Touchstones are projects that illustrate your comprehension of the course material, help you refine skills, and demonstrate application of knowledge. You can work on a Touchstone anytime, but you must complete this unit’s assessments before you submit it. Once you’ve submitted a Touchstone, it will be graded and counted toward your final course score.
Touchstone 4: Analyzing Primary Sources
ASSIGNMENT: You have learned that the historian’s craft involves using evidence from the past to learn and write about what happened. This evidence comes in the form of primary sources, or first-hand accounts or artifacts from the time period that the historian is writing about or studying. These sources provide the foundation for any historical narrative. Throughout this course, we have introduced you to the skill of Analyzing Primary Sources and to numerous primary sources that professional historians have used to develop a narrative of U.S. history. Now, you will have the opportunity to practice the historian’s craft by reading and analyzing two primary sources yourself.
Keep in mind that the same skills you use to read and analyze historical sources can also be applied to current sources of information, such as newspaper articles, social media posts, television reports, and commercial advertisements. By practicing these skills now, you will not only develop your ability to perform historical research and think like a historian, you will also become a more skilled consumer of information in general.
To complete this assignment, download the submission template below. You will return the completed template as your Touchstone submission.

A. Directions
Step 1: Choose Two Primary Sources
Review the U.S. History I Touchstone Primary Sources List and select two primary sources from the list for your assignment. The primary sources you choose should come from different time periods. Submissions that analyze primary sources that are not on the provided list will be returned ungraded.
Step 2: Read and Analyze Each Source
Read and analyze each source by following the instructions outlined below. Record your responses in the Touchstone 4: Analyzing Primary Sources Template.
Part 1: Meet the Primary Source
What type of primary source is this?
Types could include a letter, speech, court transcript, legislation, diary entry, photograph, artifact, map, broadside, circular, political cartoon, artwork, etc.
Provide a brief description of something you notice about the source, as if you were explaining to someone who can’t see it.
For example, you might describe its physical appearance, its formal title (if it has one), its type of language, its size or length, or anything else in particular that stands out to you.
Part 2: Observe its Parts
Who wrote it or created it? Was it one person, or was it a group, like an organization?
When was it written or otherwise created?
What are two things you know about the personal background or beliefs of the person or group who created it?
Was the source meant to be public or private? If public, who do you think was the intended audience?
HINT
You may need to use the internet to help you research these questions.
Part 3: Interpret its Meaning: Historical Context
Describe two other things that were happening at the time the source was created.
Careful! In some cases, this could be different from the time the source describes or portrays.
How does that context (or background information) help you understand why it was created?
HINT
If needed, revisit the U.S. History I tutorials. The four time periods in the Primary Source List correspond to the four Units of the course. Navigate to the most relevant course unit and explore tutorials. Then find information to relate each primary source to its specific historical context.
Part 4: Interpret its Meaning: Main Point and Purpose
What is the main idea or point of the source? Use specific evidence from the source itself to support your answer.
Why do you think this primary source was made? Provide evidence from your prior responses to support your answer.
For example, was its purpose simply to inform? To persuade? To sensationalize? Or something else?
Part 5: Use it as Historical Evidence
What are two historical questions this source could help you to answer?
What are two pieces of information the source presents that you should “fact check” (verify as true) by checking other primary or secondary sources?
This primary source shows one perspective on this event or topic. What are two other perspectives you should get to better understand this event or topic, and why?
Refer to the checklist below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.
❒ Did you select two primary sources from the Touchstone 4: Primary Source List?
❒ Did you select sources from different time periods?
❒ Did you complete all sections of the template for both sources?
❒ Did you review the grading rubric and compare it to your responses?
❒ Did you review the sample to see an example of a completed assignment?
❒ Did you proofread your work for proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization?

in a 4-6 page essay, please complete the following steps:
First, select three episodes in A Journal of the Plague Year that you believe best represent both how Defoe wished to communicate this history and what he wanted his readers to understand about the Great Plague of London in 1665. You should select passages that most concisely and effectively represent both Defoe’s main message AND the unconventional methods that he employed when narrating it. For each one, write a thick paragraph or so that explains each episode and its importance, and then follow that up with your argument for why these three episodes, and not others, best represent what Defoe was trying to achieve with the Journal. Great essays will show that you have developed a sophisticated and independent comprehension of the text. You won’t want to select passages that I’ve discussed at length in podcast videos, for example.
Then, be like H. F. and choose three events or details (let’s also call them “episodes”) from the past year and a half that you believe best represent the reality of the COVID epidemic. You need to narrate these episodes in your essay, and then you need to make an argument for why these elements, and not others, best represent what COVID actually was to someone in the future who didn’t live through what we have. As in Defoe’s Journal, you should consider using a mix of personal anecdotes and official reports/events/statistics, but ultimately the choice is up to you. After you spend a thick paragraph explaining each of your “episodes” and their importance, make sure you offer your argument for why these three, taken together, best encapsulate the reality of COVID.
Finally, conclude your essay with a discussion of what you think the experience of taking this class and writing this essay has ultimately taught you. This is a purposely open-ended (and challenging!) prompt, so you can and should take this in any direction that feels right to you. I could imagine a number of themes that you might want to explore in this final concluding section, such as the relation of official and personal history, the relevance of the past to the present, the intersections of public and private trauma, the value of writing and storytelling, the value of facts and fictions, and so on. But these are only hunches based on what I have been thinking about these past weeks. What has this project taught you?

