the family since the second income from that one parent is no longer available. Moreover, the process of homeschooling requires a lot of effort and planning. One-to-one studying is hugely beneficial for both the student and the mentor. It allows the mentor to know more about the student’s academic level and base the programs according to that. Unlike regular schools, where programs are universal disregarding the different academic levels of the students in the same class. Bullying is of the most dangerous experiences any person can go through, it has an enormously huge impact on a person’s mental and emotional state. It is also the main reason why parents are afraid of sending their precious child into an environment that might turn out to be hurtless hell for them. Many people assume that homeschooled kids become less successful than regular-schooled kids in terms of getting into college, finding a job, and being effective members of society. In fact, “researches suggests homeschooled children tend to do better on standardized tests, stick around longer in college, and do better once they’re enrolled. A 2009 study showed that the proportion of homeschoolers who graduated from college was about 67%, while among public school students it was 59%. Students from Catholic and private schools fell even lower in college graduation rates, with 54% and 51% of kids, respectively, completing all four years.” (Weller, C, 2018) Although they are more successful in terms of academics, they are more socially isolated compared to other kids their age. They do not get exposed to many different unusual situations or step out of their comfort zone. Schools are also confined in a way that disables students to fully engage in their community, home school students have more freedom in this area. “These days, colleges are making the process of admissions for homeschoolers simple and fair. In fact, many colleges are now seeking out homeschoolers themselves, as homeschooled students tend to be excellent college students.” (The Homeschooler’s Guide,2013) This shows that both kinds of students have equal college/university acceptance opportunities.

There are various educational methods that have an impact on how students learn and perceive information. This all ties back to how teaching was applied during the past years. Some teaching methods that I found quite interesting in the homeschooling system were computerized curriculum and video curriculum. As well as the traditional books, textbooks, and self-study books with independent seatwork and tests administered by parents. The various new educational that cope with the modern technological advances, I believe, strike more with the students and enables them to comprehend the information more easily. Using many techniques to teach students is a very powerful method to get them engaged rather than sticking to the same old systems and methods. Due to this, over the past 20 years, homeschooling has been gradually replacing public school education. Renovation is key in any learning process and is an important tool in developing cognitive abilities in children this aspect is a striking plus point for home school students.

Homeschooling is often judged and presumed to be less beneficial and weaker than regular schools; and that homeschooled students lack social skills since they don’t interact with other students. All those claims are often not true. I believe that each system is unique, and they both have a very powerful base and many followers. As I mentioned before, a system will always have flaws no matter how perfect it may seem. Understanding the drawbacks and benefits of each educates us about the strengths and the weaknesses and enables us to make a wise decision when choosing. Assuming things without confirming them leads to many misunderstandings and unspoken pre-judgmental opinions.

Advantages of Homeschooling in America

After reading chapter 13:Education of the Unite States. According to it,I determined to write about American homeschooling, not included by this chapter. Lucy is a Chinese girl who lived in a quiet town in North Carolina for a while. Next door to hers are Mr. And Mrs. Lane, who are very hospitable and invite her to visit. They have two children, a boy named Jason, 7, who is bright and bright, and a girl named Emily, 4, who is as cute and lively as a doll. She enjoys playing with them. Mr. And Mrs. Lane trusted her, and sometimes they let her babysit when they couldn’t take care of the children. The job was the spice of her life.

But there was one thing that puzzled her: 7-year-old Jason stayed at home all the time and didn’t go to school every day like other kids his age. At one point, she asked Carol, the mother of the child, ‘why don’t you send Jason to school?’ She smiled and said, ‘I teach him to read at home. Have you heard of home school?’ ‘Look, here’s Jason’s schedule from Monday to Friday.’She see the Monday column below: get up at 7 a.m., brush your teeth and gargle. After breakfast, do some housework, such as feeding the pet cat. Class starts at 8:00 and Carol teaches him English, math and biology. In the afternoon, take him and Emily to the library to borrow children’s books or videos, and the rest of the time he can play with his sister or do what he likes. In the same way, from Tuesday to Friday, Jason has two or three classes in the morning and Carol arranges different activities for him in the afternoon. For example, swimming, scouting, community activities, etc. On weekends, family visits to grandparents, friends or picnics in the countryside; Socializing with other homeschooling parents and children; Sometimes he also participates in church activities.

