As the Baroque period progressed, new patrons emerged. Velazquez was the court painter for King Philip when he painted the secular but mysterious Las Meninas. Peter Paul Ruben’s cycle of paintings for Marie de Medici was not of biblical scenes but of celebratory and dramatized scenes from her life. Middle-class Dutch patrons could purchase and even commission art for themselves, and their tastes often gravitated toward genre scenes.
How do patrons’ social or religious status influences the overall development of art stylistically and in terms of its subject?
Provide two examples from this week’s reading, each with a different patron to support your ideas.

Explain who the patron is and how their identity might have influenced the subject and style of the piece.

One industry that rapidly developed and expanded was the automobile industry. During the 1950s, Americans purchased 58 million cars. By 1960, 75 percent of American families owned one. The automobile created mobility on a scale not known before, and the automobile industry became a vital element in the economy. It became one of the world’s major manufacturing industries. The automobile dramatically impacted American society, whether you owned one or not.

Analyze how Picasso expresses both emotional and political content in Guernica

The work shown is Guernica by Pablo Picasso. In the book Theories of Modern Art: A Source Book by Artists and Critics, Picasso is quoted as making the following statement: “What do you think an artist is? An imbecile who has only eyes if he’s a painter…? On the contrary, he’s at the same time a political being, constantly alive to heartrending fiery, or happy events, to which he responds in every way…No, painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war for attack and defense against the enemy.” Making specific reference to both the question and the painting, analyze how Picasso expresses both emotional and political content in Guernica. in 300-500 words in length.