Assignment Instructions:
ACME, Inc. is growing like crazy! Now, we need to put into place a more secure and faster connection between our headquarters and our satellite offices. The two locations are approximately one mile apart and are in a heavily populated area.
With locations that are one mile apart, it is difficult to run Cat6 cable. Fiber will work but one mile of fiber will cost approximately $25,000. The other option is to procure a circuit from a vendor. The vendor will use their wire/channel and drop serial connections in your buildings. There will be a mostly charge. You will need to connect the serial connections to your internal routers. I am not expecting you to configure a VPN tunnel between the two remote sites, see diagram below.
Your assignment is to design the network configuration above. You will not be able to ping past your default gateways. Ping the local devices and capture the screens (at least two pings – one from the 192.168.10.x and one from 192.168.20.x ) and, capture the complete design, paste all three screenshots in a Word document and submit as assignment 6.
You can configure static routes to complete the configuration, but it is not required for this assignment.
Since this video is over 30 minutes, I have loaded it on YouTube. Follow the link below.

Please use the attached file from WEEK 5/Module : Primary Sources
A well-organized analytical response includes the following:
Introduction: One or two sentences that describe the historical context.
Thesis: One sentence that answers the prompt.
Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph describes one element of the complete answer. It includes direct evidence from the assigned reading materials and, if you directly quote a short phrase, informal citations of where you found that evidence.
Conclusion: One sentence restatement of the thesis. A description of why it is important to understand this analysis (how does it help us be better public citizens?)
We build analyses by starting with the evidence:
Look closely at the writing prompt, make sure you understand what you are being asked. Then take notes as you read, gathering evidence related to the writing prompt.
Evaluate the evidence you gathered and group your evidence into two or three separate points that you feel confident you can support.
For each group of evidence, create a topic sentence that describes how they help answer the writing prompt.
Create your body paragraphs: Start with one of your topic sentences, then list out the supporting evidence for each point.
Devise a complete thesis statement that combines your two or three separate points.
With your thesis in mind, write a one or two sentence introductory statement that puts your response into historical context.
Think about why understanding these historical points is important and craft that relevance into a brief conclusion.
Then organize what you just created into a standard essay format.
How to informally cite your evidence:
You can identify where you found information by adding in parens some basic information such as (Chap. 3 pg. 27) or (“Title of Primary Source,” paragraph 4). We are not using formal citations in our course, but we need enough details to find the information ourselves.
Interpreting primary sources within an historical context (If you are evaluating a primary source)
These primary source writing assignments are challenging. You are often being asked to read between the lines to find information conveyed by the source that may not be the author’s primary purpose. This is what Historians so. It is very helpful to have a good understanding of the era in which the source was written. You need to know what was happening at that time, what the author would have known, seen, understood, wanted, expected, etc. This is called the historical context. This is provided by the textbook chapters. Your written analysis needs to demonstrate an understanding of the primary source within the historical context.
Note: Writing assignments will be graded more strictly as the semester progresses. Be sure to focus on always improving both your knowledge and your ability to articulate yourself with evidence.
This assignment should be a minimum of 500 words. Feel free to write more if this is something you really want to dig into.
Specific Writing Assignment Description
Writing Prompt: From a close reading of Frederick Douglass’ “What to the Slave is the 4th of July?” what parts of the speech do you think surprised his audience?
Some considerations that might guide your approach to this assignment:
Carefully read Frederick Douglass’ speech
Review all the module materials carefully
Many folks in the audience were very proud of their independence
Many folks in the North did not have much direct experience with slavery
Submission Instructions
Your submission must be your own original work. Each response will be checked using multiple methods for originality. Be sure you are aware of how to correctly format the quote marks and spacing for any short quotations, “like this.” The TurnItIn similarity report should be 10% or less. If your similarity report is above 10%, your submission will not be graded. You will receive a zero. You will also receive a message from me with advice on how to proceed. You will not be able to resubmit the assignment, instead, you have the opportunity to turn in extra credit to make up for lost points.
First, the written response will be turned in as a writing assignment. Second, the exact same response will be pasted in as a discussion post in the discussion that follows this assignment. The discussion post will allow for other students to read and respond to your written response. Both submissions, the writing assignment post and the original discussion post are due on the same day. Responses to peers are due a few days later. Check all due dates. You will receive a score for your writing assignment in this posting. You will receive a score for your peer engagement in the discussion post that follows this assignment.
To submit your assignment, click on the “Start Assignment” button in the top right corner. But first, read the detailed instructions below:
You may only submit your assignment as a written response once. Do all necessary editing before submitting it.
At the top of each submission include:
Your name
Course
Assignment title
Date
Paste in the text of your written response. (Do not upload a document. Instead, copy and paste your text into the submission field.) You will only have one opportunity to turn it in, please give yourself enough time to carefully review and edit your responses.
If you have questions about this assignment, please ask in the Q&A: About this Class so that everyone can see the answer. Other students can also answer and might respond faster than I do.
You can do this!

Hello, folks. I need your help. Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with writers who have caused me to obtain Fs in my classes. The reason for this is that writers do not read the directions thoroughly. They simply put anything together. Whoever takes on this project must be willing to complete all of the course’s assignments going forth. Keep in mind that I give extra tips if I get an A or a high B on the project. and nice tips if i get a A+ Please keep in mind that my professor’s grade hard and expectations are exceedingly high. You must strictly adhere to the instructions provided. Please do not take this assignment if you are unable to handle it. I prefer someone with a history background. someone who is conversant with Turabian formatting. Please take a look at the instructions.