There are many homeschooled children like Jason in the United States. This so-called ‘home schooling’ is an alternative to the traditional educational system. It usually refers to primary and secondary school students receiving the equivalent of a normal school education at home (rather than at school) under the guidance of a parent or guardian. The study plan is tailored by parents according to the different characteristics of their children. Children learn not only from textbooks, community libraries, and museums but also from life itself. For example, some parents take their children to participate in some charity activities, such as visiting the elderly and the sick in nursing homes or hospitals, with the purpose of consciously cultivating their children’s moral character of caring for others and cherishing life. This is what is special about homeschooling, where parents are ready to impart important values, morals, and rules of daily living.

The history of American home schooling can be traced back to the colonial settlement and westward expansion of the 17th and early 19th centuries. At that time, most parents taught their children knowledge and skills at home, and later transferred their children to their community schools. It was not until the 1870s, when the state and the states passed laws providing free education to the general public, that responsibility was transferred to institutionalized schools. Home schooling is in decline because of the popularity of public schools. It was not until the 1960s and 1970s that homeschooling again attracted the attention of parents and educators. Two of these educators, Moore and Holt, developed theories that propelled the home-school movement.

The development of homeschooling has gone through several different stages of dispute, confrontation, cooperation and consolidation. It was criticized in its early days. While it was in dispute, Moore and holt planted the seeds of this educational idea in people’s minds. They wrote books and articles to promote their educational ideas. They believe that education should not exist in a forced, high-pressure, competitive school environment, but should be people-oriented, in a family environment that follows the natural laws of human development. At that time, parents were dissatisfied with the educational activities in public schools, so they took their children out of public schools and home-schooled them. Parents and schools are locked in a battle over their children’s right to education that has led to legal action. The mass media is also against homeschools, many of which have had to go underground. In the late 1980s, the courts ruled in favor of the parents. Schools realized that they had to serve their students in every way, so they began to work with home schools to provide them with materials, facilities, and so on. Since then, the number of homeschooled children has grown steadily. Homeschooling grew rapidly in the 1990s.

Homeschooling is now legal in all 50 states, and some have fairly liberal laws that do not require parents to seek state approval to start tutoring. It has become an influential form of education. The number of ‘home-schooled’ students is growing by 15-40% a year, according to estimates by the institute of homeschooling. Figures show that the number of home-schooled children rose from 500,000 to 750,000 between 1990 and 1995. In 2001-2002, two million children in grades kindergarten through 12 (the equivalent of our country’s third grade) were home-schooled. From the above data, we can easily see the charm of this form of education. The parents’ choice certainly reflects widespread dissatisfaction with schools in the United States. One mother said: ‘public schools have a shortage of teachers and the quality of teaching has gone downhill. And middle-class families like us couldn’t afford the expensive private schools, so I decided to teach my kids myself.’ Another parent said: ‘I decided to teach my children at home mainly because violence and drug abuse in public schools pose a great threat to children’s safety and physical and mental health.’ Parents are clearly desperate to find the best way to educate their children, and they are responding to the government’s repeated attempts to bring their children’s education back into their own hands.

Advantages

Homeschooling not only provides children with a safe learning environment free from violence, drugs and other negative influences, but also has many advantages that no other educational model can match:

1. Parents can impart values, beliefs and ethics to their children.

Parents who choose to teach their children at home believe that the right values, beliefs and ethics are essential to their children’s overall development. Therefore, it is incumbent upon parents to pass on to the next generation what they consider important values. For example, some parents start by guiding their children to take good care of the animals and plants around them, so as to cultivate their awareness of protecting the environment and cherishing life.

2. Home-school teaching can meet the needs of different children.

Parents can not only tailor their children’s teaching plans according to their children’s intelligence, but also follow appropriate learning methods to guide them. For example, for children with slow mathematical thinking, parents can slow down the process of learning. If he has great potential in reading, he may choose a more difficult reading material and be encouraged to read widely. Such teaching methods can especially meet the special needs of exceptional or disabled children. Because the teaching model of regular schools is totally unsuitable for the learning and growth of this special group.

3. Homeschooling creates close family relationships between parents and children.

Close and stable family relationship is the guarantee of healthy growth of children. This model allows parents to fully enjoy the time they spend with their children and creates opportunities for family members to get to know each other better and build rapport. Homeschooling offers parents the opportunity to focus on their children’s development. When they find children in the development of character or learning problems, can be timely guidance, inspiration, help the child to set up to overcome the difficulties of the letter Heart.

4. Homeschooling provides more personalized and social practice opportunities for children.

Public school students spend most of their free time watching TV and videos. Home-schoolers, on the other hand, tend to develop their own interests in their spare time. Parents arrange for their children to participate in community activities such as scouts, volunteer services, etc. In addition, the children also go on field trips and socialize with other home-school student groups. The success of homeschooling is obvious. Surveys show that homeschooled students outperform their formal counterparts in academic performance, social skills and moral development. At present, some famous universities such as Harvard,Yale is open to homeschooling. In the fall of 1999, Stanford admitted 27 percent of its home-school applicants, twice as many as it admitted public and private students.

However, although home school has many advantages, it also has some limitations according to the family characteristics of choosing this education model. Most families involved in such education are middle – or upper-income. In this category, 72% of fathers and 59% of mothers had college or graduate degrees. Another survey of 1,657 families found that 17.3% of parents were accountants or engineers. 16.9% were professors, lawyers or doctors; 10.7 percent are small business owners, among them 87.8 percent of mothers are willing to stay at home to educate their children as a career. One conclusion can be drawn from these data: families that choose to raise their children at home should first have a stable economic foundation; Secondly, parents should have a higher level of education.

Home school is an open and individualized special education model cultivated under the background of American culture. At present, it can not be applied to our country’s education system and environment. But there is something to ponder in this model. There is a common problem in our country — the tension between parents and children. The reason is that parents want their children to become the best in the world, and they want their children to be among the best in the world. As a result of the excessive pressure, the child to the parents have adverse feelings. In addition, parents do not know how to communicate, resulting in increased tension between the two sides, sometimes even conflict. The American homeschooling approach offers a way. Our parents should spend more time with their children, deepen their relationship with them, and establish a friendly relationship of mutual respect and understanding. This kind of relationship helps develop a child’s self-confidence. Only when children are full of self-confidence, they can meet challenges on the road to success in life.

Arguments for Home Schooling: Persuasive Essay

Introduction –

Education systems around the world are commonly viewed as a vital factor that plays in shaping the futures of today’s generation. So why does a vast amount of families choose to undertake the route of homeschooling? This idea to conduct teaching in one’s home environment has evolved internationally over a course of time to later become part of today’s modern world, analysation gathered shows UK’s homeschooling system has increased by 40% over three years and since 1999 the figures of home-schooled children in the USA have doubled. But are those who participate in home-schooling particularly benefiting from it? Tradition education provides many advantageous elements that support a child’s development in learning, individuals can master skills efficiently through an interactive classroom and the facility of having face-to-face teaching with a qualified instructor. Conversely, homeschooling does not offer the same standards of teaching, the following arguments that will be raised surrounding thus topic can often be considered to affect a child’s capability to reach their full potential.

Arguments 1 –

Socialisation. The process of a student transitioning to school involves many opportunities to enhance skills within the communication and socialisation eras, these experiences play a critical role in today’s society and will help one’s preparation for the “real world”. Traditionally educated children encounter numerous situations that display how to appropriately behave when interacting with peers or teachers. This success can be reflected through an individual’s quality of life, primarily showing the importance socialization offers to young people. You may be wondering, are those who are home-schooled exposed to the same standards of socialization? A major talking point that tarnishes the reputation of homeschooling can be related to the concerns expressed by critics, their fears of behavioural skills developing at hindered rates can now be distinguished as a common occurrence found in children with such circumstances. Findings can reveal that due to tuition being confined at home many fellow home schoolers have experienced feelings of abandonment, isolation or “a disconnection from society”. Undeniably emotions like so are not appropriate for any child to experience, however this devastating truth does not stop here. Children in home education tend to become overwhelmed when the importance of having friends and to adequately socialize become a realization, those who feel like this have been known to blame parents. Needless to say, the highlighted issue surrounding home-schooled students present and future development is required to be tackled! Some would encourage the introduction of curriculums that are tailored to focus on emotional & social growth of a student.

Argument 2-

In some cases of home-schooling, the downfall of a child reaching their full potential can be partially related to the parent(s) carrying out the tuition. This can vary from different factors, however the most brutal reason that will take its toll on students’ fulfilment in education, can be home instructors lacking the necessary qualifications to teach effectively. This regulation needs to be met immediately if we want children involved in the home-schooling system to have their requirements fulfilled! According to responsible home education individuals willing to tutor children at home “should have at least a high school diploma or GED”. Yet often parents do not obey by this set standard. Those teaching are responsible in providing suitable education equipped for the child this can be accomplished by adapted lessons that suit and test your student’s ability, though homeschooling parent are not professional teachers! Anyone can perform home-schooling, but who is to guarantee the student is receiving the necessary education? Individuals who are certified in the teaching occupation have obtained various teaching methods that include a diverse approach, this is an area others simply cannot compete with. Points regarding this issue have even been raised through those deeply involved in the media! Neil Carmichael former MP and member of Conservative party said it is “very difficult” for teachers to help educate students who have been poorly home educated to catch up as they miss “huge chunks of time”. This saddened truth can determine the potential careers offered to those whom are/were attendants of home-school, parents truly need to understand what is best for their child for this matter to be avoided!

Argument 3 –

In present day, when enrolling your child into public or private school you are essentially setting them up to learn a variety of skills that will assist them beneficially in the foreseeable future. Places of education have evolved remarkably over the generations. A place which was once considered to be a compilation of textbook work, can nowadays be described as the prime source of learning. This title can reflect on the countless resources/materials now available to students, the widened array of learning techniques suited to those who prefer social or solitary styles and the integration of technology in classrooms. This is just a small percentage of the many reasons why traditional education is the best source of learning. However, are these listed features applied in home-schooling systems? The truth is children who are educated at home often lack general resources that would be available to the average pupil, cases like so are really due to the costly amount that teaching materials total to. Home-schooling costs can range from a couple hundred pounds to easily £1000+ per year, considering many countries offer free tuition these figures can be seen as a significant amount. From this expense, parents are required to purchase essential supplies, books, excursions and materials equipped for learning purposes, these are no newcomers for adding to the financial cost. In surveys, parents expressed they were willing “to have their children enrol in public school on a part-time basis to take specialized courses” that were beyond available for home teaching – (education. findlaw). When referring back to home-schooling not allowing a child to reach their full potential this is definite reasoning that may prove so. Ultimately, these unfair circumstances need to be inquired by the government or local authorities if we want home-schoolers to receive an equal chance in the learning provided, this could be moderately done through fundings.

Counter Argument –

In contrast to this topic, many claim to differ w home-schooling is a beneficial method of educating children. From the disadvantages, I have thoroughly discussed some may argue attendants of home education perform better, indications for this can be students having fewer distractions, therefore, allowing them to focus more on learning. As students are provided with a more personal approach to schooling, e.g.curriculums, subjects and preferences of learning, their performance and work ethic has been known to reach positive standards.

Another point of topic worth mentioning is socialization, due to the contrast in interaction that traditional education offers compared at-home learning, this factor does not hold the best reputation. However, Despite this, many of those homes schoolers are prompted or giving many opportunities to join activities, support groups and programs that revolve around socializing with peers. Time predominately spent with adults can increase rates of maturity and other skills that set a child up for the future. While this may be true, it does not give confirmation of the bigger picture on whether homeschooling allows a child to succeed in reaching their full potential.

Conclusions-

As Homeschooling becomes more popular each day and further develops into today’s society, it’s existence can often be viewed in a negative manner based on many reasons. In regards to the widely face issue of homeschooled children not being able to achieve at there full potential, it is simply unacceptable. This is a concern that has alarmed many for a reasonable time span and undoubtedly needs to be addressed! No matter who or why is a participant in either homeschooling or traditional education every child deserves to have succession in the schooling taught. For this aspect of learning to change into a positive circumstance, it is essential to have the department for education acknowledge this error of equality received in the different styles of teaching. It is no surprise that Our generation is in desperate need for this education crisis to be resolved! The longer we do not act upon on this, the more damage that will be done to children’s futures.

Essence and Definitions of Homeschooling

Homeschooling is an idea, facilitated by parents or home-tutors with no strict guidelines like various academic institutions. This is homeschooling that is prevalent in western societies where they want to ensure children’s education rights with no finite rules and regulations. Though this teaching is not widely common in our country, parents subconsciously indulge in this. The approach of homeschooling start from the very early stage, unknowingly, when students do not yet go to school; rather, they learn things from their parents or home tutors. In our country, normally, we do not have any idea about the teaching methods or approaches or techniques that we implement at the time of tutoring. Specifically, home tutors or family members have no inkling whatsoever or, at the most, have little notion about such methods that will help get children’s minds firmly developed for the future, leading to opportunities in broader platforms.

Students learn things from their surroundings where family plays an important role. For self-monitoring in further life, parents work as scaffolders or interlocutors. As a third world country where people are striving for living a good life, social and economic disparity is a common issue in Bangladesh. These sources of despair affect heavily on education and its system. People from all classes – upper, middle, especially lower – are facing complications for getting their educational rights. It is a matter of great sorrow that still there is a lack of getting education in an appropriate manner in most of the rural areas in our country, which is unimaginable in this 21st century. Alamgir (2017) in his article says that according to academics and board officials, “the widening gap between urban and rural Bangladesh in education standard as most of the institutions with 0-50 percent pass rate were from rural areas” (“Rural-urban gap in education widens”).

In urban societies, we are aware of education and try to accelerate on it as Khandker and Samad (1995) say that “it is worth noting that the Government of Bangladesh, with the help from the World Bank and other development agencies, has recently undertaken certain education reforms and investment decisions to improve educational outcomes” (p. 27). However, we have very little knowledge on teaching approach, as it is suggested in the article named “English language teaching in Bangladesh today: Issues, outcomes and implications” where Rahman et al. (2019) argues that assessment methods do not have much validity because of the gap between what is meant to be taught and what actually is assessed (p. 9).

Nowadays, parents are aware of teaching their children in a more effective way at home as the learning emerges from the home, creating a great impact on children’s further life. Thus, they try to make a setting in their home or in a place where learning will not be bland and monotonous.

Homeschooling is a broad category as it includes lots of sections of teaching. In this modern day parents are more inclined to teach their children various activities where there will not be any specific type of boundaries; rather studying will be holistic which will ensure children’s educational rights. Whitaker (2005) states this about homeschooling in America:

“Homeschooling is a type of schooling in which a person is educated outside the school setting, usually at home. Students who are homeschooled are generally taught by one or both of their parents. The act of homeschooling is not a novel concept to our society. Before the public school system became available, education in the home was typical. The recent homeschooling movement began during the 1960s and 1970s when many Americans were questioning the quality of the public education system.” (p. 1)

It may be extra education from family members and tutors at home while the child is going to school as well, and it may also entail a total replacement of school.

Though there are several terms of homeschooling, I will focus more on early homeschooling in the context of Bangladesh. This paper will observe the methodologies of the teaching of English language that have been used by the parents or home tutors both consciously and unconsciously, and will compare with the ELT theories, methods and approaches. Not only that, but also the expected outcome of parents towards their children and their involvement of taking decisions, collaboration, volunteering will be focused.

Benefits of Homeschooling: Opinion Essay

Education is an application of the schooling process to obtain knowledge, skills, values, morals and beliefs. So, technically how you learn depends on the process that is schooling. Some parents have concerns related to academics and social environment, also every child is not the same therefore, opting out of homeschooling is a good option for them. It gives children a personal space that helps them in building self-confidence which they need in every aspects of the life. Luffman (1998) stated that homeschooling occurs when a child participates in his or her education at home rather than attending a public, private or other type of school. Basically, Homeschooling is a bless to education as it offers high academic success, better environment to gain knowledge and helps child to grow physically as well as mentally at their own pace. Academic Success is highly important because it is strongly linked to the positive outcomes we value. It is a very common opinion that homeschoolers are less prepared and they do not perform well in academics. But this baseless opinion is completely wrong because the facts and statistics tells us a different story. According to a study conducted by National Home of Education Research Institute (2016), it is found that homeschoolers scored 15 to 30 points higher on standardized academic tests. This clearly means that homeschooled students have a good track of performing well in academic tests and not only in studies, a study by National Federation of State High School Association (2013) revealed that 29% of homeschooled students of high school age participate in sports and are more likely to develop discipline, patience, ethics, good habits and many others things which one must have to achieve success in life. Moreover, a homeschooled child gets more attention individually, being a parent as well as teacher you can have a simple conversation that focuses on goals and guide your child to the right path. Consequently, homeschoolers are found to be more physically and mentally strong and can give a more efficient and practical solutions to certain kind of problems. Environment plays a significant role in your learning process. Peace, Focus, Goals and time management are some necessities of a better environment. Homeschooling provides you a better atmosphere to learn through flexible time tables and socialization. You can select a time table that fits you best and you can organize your daily routines accordingly. It also comes with a lot of week activities which helps you in socialization. According to Brian Ray (1997), homeschooled children are more involved in week activities like field trips, Sunday classes, bible clubs, group tasks etcetera. Doing such activities helps children to learn how to prioritize things, what are their strengths and weaknesses, how to deal with problems, how to win with grace, how to accept failures and many more. It helps students to build maturity and how to make decisions professionally. According to Romanowski (2001), homeschooled students are comparably scored above the median in the tested areas of math, science and verbal skills. This means that homeschoolers gets a more peaceful and focused environment to acquire knowledge Moreover, effective learning gives the child freedom to think more independently which helps them in knowing and exploring the world more deeply. Homeschooled students are good in expressing what they feel because they know how to think about themselves and aren’t easily influenced by peer pressure.

Every child is not the same in terms of their thinking skills, management skills, reaction to a problem, confidence level, speaking skills etcetera. So, each and every child should be treated the way they need to be treated. Homeschooling provides you with one to one tutoring and emotional intelligence which are beneficial and helpful in one’s overall development. It is, in effect, one to one tutoring which helps students to learn individually at their own pace and promotes fair and genuine learning environment. It ensures that student masters the basic skills before moving to the advanced-one. According to bohons (2012), “Homeschooling empowers students to understand, enjoy and preserve freedom and moral responsibilities embodied in America’s principles”. Furthermore, there is a famous quote by Aristotle, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all”. Learning from parents strengthens the parent-child bond. It gives them opportunity to parents to take responsibility of their children education and set curriculum guidelines for them. They spend more time with their kids which creates a very friendly and happy environment among the family. Also, children feel free to share their problems with them. Families are able to travel together and parents share their life experiences in order to guide their children right path. Moreover, it makes you emotionally very strong which is needed to be professionally successful in life. In conclusion, seeing the benefits of homeschooling, it is better place to learn and acquire knowledge. It is not only about learning or gaining knowledge, but also about the social interaction, flexibility of time and environment one’s child gets for learning. Homeschoolers are much more confident and can ask anything they want or feel without getting bullied from others. Joining homeschool is also better for children’s characteristics as they spend more time with their parents and people that their parents approve of. All this gives children a healthy atmosphere to grow. It all depends on the parents thinking, what according to them is best suited for their children’s.
